NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

_________________________________________________________________________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER The Spiral walk enchanted us all again last week. Parents thank us for these beautiful moments, but it is the reverence and awe of the children participating that make these festivals so beautiful. Everyone in the room creates the atmosphere. Thank you all, because they really were precious moments. Many thanks also to our wonderful assistants, Marisa, Julie and Tonia, who do so much work behind the scenes, both with and without the children, to make these moments the truly beautiful spectacle that they are. Thank you all so much for your patience when the Winter Festival was postponed last week. When the weather forecast was checked first thing that Thursday morning it was for thunderstorms between 3 and 6 p.m. Hence we decided to make the decision early and move the Festival. We trust that it gave you time to have a quiet evening, an early night and get plenty of rest before the last week of term. Let’s hope the weather tomorrow is better. So that means that our Winter Festival and Lantern Walk will be at 5p.m. tomorrow (Thursday 25th June). Rug up warm and bring your peaceful energy to co-create a marvelous evening for the children. The Teacher’s Play will be the climax of the morning. You are invited to arrive at 11.50. Gather in your own kindergarten gardens and we will all join together for the play. Kindergarten will end for ALL children after the Play. There is no afternoon school for the Rainbows and no Kindy care. For most of you the Winter Festival will be the end of term. Please enjoy a restful holiday. The children will need the time to recharge their batteries and have quiet play dates with friends. Enjoy!

WITHIN the darkness of the night I long to be a light,

That seeds be planted, small but glowing, Seeds of brightness which starts growing…

Soon, in darkness round me, empty, void of light, God’s Word resounds, and all things sparkle pure

And clear and bright.

Jo missed a trick for a classic photo last week. Some children had been playing cubbies under the tables and when she went to help pack up she pulled back the chairs to find a beautiful tea table set up for two people under the table. Each cup had a saucer and a little block of wood so daintily balanced on the saucer as a biscuit. There were teapots, place mate, sugar bowls and spoons. Absolutely classic. Instead she offers this. Playing at lighting candles the kindergarten way, complete with taper and songs. An argument heard between two children: “if you were an egg, I would pick you up and throw you on the ground.” “If I were a dinosaur I would eat you like a human being”

A future Shakespeare? Early literacy emerging during play in Marri Kindy.

We have to keep dry somehow!

ALCHEMISTS NEWS Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son.

Our story's set in Ireland long ago,

A king once ruled a county, His Son you'll get to know!

Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son.

As some trees grow straight And others crooked grow,

The eldest of his sons, Grew wild and uncontrolled.

Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son Ah, Ah, the King of Ireland's Son.

To be sure, to be sure, we're having great craic here listening, laughing, and learning about the King of Ireland's Son. In case you thought it was all Guinness, shamrocks, and leprechauns, well you'd be sorely mistaken! There is of course good reason why we enter the realm of the Emerald Isle. Like an extended fairy story, The King of Ireland’s Son provides imagery of an individual who is striving to develop. The King’s Son, in meeting the experiences laid along the pathway of his journey through life, is tested as to his strength of purpose, his inner ‘substance’ and ‘qualities’. He grapples with his ‘lower’ (or less conscious nature) and finds his way through difficult encounters, by virtue of his ‘higher’ (or more conscious) nature. In this way, he at last comes to maturity (individuality) as King. None of this would be achieved without the help of other beings (his companions), who guide and support him, sharing the journey with him. Such a story is a real support and guide to the growing child. The child’s development toward individuality is not undertaken alone. The child can develop an inner trust in the world around, to offer experiences for growth (choices and consequences) as well as companionship and guidance. It provides imagery for the idea that development is worth striving for, even whilst it involves struggle. The Alchemists are nearing the end of part I of this this epic Steiner classic and my goodness they are writing and drawing A LOT. Sometimes when you are immersed in something you can forget a certain level of reality, which is where I find myself with this incredible group of hard-working individuals. All the children can be extremely proud of their efforts, continued determination and striving which in itself is a wonderful parallel to the story being brought to them. It never ceases to amaze me just how much the Steiner curriculum truly meets the children and how it challenges them, supports them and honours the various developmental milestones they reach. It's an honour to watch it all unfold. May you enjoy well-deserved sleep-ins and warm, cosy nights by the fire with hot chocolate! Have a great holiday everyone, Blessings, Yvette Ghouse

KOORRDJENANGIN NEWS In the throes of the ‘Ancient Indian’ main lesson, this morning, the Koorrdjenangin class were immersed in a traditional Indian dance workshop. Rakhi, a classically trained Indian dance teacher introduced the children to a variety of mudras; symbolic hand gestures. Below are some photos illustrating the fun we all had learning a classical art form.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

_________________________________________________________________________________ FAREWELL AND THANK YOU – SILVER TREE PLAYGROUP

