He had no real interest in living there so decided to sell it all and use the money to live a comfortable life without the need to work. Unfortunately, his ‘easy come, easy go’ approach to the wealth he had inherited led to a life of excess, which included irresponsible amounts of alcohol, drugs and gambling. Within a few years, all the money had gone and the young man’s life ended prematurely because of all the excesses he had indulged in. The wealth which allowed the family to buy such a huge house and land was acquired over many years, starting with an ancestor five generations back who sold fruit from a market stall for most of his life. The young man inherited a fabulous gift and turned it into a curse. I remember having similar thoughts about a student who was born with so much talent and yet ended up in prison because he used his gift for bad rather than good. The gifts we inherit should be the springboard for achieving success in life, but they can also be a curse if they are abused. N. This year, we once again ran a very successful Karakuri competition for Year 8. Students were introduced to mechanisms and modelling, and asked to design their own Karakuri over the Easter holidays to reflect their chosen movement. The standard was extremely high which made choosing the winner a difficult task. The innovative ways that students managed to interpret their designs showed excellent creative skills and an attention to detail. The three winners were: 1. Sacha Storrs-Davies 8E Zelda 2. Adam Hutton 8F James Bond 3. Isabella Constanti 8H Ski Lift The winners received Amazon vouchers and a certificate of excellence. Check out the website for the list of runners up! On Friday 10th June, the annual U14 cricket tournament took place at Dollis cricket fields and EBS entered an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team. 10 teams entered and EBS ‘B’ finished 6th following a brilliant final win against Compton. EBS ‘A’ started the day with a tense draw against Fortismere, followed by wins against Compton and Christ College ‘B’. A superb performance by Alex Molloy in the ‘super over’ qualified us for the final. In a tense final, Christ College ‘A’ just came out on top but the boys did fantastically well to finish second and return home with a silver medal.
