Progress too slow on saving tropical forestsPARIS, 8 June—All but seven percent of the world’s tropical forests are

“managed poorly or not at all” despite efforts to boost sustainability, accordingto a major report released Tuesday.

Forces driving forest destruction across four continents — including risingfood and fuel prices, and growing demand for timber — threaten to overwhelmfuture conservation efforts, warned the 420-page study by the Japan-basedInternational Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), an intergovernmental agencygroup that promotes sustainable use of forests.

“Less than 10 percent of all forests are sustainably managed, and we expectdeforestation to continue,” said Steven Johnson, ITTO’s communications director.

“The economic rationale is just so compelling. Revenue streams coming fromstanding forests just can’t compete against conversion to agriculture or biofuelcrops, pasture land for livestock, or palm oil plantation,” he said by phone.

Facebook, Microsoft back AT&T’sT-Mobile buy

WASHINGTON, 8 June—Facebook, Microsoft, Oracle, Yahoo! and othertechnology leaders have come out in support of AT&T’s proposed $39 billionacquisition of T-Mobile saying it could help meet rising demand for wirelessbroadband. “Today, consumers are increasingly using smartphones, tablets, laptops and other mobile devices to wirelessly connect to the Internet and toeach other,” the companies said in a letter to Federal CommunicationsCommission chairman Julius Genachowski.

“As a result, consumer demand for wireless broadband is dramaticallyincreasing and our wireless networks are struggling to keep pace with thedemand,” they said in the letter published on the FCC website. “AT&T’sacquisition of T-Mobile represents a near term means of addressing the risingconsumer demand,” they said. “For example, the merged company will beable to leverage a larger network of cell sites allowing greater reuse ofspectrum and increasing the wireless broadband capacity of the network.”

“The FCC must seriously weigh the benefits of this merger and approveit,” the companies said.—Internet

Wrinkles can predict woman’s bonebreak risk

WASHINGTON, 8 June—Wrinkles on a woman’sface may be able to predicthow likely she is to sufferfrom bone fractures, according to a US studyreleased Monday.

That’s because thelevel of proteins in theskin and bones are linked,so if a woman’s face andneck are severelywrinkled, she faces ahigher risk of bonebreakage due to bonedensity loss, said YaleUniversity researchers.

Researchers exa-mined 114 early post-menopausal women,whose last menstrual

period was within threeyears, as part of anongoing clinical trial atnumerous sites in theUnited States.

They measured thewomen’s skin at 11locations on the face andneck, both visually andusing a device known asa durometer to assess howrigid the skin was on theforehead and cheek.

Bone mass anddensity were measuredwith a portable ultrasoundand X-ray. “We found thatdeepening and worseningskin wrinkles are relatedto lower bone densityamong the study

participants,” said LubnaPal, associate professor inthe Department ofObstetrics, Gynecologyand Reproductive Scienceat Yale School ofMedicine. “The worse thewrinkles, the lesser thebone density, and thisrelationship wasindependent of age or offactors known toinfluence bone mass.”

More resilient skinwas linked to better bonedensity, said the studyreleased at the EndocrineSociety meeting in thenortheastern city ofBoston, Massachusetts.
