Christmas Angels from across Grey and Bruce made this Christmas one of the best ever for the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.

Over 2,800 donors gave almost $360,000 to the Foundation’s Christmas Angel Campaign for seven new automated medication cabinets needed throughout the Medicine, Surgery and Psychiatry Nursing Units at the Hospital.

“My sincere thanks to everyone who supported the campaign,” said Torben Hawksbridge, Foundation Chair. “Donations are critical to having the best possible care available here.”

Medications play a key role in the treatment and recovery of many patients. Every day the Hospital’s Pharmacy prepares over 1,000 medication orders. Ensuring each patient gets the right drug, at the right time, in the right dose, is a complex task involving doctors, pharmacy staff and nurses.

“The new automated cabinets store up to 300 different medications and are integrated into Grey Bruce Health Services’ electronic patient records and Pharmacy Information System,” said Dr. Brendan Mulroy, former Chief of Staff. The system alerts nurses to patient medication allergies and conflicts. State of the art thumbprint locks give nurses fast, secure access.

Since automated cabinets will be located in each nursing unit, nurses have virtually instant access to their patients’ medications. Shorter wait times improve patient comfort and care. Less paperwork means nurses enjoy more time interacting with and caring for their patients.

The equipment improves care for patients. Registered Nurses Cassy McMillan and Megan Lawes remarked, “When a patient needs a different medication, the new system enables us to respond much more quickly, especially at night, when staffing levels are lower.”

Introduced in the 1980s, dispensing technology has constantly been refined and improved to meet changing needs and health standards. GBHS feels the time is right to introduce this technology at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.

Every year your regional hospital needs new medical equipment. Some equipment needs replaced or

upgrade worn out or obsolete items. Other equipment is new, enabling the hospital to offer the latest in tests and procedures here, close to home.

Each year specialist physicians, department & nursing managers, administrators and others come together to identify the highest priority equipment needs. Then the Foundation is asked to raise funds to support the purchase of these items.

Curling Funspiel raises $19,775 for Diagnostic Equipment

16 teams of curlers took to the ice at Blue Water Curling Club on Saturday, February 18th for a day of curling to help raise funds for the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation. By the end of the day, $19,775 was raised to support the purchase of several pieces of diagnostic equipment for the Hospital.

“Thanks to all our curlers, sponsors, volunteers - everyone who helped make the day a huge success,” said Dennis Radbourne, Drawmaster and Chair of the organizing committee.

Lead sponsor of the Funspiel was Grey-Bruce Electric Supply. Draw

sponsors were Chatsworth Insurance, and Investors’ Group. More than 50 local businesses provided sponsorships, auction and raffle items, plus team prizes.

Winning the Funspiel overall was the SunLife team, skipped by Dylan Tippin, with Dave & Jack Middleton and Geoff Keleher. The top fundraising team was Team BDO, raising $1,400.

This was the 17th Annual Funspiel supporting the Hospital. Over its history, the event has raised about $300,000 to support the purchase of new and updated medical equipment for the Hospital.

The Board of Directors of the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation is pleased to introduce Amy McKinnon as Executive Director. Amy will officially join us on Monday June 26.

Amy comes to the Foundation from the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation where she has worked since 2007 as Director, Development Research

& Strategic Analysis and Privacy Officer. As a member of the Senior Leaders Team, Amy played a key role in the development of the Foundation’s strategic and operating plans. During her tenure with TG&WHF, Amy held the position of interim Director of Major Gifts.

Amy started her fundraising career with the Vancouver General & UBC Hospital Foundation before

returning to Ontario and joining the Royal Ontario Museum’s team during their $270 million capital campaign.

Amy grew up in Amberley and is excited to return to her roots and family and support the community she calls home. She recently relocated to Georgian Bluffs with her husband James.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of Paul Weitendorf, Executive Director of the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation. Paul’s last day was March 9.

Foundation in 1996. He became Executive Director of the Foundation in 2002. Under his leadership the Foundation completed major capital campaigns for MRI and cancer care.

