Sebastopol Center for the Arts is a dynamic community arts organization, committed to cultivating creativity and inspiration. For over 30 years, SCA has been a destination for artists and arts enthusiasts—our award-winning programs provide ways to experience and explore
culture through diverse forms of creative expression.
We are committed to cultivating a vibrant, accessible, and world class art community in West County. Our Open Studios programs celebrate the unique creative energy of our local artists, and together we create an inclusive art experience.
Art at the Source is celebrating 25 years! Five of this year’s artists have been participating from the beginning, and since its inception hundreds of artists have participated. In 2019, we feature 109 local artists who will engage with you in studios and workspaces throughout West County. Each artist has welcomed the opportunity to showcase their work and make direct connections to diverse audiences.
During both weekends, participating artists will welcome the public into their homes and workspaces. They’ll share their artwork and processes, and invite conversations with you, so that you can learn more about how they arrive at their finished work, and what moves them to create. This is a very special time and something to be treasured.
Please come out and celebrate ART and the artist spaces. It’s a great opportunity to get a “behind the scenes” view of how and where an artist works, and it’s free to attend. I wish you happy journeys and rich inspiration, as you explore the possibilities of ART!

A s we enter our 25th year, the Art at the Source community takes time to reflect on where we’ve been, and to look ahead to a bright future for our artists and art lovers alike.
Art at the Source grew out of the desire of West County artists for more opportunities to engage with the public and share their work. Some had participated in the county-sponsored Art Trails program in October, and a handful of artists north of Sebastopol started a small spring open studio in their neighborhood. Others quickly wanted to join them. They made the case to Sebastopol Center for the Arts for a spring program in West County, and Art at the Source was born.
In 1995 the first Art at the Source Open Studio launched with 45 artists participating—of those, five are still active in the program, and one other who joined in 1996 has never missed a year! We took a few minutes to speak with Frank Schueler, Sally Baker, Yvonne Giambrone-Martin, Amy Smith, Susandra Spicer, and John Chambers about how Art at the Source started, and what it has meant to them over the years.
Their common theme is sharing—with each other and with visitors who come to see their work, “at the Source.” Says Chambers, a ceramics artist who joined in 1996, “We get face-to-face contact with people who are interested in our art—that’s the best way to do it!” Sculptor Spicer loves talking with visitors about her process, saying “When they take the work home, I hope they enjoy it more, having met the person who made it.” Smith, a fiber artist, appreciates the chance to show people what goes into making hats—a “simple” item we take for granted: “What I do is so esoteric, it’s eye-opening for them to see the process.” For Baker,
interacting with visitors is a contrast to working in isolation. “I paint what speaks to me, in a way that I can’t ignore. I’m not really painting for an audience, so opening my studio gives me a chance to talk about the work I do, answer questions, and get feedback.”
Art at the Source artists share with each other as well, in a variety of ways. From the beginning, artists have contributed time to make the program successful for all—Smith recalls the early days when the signs team would paint the familiar yellow signs and lay them out in the sun to dry. Most artists are still involved in catalog production and distribution, planning, mentoring, and exhibit preparation. Giambrone-Martin, a jeweler and craftsman who exhibits with Chambers in his Blucher Valley Road studio, appreciates the synergy between her work and his. She believes shared studios bring visitors and artists together who might not otherwise find each other.
Emerging artists also benefit from interaction with more seasoned exhibitors. Schueler, who was a Board member at the Center at the program’s inception, strongly believes in supporting emerging artists to exhibit at a professional level. He has long been a mentor to artists in the program, and all our originating artists agree that it’s important to share this legacy with new and emerging artists in West County—helping them to grow in their businesses as well as in their creative work.
Our first catalog was a single fold-out sheet, with the now-familiar map and photo directory of artists. Today you hold not just a catalog, but a tradition that has opened up our West County home to artists and their visitors, to inspire, be inspired, and deepen their enjoyment of community and creativity.
