Honoring the Past, Guarding the Present, Empowering the Future.

Q: What do you see for the vision of St. Vincent's? My vision for St. Vincent is to identify ways in which to partner to facilitate vocational training for youth. I also envision St. Vincent as an organization with an improved profile. The area in which it's located is currently being improved through civic development. This development should organically result in more patronage of area establishments and a diversifying of the area's consumer base.

Q: Please tell me about a life-changing moment you have witnessed at St. Vincent. In February, 2014, I presented one of the youth residents with a used keyboard because she had voiced her interest in continuing her pursuit of music. A creative outlet can be therapeutic, calming, and mentally stimulating; and I wanted to afford the young lady that opportunity.

The keyboard was collecting dust at my place. I thought nothing of the gesture – I just offering a gift for a young girl who I assumed would enjoy it. But her response changed my perception…especially for someone who's not accustomed to being treated in such way without the expectation of something in return. It was then that I realized the power of exceeding a young person's expectations and how that can encourage them to do the same for someone else.

“Many of our youth come to us angry, bitter, frowning…and leave laughing, smiling, and joking!”

“My vision for St. Vincent is to identify ways to partner with local institutions to facilitate vocational training for youth.”

LifeFOCUSIn 2014, we provided the LifeFOCUS Program to more than 300 youth. Acting as a safe haven for youth and families in crisis, we provided basic necessities like food, clothing, shelter, and personal hygiene items. Plus, we offered life-impacting counseling services mingled with recreational activities to help bring balance to the lives of kids who face lots of challenges. We also taught healthy alternatives for handling stress, increasing coping skills and coaching for anger management.

InHomeFOCUSThis year, we often had the opportunity to work with a child and his family in the home BEFORE the situation escalated and a temporary shelter was required. We met the child and family on their turf and began the work needed to amend a challenging situation. For kids from 8-21, InHomeFOCUS offered three to four months of significant in-home therapy designed to address not only the child’s personal challenges but also the difficulties that can arise from often dysfunc-tional family dynamics. Lives were changed through InHomeFOCUS!

Q: Why do you choose St. Vincent’s to volunteer? I think St. Vincent Home for Children is an outstanding organization with a powerful mission. St. Vincent provides the tools and services to help young people who are facing difficult circumstances excel regardless of the obstacles they face.

Q: What do you see for the vision of St. Vincent’s? Since 1850 St. Vincent Home for Children has been a safe haven in the community for children in need and I think that will continue to be our driving force. To stay relevant and meet the community’s needs in changing times, we will have to adapt our services to evolve with the children and families we serve.

Q: Why are relationships between for-profit business and non-profit organizations important to our community?I believe “community” is bigger than any zip code or neighborhood. When leaders from for-profit businesses bring their experience, insight, and connections to nonprofit organizations it can help the nonprofit tighten operations, think more strategically, and ultimately yield better results.

Q: What drives your desire to help the youth at SVHC?I recognize the obstacles to success for the at-risk youth we serve. I want to break down the obstacles and create an intimate atmosphere for employees who love their job, believe in our mission, and most importantly see the changes in the youth’s behavior, and smiles on their faces when they experience being treated with love.

Q: What challenges do you see the youth we serve struggling with the most? How does SVHC help? Our kids’ challenges consist of alcohol and drug abuse, poor family relationships, gang violence, homelessness, trauma, and abuse. We help the youth who come to us by teaching them healthy alternatives such as using coping skills, and anger management, identifying triggers to behaviors, and improving self-esteem. We lead by example and show the kids what love really is.

Q: In what ways will we continue to evolve our programs in 2015? We are launching an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program –LifeRECOVER to address substance abuse in St. Louis youth. At St. Vincent, we show them healthy alternatives to abusing drugs and alcohol, resorting, to violence, or theft. We are a safe haven, providing them with love as well as shelter, food, and other basic necessities.
