Two decades ago the Thani Talk

newsletter was called Nonthaburi

Neigborhood Reach, named after the

volunteer group that published it.

Back then it was a 10 to 12-page

publication photocopied at the ISB

print shop. It was printed on lemon

yellow or canary yellow paper and

held together with a single staple.

The inaugural issue had a run of 300

copies. Today, our 52-page magazine

reaches 1,400 households. Money for

printing the formerly ad-free

newsletter used to come from

donations at coffee mornings. Now

advertising supports not just the

printing costs, but also NNR charities.

suggested minimum donation is 1,000 baht per person. There also will be a charity raffle. Who

knows what you might win, maybe even your husband/wife’s Christmas gift.

Ao Nang, Krabi Province, Thailand.

Car washed atop a building in Khao Lak.

In the early morning hours of December 26, 2004, my

oldest son noticed something peculiar at our highrise

apartment outside of Nichada Thani. Although the

apartment was quiet and calm, he heard and saw that the

water in the toilet bowl was agitated and splashing around.

Little did we realize that there had been a magnitude 9.2

earthquake with an epicenter near Aceh, Indonesia. Hours

later, a massive tsunami would devastate southern Thai

beaches, as it had already done to other countries bordering

the Pacific Rim.

The South Asian earthquake and tsunami, among the

most powerful and deadliest in history, claimed more than a

quarter million lives. In Thailand alone, the death toll

reached an estimated 8,212.

Also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami because it

occurred the day after Christmas, the devastating disaster

and the shocking power unleashed by Mother Nature that

day forever changed people’s lives.

My family had planned to leave in a few days for the La

Flora resort in Khao Lak. We were waiting for my nephew

to arrive from the United States. By the time he landed in

Bangkok, La Flora’s beachside villas were in splinters.

Instead of taking my nephew to Khao Lak, we took him

to Big C to buy donation supplies (toiletries, clothing, food,

underwear) and drove out to Thammasat University’s

Rangsit campus where donations were sorted in the

gymnasium. Near a central area where information about

missing persons was collected, exchanged, and posted,

injured survivors who could walk on their own and who had

been transported to Thammasat for housing, gathered for

assistance. Along with other volunteers, we sat in the

volunteers area with stickers on our shirts indicating what

languages we could speak, ready to translate for incoming

survivors if needed.

Our Nonthaburi community did not escape unscathed.

On that day, many local expatriate families were vacationing

down south at Phuket, Khao Lak and other Thai beaches.

Frantic calls were made. Not all were successful, since

many phone lines and cell towers had been demolished.

Everyone was trying to check on friends and family.

Sadly, heart-wrenching news arrived. Karin and Petro

Berkhout were severely injured, and their 6-year-old twins

Job and Maria, 1st graders at ISB, were missing. There was

also tragic news about the Reggie and Grace Shiu family,

who used to live at Samakkee Place. Their sons attended

ISB before Reggie’s employer, the Accor hotel chain,

My son was 6 when the tsunami of 2004 swept across Asia. He was the youngest member of our family,

yet the devastation of the tsunami had the most impact on him as he lost his two dear friends. His

classmates, Job and Maria Berkhout, who were twins from the Netherlands, had been his friends and

playmates for years. They were both in and out of our home on many an afternoon or Saturday mornings.

It was my son who had to go back to class that Monday morning after

Christmas break and face the empty desk where Maria was supposed to

be, as he was seated directly across from her. At that time we didn’t

know if the twins were just missing, or something worse. We couldn’t

bear to think that this would not have a happy ending.

I have often wondered what was going through my son’s mind during

that time in first grade. He was too young to verbalize his thoughts at the

time. But 10 years later, he still has some very distinct memories he has

agreed to share. (see his story on p. 12).

The 2004 tsunami, the ensuing search for Job and Maria, and all the emotion and turmoil that followed

became a defining period of time for our family for many reasons. As a young mother I never thought I

would have to help my 6-year-old learn to deal with the death of his friends. I wasn’t ready to deal with it

myself so how was I supposed to help a 6-year-old cope? Our experience with the 2004 tsunami is

something we talk about and reflect upon often, although it is still difficult. It has changed us and

continues to shape us and it will be a part of us for years to come. We all think of Job and Maria often

and miss them dearly. Wendy Van Bramer

transferred him to Shanghai. The Shiu family had

flown in from Shanghai to spend Christmas break

at the Sofitel in Khao Lak. The entire Shiu family,

except for the youngest daughter, Zoe, perished

during the tsunami.

