ity. Now I had something veryimportant to doto care foranother human being. Up untilthat time, the only thing I had todo was survive and do my duty. And thats when I learned therst lesson was that we makethe choices. The Vietnamesecould take every freedom that

we enjoyed, but they could nottake away our freedom to choosehow we were going to react.itis a terribly liberating idea.

The soldiers passed the daysin their cells, warned not to tryto communicate with each other.Halyburton told of the tappingsystem they developed to breakthrough that isolation, calling itthe prisoners lifeblood. Weused it not just for military pur-poses, but to build a commu-nity, a family. We tapped to eachother, trying to gure out the bestway to deal with our situation. We swapped information aboutour families, and we tried to tella joke every day to keep our

morale up. We also torturedeach other by talking aboutfood. We ate our prison mealsin the dark, not knowing whathad touched it rst, or what wascrawling on it, so the talk aboutfood was especially important.Thinking about wonderful mealsgave us something creative to dowhile we lay in the dark.

The Vietnamese intensiedtheir punishment for those whobroke the rules about commu-nicating, torturing offenders fortwo weeks and two days, fol-lowed by handcuffs behind theback, legs in leg irons in a foxhole with a cover on it, for 60days. Halyburton said now that

he learned the value of commu-nication as well as the importanceof having a sense of humor. Oursituation was so grim sometimesthat we had to laugh at it. Thelaughter helped us through thevery bad times.

The prisoners witnessedexamples of leadership andcharacter as some risked theirlives to get food and minimalmedical care to their colleagues. They encouraged each other tobe physically active, and workedtogether (via the tapping sys-tem) to teach other academicsubjects. Halyburton himselflearned enough German to passa rst level placement test when

he applied to graduate schoolafter his release, noting, It wasimportant for us to be as physi-cally, emotionally, academically, and spiritually active as pos-sible.

The most valuable lessonHalyburton cited was the needfor forgiveness. He told of theprisoners last few days in pris-on, as they waited to be released. He said that most of the pris-oners were talking about howthey would spend their rst fewdays of freedom, and he wasntsurprised to hear them talk aboutseeing family, having hot show-ers, enjoying home cooked food. But he heard a couple of prison-

ers talk about how they could getrevenge on the Vietnamese. Hecouldnt believe that they wereallowing the hatred they felt todictate how they would live therest of their lives.

He said, I decided then thatthis experience had dictatedenough of my life, and that itwould have no effect on myfuture. When I walked throughthe gate toward the bus, I turnedto the prison building and said, Iforgive you. I left my anger andhatred at the gate. He added,Forgiveness is a wonderfulthing, and hate is a poison thatonly hurts the hater.

    Halyburton closed his talk by

reading a poem he had writtenwhile in captivity, and then toldus of how the prisoners wouldsay good night to each other. Wedid it every night. We tapped outthe letters GBU that stood forGod bless you, he explained. Then he tapped out the messageon the podium, using the systemhe and his fellow prisoners hadused so many years ago. Godbless you all, he told the audi-ence, and thank you.

I wished my son and his col-leagues in Afghanistan couldhear that message. I hopedsomebody there was remindingthem of the big men (like PorterHalyburton) who had fought in

the U.S. Armed Forces beforethem and set such a good exam-ple of courage and leadership.
