South Central does face health
challenges
In many ways our health outcomes are good. However:
• 180,000 over 65s didn’t get a flu vaccination last year
• Over 400,000 people smoke. 26,000 hospital admissions due to
smoking
• About 1.8 million people are overweight
• Over half a million people have uncontrolled hypertension
• At least 50,000 more people with diabetes by 2035
• In Thames Valley nearly 30,000 people with diabetes have a
cholesterol level above 5mmol/l
• Over 30,000 people with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation
• Over 100 infant deaths per year
• 250 suicides per year

The three gaps
• Health and wellbeing gap, care gap and
finance gap all connected
• Reducing the health and wellbeing gap can
help to reduce the finance gap too.

Thames Valley Strategic Clinical
Network Commissioning Guidance
• The Thames Valley SCN produces an annual
Commissioning Guidance bringing national
priorities and thought leadership to the local
context, benchmarking systems and providing
recommendations for action. So we distil not only
‘what to do’ but also ‘how to do it’ with best
practice examples and sources of help.

Thames Valley Strategic Clinical
Network
• Deliver nationally mandated activities. Working on further
strengthening our skills. Lucky to have talented staff and
clinical leads and we’ve been working on leveraging
synergies within the team and developing standardised ways
of working so each clinical area can expect the same
excellent quality of support from the Strategic Clinical
Network.
• Developing an inspiring vision, being clear about the
outcomes we want to achieve and ensuring that we have
robust partnerships and relationships with colleagues to
deliver

My desire for the day
• The purpose of the day is to be helpful to the audience

• Pick up something at each session you go to
• Feedback the specifics to colleagues when you get back
to the ranch
• Communicate widely when you get back to your own
health economies
• Implement any good ideas you come across today when
you get back to the ranch