ISB teacher Steve Perkins, who taught Nicolas,

said, "I taught Nick here at ISB in the fifth grade. I

remember him for his love of life, and his desire to

learn. He was so fun-loving! I specifically

remember him in the Human Growth and

Development unit. Such a character.....:) I'm glad

to have known him, but saddened deeply by his

passing."

Accor held a memorial service for Reggie and

his family at Bangkok’s Sofitel Central Plaza and

set up a scholarship fund for little Zoe. She later

left Thailand to live with relatives in Singapore.

The 2004 Tsunami will always be an indelible

part of our community’s memory. Remembering

those who lost their lives is one way of honoring

them on this important anniversary.

“I Forgot to Say Goodbye”

I forgot to say goodbye…..... They had already left

for their Christmas break holiday in Khao Lak and

I had forgotten to say goodbye to them on their

way out our back door. I must have been too busy

packing my bag or picking up the toys that lay on

the ground because by the time I was done, they

were already gone. I hadn’t even remembered to

wish them a happy birthday. I knew they wouldn’t

be back in the neighborhood until a week after their

actual birthday on December 27th, so I had hoped I

would get to wish them a happy birthday early -

before they left for their Christmas holiday. But

that didn’t matter now; they never made it that far.

Many people watch soap operas. As they watch a

character have an emotional break down, they may

think something along the lines of “Ok, she’s

overreacting, no one does that in real life. No one

really acts like that!” I know because I have often

thought the same thing myself. I soon found out

first-hand that in real life, all the feelings become

even more extreme. Especially when I learned of

the death of my childhood friends. “I forgot to say

goodbye! I forgot to say goodbye!” Over and over

I’d say in my head to myself. I’d beat myself up for

it. But for some reason, I couldn’t say it out loud.

Instead, I jumped at the first chance to visit Khao

Lak and the area where they’d lost their lives, so

that I could help rebuild one of the nearby schools.

I took every opportunity available to visit, and I

ended up spending most of my time while there

interacting with the students of the R35 School.

These students were children who had also lost

loved ones on that very same day. But their smiles

now, their joy, comforted me in ways I didn’t know

were possible. They made me feel closer to the

ones I had lost myself.

To this day, I take part in events that involve the R35 School whenever I can. I hate saying goodbye to

the students when the fun is over, but they’re always full of handshakes and hugs. And even when I visit

their school I’m sometimes able to take the chance to wish my friends a happy birthday.

his childhood playmates Job and

Maria Berkhout.

My family was in Kenya visiting relatives when

the tsunami of 2004 struck and changed the lives

of so many people. It was many days before we

knew for sure which of our many friends were

affected, since we knew most of our neighbors

were planning beach vacations that Christmas.

When we heard that Karin and Petro were

seriously injured and that Job and Maria had not

yet been found, we prayed with hope for the best,

and dreaded the worst.

When we returned to Thailand, I went immediately to visit Karin and Petro in the hospital ICU. They

were both so badly injured that we were not sure they would recover from their injuries.

As each day went by without Maria and Job being found, we began to lose hope, and despair began to

take hold. Many weeks later, after their deaths were confirmed, grief became our constant companion.

I visited Karin and Petro several times a week, often just sitting quietly, sometimes crying with them,

sometimes trying so hard to not say anything stupid that would cause them pain. In between those visits I

clutched my own children to me and tried not to be annoyed with their tantrums and messes - these trials

were so insignificant compared to my friends' grief. These trials were in fact a tremendous blessing - oh,

how my friends wished they could clean up their childrens' spilled milk or wait out a tantrum!

Many months passed and we began to discuss ways to honor our

memories of Job and Maria, to celebrate the beauty of their young lives,

to allow some measure of joy and hope to be born from this tragedy.

Karin and Petro are teachers, and they wanted underprivileged Thai

children to be able to attend school and dream of a brighter future.

Maria and Job both loved to run and took pride in being the fastest in

their classes. We decided to organize a fun run to raise money for

scholarships, and the Job and Maria Charity Fun Run was born.

Just before the first Job and Maria Charity Fun Run, a climbing boulder

at the kindergarten playground was commissioned in a touching

memorial service. Petro started the race for the 6-7 year olds, who raced

to 'Star Wars' and 'The Garden Song', songs loved by Maria and Job.

In the second year of the event, Karin and Petro attended the race each

with a beautiful Thai baby boy on their hips. Twins Sybrun and Tjebbe

would be adopted by Karin and Petro later that year, and their lives as

parents would begin again. The miracle of how these orphaned boys

and orphaned parents found one another is an exciting roller-coaster of

a story for another day.

