Titles of songs, books, moviesIf it is circled or has a question mark when you get it back, either I could not read it, or I was unsure what it was. I did not know if it was spelled correctly or if it needed to be capitalized, that is why it will be marked. You must fix all mistakes before you create your final copy.

SELFIE POEM

Poems are stronger and make connections with the reader through word choice. Check each word in your poem so that the word chosen creates the image or mood that the poem needs.

● If you write three different poems, each poem needs to have a different title that is capitalized and punctuated correctly.

● If you write one poem with three stanzas, it must have a title and an extra space between stanzas.

SELFIE POEM Self LoveOnce when I was running,

from all that haunted me,to the dark I was succumbing - to what hurt unbearably.

Searching for the one thing, that would set my sad soul free.

In time I stumbled upon it,an inner calm and peace;and now I am beginning,to see and to believe,in who I am becoming-and all I’ve yet to be.

I BELIEVE

Think about the ideas, the events, the problems, the practices, the behaviors that are happening in America currently. These can be in your own home, your school, your neighborhood, your community, your city, your state, or the country. Once you identify one that you believe should be changed, identify what that problem is. Now, see that problem changed. What does that change look like? Just like Martin Luther King, describe the dream you have for what the world would like like if that problem was fixed.

Page 12: TH GRADE MEMOIR - Moore Public Schools · Final Memoirs on Wednesday, May 20th. 100 THINGS Because this is a list, you can capitalize every word ... Either writing must contain one

I BELIEVEDescribe the dream clearly in the first paragraph:

● what it is● what would the world/community look like instead of

how it is now● how would the change affect others● who/what would be benefited by the change

In the second paragraph, describe how it could actually happen (REALISTICALLY):● what would have to be done - describe from start to

finish● who would do it (everyone is not who) (remember all

people do not feel the same way about things)

THE GIVING TREE

THE GIVING TREE

When you identify the person that is your giving tree, plan the writing by making a list of all his/her traits and the actions that he/she does that is giving to others.

Then, write the first paragraph that describe the person so that your reader (that has never met him/her) would ‘know’ them.

Page 16: TH GRADE MEMOIR - Moore Public Schools · Final Memoirs on Wednesday, May 20th. 100 THINGS Because this is a list, you can capitalize every word ... Either writing must contain one

THE GIVING TREE

The second paragraph should clearly tell of an action or actions that the person does which demonstrates his/her giving nature.

When you are finished writing, count the number of sentences in the paragraphs. Write the total number of sentences in the margin beside each paragraph.

THE GIVING TREE

Exchange papers with the person behind you. The last person in the row takes his/her paper to the person that is first in the row.

Count the number of sentences in the paragraphs. Write the total number of sentences in the margin beside each paragraph. Check every sentence for 7 words or more. If a sentence does not have 7 words or more, underline it in red.

Pass the papers up.

WHAT LIVES UNDER MY BED

If you are writing what is realistically under your bed, get under your bed and see. Make a list of those items (include the dust, trash, old toys, dog bones, etc…). As you write, describe those items so that I can “see” under your bed.

If you are writing fictitiously, use something that is truly under there as a starting point or something that you believed was under your bed when you were younger to write your description.

Either writing must contain one metaphor and one simile that will be highlighted yellow on the rough draft before turning in.

WHAT LIVES UNDER MY BED

Highlight the metaphor and the simile yellow on the rough draft. Check that what the student highlighted is actually a simile and a metaphor. If one is wrong, circle it with red.

Count the number of sentences in the paragraphs. Write the total number of sentences in the margin beside each paragraph with red pen. If the sentence does not have 7 words or more, underline the sentence in red.

Hold onto it and we will pass them forward.
