10th Anniversary Healthway Leadership Development

2013

Postcard 2003 Ana Gowrea 2002-2005 - Senior Program Officer, Nutrition and Physical Activity Branch, DoH WA

2010- Present - Principal Policy Officer (Nutrition), Department of Health WA

Currently on extended maternity leave and living it up in Singapore

Change attributable to the leadership program:

Life expanded both professionally and personally in the years that followed. Married the boy, got inspired by amazing individuals and projects at work and as a DAA Director, grew and nurtured child and maternal nutrition policy in WA, expanded my horizons in child health policy, and had a baby. The leadership program provided the impetus and the tools. It helped clarify my vision for myself. I learned to act on my convictions as well as be bold in seeking out and playing with opportunities, people and experiences that are inspiring. Life got simple and fun after that.

2009-2013 Self-Employed, Adaptive Projects: Coaching & consulting for the social sector

The program was the beginning of a journey from heroic ideas of leadership to now running my own programs based on this notion of leadership: “It means being gentle and generous with the self and remembering that the doing of good in the world, the act of exercising leadership, is both a difficult and passionate endeavour. Exercising leadership requires you to be alive in the world, to practice the art of failure, to forgive yourself for not succeeding and to allow uncertainty, that is, hope and possibility to sit in your life. All require both confidence and humility. This aliveness is a choice to be fully conscious and present in life”.

Postcard 2003 Nicole Spencer (nee Peel) 2002 Strategic Development Officer, Eastern Goldfields Div of General Practice

Policy Officer, Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Canberra

Since 2006 in the infrastructure and transport portfolio .. heading the Strategic Regional Policy, running the Aviation Security Screening Review Taskforce.

Following a promotion to the Senior Executive Service (2010) ... managing the Supply Chain & Screening branch in the Office of Transport Security, undertaking an administrative review of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act, and now running the Policy Development Unit for the Infrastructure portfolio.

There are three particular aspects of the leadership program that I continue to use in my day to day work:

Recognising that peoples’ minds work very differently and an important aspect of leadership is knowing the tools

that work personally well for you and those around you – the program endorsed for me the importance of ‘mindmapping’ difficult problems. I have used this with my various staff for many years to the point that staff who

know me well know to get out the whiteboard marker to start working through complex systems issues.

Managerial linking Sharing information with appropriate individuals is now part of my everyday consideration,

which is important when you’re in large bureaucracies that can easily entrench silos. I really have worked in all of my roles since the program to break down the silos that would otherwise result in my own work being unsuccessful.

The importance of experiential learning. I have discovered since moving away from health promotion that the

core concepts are so essential to many other aspects of life and designing good policy responses to other complex community issues – an airport for example is not dissimilar to a hospital, trying to change behaviour in road safety

or energy efficiency is not dissimilar to health promotion.

Lastly, being a Mum and having a partner with Type 1 diabetes. Having a good grasp of nutrition, purely through

my contact with colleagues in the program who were nutritionists has set me up well for life.

2008 Awarded a Healthway Health Promotion Research Fellowship and became a mum...again.

2009 Commenced Fellowship position at Curtin University, School of Public Health Currently still in this position and in the last year of the Fellowship. A change that came about as a result of the leadership program was the decision to commence my PhD. I was successful in obtaining a highly competitive NHMRC scholarship to do this in the area of alcohol and breastfeeding. In 2009 the NHMRC reviewed their ‘Australian Alcohol guidelines’ and I was able to advocate, based on my research, for the inclusion of an alcohol guideline specific to breastfeeding women.
