Fetal Monitoring and Risk Reduction Strategies – Update 2009 Instructors: Denise G. Palmer, MS, RN, CNS Becky L. Gams, RN, MS, CNP On completion of this program, the participant should be able to: 1. Define and describe fetal heart rate baseline, variability, accelerations, decelerations and tachysystole using the 2008 NICHD workshop proceedings. 2. Review the definitions of Category I, II, and III fetal heart rates patterns and discuss implications for clinical practice. 3. Describe factors related to fetal oxygenation and state implications for clinical practice 4. Identify 3 risk reduction strategies related Obstetrical Practice based on NICHD definitions 5. Discuss the pharmokinetics of oxytocin and effect of both endogenous and exogenous oxytocin. 6. Discuss the impact of tachysystole and oxytocin administration on fetal oxygenation 7. A Concurrent Session Schedule, based on your registration form selections, will be in the packet you receive during conference registration at Breezy Point Resort. Register early to ensure placement in the sessions of your first choice. Confirmation of registration is NOT mailed, but you may contact Bonnie Hansen, MPO Coordinator at 320-597-4405 or email [email protected] with questions or concerns. All registrations must be accompanied by a check payable to MPO and postmarked on or before September 18, 2009. You may also register on our website www.minnesotaperinatal.org by September 18, 2009. A refund, minus a $30 processing charge, will be given if notification of cancellation is received on or before September 18, 2009. Cancellations after September 18, 2009 and no-shows will not be refunded. If a registered person cannot attend, a substitute is welcome. You may register at the conference, but there will be a late fee of $20 in addition to the usual registration fee. *To encourage “teams” of attendees from institutions or organizations, MPO is offering a $10 discount for each member of a “team” that registers together. The team must consist of at least 5 members and all team members’ registration forms must be received together. A block of rooms has been reserved at Breezy Point Resort. Room rates are $89.00 plus tax per room, for up to two people per night. More than two people per night may result in additional charges; please confirm rates with hotel upon registration. This block of rooms will be held only until Monday, August 24, 2009 so make your reservations prior to that date. Breezy Point Resort will take reservations via phone at 800-432-3777 (be sure to identify yourself as a participant in the Minnesota Perinatal Organization). Guest room check in is guaranteed by 5:00pm – rooms may be available earlier, check with hotel staff to confirm; check out is 12:00 noon. Conference meeting rooms are often cool. We recommend you bring a sweater or light jacket for your comfort. In an emergency, participants can be reached during conference hours by dialing 218-562-7146 and asking for the MPO Conference Coordinator. Calls made after meeting hours must be made to your room. Breezy Point Resort provides complimentary voicemail for each room.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This program is designed to provide state-of-the-art information on obstetric and newborn care practices, and is of particular importance and value to obstetric and newborn care nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, family physicians, physician assistants, obstetricians, pediatricians, and allied perinatal health care professionals. After attending the conference, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the process to implement individual and population-based systems of care that are irrespective of the consumer’s race, age, culture and outcomes-based research.

2. Discuss the design plans of inpatient and outpatient care for implementation by designated healthcare professionals, which address the unique nutritional, developmental, psychosocial, nursing and medical needs of mothers and infants.

3. Develop personal goals that will promote a positive outlook on their role as an essential member of the perinatal healthcare team.

Successful completion of this activity requires that participants turn in all evaluation materials for attended sessions.

PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS AND DISCLOSURE

POLICY

Content considerations and the selection of speakers are the responsibilities of the Planning Committee and Conference Coordinator. Speakers will disclose to attendees the nature of any significant financial relationships they have with the commercial firms providing financial support as well as the manufacturers of products and/or the providers of services discussed in their presentations. They will also disclose if any pharmaceuticals or medical procedures and devices mentioned in their presentations are investigational or unapproved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CONTACT HOUR INFORMATION

Nurses: This three-day activity has been designed to meet the MN Board of Nursing continuing education requirements for up to 18.08 contact hours. Physicians: This activity is being reviewed for Prescribed credit hours by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Final credit numbers to be provided on site.

REMINDERS

Only registered conference attendees are eligible to attend conference sessions, meals and activities. In consideration of conference participants, we ask that children not attend any conference sessions or activities. While we sympathize with last minute schedule changes, conference attendees bringing children will be asked to leave and will be refunded their conference registration fee minus a $30 processing fee.
