    with our physician assistant

It was September, 1961,and seven young ladiesshowed up for their rst dayof class at Whitney HighSchool. They were young, brash and hoping to set theworld on re in marketingand retailing, cosmetologyand business.

Each of them had theirown stories, quirks anddreams and graduation dayfound them leaving on dif-ferent paths. A few gotmarried early, had childrenimmediately and lost touchwith the others.

While no longer in dayto day contact, there wasthat occasional Christmascard sending current newsor a casual run-in while ata restaurant or mall. When

that happened it seemed asif no time had passed andfunny anecdotes and fondmemories surfaced.

It was 30 years laterwhen a group met to dis-cuss plans for an upcomingclass reunion that a freshconnection was made. Fiveof the seven were on thecommittee and at the festiv-ities the seven reunited andmade a decision that friend-ship worked best when nur-tured. Since some were nowdivorced and most of thechildren were grown therewas nothing to stop them

from setting aside time topursue the frivolity theyonce shared in school asfriends.

Plans were made forthe rst of 20 trips andyearly celebrations. Nowyearly birthday celebrationsare looked forward to notfor the age but the cama-raderie. There were mar-riages, deaths, new grand-babies and through it allthe kinship of friends. Afterall, who else knows yourstrengths, weaknesses andis still there for you throughthe years?

I belong to this groupwhich has laughed, criedand survived our share oflife. We took our annualvacation this year to PuertoVallarta, Mexico, but things

have changed; one of thegroup is battling stage-fourcancer and another foundout about breast cancer afterthe trip.

But this is not what issupposed to happen. Asfriends we often laughedabout all of us living in theretirement home where wewould assign tasks accord-ing to our strengths. Deathshould not be an optionamong friends; but that isoften not the case.

Our vacation this yearcould not have been more

perfect. The weather, foodand accommodations wereextraordinary. We ate fartoo much, shopped till wedropped and laughed as wealways do; often at some-ones expense. We learnedall about time-share sales-men and spent a wonder-ful afternoon getting mas-sages on the beach. Thefriendship connection wasso evident and this trip willcertainly rank as one of ourbest.

We do not know whatnext year will bring but arehoping for the best. That

is what friends do. Nomatter what happens theyare there front and centercheering you on or helpingyou through a rough patch.I know I treasure my six

Whitney sisters and hope tofor years to come.

At the holiday seasonwe often forget to take thetime to thank our friendsfor their years of undyinglove and devotion. A rela-tionship must be nurturedto be strong so set asidesome time to visit, take amoment to phone or plana special lunch or dinnerwith your friends. Make aresolution for 2011 that youwill contact those specialpeople that you once trea-sured but no longer see orhear from. Friendships arepowerful so make it a prior-ity in your life to give thegift of friendship; the giftthat keeps on giving.
