Early Saturday, Sept. 11, the Sylvania Northview Band and Orchestra held their annu-al tag day fundraiser.

The fundraiser is arranged by the Booster Organization. The event began at 9 a.m. at the Northview cafeteria where students were bro-ken up into groups of three to six with a parent leader.

Members of the band and orchestra walk around neighborhoods in the Sylvania City and Township asking for donations. As a privi-lege, the seniors get to visit local area busi-nesses asking for dona-

tions. The 38 senior members went to Nautica Coffee, Mayberry Diner, Connections Credit Union, Kaz Bakery, and several others.

From 9 a.m. to noon the band and orchestra collected over $7,000 and they would like to thank the Sylvania community for their very generous donations.

“This year’s Tag Day was a tremendous suc-cess and a lot of fun,” said Viktor Barricklow, band president. “Thank you to all of those who helped to donate. The money will go towards various instrument and music expenses.”

Megan Kathleen Barclay and Robert Andrew Fausz were united in marriage May 7, 2010, in the beautiful Ault Park Rose Garden in Cincinnati, OH. The bride’s uncle, Wally Martinson, performed the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Barclay of Greenhills, OH. The groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Glenn Fausz of Sylvania. Presented in marriage by her parents, the bride was attended by her twin sister, Melissa Barclay, as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Rebecca Barclay, sister of the bride, and Adrian Soli and Katie Pierce, sisters of the groom. Cara and Ella Soli, nieces of the groom, were the flower girls.

Matt Inkrott, the groom’s fraternity brother, was best man. Groomsmen were Ben Devine, friend of the groom, and Jon Soli and Scott Pierce, brothers-in-law of the groom. Ring-bearers were Hayden and Griffin Horter, cousins of the bride. The reception was held in the Ault Park Pavillion, adjacent to the garden. The couple honeymooned in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Megan is a 2003 graduate of Winton Woods High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of Cincinnati where

she received a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership. She is currently working as an administrative assistant.

Rob is a 2004 graduate of Sylvania Southview High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of Cincinnati where he received a bachelor’s degree in architecture. He is currently attending Miami University of Oxford’s graduate program for architecture. They reside in Oxford, OH.

OBITUARYCathryn Comstock Coventry

of Sylvania, Ohio passed away peacefully at Sunset Village Residence on Friday, Sept. 24 of natural causes. Born Sept. 11, 1915 in Sylvania, she had just turned 95. Cathryn graduated from Burnham High School in 1932. Following graduation, she attended Ohio State University as a freshman, then transferred to Ohio Wesleyan University—graduating in 1936 with a major in Business Administration and a minor in German.

Following college, she enrolled at the Business Institute in Detroit, then went on to teach there, and was even-tually promoted to department head. While working there she met and later married Donald Coventry. After living briefly in Michigan, they moved back to Sylvania, where they raised their four children in the house Cathryn grew up in on Monroe Street, which has since suc-cumbed to commercial develop-ment. What remains of the old homestead is the former barn, remnants of which are now Comstock Furniture, the busi-ness long owned (as Comstock and Coventry Furniture) by her and her brother Carl and her husband Don. She was the bookkeeper for the business that has endured to the present time.

Cathryn (Kate to many) was considered the matriarch of the family, having survived her brother Carl Comstock, her hus-band Donald Coventry and all of his five siblings and their spous-es, and many old friends. She was an avid keeper of the family history. She spent countless hours typing and transcribing family ancestor diaries dating

back to the early 1800’s, which she later donated to Bowling Green State University for their regional historical content.

Cathryn also enjoyed playing bridge, reading and being part of a book club, watching tennis, and baking mouthwatering pies remembered by all her family. She also loved to travel and vis-ited several countries during her later years through Elder Hostel trips. For many years she was historian for the United Church of Christ in Sylvania, where she was baptized and remained a lifelong member.

Cathryn is survived by sons Phil (Maria) of Decatur, GA

and Rick (Norma) of Bowling Green, OH; daughters Carol (Jack) Reise of Portsmouth, RI, and Linda Coventry (Warren Winders) of Abington, MA. She also leaves her eight grand-children: Tanya Strader, Erika Guerrero, Angela Vidinsky, Andrea and Allison Coventry, Rich, Debbie and Dana Devoe; eight great grandchildren, sister-in-law Carol Comstock, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald in 1980.

A memorial service for Cathryn was held on Thursday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie Street, Sylvania, OH 43560. Visitation preceded the service at 10:00 a.m. Friends who wish to make donations in honor of Cathryn are asked to consider the Sylvania United Church of Christ or the American Macular Degeneration Foundation: www.macular.org. (American Macular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515).

There’s a little bit of drama in all of us. Even stuffy old histori-ans can shake loose and be creative! So when members of Sylvania Area Historical Society (SAHS) put on a cos-tume, they absolutely become the character they portray.

SAHS has performed five historical reenact-ments in the past, and another is fast approach-ing. The costumed inter-preters bring history to life by sharing the sto-ries of fascinating people who made colorful con-tributions to Sylvania’s olden times. Guests in attendance always com-ment how interesting it is to actually ‘meet’ the person from the past, as if they were whisked back in time.

