Keeping the Spirit and the Sparkle Alive!

Hello friends, ook around you, talk with any person belonging to any age group, ask him what bothers him the most in this prolifi c city, his response- badly managed traffi c , won’t shock you anymore. In the last two decades, Pune has been expanding at an impressive speed. Demographics, educational and job opportunities, proximity to other cities, are some explicit factors that keep Pune on a fast track.

Sadly, the speed of expansion and the infrastructural development over the last decade don’t match. And that brings us to this chaos. Traffi c issues in the city arise due to two reasons- lack of infrastructure and indiscipline among commuters, drivers and pedestrians.

Improved traffi c management is what the residents of Pune have been demanding for the last few years, citing it to be the real concern.

Pune's inclusion in the Smart City Project has many aspirations attached to it. One of which is to see Pune become 'global urban centre'. To achieve that, we need smoother and effi cient transport system in place. Plentiful vehicles stuck on narrow roads won't ever move in the direction of this aspiration.

Latest news about the traffi c scenario in the city should be considered as a wake up call now. Pune is the fi rst city in the country to have more vehicles than the human population. Documented population stands around 35 lakh while the number of registered vehicles are around 36 lakh!

Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has two bright prospects arched out- Ring road passing from the outskirts of the city and Metro that will shuttle through the interiors. Both have the potential to improve traffi c scene in Pune.

Now we come to the second part of it- indiscipline amongst commuters, drivers and pedestrians. In the fi rst half of this year, 8 lakh traffi c rule violations have been recorded in Pune. Fines amounting to Rs.20 crore have been levied. Cases range from drivers stopping their vehicles on zebra crossing, jumping signals, driving through wrong-side, parking in no-parking zones, etc. There are still many who break the laws and get away with it- unnoticed and unpunished. Driving licences cancellation of frequent violators, harsh punishments, repeated awareness drives, etc. are some possible steps that come to my mind right now.

Pune is only growing by the day, it shouldn’t suffer due to its own citizens. We can contribute by making small changes at the community level- residential spaces should be kept vehicle-free upto a limit, pedestrian walkways must be constructed and used. Safety measures while driving should be adhered to. Mainly we shouldn’t forget, it all starts with us.

04Spirit of Athashri

2. Identify one of the oldest automobile brands in the world that was named after the person who founded ‘The Motor City’ in Michigan, USA.

Visual Quiz

Keeping the Spirit and the Sparkle Alive!

Armed with a new motto — ‘Th ere is no help like self help’ — a few Athashrians are working hard to bring back a secure, supportive, fun and inclusive environment to Athashri, one step at a time. And the results are already showing!

T he very fi rst Athashri came into existence in the year 2002. I am not merely thinking of the Athashri building itself but the total Athashri concept. It really marked the beginning of a new concept for senior citizens who longed to live independently in a secure, supportive, happy and friendly environment. It was about time that retired people loosened the shackles of work and family responsibilities.

In 2004, the second Athashri building was completed. The managers of the two buildings were delegated the task of ‘adding life to years and not years to life’ for all Athashrians. We were provided with the services that gave us a hassle-free lifestyle. And lo and behold! The idea worked wonders for Athashrians. The lifestyle certainly not only added life to our years but in the process, added years to our lives! Practically everyone participated in all the activities that brought enjoyment and happiness to all. Athashrians had the best of both worlds — their family world when it suited them mutually and also an independent world. Those who did not have any blood ties opted for friendship ties which over a period of time have become stronger and thicker than blood.

All good things do come to an end and since 2013 some apathy had started to set in. A number of us, the fi rst Athashrians, started to count how many more years we have to live. From Athashri, they were almost ready to go to Itishri! When we moved in to Athashri, we had estimated that we would have about 20 odd years to enjoy. Now after 15 years or so, and in ours late 70s and 80s, we have begun to wonder how many more years we HAVE to live. A handful of us were still trying to bring the enthusiasm back among the rest by arranging regular programmes but the sparkle seems to have gone.