As my time as Silver Tree Playgroup Leader comes to a close, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say what an absolute honour it has been to welcome so many families into our school through playgroup. Over the past 9 years, I have seen these families grow and develop, building our school community into what it is today. I have always felt very privileged to hold the beauty and rhythm in all my work as a Playgroup Leader and as a Mothers Group Leader (which I created a number of years ago). I have been able to utilise all of my experience in Midwifery, Pastoral Care and Early Childhood Steiner Training to provide education and support in the sacred art of parenting. I have to say however, that I have received so much more than I have given out. You have opened your hearts to me and shared your precious stories, and I can remember thinking on many occasions, ‘I can’t believe I actually get paid to do this!’ I have just so loved the work that I have done. But now my career is heading off in another direction, and I will be working for the Child and Adolescent Community Health Service. It will be very hard to say goodbye and there is a certain amount of heaviness in my heart. But I hope to bring all that I have experienced here at Silver Tree into my new role. It has been great getting to know so many of you and seeing our school grow from strength to strength. As our school continues to grow, may it always keep a strong sense of community, and be true to Rudolph Steiner’s indications for the education of the child, as this is what makes it so unique. I will finish my farewell by singing the goodbye song we sing at the end of every playgroup.

“Good bye everybody, good bye every body We’ve had a good time we’ve had a good play

We’ll see you all again.........” With much love and gratitude, Lesley Willow

FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD Thank you for those parents who braved the cold weather and attended the recent School AGM. The following people are now on the School Board and various members have become office bearers. Zac Leithhead - new to the Board and deputy chairperson Morgan Ysbincek - new to the Board Anthony MacLeod - Education and Mentor Philip Quenby - Treasurer Keith Hutchins - Secretary Bruce Uchiyama-Lee - Chairperson The role of the Board is to oversee the operations of the school. The School Administrator is employed by the Board to ensure the day to day operations meet with the mission of the school and the government expectations of a school. Funding for the school is approximately 60% Government grants and 40% student fees. The Board is pleased to note that since 2010 the school has experienced 5 years of significant growth and more importantly a great deal of stability. As a relatively small school it punches above its weight in terms of the quality of teaching and learning experiences for the children and well-resourced modern buildings and facilities. There is always a balance between what is needed and what can be provided and the Board acknowledges that the greatest strength of our school is the wonderful people who work here and the families that choose to put their trust in them. It is pleasing to see a dynamic strategic plan being forged for the school and the Board urges you to give feedback when offered the chance. One of the big challenges for the Board and the school is ensure we can meet the conditions

Waldorf taught me how to learn

When most people think of spring break they don’t imagine high school seniors going back to their k-8 school, but that is exactly what I did. I was offered the opportunity to intern with Allison Budschalow in the Development office, and it has been such a great time. It always feels a bit like coming home when I return to The Waldorf School of Philadelphia, seeing the familiar faces and spaces, but this time I got to see the school through a much different lens than the one I have known most of my life. The world around me has changed a lot since I left Waldorf. I felt a little rebellious traipsing into the building with my laptop in tow, headphones dangling out of my bag. I spend most of my time at boarding school, in a world where iPhones are essentially a sixth finger and email-checking-addiction should have its own rehab. I spend hours every day on my computer writing papers and doing research. My math class has come a long way from clapping out times tables in circles; now it starts every day with a quiz on my smart phones before diving in calculus curves. The days of main lesson books and practicing recorder seem like distant memories (although I do keep knitting in my dorm room for the rare moments of free time). It seems that no matter how much Waldorf makes a technology free world of learning work, the rest of the world demands it. But I never found the adjustment uncomfortable. In fact, I had a much easier time picking up Excel when it was introduced in my freshman year Biology class than most of my “tech savvy” classmates. Making PowerPoints and Prezis has never been a source of anxiety, but something that was easy to navigate and understand. I can’t say for sure how much that is a product of the way that Waldorf teaches students to explore and think for themselves, but it definitely played a role. I think a lot of this comes down to how I describe my years at WSP to people now: Waldorf taught me how to learn. I was so excited to be able to put these skills to use with the Development office, helping out with the spring auction and researching for grants. As I folded papers to mail out, I was brought back to the mornings spent folding wax paper stars—if only I had a bone folder, I thought. Thanks to WSP for inviting me back, hopefully I will be back in the summer to continue helping the office in structuring an alumni network. Written by Sarah Cornelius Class of 2010 WSP alumna and currently a senior at Phillips Academy, Andover, Sarah has been accepted to Reed College and intends to pursue linguistics, anthropology and computer science. http://lovinglearning.org/blog/spring-breaker/

P&F MEETING

The next Parents and Friends meeting is on 25th of June, 8:45am in the Playgroup building. You are invited to come along and listen to what we are doing and give us some feedback or provide suggestions for further fundraisers. We look forward to seeing new faces join us!

