Confucius said,“To learn and at due times to repeat what one has

learnt, is that not after all a pleasure? That friends should come to one

from afar, is this not after all delightful? To remain unsoured even

though one’s merits are unrecognized by others, is that not after all

what is expected of a gentleman?”

—The Analects of Confucius

China

China is one of the largest countries in the world. It covers an area of about 9.6 million square kilometres, which

comprises about 6.5% of the world total land area. Its population of more than one billion accounts for 23% of the

world's population and it has a recorded history of nearly 5,000 years.

The Great Wall, Xi’an’s Terracotta Warriors, the Forbidden City, the Mogao Grottoes: the very names reverberate with

history and legend. Celebrated places and sights abound – this is the land of the Yangtse River, the Silk Route and the

bamboo forests of the panda. Spectacular Guilin brings the vistas of rivers and misty peaks in traditional ink paintings to

life, while far to the west the fabled Tibetan city of Lhasa beckons pilgrims to the ‘roof of the world’.

There are 30 natural and cultural sites already inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; Kunqu Opera and the

Art of Guqin Music are listed as Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity With its 5,000 years of civilization and

wide variety of ethnic groups and customs, China has a very rich and varied cuisine that has become a special part of the

world's food culture.

From acrobatics to martial arts, calligraphy to Chinese opera, the vibrant, distinctive culture of this great land is seen

everywhere.

Introduction to Beijing

Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, is the nation's political

and cultural centre. Some 690,000 years ago, Peking Man lived at Zhoukoudian,

48 kilometres southwest of Beijing. A small town appeared on the present site

of south-western Beijing in 1045 BC. It was named Ji and then changed to

Yan. At the beginning of the 10th century, it was the second capital of the Liao

Dynasty. Subsequently, the city had been the capital of the Jin, Yuan, Ming and

Qing dynasties until 1911.

In the early 1920s Beijing became the cradle of China's new democratic

revolution. The May Fourth Movement against imperialism and feudalism

began here in 1919.

On October 1st, 1949, Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's

Republic of China to the whole world.

Beijing is situated at 40 degrees north and 116 degrees east. It is 43 metres

above sea level and 183 kilometres from the sea. Beijing covers an area of

16,800 square kilometres, 38% of it is fl at land and 62% is mountainous.

Beijing has a continental climate with annual rainfall averaging nearly 700

millimetres, most of it falls in July and August. Winter is dry and

cold and has little snow and 185 days are frost-free. The best time

to visit Beijing is May, September and October, when people enjoy

bright and sunny skies.

As the proud capital of modern China, Beijing is fast becoming

a popular and fashionable tourist destination. And for good

reason too: Beijing is not only the modern political, cultural and

educational centre of China, but it also is well known worldwide

for its numerous historical sites, elegant gardens and beautiful

landscape, such as Forbidden City, The Great Wall, The Ming

Tombs, The Summer Palace, The Temple of Heaven, Tian'anmen

Square, Yonghegong Lamasery (The Lama Temple), Fragrant Hills

Park, Zhongshan Park, The Temple of Azure Clouds, The Temple

of the Reclining Buddha, Beihai Park & Round City, Jingshan Park,

to name only a few.

The Signifi cance of holding the 30th IBBY World Congress

in China to the World as a whole, and to China in particular.

Because the arts of papermaking and printing were discovered in China, we have a long history of publication and

reading, and have made an immense contribution to world civilization. China’s population accounts for a quarter of

world population, and with 367 million young readers, CBBY shoulders the largest task of IBBY’s mission. The year

2006 marks the 20th anniversary of China’s membership in IBBY. Since the beginning of our membership in IBBY

and thanks to the efforts of all the people involved in children’s literature, the fast economic development of China

and the emphasis on education by the Chinese government, the situation of children’s reading, and the publication and

distribution of quality children’s books have improved dramatically. CBBY has played an important role in this process,

but there remains much to be done, since the problem of education and access to books in some poverty-stricken areas

ancient civilizations and the largest developing country

with the biggest number of young people, is a great

historical event, and will have far-reaching signifi cance

in the history of IBBY.