By 2017, a number of burning issues had overwhelmed the Athashrians. Practically every month one or another friend was bidding goodbye to the world. Some were heading towards dementia. The number of

24-hour attendants was increasing month by month. More and more friends had begun to rely on walkers or wheelchairs. No more grabbing a rickshaw to visit a theatre. No more picnics. No more regular visits to restaurants. Only a handful of us were still enjoying the trappings of the good life. A sort of reclusiveness seemed to be the answer for some people.

To add to the woes, a number of fl ats have been rented out to tenants who come to Athashri in a frail condition. They expect the benefi ts of an old peoples’

home rather than a retirement home. Of course, no one has yet defi ned the two separate establishments. We were advised by knowledgeable people that, when renting the fl ats, we cannot set any overt rules as to the age group and health condition of a tenant. So we are legally and morally bound to welcome all. This is not to suggest that all tenants are inactive members of Athashri. Some of them fully participate in all our activities and have become as much a part of our community as any owner.

Keeping the Spirit ...(Continued from page 4)

There is no doubt that Athashri was designed to cater to senior citizens. How ‘senior’ and at what stage of physical and/or mental health was not a consideration in the early stages. I am not sure if this is an aspect now being considered when opening new Athashris. In countries abroad, there are defi nite conditions regarding who can buy a retirement fl at. When a person shows signs of total dependency on support staff or shows signs of dementia, their relatives are asked to move her/him to an old people’s home, care home or nursing home. At Athashri, the facilities and the amenities including the staffi ng, is designed to cater to elderly people who can live happily with some help. That ‘some’ help has also never been defi ned. For some frail Athashrians, the fi nances available are insuffi cient. As a consequence, the existing limited staff has taken on a lot more responsibility, beyond their brief. HATS OFF TO THEM! They often looked harassed and tired but they rarely complain.

In 2018, some of us came together and decided to turn this situation around. After struggling for some answers on how to create an all-inclusive lifestyle, we

started certain activities. These include: 1. We set up open forums or townhall

meetings, once every month, where all issues and concerns can be discussed openly with an emphasis on solutions rather than complaints.

2. The new President of the Condominium started monthly meetings on certain designated days as a follow-up to monthly Condominium meetings, and all residents were welcome to attend these meetings. The idea is to create an atmosphere of transparency and inclusiveness.

3. As a result of these meetings, we started activities which could be enjoyed by people using walkers, wheelchairs, etc. We started drawing and painting classes and were overwhelmed by the response from Athashrians. In the process of learning how to draw or use water colours, we also have a friendly laugh at each others’ ‘masterpieces’.

4. With the help of staff from the Sancheti Healthcare Academy, Dance Movement Therapy classes were started and are thoroughly enjoyed by a number of us.

5. Once a week, people attend a

lecture on the philosophy of the Dyaneshwari. The event is run by a resident who is an expert on the subject.

6. We have also started Tai Chi classes, which is a gentle form of exercise for all age groups. So far I am not sure if we have actually mastered any moves but I am certain our memories are getting sharper when we try to remember what moves we were taught in the previous lesson. We have great fun — all 35 of us!

7. We are planning to start a group activity where two or three participants will discuss a recent thought-provoking article, give their own views and if appropriate we write these views to the newspapers or magazines in which the article appeared.

8. We have been inviting a group of people to showcase some holiday resorts which are senior citizen friendly. The organisers have assured us that the accommodations are wheelchair friendly too. If appropriate, we intend to arrange one or two annual outings and intend to ensure that we have a qualifi ed and experienced doctor and a couple of helpers with us.

9. As more and more people are getting Athashri bound, we intend to increase the frequency of indoor activities such as game of Housie, card tournaments, scrabble, etc.

10. We have undertaken a survey of all staffers, including the security staff, to ascertain if they are meeting the ever-increasing and complex needs of the aging population in Athashri. A comprehensive report has been submitted to the Condominium Board with recommendations. These reviews were made to ensure mutual benefi t. As a consequence, we have set up a group of volunteers who will make regular rounds to check the cleanliness in our surroundings and take necessary action. We have taken small steps to

make our lives and our helpers’ lives comfortable. Already some enthusiasm is noticeable in Athashri. A number of volunteers are working to bring Athashri back to its former glory and state of happiness. The body may be slowly disintegrating but the spirit is very much alive. There is no help like self help and this will be our motto.

