The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically todescribe the means of grace by which a person, prevented forsome serious reason from sharing in a celebration of theEucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ.

The Book of Common Prayer instructs us that if we offerourselves in penitence and faith, giving thanks for theredemption won by Christ crucified, we may truly ‘eat and drinkthe Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ’, although we cannotreceive the sacrament physically in ourselves.

Introduction to Spiritual Communion

Page 6: th March 2021

1 O thou who camest from abovethe fire celestial to impart, kindle a flame of sacred loveon the mean altar of my heart!

2 There let it for thy glory burnwith inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source returnin humble prayer and fervent praise.

Opening Hymn: O thou who camest from above

Page 7: th March 2021

3 Jesus, confirm my heart's desireto work, and speak, and think for thee;still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up the gift in me.

4 Ready for all thy perfect will,my acts of faith and love repeat;till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete.

Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Prayers of Penitence

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Amen. Lord, have mercy.

All Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Readings

A reading from the book of Exodus (20.1-17 NRSV).

Then God spoke all these words:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before me.4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Page 16: th March 2021

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Readings7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9For six days you shall labour and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

Page 17: th March 2021

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Readings12 Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.13 You shall not murder.14 You shall not commit adultery.15 You shall not steal.16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.17 You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Readings

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians

18 The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written,‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’20Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe.

(1 Corinthians 1:18-25 NRSV).

Page 19: th March 2021

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Readings22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Gospel Reading

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to JohnAll Glory to you, O Lord.

13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’

(2:13-22 NRSV).

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Gospel Reading17His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ 18The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ 21But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and goodto give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son.For in these forty daysyou lead us into the desert of repentancethat through a pilgrimage of prayer and disciplinewe may grow in graceand learn to be your people once again.

Page 32: th March 2021

Through fasting, prayer and acts of serviceyou bring us back to your generous heart.Through study of your holy wordyou open our eyes to your presence in the worldand free our hands to welcome othersinto the radiant splendour of your love.As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feastwith joyful hearts and mindswe bless you for your mercyand join with saints and angels for ever praising you and saying:

Page 33: th March 2021

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,and according to your holy will,these gifts of bread and winemay be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

Page 34: th March 2021

In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it,in remembrance of me.

Jesus Christ is Lord:All Lord, by your cross and resurrection

you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world.

Page 35: th March 2021

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,we bring before you this bread and this cupand we thank you for counting us worthyto stand in your presence and serve you.

Page 36: th March 2021

Send the Holy Spirit on your peopleand gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of all the saints,may praise and glorify you for ever,through Jesus Christ our Lord;
