6.1 GBOBA Chairman's Report
Ladies and gentlemen, again welcome to our association's Annual General Meeting and the
Commissioning Day Dinner that follows, a very special welcome for those that have travelled from
afar including Old Salts who have travelled exceptional distances to join us today.
Also a special mention of the two reunion groups, 1979 and 1969, joining us today, their contribution
to the association is valued, particularly in tracing AWOL members.
The past year under review has been active for the association which is indicative to your committee
that The Legend Lives On. This is also due to the hard work put in by the various committee
members of your bursary fund. A separate executive summary report of the fund follows shortly.
Suffice to say at this point a Bravo Zulu to the fund's chairman, Keith Burchell, and all the other
members involved.
Membership, the life blood of the association; membership presently stands at 845 ex cadets;
regrettably 19 less than reported last year. This decline is a result of two primary factors, (a) the
passing of members and, (b) members going AWOL. We make every effort to maintain contact and
visit members on sick parade. But those going AWOL are a strain on the resources of the association
in trying to locate and establish contact again. Thus I again appeal to members to inform us of any
changes in contact details to ease the burden on the writer.
On the plus side of the membership balance sheet we have recruited a few post Bothie members to
our ranks, two of whom have joined us here today, Loyiso Jantjies and Nkazimlo Mtshixa. Both have
recently graduated from college Sea Safety Training Group with their Officer of the Watch
qualification, much the same as us graduating from the Bothie. In addition we have Tsoso Hanong in
Durban who completed his SAMSA Oral Examination last year. I hasten to assure members that their
membership meets our constitution criterion.
Our social events continue regularly with monthly lunch meetings both in Cape Town and Durban,
and similarly events worldwide including our Garden Route, Britain and Australia. In fact those in
Australia are so widely spread over that vast continent that they host events both on the west and east
coasts. The Cape Town monthly lunch hosts on a quarterly basis a guest speaker on subjects of
maritime interest jointly with the Society of Master Mariners. Last year I reported the end of an era;
the discontinuation of the Southern Lunch in Simon's Town. Subsequently a willing volunteer, Fred
Marais, stepped forward and resurrected the event in time for the scheduled quarter. Although the
primary aim was to gather those locals in the "deep south" other members travel across the country to
attend. Such is the spirit of the Bothie.
We continue to invite, as guests, our widows to the December lunch and our Senior Old Salts, with
their wife or a family member, to the Commissioning Day Dinner. Although many are unable to
accept the invitation for various reasons, most respond with their thanks and appreciation for being
remembered, and perhaps I may add, for being honoured. I remind members that sponsorship for
these overheads are welcome, some received for today for which we are grateful.
I continued to represent the Association at the Gunners Memorial Service; some names on our
cenotaph were in the army, and the ssMendi Memorial Service. In fact I have been questioned why
3
we do not lay a wreath at either of these two services, perhaps the members can share their views on
this later in the meeting, particularly the ss Mendi service.
I, often supported by other members, represent the Association at various other events. All reported
on our Face Book group and in our quarterly newsletters.
The Association again awarded a prize of binoculars to a deserving grade 12 student of Lawhill
Maritime Centre. Last year the winner was Helena Seebran who also won other prestigious awards
from Simon’s Town School as well as Lawhill Maritime Centre.
Molly Townsend, a retired artist living at the St James Retirement Hotel, donated a painting of a
naval cenotaph in the old cemetery above the naval dockyard as well as an autographed book of her
paintings of False Bay and surrounds. The Association in turn made the two items available for
auction at the Big Bottle Wine Party. The proceeds of the party, including the auction, go towards the
maintenance of Lawhill Maritime Centre's yacht Homero and students travelling to Spain, or
elsewhere, on an educational and sailing experience.
Further documents of the Association have been delivered to the Western Cape Archive and Records
Service for safe keeping and facilitating future researchers.
Under the helm orders of the GB Trust Chairman Kieron Cox the Trust has achieved its objectives as
mandated by this meeting last year. Although its chairman shall table his interesting report suffice for
me to place on record that the Trust's remaining financial asset has been transferred to the Association
or, in terms of our South African law; donated. The use of this, and other financial assets held by the
Association, is under consideration and discussion by your committee.
A highlight of the past year was the publication of Ian Manning's book; Gentlemen - The Ship! A
well-documented history of our original ship itself, from design to Royal Navy service, to our training
ship and its eventual demise; Bravo Zulu to Ian Manning for his contribution to preserving our
Legend.
The treasurer's report shall show the Association to be on even keel, with thanks to our treasurer
Bruce van der Meulen. Old Boys Dave Murray and Glen Kasner of African Marine Solutions provide
logistic support for the Memorial Service from their hard pressed budget. In addition another
member, who prefers to remain anonymous, provides substantial financial support to the Memorial
Service. We are indebted to them all; a vote of appreciation to them. Thus it is the members' Honour
and Duty to support and attend the service. I expect to see you all there tomorrow.
Although the Association is presently on sound financial footing I remind members that your
committee is planning for the future of the Association. The Association is run on donations and as
our profile ages it is expected that donations shall incrementally decrease, thus the need to provide
future financial security of the Association.
In closing my appreciation to the committee members for their unwavering support; certain topics at
times bring heated debate at the meetings, it is a healthy and encouraging debate. Bravo Zulu to you
all.