IWhen Actions Speak Volumes

John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address as the 35th President of the USA inspired children and adults to see the importance of civic action and public service. Here are excerpts of the speech that he delivered on January 20, 1961.

John F. Kennedy’s words of inspiration

Peeking into the history

N ow the trumpet summons us again--not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need--not as a call to battle,

though embattled we are-- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"--a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself. Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility--I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it--and the glow from that fi re can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifi ce which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the fi nal judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

n 2005, during his famous commencement speech at Stanford University, Steve Jobs, the Co-founder and former Chairman of Apple Inc. concluded his 15-minute crisp yet inspiring message by appealing to all fresh graduates to “Stay hungry. Stay Foolish” all their lives and pursue their true passion.

The video of the speech is available on TED.com under the title ‘How to live before you die’ in which Jobs talks about his unique success story by highlighting three lessons in three stories that helped him build megabrands like Apple and Pixar, and also live his life. We’re all unique in our own ways, the only difference is some of us have fi gured out what to do with our lives, and some of us are still

struggling to do so. But it really doesn’t matter which category you fall in right now as long as you’re making a sincere attempt to discover your

Change your Mind, Change your Life!

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, provides practical and more powerful ways in which you can change the way that you think, view past events, and approach your life. NLP shows you how to take control of your mind, and therefore your life.

The Origins of NLP NLP was co-created by Richard Bandler, who noticed that conventional psychotherapy techniques didn’t always work and so he was interested in trying different ways. He worked closely with Virginia Satir who was a very successful therapist and NLP was born from the techniques that really worked.

Taking Control of Your MindNLP works from the starting point /principle that you may not control much in your life, but that you can always take control of what goes on in your head. NLP shows you how you can take control of these beliefs and infl uences. Using mind techniques such as visualisation, you can change the way that you think and feel about past events, fears and even phobias.

The Power of BeliefWhat you believe can be extremely powerful. If

you believe you’re ill and that you’re going to die, you probably will: ‘witch doctors’ have been using this technique for centuries. Likewise, if you believe that you have been given something that will make you better, you often do get better. This ‘placebo effect’ is well-documented in clinical trials.

Setting GoalsWe’re all familiar with the principles of goal-setting, but NLP suggests some interesting new insights, focusing on satisfaction, not dissatisfaction. For example, it’s helpful to make your goals positive; focus on what you want to have, not what you’d like to lose or not have. You should also think about what it is that you really want.

Some NLP Tools and Techniques There are many tools and techniques used in NLP and this section gives a brief introduction to a few.

Moving imagesImagine an image of someone who annoys you.

Concentrate on how the picture appears in your mind.

Make the image smaller, put it in black and white, and imagine it moving away from you. Notice how this makes you feel.

Imagine a picture of something that makes you feel good. Make it bigger and brighter, and move it closer to you. Notice how this makes you feel. The idea behind this thought-process is that it

helps you see how people or events affect you and understand the way you feel about them.

By manipulating images in this way, you are teaching your brain to magnify good feelings and make bad feelings weaker.

Undermining the Critical VoiceMany of us will admit to having a critical voice in

our heads that pops up at inopportune moments and says things like ‘You couldn’t possibly do that’, or ‘That sounds way too diffi cult for someone like you’. Next time you hear the critical voice, imagine it sounding silly, maybe like Donald Duck or Tweety Pie. Notice how this changes the way that you regard the voice’s ‘wisdom’.

Running the Movie BackwardsStart from a point in time where you realised

the experience was over. Then imagine the whole incident happening backwards, until you’ve gone back to a time before it happened.

Do this a few times until you’re familiar with the way that the ‘fi lm’ plays backwards.

Now make it really small in your mind — say little enough to view on a mobile phone screen — and play it again backwards.

Finally, think of a different end to the experience, one that makes you smile. Notice how the way you feel about it has changed. The key to this technique is that you are showing

your brain a different way of looking at a memory, which will change the way you feel about it too.

‘Brilliance Squared’Take an emotion that you would like to feel, for

example, confi dence. Step into the square, and take on the mantle of

the imaginary ‘you’. Feel that feeling spreading through you. Repeat this a few times, until you can do it easily.