Caryn Macky shares memories of

her friends the Berkhouts and the

establishment of the Job and

.

This December marks 10 years since the devastation of the tsunami, and 10 years of rebuilding lives

and families. As part of that rebuilding, the Job and Maria Charity Fun Run will celebrate its 8th

year of raising money for our scholarship students. These students have given their families hope as

they attend school and plan for their futures. Some of these students are coping with handicapped

parents, the fear of unreliable income for the family, and the insecurities of a fluctuating economy.

We have now raised enough money to ensure that each of these students is able to attend school

through university if they so choose. As sufficient funds permit, we will support additional students

and bring hope to their families as well.

On January 16th, 2015, the 8th annual Job and Maria Charity Fun Run will be held at the ISB track

at 4:30 pm. There will be races for each age group, so children and adults of all ages are encouraged

to come and enjoy a fun evening of competition. If you are interested in volunteering your time to

help the event run smoothly - such as helping with registration, starting the races or keeping track of

the winners at the finish line - please contact Caryn Macky at [email protected].

Dear Readers,

Ten years ago, the tsunami took everything we were. It is only because of the tremendous support of

everyone close to us, that we were able to pick up the pieces and start our lives again. It was a hard

journey, and in some ways this journey is still ongoing.

Currently, we live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Karin works from home and cares for Tjebbe,

Sybren and Petro. Petro works as a Dutch teacher at the British School of Amsterdam. The boys attend

Grade 2 at a local elementary school and excel in (field) hockey. The cats that Maria and Job selected

from a litter at ISB are still with us and are slowly growing old, a living memory from bygone days.

We lead a quiet life here; we try to at least. Amsterdam, this part of the city even, was our home before

we moved to Thailand in 1994 and we returned to it in 2008. At that time we had pieced together a

sufficient number of fragments; chips and bits we were able to dig up and find with the aid and love of

people at ISB, Nichada, and PopSuk.

The adoption of our twin boys, Tjebbe and Sybren, soon became the new pivotal part of our lives.

Throughout, and after the adoption procedure, we received such an enormous support, that it left us

speechless at times. We both believe it to be doubtful that our lives with the boys would have come

around without the assistance and love of you all. We are so grateful that we were able to adopt them

in Pakkret. It is in essence what enabled us to carry on. They are the treasure that filled the void.

We cannot even start to name the colleagues, friends, maids, acquaintances, doctors, guards, shop

workers, and strangers even who we owe gratitude beyond measure. And it is so moving to realise that

everyone around our old home and workplaces still care for us. We enjoyed a lot of that heartwarming

feeling when we were back in Nichada for a brief visit in 2012.

We will revisit our old home in the future again. We look forward to meeting you all again. We cannot

come back to live amongst you all again because our visit also taught us that a great pain resurfaces

when we roam our old neighbourhood, the scenes of our former lives. But we will be back to share

more of our continuous journey with you and enjoy your unremitting support and love. For which we

cannot thank you enough, ever.

In gratitude, with love,

Karin, Petro, Tjebbe and Sybren

NNR Charity Bazaar Thani Talk ~DecThani Talk ~DecThani Talk ~DecThani Talk ~Dec----2014/Jan20152014/Jan20152014/Jan20152014/Jan2015

The NNR Bazaar held on November 6 was another record-breaking year,

and many charities will benefit from your generosity. Thank you so much

to all the wonderful people who live in our community and beyond for your

support. Please see the following pages for a report on the projects we are

funding immediately.

The Bazaar would not be possible without our amazing volunteers. I would

like to thank Bazaar Coordinator Jo McGregor and her team - Charlotte

Sanders, Tipwan Smagpong, Kris Smuts, Linda Feltham, Cathy

Sackett, Natalie Lollback, and Belinda Currie. On behalf of Jo and her team and the NNR

Board, I would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped on the day. It was a very fun

atmosphere, and the feedback we received from customers and vendors was very positive. We are

already looking at ways to improve and tweak for next year.

We are also very grateful for the support of our major sponsors - Chevron, Halliburton, Harrow

International School Bangkok, Ford, Nichada, ISB, and Asian Tigers. Our contributions

toward helping our local community are made possible by their continued support. I would also

like to thank Coke and Bumrungrad Hospital for donating the water for vendors, volunteers, and

customers. It was a hot day and it was much appreciated!

Cheers,

Mare

Dog Hotel Pampers Your Pooch

Need a place to board your dog during the school break? There is a great place around here, "Friendly

Dog Village." It is located on Samakee road, a short drive from Nichada's main gate. This is a boutique

hotel for dogs that is managed by veterinarians. It offers long term, short term, and day care service for

your dogs.

