HAWS’ 2017 has been an amazing year, and we cannot

thank our community enough!

Because of donor generosity, our new SNIP clinic and Behavior Department rooms were quickly opened – and are already surpassing goals. HAWS’ new cozy cat colony housing became a reality because of ingenuity and teamwork. Helping our neighbors took on a new meaning when HAWS welcomed adoptable pets from Alabama, Texas, Florida…and South Korea! More lives were saved through innovative programs such as Seeking Sanctuary and Annie’s Medical Fund, programs that rely on community involvement to be a success.

Waukesha County is ever closer to becoming a No-Kill Community. HAWS is so grateful for your continued support, philanthropy, action and kindness!

• Annie’s Medical Fund spent $20,000+ to save more than 250 lives.

• The Mod Squad had a 95% graduation/adoption rate this year!

• SNIP performed 4,297 spay-neuter surgeries; 588 for Project Guardian alone.

• Seeking Sanctuary placed 69 cats in barn homes in its first 6 months.

• Dog adoptions were again up – 919 total!

• Cat adoptions hit another record - 1,683 total!

• Education programs were attended by 9,026 people, of all ages.

• 538 dogs and their people attended Dog Training; 341 attended Puppy Parties.

• Volunteers logged close to 70,000 hours!

• 96% of stray/surren-dered dogs and 79% of stray/surrendered cats were rehomed.

• Overall, 83% of our resident animals went to new homes!

Your hobbies/interests outside of work? Travel, any dog-friendly activities, art, working on my home projects, yard work.

Why do you work at HAWS? Animals and animal people make me happy – working everyday to help animals and our community is a dream come true!

Staff Spotlight

As we leave the previous year behind – and work

to get all of our current pro-grams functioning to their fullest capacity – we have our eye on our future. Some key things stand out.

Education on humane values has never been needed more in our society. Empathy, compassion, nurturing, parenting skills, team work and positive communication are all things we can teach and reinforce with animals as our guides. Offering more youth op-portunities for hands-on animal interactions can reduce stress and improve self-esteem. We also hope to reach those youngsters who are lacking in empathy and compassion as early in life as

possible, through even more programs in and out of the shelter.

We will be helping our community’s animals by improving their safety net. We are exploring a pet food donation program, transportation for pets to their veterinarians, even bringing basic medical care to those that do not have pet-friendly transportation options. Working with our community partners we will engage in training to help people prepare for crises, both small and large.

These initiatives, along with our current educa-tion programs, dog training opportunities, SNIP/ veterinary clinic, animal rescue services and, of course, adoption services, will keep us busy! HAWS has a bright future ahead of us.

Staff Spotlight

HAWS’ Kids ‘N Critters Day Camp has become increasingly popular.

The past few years HAWS has been able to fill all of our camp slots, and each summer our sessions fill earlier than they did the year before.

HAWS is committed to educating the community since we see this as an important part of our mission. Educating the next generation to help them develop empathy and respect towards other living beings, learning what it means to be a re-sponsible pet owner, and learning about other animal welfare issues is what our camps strive to do. We try to do this in a way that ensures the campers also have fun and carry positive memories about HAWS after they’ve finished their camp session.

We attempt to keep our camp registration fees slightly below the market rate for camps in the Waukesha County area, be-cause we want it to be affordable enough for all families to be able to send their children. However, there are still families who cannot afford our camp fees.

experiencing financial difficulty, so that any child is able to come to HAWS and experience camp, interacting with and learning about animals.

This summer we provided camp at-tendance to 18 children who otherwise could not have afforded to attend!

We are thankful to our Kids ‘N Critters Day Camp sponsors who support HAWS’ mission of education and help make it possible to offer scholarships each year. This year we thank Davies Orthodontics, Menomonee Falls Fam-ily Pet Clinic and Waukesha State Bank. Individuals Nick Corgiat and Kerry Schnier also donated money specifically towards our scholarship fund.

With the opening of our expanded SNIP/medical

clinic in April 2017, we are happy to report that we are able to help many more animals in need!

In the past, our clinic completed an average of 52 “special surger-ies” a month for our resident adoptable animals. Now, we have increased the amount of these “special surgeries” to an aver-age of 70 a month.

These procedures are known as “special surgeries” because they are not run-of-the-mill spays or neuters. These are more intense surgeries that can include limb amputations, eye enucleation, ear hematomas and many more.