A member supported the Committee for the action it has taken to provide for continuation of the
Association as regards membership. The Chairman replied that the Constitution drawn up some time
prior to this Committee makes provision for the present policy.

8 GBOBA Treasurer’s Report
In the absence of the Treasurer, the Chairman explained the financial statements (in section 8.1) for
the 2018 financial year to the meeting.
He drew attention to the following:
• Interest of R70 295 on the three year investment was received on its maturity in 2018.
• Events such as the Commissioning Day Dinner are not priced to make a profit.
• As noted in the Chairman’s report of the General Botha Trust, its financial assets (R99 555.94)
were transferred to GBOBA Cape Town Branch and are included under Donations in the Income
Account below.
8.1 ACCOUNTANT’S REPORT
31 DECEMBER 2018
REPORT OF THE ACCOUNTANT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SATS GENERAL
BOTHA OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION, CAPE TOWN BRANCH
I have examined the books and accounts of the SATS General Botha Old Boys Association, Cape
Town branch for the year ended 31st December 2018 in accordance with normal accounting practice.
Due to the nature of the activities of the Association, it has not been possible to verify receipts prior
to their entry into the books of account. I have no reason to suspect that these have not been correctly
recorded.
Subject to the above and the notes on page 4, I have satisfied myself as to the correctness of the books
of account and the income and expenditure account and balance sheet attached hereto, and initialed
by me, which have been prepared from these books. I have verified the existences of the assets listed
in the balance sheet and am satisfied that the income and expenditure account and balance sheet are a
true and fair reflection of the activities of the Association for the year ended 31 December 2018 and
its financial position as at that date.

8.1.1 Financial matters arising:
The Chairman and Vice Chairman responded to questions from the floor regarding income:
Membership fees: The Committee had decided not to implement membership fees as it was
considered that its administration would outweigh the benefit.
Donations: Instead of fees, donations from individuals are welcome and an appeal for funds in 2017
had an excellent response.
Mark-up on events such as the Commissioning Day Dinner: It was suggested that instead of pricing
events to break even, younger members, in particular, could afford to pay more. Personal phone calls
can be made to invite those who we know cannot afford it. Dennis Henwood, nevertheless, felt that
higher prices would put members off. The Chairman described the existing situation where Senior
Old Salts are invited as guests to the Commissioning Day Dinner and widows of members are invited
to the end of year function. In advertising the events, members experiencing financial constraints are
encouraged to contact the Committee.