I live in Nichada, and I send my dog there every weekend. I arrange for Dr. Best to pick up my beagle,

Alpha, on Saturday mornings and drop off on Sunday evenings. Alpha is waiting by the front gate for

Dr. Best every Saturday morning.

My next door neighbor also sends her dog to Friendly Dog Village. I am a very satisfied customer and

I would like to recommend this place to our Nichada community. It is a great place for dogs to learn

social skills. There is a large enclosed yard for your dog to run free under the supervision of their

professional staff. The veterinarians offer good advice, flea control drops, and vaccinations all in one

place. There is also a pet shop for all your dog’s needs.

Stop by and see how happy the dogs are at "Friendly Dog Village" or call Dr. Best for more

information at 094-941-5195. The facility opens from 8 am - 8 pm daily. Reserve your dog's space for

the holidays before it is too late!

If you’re looking for more options in Nichada for your little one,

there is a new branch of the Little Gym now in operation in the

Clark Hatch room above Starbucks.

Classes are 45 minutes long and have a limit of 8 kids per class to

ensure a good instructor-child ratio. Classes are offered at the

following times every Tuesday:

• 9:30am: 2-3 years

• 10:30am: 1-2 years

• 11:30am: 4-12 months

• 4pm: 2-3 years (same format as the 9:30 class)

Classes cost 600 baht for one class or 2000 baht for four classes.

The Nichada Branch offers one free trial class, as well

as no membership fee. (This is a significant savings, as

Little Gym membership is normally 3200 baht per

year or 7500 baht for a lifetime membership.)

Khun Sue, the owner of the Nichada and Central

Chaengwattana branches, says she may expand

depending on class sizes and community needs.

My two year old was skeptical at first but loved it by

the end. Happy tumbling!

My family of four recently traveled to Kota Kinabalu, on the island of Borneo, in Malaysia. The

main purpose of our visit was to see the native orangutans. Orangutans are an endangered

species due to massive deforestation in both the Malaysian and Indonesian sides of Borneo. It

is also the only species of great ape to be found in Asia.

While both countries have various rehabilitation and protected forest areas in which to view

the orangutan in their natural habitat, we chose the Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort which serves as

a sanctuary for orphaned orangutan babies. These young orangutans remain at the sanctuary

until they are six years old, then they are transferred to Sepilok, an affiliated sanctuary for

further rehabilitation before being reintroduced into the wild.

The children were signed up to be “rangers for a day,” which lasted about two and a half hours.

In that time, they wore the ranger uniform (a hat and polo shirt that they keep), prepared food

for the orangutans and local deer, received a brief education about the animals, then waited on

the viewing platform to watch the orangutans feed and interact. The children spent this time

with the park rangers and meeting parents after the viewing on the platform. The parents and

any other people signed up to view the great apes met for a briefing and video presentation

before they proceeded to the platform. After a short ten-minute walk into the forest, we waited

for the hungry animals to appear. We didn’t wait long. Two of the three orangutans came to eat

and play. They were as curious and playful as any human toddler. It was a fascinating

experience, definitely one to check off the bucket list.

Though seeing the orangutans was a highlight and the purpose of our trip, there were many

more activities available. The beach was beautiful with soft, white sand and clear, cool water.

The resort offers many water sport rentals such as water bikes, jet skis, and kayaks. They also

have body boards free of charge. There is a beautiful kids club but my children, ages 8 and 6,

preferred the beach and the water slides in the pool. We also hired bicycles to ride around the

resort.

Jen Marinos

There are many different excursions.

My family did the white water

rafting which was appropriate for

ages four and up. The rapids were

levels one and two and we felt safe

with our guide, helmets, and life

vests. It was a lot of fun with great

scenery. They also offer excursions

into the mangroves to view fireflies

in the evening or river cruises in the

daytime. The resort has several

activities within the

sanctuary such as the

night canopy walk to view

nocturnal animals, or a

morning tea with bird

watching. We learned

however that it is wise to

book in advance, before

arriving in Kota Kinabalu.

Luckily we pre-booked

our orangutan viewing

and the kids’ ranger

experience. However we

wanted to do several

activities in the sanctuary

that were already booked

up by the time we arrived.

We had a great family holiday and

recommend it to anyone who

wants a fun, unique, and active

holiday with the family.

Egg Nog Spiced

Christmas Cake

Recipe by Dana Whiteley

My family loves egg nog, and nothing says “It’s Christmas” more than

seeing it for the first time in the grocery store. We put it in everything:

milkshakes, lattes, pancakes, and bundt cake! The base of this recipe

came from a blog at starsflourpower.blogspot.com, but then I needed more egg nog and spice

taste, so I tweaked it a bit. Enjoy! You will definitely want to add the extra glaze!