Now, imagine the coloured square on its own, right in front of you and step in. See how it feels. The ‘trick’ here is that you have trained your mind

to associate an image with a feeling. By conjuring up the image, you can now conjure up the feeling too.

In Conclusion...NLP is a very powerful technique based on the power of your own mind. Some might call it ‘mind tricks’ but by using these techniques and others developed by NLP practitioners, you can learn to take control of your mind and how you respond to the world. Remember, you may not be able to control the world, but you can control how you react to it.

08Think Positive

Visual Quiz 4. Identify this super luxury car maker flashing the iconic trident logo representing the strength and vigour of Neptune.

recently witnessed a contest called Mrs India. It was an amazing experience for all girls, yes girls, all almost above the age of 35, confi dently walking the ramp, making eye contact with the judges...

These were women who wanted to explore the world and create an identity of their own. They were so excited that they wanted to answer not only the questions put to them but also those put to others! All brimming with confi dence and joy and all of them were beautiful!

I wondered how the judges were going to select winners from among them, what was the criteria? And how would the other participants take the rejection? Would they go into a depression and lose their confi dence or would they accept it? And accept what? That according to some ‘XYZ’ some of them didn’t fi t the criteria? Say some were rejected because they weren’t confi dent enough; would that encourage them to boost their confi dence or would it go down further? And this could affect both — the ones selected and the ones rejected. The girls who get selected may have their own struggles.

A friend of mine had won such a title a while ago. Now she puts in a rigorous effort to look good, stay fi t, and maintain her beauty. She’s constantly taking selfi es and changes her DP daily or even twice a day. She’s looking in the mirror all the time and has a 24x7 struggle to maintain an image in front of others.

Why do we need the approval of an outsider or need to be or look a certain way to gain acceptance from others? Girls, let’s tell ourselves: We are not the titles we receive, we are not the profession we’re in, then why live that role 24x7? Tell yourself this — you are beyond that and you are beautiful! Someone’s smile is contagious,

someone’s eyes have a twinkle and somebody handles the maid beautifully. The qualities in you are beautiful! Your immortal soul is beautiful! Accept that some things are bound to change with time. Accept that nobody is perfect and that it is perfectly alright to be imperfect.

Unconditional self-acceptance leads to self-love which boosts self-confi dence. Accept yourself with all your shortcomings and fl aws. As rightly pointed out by RuPaul, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

Let us have more self-compassion and self-love because such people also have greater social connectedness, emotional intelligence, happiness, and overall life satisfaction. Self-compassion has also been shown to correlate with less anxiety, depression, shame, and fear of failure.

Develop a self-compassion mantra and play it on repeat: May I learn to accept myself as I am

May I forgive myself

May I be strong May I be patient This works well too:

1. Acknowledge the things that you don’t like about yourself and take a positive step towards improvement.

2. Allow yourself to commit mistakes, to fail, to experiment and understand that all people experience pain.

our kitchen is the heart of your home. It messes up quickly and cleaning it is an endless task. It is stressful walking into a kitchen full of dirty dishes and shoddy counter tops. It gets even messier during monsoons, when the moisture level rises. The answer to keeping your kitchen fresh is to do an all-over cleaning job once a week. Then, all week long, stay on top of your kitchen's cleanliness using the clean-as-you-go method.

Start major cleaning bouts with a symbolic lighting of a candle.

Turn on your favourite music. Fast music will help you work faster.

Set a timer to give yourself a deadline and a break.

Always set the timer for your breaks end so you don't stray.

Pre-soak any dishes with stuck-on food.

If your dishwasher is full, race against a timer to empty it. It should take a mere fi ve minutes or less to empty.

When emptying the dishwasher, choose a handful of dishes all going in the same direction.

Do a basketball pivot between the dishwasher and cupboard as you put them away.

After clearing counters and reloading the dishwasher, soak

the counters with soapy water to break down stuck-on food.

Use a metal food scraper, available in any superstore, to scrap stuck-on food from the counters.

Wash and dry the counters. Soak the stovetop with soapy

water and go back later to wipe it.

Hand wash large metal trays and put them in the oven to dry.

