Self-AwarenessAnunderstandingofhowone’suniqueinterests,talents,andaspirationsplayaroleindecision-makingandinterpersonalrelationships.Individualthoughtsandfeelingsthatgetstudentsexcitedaboutlifeandlearning,andtheabilitytoarticulatepassionsanddreams,includingrecognizingchallengesandpotentialbarrierstoattaininggoals,andhowhealthylifestylescontributetopersonalandprofessionalsuccess.Element3:Studentswilldemonstratepersonalawarenessandsocialmaturitythroughthedevelopmentofpositiverelationshipswithpeers,teachers,andotheradults.Studentscould:

• developapersonal/professionalnetworkofadultmentorsthatshe/hemayaccessforguidanceandsupportwhendevelopingcareerorpostsecondarygoals

• participateinspecificassessmentsthatidentifyunique,individual,leadershipqualities.Thoseleadershipqualitiesmaybedevelopedandenhancedthroughpracticeandself-reflection

CareerAwarenessAnunderstandingofthedifferencebetweenjobs,occupations,andcareersandtheimpactthismighthaveonone’scareersatisfaction.Abilitytoarticulatetheimplicationsofawiderangeoflocalregional,national,andglobalcareerpathwaysandopportunities,whilegivingconsiderationtoeconomic,culturalinfluences,andtheimpactofstereotypesoncareerchoice.Element3:Studentswilldemonstratethenecessarymindsetsandbehaviorsthatsupportanunderstandingofhowthewhole-selfinfluencescareerawareness.Studentscould:

PostsecondaryAspirationsParticipationincareerexplorationactivitiescenteredonstudents’passions,interests,dreams,visionsoftheirfuture-self,andperceivedoptions.Element2:Studentscoulddevelopmentoringrelationshipswithatleastonememberoftheircommunitythatrepresentsajobwithintheiridentifiedcareerpathway.Studentscould:

• makeprofessionalconnectionstocommunitymembersintheircommunity,inordertoobtain“realworld”informationregardingcareersthatexistwithintheircommunitythatsupporttheirchosenpathway

• demonstrateanunderstandingofthebarrierstoaccessthatexistforcertaincareerswithintheirlocalcommunity,andidentifyareasintheirstateorotherstateswhereemploymentopportunityexistsforthecareerfieldinwhichtheyareinterested

PostsecondaryOptionsTheknowledgeandapplicationofavarietyofpostsecondaryandcareeropportunitiesandadvancementsavailablebyusingtoolssuchascareerclusters,personalityassessmentsandlearningstyleinventorieshighlightingindividualstrengthsandcapabilities.Element2:Studentscoulddemonstratetheirknowledgethroughawrittenessayorothercreativework,thevarietyofpostsecondaryopportunitiestheyhaveconsidered(including,2yearand4-yeardegreeprograms,apprenticeships,militaryservice,careerandtechnicalcolleges,andservice-learningprogramssuchasJobCorps)andwhichoption(s)appearstobethemostinlinewiththeircareergoals.Studentscould:

• articulatethedifferencebetweentypesofcolleges,aswellastechnicalandapprenticeshipprograms,andhowthesecollegeandcareerchoicesbestfitthewholeself

• communicatetheinterconnectionsbetweenself-knowledge,self-directedlearningandpostsecondaryopportunities• demonstratetheabilitytonavigateanduseavarietyoftechnologicaltoolsinordertoidentifyandselecttheircareerand

collegeoptions• calculatethecosts,benefits,andchallenges(includingpersonal,social,environmentaland/orfamilyimplications)tomake