One recent case was a cat named Skittles. He came to HAWS as a stray, very much in pain and suffering from

a horrible eye infection. Our veterinar-ians were able to provide some much needed relief and removed his injured eye. In a follow-up after adoption, his new home reported that he is doing great and getting along just fine with one eye.

BUNNY BUDDIESI adopted Huey in 2015 from HAWS; just recently we added Honey (formerly Mama) to the family as well. Huey and Honey are now bonded and enjoying a happy bunny life with my boyfriend and me. They even have their own Instagram @hueyand-honey! — Morgan J.

Fawning over themAs part of HAWS’ ongoing partnership with Fellow Mortals Wildlife Hospital in Elkhorn, Field Ser-vices Manager Mark and Animal Rescue Team member An-dres spent time this summer transport-ing orphaned fawns from southeast Wis-consin to the hospi-tal. The partnership has ensured dozens of young deer have a chance at a full, “wild” life!

“Can” you help?In 2017, HAWS dealt with an unprecedented number of animals who had become caught in garbage items. PLEASE REMEMBER to tightly cover your garbage and recycling bins, and to crush aluminum/tin cans and plastic bottles/barrels so scavengers are unable to get stuck inside them. This little raccoon wan-dered the streets of Waukesha for several days before HAWS was able to help her – we hope all of these situations “can” turn out positively!

MR. MIMIMr. Mimi was very fearful when he came to HAWS from down south, so I decided to foster him. I quickly became his human, and we have been inseparable ever since! I am helping him learn to be more confi-dent around new people, and he has been making a lot of new friends. — Kirsten W.

AMBASSADOR ROSEI adopted Rose long ago – her original family had a child with a medical crisis and they gave her to a family friend. Unfortunately, they returned her as she didn’t fit into their lifestyle. Her owners even tried daycare but quickly ran out of funds. Rose is enjoying her life as an ambassador at HAWS for the past 7 years…and she still LOVES toddlers!! — Lynn O.

MELO – BEFORE & AFTER!When Melo (adopted as Monica) climbed onto my head in the viewing room and ‘booped’ my partner with her paw, I knew she had chosen us as her forever humans. Both a firecracker and a sweet pea, this cat has brought unimaginable joy to our lives. From her happy kneading to her bird “hunting” by the window, she always puts a smile on our faces. Thank you HAWS for bringing us all together!! — Michelle W. & Eric C.

Here at HAWS we love all animals, but “senior” ani-mals have a special place in our hearts. The Mobile Team has made a special effort to include senior dogs at our adoption events. They are as popular at events as puppies! Dogs like Taffy (12), Sammi (11),

Sara (13), Shadow (12), and Oogy and Thumper (10 and 14) all are

now in their forever homes, due in part to their Mobile appearances!

Often people are reluctant to adopt older dogs due to the short time they will be with them. But when they open their hearts and

homes to these wonderful dogs, owners are reward-ed with an unconditional love for the rest of that dog’s life. Senior dogs truly deserve – and appreciate – these loving homes.

When a family recently told me they were adopting Sara, I was so moved I shed a few tears of joy, and so did they! Maybe it is time for you to shed a tear of joy and open your home to a wonderful senior dog? You won’t regret it!

To reflect back on a full year, and pick my favorite stat for my depart-

ment, is a daunting task. We have had so many incredible opportunities this past year, and a number of record-breaking measurements that indicate continued growth of our programs.

• We received a $1,000 donation from Arrowhead High School, which allowed us to purchase new floor mats for our dog-training classes.

• We made just shy of $10,000 more in dog-training class registrations than last

fiscal year, without raising prices…and that was already $10,000 more from the year before that!

• We offered 48 more dog-training classes than we did last year (154 compared to 106).

But, probably the most meaningful statistic to me this last year is the

number of long-term Mod Squad dogs that were adopted. Eight dogs – Atticus, Andy, Betsy, Daisy, Floyd, Frank, Kali and Paco – found their new forever homes, after stays in our care lasting between three months and ten months!

With so many other dogs being adopted within days or weeks of their arrival at HAWS, these dogs were special to the Mod Squad as they handled their much lengthier stays at HAWS with grace. These dogs thrived where others would deteriorate, and we had so much commu-nity support in the form of Facebook posts, sponsored adoption fees and promotions on television and radio!

These dogs improved their manners in their time with our Mod Squad members, and their names were known in many households in our community. To see them all thrive and be adopted – this truly was the highlight of the year!