Scrub sinks with steel wool and dry them. Use wipes to clean appliances. Put tools away.

Turn off the radio. Blow out candle. Relax. A dean kitchen is bound to put you into a good mood. Maintaining a level of order will keep you in a good mood. Maintaining a level of order will keep you in good mood. Stay vigilant. You will be glad.

route was Delhi-Amsterdam-New York-Paris-Delhi. A different crew would bring the Prime Minister and his entourage to Amsterdam, and we were supposed to take over from there and be the fl ight crew till the end. Our crew would be positioned at Amsterdam via London. With this in view, we got ready for the fl ight which was to commence on September 23 and complete on September 30, 1998, with a fi ve-day stay in New York and a three-day stay in Paris. While positioned at Amsterdam, I met Jaswant Singh, a BJP stalwart and one of the very high-level dignitaries in the PM’s entourage (I knew him because of our National Defence Academy background and we had met on an earlier VVIP fl ight)

New York-Paris-DelhiThe fl ight out of Amsterdam was pleasant,

however after landing at JFK airport we were told that as the airport was for civilian use only, the airport authority could not provide our Jumbo any security. And instead, we were asked to fl y the aircraft to the Andrews Air Force base near Washington D.C., where the US’ Air Force One is based too. And that’s how, we the fl ying crew, were in Washington and the PM’s entourage were in New York! This was not an offi cial visit to the US—Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to the US on his fi rst offi cial visit as the Prime Minister of India only in 2001. On our return fl ight, we were supposed to land in Paris so that our PM could meet all the top French leaders who had supported our action at Pokhran. So, at the end of our PM’s visit to the United Nations, we were positioned at JFK airport again and we set course for Paris on the evening

of September 27, arriving in Paris on 28th morning. The French government provided a red-carpet welcome to our PM. He was given a Guard of Honor at the Orly Airport on arrival.

On the second day, our PM met the French President, Prime Minister and other offi cials. The next day, he had no offi cial engagements and some of us wondered why we were staying the extra day there. It was only later that we came to know that on that very day, our PM had met with Naga underground rebel leaders and had signed a peace treaty with them, one which held till last year. The Paris-Delhi sector was a very eventful one! Jaswant Singh took me to meet our PM and I had a good chat with him!

Back HomeMeeting all the top leaders of the world and

interacting with them seemed to have given him a boost of confi dence because after getting home from this trip, the PM and the government started taking very strong measures in tackling tough situations. Those are always very good signs for a nation!

However, this was not taken well by the opposition parties and a lot of political wrangling took place. The opposition got very vocal resulting in a big debate in the Parliament. A ‘No Confi dence’ motion was tabled in the House against the PM, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s NDA Government was brought down by ONE SINGLE vote!

The Vajpayee Government resigned immediately. The Kargil War took place soon after this and Vajpayee’s caretaker government led us to a victory in that war. The nation’s pride was intact! Thereafter the Lok Sabha elections were held and in 1999, the new NDA government took the oath of offi ce to serve the nation for a full term of fi ve years.

It makes me very happy to share this memory of my fl ight with our former PM and the signifi cant events that followed thereafter. This I feel, was a key milestone in the nation’s history. I am sure you will all agree with me.

n India, there are only three offi cial VVIPs (Very, Very Important Person). They are—the President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister. My fi rst VVIP fl ight was in 1983 when we fl ew Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on a Boeing 707, and the last one I fl ew was with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in September 1998 on the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet.

On my fi rst VVIP fl ight, we fl ew Mrs. Gandhi back to India after her visit to the USA and UK in August 1983. Operation Blue Star took place in June 1984 and she was later assassinated by her guards in October 1984. I felt very sad about that. Here, I would like to share my last VVIP fl ight with you in more detail. There are two reasons for that—fi rstly and more importantly, this fl ight has an intensely historical background which had implications on the future political scenario of our country; and secondly, because I admire our former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee very much. The 20th anniversary of that fl ight is coming up shortly.

Amsterdam to New York After coming to power in 1998, the

NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government took a very bold decision to carry out nuclear and thermonuclear explosions at Pokhran on May 11 and 13, 1998. With this background, our PM was visiting the US, not on their invitation but to address the UN General Assembly in New York. He must have wanted to explain India’s position on the nuclear tests at the United Nations gathering. This would be the fi rst time that he would be interacting with many heads of states at a world forum.

