WelcomeWelcome to the 2020 Festival of Homiletics!
For everyone involved, this has been a step out of our pulpits and buildings and into a liminal space where we needed to discern how God invites us to preach when our churches are closed When we found out that we couldn’t bring you to Atlanta, our presenters, designers, and worship leaders started working tirelessly to bring the festival to you
We never imagined the welcome you would extend to us
At the time of writing, more than 11,000 of you have registered to be with us online, and more than 2,000 have shown your support by purchasing the on-demand recordings Along with our regular visitors from Canada and the United Kingdom, we’ve had conversations with preachers from Australia, Hungary, and Liberia; at least 56 countries outside the United States are represented in the participant list Sponsors and vendors have continued to support the mission of the festival even when we couldn’t offer our typical storefront opportunities I’ve always known that the festival feels like a community, and this year has demonstrated that reality in a new way Thank you
It is our deepest prayer that this offering will feed your soul and spark your creativity in preaching for the year to come
Dawn Alitz
Managing Director, Festival of Homiletics
Welcome, preachers, to a new kind of festival for the new world in which we find ourselves In the past two months, you have had to learn and invent previously unimaginable ways of doing church You have had to pivot and adapt, developing formerly unfathomable ways of being the body of Christ And yet, this is what the church knows how to do so well We have always preached the impossible and proclaimed the unbelievable We have always known how to testify to the good news in the face of futility We are the ones who stare into empty tombs and, instead of seeing defeat and despair, know victory and hope
The theme for the 2020 Festival of Homiletics bears witness to our Creator, who brings that which is dead to life with the very breath of life In coming together this week, from all over this world God loves so very much, we are reminded once again of God’s promise to make all things new, including the church—including us
I pray that you experience this week as a life-giving gift and abundant grace

WALK WITH THE BOLDNESS AND THE ZEAL OF THE APOSTLES
In Acts: Catching up with the Spirit, author and biblical scholar Matthew Skinner provides a broad yet theologically attuned introduction to this important book and its story of the early church learning to bear witness about God’s salvation through Jesus Christ.
Skinner explores six key themes that illustrate the ways in which reading Acts is capable of igniting our imagination about the character of the Christian message, the work of God’s people (the church), and the challenges of living faithfully in a complex and changing world.
Additional components for a six-week study include a DVD featuring Matthew Skinner
and a comprehensive Leader Guide.

About the Festival of HomileticsThe Festival of Homiletics is a weeklong conference that brings together a wide variety of outstanding preachers and professors of homiletics to inspire a discourse about preaching, worship, and culture The event’s goal is to theologically engage the practices of preaching and worship, as well as issues related to congregations in the 21st century Individual preachers are invited to consider various styles and methodologies of preaching in hopes that they will renew their faith and refresh their spirits through engaging worship, lectures, and workshops Throughout the week, speakers aim to inspire preachers in their roles of proclaiming the gospel
The Festival of Homiletics began in 1992 with a gathering of 400 pastors from around the country for the purpose of learning and conversing about preaching in a contemporary context David Howell, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church,
created the festival as an extension of his preaching journal, Lectionary Homiletics
The festival’s ownership, leadership, and planning efforts are now based at Luther Seminary in St Paul, Minnesota Howell continues to consult festival staff in the planning and production process in light of its new team approach: “We continue to demonstrate for people the finest preaching and the finest cutting-edge thinking about preaching, homiletics, church, and culture ”
Festival of Homiletics speakers throughout the years have included William Barber II, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Barbara Brown Taylor, Walter Brueggemann, Diana Butler Bass, Anna Carter Florence, Yvette Flunder, Otis Moss III, Luke Powery, Will Willimon, and Andrew Young
• The Festival of Homiletics is an annual event that averages more than 1,500 attendees each year and has moved between cities including Atlanta; Denver; Minneapolis; Nashville, Tennessee; San Antonio; and Washington, D C
• Broadly ecumenical, 73% of attendees have advanced graduate degrees (M Div , D Min , and Ph D ) while 31% have been preaching more than 25 years Solo pastors account for 45% of attendees
• Each year, two participants receive 50% off registration costs for the following year An evaluation is sent to registered participants to garner feedback on how to improve the event, and the two winners are drawn from a pool of those who complete the evaluation