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Saturday 27th June 7am – 4pm This is a great little fundraiser that raises quite a lot of money, for very little work (last years’ takings +/- $2300). All of the money raised will go directly back to things that are needed at the school. All that we require is for you to do a 2 hour shift (or more if you can/want). It is a good one for Dads to get involved in and to meet other parents from the school. Contact Claire Ng (Mum of Banjo in Class 1 and Tooi in Class 4/5) if you can help on the day.

P&F News cont… PARENTS AND FRIENDS COMMITTEE UPDATE

Just before our long July break is about to start, we would love to share some wonderful news from the Parents and Friends Committee. A few months ago, on the 27th of March, a keen group of people decided to commit to the Silver Tree Parents & Friends committee 2015! Our team this year: June Tutty (Treasurer), Gabby Dadd (Secretary), Claire Ng (vice-president), executive members Trudie Whitehorn, Zoe Hemsted , Robyn Smith, Marijanna Smith, Maria Cournane and Julie Thornhill (Fundraising), Mei-Bing Toh, Wendy Bushell, Nina Zala, Donna Legge, Helen Arcaro, Mee Cheng Wong, Debbie Targett and Sharna Ridley, Alison Anthoni and Marion Faassen (president). Together we work on events to bring together our school community and we raise money to realise projects or items needed in the school that lack the necessary funding from the school itself. The absolute highlight for the school and all the parents last year was the Open Day. It was a beautiful day that was so well organised by the P&F, faculty, staff and the parents all together. The new P&F 2015 has lots of new faces in its committee; families who only started recently at Silver Tree. We are very lucky that in our committee there is also still a core group of people who have been at the school for several years now. Together we have been working hard in the last couple of months to get to know the school and each other. We are very happy to inform you that during the upcoming holidays the new pathways to Marri Kindy and the playgroup building will be finalised! Fiona Blackham has been busy planning and the P&F is going to pay for it! So you can enjoy a safe and beautiful path to our Kindy and Playgroup area when you get back from your long July holiday. We are also proud to tell you that you will find a beautiful area for your smaller children just beside the shop when you will return in Term 3! Marijanna Smith will build an enclosed area for the little children to play in while you enjoy browsing in the shop or enjoy a cup of coffee! Again; the Parents and Friends Committee raised the money to build it. At the present stage we are working on a community event, a bonfire night somewhere in September. Watch this space for more information. We are also very excited to let you know that at the end of the year we are organising a Christmas Twilight Market. We will keep you informed about all the details. I could go on and on about ArtyCards, soup, market, the shop, sausage sizzle and amazing other plans we have for the future for our school in the Hills. We all love to work together to realise these projects, but there is something I would like to ask you to consider… We would love to have a few more members on our committee. Not necessarily to take up a big role, but just for little things to help us with: a great idea, a bit of moral support, the occasional phone call to make, to fill a roster just once... As the saying goes; many hands make light work! Not only will that help share the load in our committee, you will also find other parents there that you haven’t met before who may become long lasting friends. Feel free to come and join our next meeting, just come along and listen to what we are doing and give us some feedback. You can also contact me at school or via email ([email protected]), talk to one of the other members of the committee or leave a message in our pigeon hole. Keep an eye on our agenda that will be in the newsletter and please do come along this Thursday the 25th of June in the Playgroup building at 8.45 am after drop off! On behalf of the P&F 2015, Marion Faassen

Jorg has generously volunteered countless hours of his time teaching our children and planning and coordinating the school gardening program. We can all be proud of what has been achieved in the garden by students adeptly guided by Jorg and our other gardening volunteers. Much has been accomplished, much has been trialed and learnt from, and much has been nurtured and blissfully eaten. Thank you so much Jorg. We are lucky to have your continued support and involvement in the GEMC. And thank you also… To Debbie Target and Juniper Boultbee for their generous donation of organic vegetable seedlings that they have propagated by seed. These will be planted during gardening lessons.

Dear Parents,

Re. School Fundraising

The Silver Tree Steiner School P&F have decided to participate in the ArtyCards greeting cards fundraising project again this year. We would like to offer you the opportunity to support the school by purchasing greeting cards depicting your child’s artwork. ArtyCard greeting cards add a very personal touch – the cards illustrate a design by your own child!

ArtyCards are excellent quality and very affordable at only $12 per set. Each set comprises of 8 x A6 cards printed on 100% recycled card with 8 self-seal envelopes. The cards are blank inside so you can use these for birthdays, Christmas, thanks you, and any other special occasion.

Please help make our fundraising project a success and raise important fundraising dollars for the school by placing your orders. Complete the form below and return it to the school by 15 August along with the payment (cash, cheque or money order) made payable to Silver Tree Steiner School P&F.