During Paul’s time, the foundation provided more than $50 million for new and replacement medical

equipment for departments across the hospital.

Paul will be missed – he has been a valued and respected supervisor and colleague.

On Wednesday May 3rd, McDonald’s Restaurants in Meaford, Owen Sound and Port

Elgin raised $18,068 for three new neonatal incubators in the Intensive Care Nursery at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.

$1 from each Big Mac, Happy Meal and hot beverage were donated. “We are delighted to support the critical work of the Hospital, to help ensure babies get the best possible start in life,” said Steve Sgro, owner/operator of the McDonald’s Restaurants in Meaford, Owen Sound and Port Elgin. The Intensive Care Nursery is the only facility of its type in Grey and Bruce. 685 babies were born at the hospital in 2016 to parents from throughout the region, with 187 newborns requiring specialized care in the Nursery.

Incubators provide a controlled environment with warm, humidified air. They protect babies against light, noise, infection and other complications as their tiny bodies grow.

The new incubators replace aging equipment. State of the art technology means better care for babies with heat, light and sound carefully controlled. New incubators feature built in scales and high quality mattresses so babies are as comfortable as possible. Three new incubators cost about $25,000 each.

“We are so pleased to receive support from McHappy Day,” said Barb Severs, Foundation Board member and McHappy Day volunteer. “Our thanks to McDonald’s customers and all the staff and volunteers in Meaford, Owen Sound and Port Elgin.”

On March 28, the Foundation presented $455,000 from its Caring for Tomorrow Endowment Fund to

GBHS President & CEO, Lance Thurston. The Foundation established its

Endowment in 1996 to provide a secure, ongoing source of funding for new diagnostic and medical equipment. Hundreds of will bequests and other gifts have been added to the Fund, where they

are permanently invested. A portion of the income earned is what supports new equipment at the Hospital each year.

From a new histology processor and transfusion medicine fridge in the Laboratory, new endoscopes for general surgery, cardiac monitors, to a new YAG ophthamolic laser, the Endowment disbursement helped the Foundation fund equipment across nine departments at the Hospital in 2016. $9,950

of the total was designated for clinical staff education & training.

“This year’s disbursement brings the total provided to the Hospital to more than $4.1 million over the Endowment’s 21 year history,” said Foundation Chair, Torben Hawksbridge. “We’re looking forward to seeing what it will accomplish for the Hospital in the years to come.”

Recently, the Foundation received a $102,000 will bequest from

Christopher Parfree, formerly of Markdale. A regular donor to the Foundation over many years, Chris also remembered Markdale Hospital with a similar gift.

“Community was important to Chris,” said Estate Trustee, Don Harris. “He was

aware of the lack of government funding for medical equipment and considered his regional and local hospital to be at the heart of a strong community.”

Born in 1924 in Milford on the Sea, Lymington Haunts, UK, Chris is survived by his brother Derek, who still resides in their parents’ home. As a young man, Chris apprenticed as a Tool and Die

maker with MK Electric. As World War II heated up, he joined the Royal Air Force and was stationed in Cardington, Bedfordshire England, later serving in Egypt and Sudan.

While attending the Festival of Britain after the war, Chris heard about Canada - a country where he could practice his trade and live his passion for skiing. He

immigrated in 1951.“Bequest gifts have a direct impact

on patient services,” said Lance Thurston - President & CEO of Grey Bruce Health Services. “Those funds help us deliver better care: faster, more accurate diagnosis and less invasive surgery. So many are helped.”

Each year the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation works to raise funds to support the purchase of

new medical equipment and for staff development at the hospital. Many volunteers work on Foundation committees to support fundraising and administration.

CIBC Wood Gundy employee Grace Clark volunteers in the GBHS Cancer Centre. In recognition of her volunteer hours, CIBC Wood Gundy donated $500 in support of cancer care at the hospital. She presented a cheque to staff recently.

The 26th Annual Charity Golf Classic was held at Legacy Ridge Golf Club on June 2nd. $50,000 was raised for new IV infusion pumps needed in departments across the Hospital.
