SCHOOL NEWS

No.9 15th May 2020

Covid-19 and

Rathdowney SS

Last week, the Queensland government decided that

schools would re-open this week to children of essen-tial workers and vulnerable children as well as all Prep and Year 1 children in pri-mary school (and years 11 and 12 at high school). If

all goes well and only a few new Covid cases are rec-orded in the state in the next two weeks, all state

schools should reopen for

all students on 25 May. All students in Years 2 to 6 (and Years 7-10 at high school) will continue on

with learning at home until then. This means that

home learning packs will be available as usual, for

pick-up for children in Year 2 and above on Mondays, from 8-9am and drop off

for marking from 8-9am on Fridays.

Please phone the school if you are worried or unsure of the work the children

are supposed to do.

Back at School

At school, we are doing the

same work that students

who are learning from home have been given to do. You might notice sub-tle changes in the planning for each week. This is to

maintain the school curric-ulum as much as we can and to help with student well-being while they are

away from school.

This week we have had more children coming to

school as more of our par-ents return to work. This week we have had 17 stu-

dents at school. In Ms Lane’s class we have 10

students currently attend-ing. There will be even

more students at school the week after next week with all state school stu-

dents anticipated to return to school from Monday, 25

May.

Year 3-6 Class

At school in Ms v B’s class, we have again been bea-vering away happily. With Will, Linden, Harlow, Sissy, Hooti, Max and Montana

at school, the classroom is filling up and lots of work is being done. The students are missing their friends

though, as would the stu-dents learning from home,

I imagine.

Ms Sugi, our Japanese teacher, and Mr Kroll, our Science, HPE and technol-ogy teacher have now re-

turned to their original cir-cuits, working at our school

on Wednesdays and Fri-days, and Wednesdays and

Thursdays respectively. Mrs Brown, our guidance officer was back also last week. Ms B, our music

teacher, has been attend-ing our school as usual on Wednesdays throughout the Learning from Home

period.

The students all play hap-pily at break times and find

different activities to do each day. Yesterday they

took great interest in watching the builders pour the concrete for the new

base for the rainwater tanks at the back of the

tuckshop.

Block C Refurbish-ments

The builders have been

busy in the classrooms up-stairs and excavators have been busy with the plumb-

ing and drainage work downstairs. Last weekend

the tall tank stand and tank near the toilet block was removed. It has not been

used in many years and be-cause construction work

needed to be done in this area it was removed. The

old tank stand and tank near the staff room will also be removed in the

next week or so.

This week the footings and reinforcing steel had been laid ready for concreting,

which was done yesterday. Today and tomorrow the wall sheeting is going up.

The windows are being in-stalled on Monday. Yes-

terday, we were visited by the project manager, the

architects and the Depart-ment of Education’s, Barb Kropp and Glenn Zimmerle to see how the work was

progressing. We have been told that the work should all be completed

ahead of time, in the next

3 weeks! We were in-formed yesterday that any, and all, remaining asbestos in Block C has now been re-

moved.

As a bonus, we were told that the toilet block would also be painted to match

the rest of the school.

Our school should look fan-tastic after the next few

weeks!

Bouquet for

Rathdowney SS

Every year for the past few years, our school has par-ticipated in an RSL project

to send Christmas cards to Australian servicemen and women serving overseas. This week we received a

letter from a defence force serviceman who had re-

ceived some of our Christ-mas cards last Christmas

and wanted to thank us for them. Please read his let-ter attached to the news-

letter.

Staff on Leave

Ms v B will be taking long service leave for the last 3 weeks on this term. Kasey will be acting principal in her absence and Ms v B’s

class will be taught by Mrs O.

Junior News

This week we have wel-comed back a few more students. All of students were very excited to be

back at school, playing with their friends and continu-ing on with their learning.

We have been so busy with all of our school work. We have even started our test-ing for the end of the term.

In English, we have contin-ued on with our c2c per-

suasive unit. This week we explored advertisements and how they are used to persuade us to buy some-thing or go somewhere. We looked at some ads

and sang some of the jin-gles and identified why

they are used in ads. We soon realised that some ads are more effective

than others.

In Maths, the Preps have been learning the number 12 and the different ways

we can represent that number. They have also

been doing simple subtrac-tion and exploring halves.

The Year 1s have been looking at odd and even

numbers and number pat-terns. The Year 2s have

been adding and subtract-ing using number lines and

linking addition and sub-traction.

In Geography, the Preps have finished their unit for the semester so they have

begun their testing. The Year 1s and 2s have been

learning about connections to people and places that

are far away. We have also explored ‘country’ and

‘place’ and the importance of it to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander

people.

More from us next week. Kasey, Cathy, Denise