One day in September 1998, I was called by our Operations Department and told that I would be one of the pilots on a VVIP fl ight taking our PM to the US and bringing him back to India. The

S imon continued, “I have always been at sea ever since. Usually, every contract by the company is of 11 months duration. I send home all the money I earn, and I only keep suffi cient money to pay for my beer and other expenses. I always request the company to permit me to continue as long as possible. I go home for about a month and then I am back on a vessel and back to my work at sea.”

“This tenure you are on board this ship for over two and a half years!” I said and asked, “Don’t you want to go home?”

“You see Chief, eight years ago we bought a house on the outskirts of Manila. So there are the monthly instalments for the house, my son’s school fees, home expenses and other expenses. Infl ation is so high! Every year, the expenses just keep rising!”

“But surely your wife must also be working in the Philippines.” I said.“Yes. She works at a supermarket in Manila. But the household

expenses are always so high that even two incomes are barely enough to make both ends meet. Besides, you know my salary is not all that

great,” replied Simon. “After being at sea for so many years, I do not wish to continue this lonely life away from family and friends. I have never been home to celebrate anyone’s birthdays or other family occasions. Under the circumstances, I am helpless. At this juncture, I have to continue to work every single day.”

“Two years ago when I was at sea, I lost my dear Papa and last year I lost my Mamma. On both the occasions, I could not go home to attend to their funeral. You see, the ship was en route to Chile far away at sea. It would take the ship another

15 days to reach the nearest port in Chile. By then it was all over. The company offered to relieve me at both times. But I refused to leave my job and go home because if I went home, who knows when I would be sent out on my next contract. Nowadays, there are a lot of seamen and Bosuns available, and they are ready to join at very short notice,” he stated in a very heavy and sad tone.

“A seaman is nothing but a money-making machine for the family,” He went on. “All family members have their own routine, and are immersed in their own jobs, studies and have their friends. When you are away from home for a long time, they learn to live without you. One fi ne day, when you suddenly land up home after a long gap, they are very happy to see you. But this does not last long. After about a month they feel that you are unnecessarily coming in their way... in the way of their freedom. That is when they start to ask when you will be going back to

the ship. Besides, the wife feels that you are wasting time at home when you should be at sea, earning dollars. This is a fact of life. The family only wants the monthly cheque from the seaman and nothing else.”

He fi nished his beer can and opening another one, he added, “Besides, if I do not get a job, then who will pay for the monthly expenses of the family? Moreover, I am afraid that if I stay at home for too long, my wife might lose her temper and pull the gun on me again and if she has perfected her aim, she might not miss the target this time!”

A month later when the ship reached Japan, the company had sent a reliever for Simon. He left the ship very reluctantly and with a very heavy heart.

Three days later our ship completed discharging the entire cargo and was headed once again for Chile.

En route to Chile, about four days later, I received an email from Simon. It simply read “Chief, when I came home the house was locked. My neighbour was surprised to see me. He said that about two years ago, my wife sold our house and she is now living in Manila with her boyfriend. My son has taken up a job in Manila and lives in an apartment by himself. The neighbour does not have their addresses or contact details as both of them have not been seen here ever since the house was sold. Now, I do not have the energy to go around the town to locate them. From now onwards it is only me and my beer!”

I was very shocked to read this communication from Simon and felt very sad for him. But his email had a very deep impact on me. The next day, in the morning, I went up to the ship’s Captain and requested him to send a message to the company to send my reliever in the next port!

How to Play KenKen?

Fill the grid with digits so as not to repeat a digit in any row or column, and so the digits within each heavily outlined box or boxes (called a cage) will produce the target number shown in that cage by using the operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) shown by the symbol after the numeral.

For example, the notation 6+ means that the numerals in the cage should add up to 6 and the notation 48x means that by multiplying the numbers in the cage you will get 48. A 4x4 grid will use the digits 1-4, a 5x5 grid will use 1-5, a 6x6 grid will use 1-6, and so on.

For single box cages, simply enter the number that is shown in the corner.