For the cake

1 cup butter, softened

3 cups sugar

6 large eggs

3 cups sifted cake flour

¾ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

1 cup egg nog

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 Tbsp dark rum or brandy (optional)

1 tsp ground cinnamon

¾ tsp ground nutmeg

½ tsp ground allspice

¼ tsp ground cloves

Directions

1. Grease and flour a 12 cup bundt pan. It is important to use the larger pan or you will have

issues with the cake falling (trust me, I speak from experience!). If you have a large angel

food cake pan, that would probably work too.

2. Preheat oven to 350F.

Cake

1. In a stand mixer with paddle attachment, beat butter on medium speed for about 2 minutes

or until creamy.

2. Gradually add sugar, beating 5-7 minutes.

3. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing just until yolk is incorporated.

4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add to butter and sugar mixture,

For the glaze

1 cup sifted powdered sugar

2 Tbsp + 1 tsp of heavy cream or whipping cream

(Make a little extra to drizzle on when serving.)

the Aroi Dee cookbook

alternating with egg nog, starting and ending with flour mixture.

5. Stir on low speed just until blended after each addition.

6. Stir in vanilla and, if desired, rum/brandy.

7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan.

8. Stir the cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves in the remaining batter.

9. Spoon spiced batter over plain batter and swirl together using a knife.

10.Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.

11.Cool in pan for 15 minutes on a wire rack.

12.Remove from pan and cool on rack.

Glaze

1. Combine sifted powdered sugar and heavy cream.

2. Transfer cooled cake to a plate and pour glaze over it.

3. In you are like me, you will be too impatient to wait for the cake to cool completely. If you find

yourself in this predicament, you can pour the glaze over the cake while it is still warm, and,

using a spatula, spread it over the entire cake. After it hardens, you can use any remaining glaze

to drizzle over cake when serving.

Restaurant Review:

Bao & Buns If you’re like me, you enjoy a nice fluffy Chinese-style steamed bun.

You also enjoy crispy fried chicken, some shredded pork, pickled

greens, and tangy sri racha sauce. Ever wonder what it would all taste

like mixed together? Now’s your chance!

I encourage you to pay a visit to Bao & Buns, a small establishment at

the end of Sukhamvit Soi 33, which serves up delicious Taiwanese street

burgers, or gua bao. A New Yorker like me would describe them as

burgers or sliders. However, instead of a bun, the contents are lovingly placed inside a sliced steamed

bun.

I understand that the menu changes frequently but is always short and focused. On offer during my

family’s visit was:

• The pork option: braised pork, pickled mustard greens, crushed honey peanuts and coriander,

• The chicken option: fried chicken, iceberg lettuce, mayo, spices, and sri racha sauce, or

• The veggie option: five-spice tofu and mushrooms, pickled mustard greens, and crushed honey

peanuts.

All these baos were 90 baht and delicious. As a side, they offer fried

taro ‘string’. Finally for dessert they offered Thai-ice tea ice cream,

taro ice cream, or coconut ice cream in a bao.

When you walk in, you place your order with the friendly English-

speaking staff. Although the team of cooks behind the counter will get

your food to you quickly, don’t confuse this with fast food. Each

sandwich is made to order. You can use the free Wi-Fi and sip on a

lychee and passion fruit soda while you wait. If there is one drawback

to the place, it is its size. It is quite small. There is seating for about 12-

15 people inside and a few seats outside. We had a table, but also

learned that if you order the baos to go, they will pack the filling

separately to ensure it doesn’t get all soggy on the way back to Nichada.

The food is tasty, unique and fun. The kids loved the baos and taro strings, as did mom and dad. If

you’re downtown near Emporium looking for lunch or for the latest fad in sandwiches and street

food, I can definitely recommend the Taiwanese street burgers, served up fresh daily at Bao & Bun.

If delicious sandwiches aren’t enough to tempt you to visit, I’d also mention that next door to Bao &

Bun is the Jaiyen café. This place is very popular for its delicious, if unusual, ice cream flavors. They

have a variety of desserts on offer, but ice cream is the main attraction. Our family sampled cookies

and cream, Thai ice-tea and fudge, caramel popcorn (with

popcorn mixed in!), and earl gray. All were a big hit with the

family.

Both Bao & Bun and Jaiyen café are found at the end of Soi

33. At the end of the soi you turn left and you’ll see these

places on your right, next to Peppina.
