Jämsä is a Finnish town, located in the

province of Central-Finland. It is located

just next to the country’s second largest

lake, Päijänne. The population is over 22

00 people. Jämsä surface area is 1823,91

km2. Of this area 252.59 km2 is water.

In Jämsä, the terrain is uneven und hilly.

The terrain sets it’s own challenges of

the endurance riders and routes certainly

is challenging for participants. If you get

result in Jämsa, you can be more than

proud of it !

In Finland, the Endurance riding sport has been practiced as early as in the 1930’s, but there was a break of almost 60 years until in 1987 the modernrule endurance riding competition called Pirkan ratsastus (Pirkka ride) took place. The route started from Teivo in Tampere and ended to Niinisalo. The competition was organized by Niinisalon ratsastajat (Niinisalo riders), and it was a two day competition. On the first day the route went from Teivo to Ikaalinen and on the second day, from Ikaalinen to Niinisalo. Among the riders, there was the grand old lady of theFinnish endurance riding, Ritva Lampinen, who also competes in Morva NBCH 2012!

In the 1990’s the sport began to grow, and gradually the ridingclubs that were focused on enduranceriding were founded. Few of these first ones were Riemuratsukot (Joyriders), founded 1985 and Nummelan ratsastajat (Nummela riders), founded 1990. Nummelan ratsastajat was ten years later the foundation of the new ridingclub, Suomen Matkaratsastusseura (Finnish Endurance ridingclub). In and between of those years, there was some good times and some bad times, but still the club was maintaining their activity at least in a small scale.

Still, endurance events are focused in southern and central Finland. In 1990, the NBCH competition was held in Lohja, in 2008 it was held in Jämi and now, 2012, it is held in Jämsä. Big events like this have always boosted the activity in national level, even thou these kind of events are a big financial burdon to bear for a small ridingclub.

In international events, the Finnish riders have visited the fair and sparingly, as the distances are long and the costs high. In the other Nordic and Baltic countries Finns are also competing to some extent. In Finland there are about 10 international level riders. Finland had a team in WEG Stockholm 1990 and in Haag 1994 and in the world Championship in Dubai 1998. In Stockholm Ritva Lampinen on her finish horse made the 160 km with good result. Johanna Strang-Ginouves participated in European Championships in France also with good results. Enthusiasts have a total of about 400. The sport is, however, strongly growing and taking on the role. The Finns have already reached the European Championship and World Championship level at random, and of course, the direction is up and forward! We have a promising young riders, such as Joona Mickelsson, who performed well in December 2011 in ABU DHABI - Club and regional competitions are held once a month and the number of participants is usually between 20 and 30. Little by little, the northern Finns are discovering the sport and also the competitions are organized in the coming years also up in the north.