9 The General Botha Trust
9.1 Trust Chairman’s Report:
It has been a busy year.
All the assets of the GB Trust have been disposed of in terms of the Deed of Trust.
As reported last year, all assets at the SA Navy Museum had already been donated to that Museum at
the time.
The Committee had dealings with the Iziko Museum and donated one model that had been on
permanent loan to them and reclaimed another model (that had been in storage) and this was donated
to Sea Safety Training Group.
Most of the items at CPUT were donated to Maritime Studies at that Institution with the exception of
some sextants (in storage), a model that was not on display and a compass binnacle. These items
were donated to Sea Safety Training Group as well and all items are on display at their premises.
The artefacts at SA Naval College were formally handed over to the Commanding Officer, Naval
College and two plaques were posted (one above the anchor and the other at the gangway) to keep the
Legend alive. Strong links were forged with Naval College and the SA Navy during this process.
A painting of the Light house at Granger Bay was returned to the family that donated it.
All the financial assets (just under R100 000) were transferred to the GBOBA, part of which is ear-
marked for future projects.
An additional Roll of Honour Board was initiated by Captain Ian Manning acknowledging two cadets
who died in Wars subsequent to the World War 2 Roll of Honour Memorial Board. This will be
unveiled tomorrow and put on display at the SA Navy Museum.
8
The Master of the High Court noted the resolution to terminate of Trust and placed this on record
(27th February, 2019). We can clear the final process with the South African Revenue Service.

Acceptance of report proposed by: D Henwood
Seconded by: H James
9.1.1 Trust matters arising:
Dennis Henwood said that the Association can be proud of the Trust committee and what they have
achieved. He suggested that members of the Trust be welcome to attend and participate in meetings
of CT Branch concerning the legacy of the Association.
10 Bursary Fund
10.1 Bursary Fund Report
In the absence of the Chairman of the Bursary Fund, Tony Nicholas reported on the activities of the
Fund with a series of photographs that depicted mentoring, training activities such as camps, and
ship visits. Special mention was made of the trip that a small group of bursars had to Spain and the
September camp with NSRI instructors.
Meeting the costs of the bursars at the Lawhill Maritime Centre and, in 2019, 2 students at tertiary
institution requires a budget of R2 million per year. The Fund requires reserves to cover the entire 3
year course of a student at LMC. Included in the foregoing budget are the training activities for
which the support of SAIMI (South African International Maritime Institute) is much appreciated.
The budget submitted to them for 2019 awaits approval.
It was noted that the Fund was originally funded by donations from individuals but today, in
addition, relies on corporate support as well as fund-raisers such as the Annual Golf Day and Big
Bottle Wine Party.
Tony Nicholas on behalf
Chairman Keith Burchell
Acceptance of report proposed by: Peter Coetzee
Seconded by: Neil Mouton
10.1.1 Bursary Fund matters arising:
It was asked from the floor whether maritime companies are showing an interest in the Fund. The
Chairman replied that the shipping industry is experiencing shrinking income and this has affected
support. The Fund is trusting that the industry will recover.
It was noted that the two bursars who completed the Officer of the Watch training course in 2018
will be joining ships shortly, one with Grindrod and the other with MACS.
11 New Business and other matters arising:
11.1 Koos Louw extended congratulations on implementation of decisions discussed and taken at the
previous AGM to prepare for the future with regard to the Trust – and its assets - and to membership
(the two most recent new members Loyiso Jantjies and Mtshixa Nkazimlo being present at the
AGM). He also thanked the Association for its involvement with T.S. Woltemade Sea Cadet Base
and involvement of individual members with Izivunguvungu in Simon’s Town. He challenged
members to become involved in other parts of the country.
11.2 Brian Ingpen noted that Norman Caseley, the last of the cadets who had served on the barque
Lawhill, passed away in 2018.
He paid tribute to Bursary Fund and its members for their amazing support of the Lawhill Maritime
Centre and named a long list of individual members who contributed in a number of ways during
2018.
9
12 Election of GBOBA Committee for the Year 2019-2020
The Chairman asked for nominations for the Committee noting that the Committee has a mandate to
co-opt additional members during the year.
Tom Fraser noted that, with modern technology, committee members can participate from anywhere
in the world. Also, that the Association could have a central committee having as its primary
membership the chairpersons of the local branches.
Tom Fraser was nominated and elected together with the existing committee who were re-elected.
There were no new nominations for the office bearers who were also re-elected.
The Committee and office bearers for 2019-20: A. Nicholas, Chairman D. Henwood, Vice-Chairman/Newsletter Scribe