Well, now YOU can see how fun history can be! Flower Hospital is hosting a community cel-ebration “A Century of Changing Lives” as they reach their 100th year. Come to the barn on the grounds of the hospital on Harroun Road, on Sunday October 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. They offer walking tours, refresh-ments, health screenings and more.

Members of SAHS will perform the his-torical reenactments, portraying key people from the hospital’s 100 years. A 1920s nurse in her old fashioned dress, with cape, sensible shoes and cap, will remind us of what nursing was like back then. Clarissa Dodge Harroun, who had lived with her fam-ily in the house and barn on the grounds where Flower built their hospi-tal, will share her story. Travel back to the days when women wore full fabric dresses, complete

with boning, tiny but-tons and prim lace col-lars. Even Mr. Stevens Warren Flower will be in attendance! He is the namesake who willed the first funds to build the hospital.

These characters and more will tell their story that afternoon. Whether they put on their waist-coat and spats, netting hat and peplum, or cotton stockings with garters, for those few hours, these actors become the people of Flower Hospital’s past. Come share in the fun!

Now here’s something different: You can help raise money for SAHS when you search or shop online. It’s a search engine and online shop-ping mall where a por-tion of each purchase is donated to the cause. It is totally free with no hidden fees, and you won’t get spammed. Go to www.igive.com/SAHS to register. Then book-mark the site, and every search you perform will raise a penny for your city’s historical soci-ety…a painless way to contribute!

Plus, over 700 online stores participate, and up to 26% of each pur-chase you make is donat-ed. Your first purchase through this site will automatically donate $5.00 to SAHS, at no cost to you. An amaz-ingly easy way to support Sylvania!

So go register at www.igive.com/SAHS to let the easy fundraising begin, and then I’ll see you at Flower Hospital on 10-10-10!

A play and an opportunity

Thinking about

yesterday By Sheila Painter

The Week Ahead: October 10 through October 16, 2010

Aries (March 21-April 19)This week don’t let your free

spirit to drift into your finances. Money issues will surface as small expenses start adding up. Avoid going crazy by starting to save now. Those things you wanted to splurge on will have to wait a little longer.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)You’re great at plotting your

next move, but give it a rest this week. Stop worrying about whether things are going to work out or not. Now is the time to release your expectations and allow everything to fall into place for you. If not, you may have a tough time.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)You’re constantly shifting

between emotions and logic, going from one extreme to the other. Stop and realize that you need both. Allow your emotional self to bal-ance with your logical self and life will feel a whole lot better and be divinely guided.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)Family members might be get-

ting on your nerves, but don’t lose your temper. Be patient and listen to what everyone has to say. Then respond calmly and if you don’t agree simply forgive and forget. Remember your ideas are not the only ones out there.

Leo (July 23-August 22)This week will fly by quickly,

but make sure you’re not overlook-ing the details. You don’t want to miss anything important. If that little voice in your head draws your attention to something, listen to yourself and obey.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Lately, you’ve been helping everyone take care of their projects and problems. Now it’s your turn to get some assistance and some much needed rest too. So, this week pamper yourself a bit. Take a long

bath or curl up on the couch and take a nap. You deserve it.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Your issues with past relation-ships are legitimate, but it’s time to let go of those old attachments. Focusing to much of your attention on them prevents you from moving forward and experiencing life right now. Stop wallowing and don’t waste another minute.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Lately, you’ve been getting the urge to do some major travel-ing. When the opportunity presents itself, go for it. Your restlessness is serves a purpose so don’t talk yourself out of going on an adven-ture. Doors will open and you will manifest other opportunities.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

You’ve been worried about money for too long. Exercise com-mon sense about financial issues and this will dramatically help bring things back into balance. And remember that the best things in life are free, so soak up all the love and good energy around you.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

For several weeks, you have been getting signs that there’s a new romance coming your way or things will heat up in your current love life. Be patient and catch your breath while you can. Things are falling into place and what’s com-ing will take your by surprise.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Old friendships or romantic relationships may return. Although you may be hesitant, don’t worry. There may be unfinished business and life lessons that need to play out. Let things happen naturally. You may enjoy the outcome more than you expected.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

With all the emotional ups and downs this week, you may feel like you are riding a roller coaster. Although we all enjoy emotional highs, keep things in perspective because the lows are bound to return at some point. Stay positive and you will get through them fine.

Flower Hospital is celebrat-ing a “Century of Changing Lives” on October 10, 2010. The hospital was founded in 1910 in Toledo to provide a community based hospital with a broad range of compre-hensive healthcare services. The hospital purchased land in Sylvania, built a new hos-pital and moved to Sylvania in 1975. We are so glad they did, and congratulate them on their century of service and health care.

Flower Hospital is an asset to the Sylvania community, providing outstanding health-care services to our residents. Flower Hospital is also the largest employer in Sylvania, providing thousands of jobs to Sylvania and area residents. Further, Flower Hospital also draws many visitors to our community, seeking the excellent healthcare available on their campus.

The Flower Hospital cam-pus itself is a beautiful part of our community. Starting with new facilities in 1975, the hospital has developed around an ever evolving and forward thinking master plan. The vistas provided to the com-munity, as well as the tallest water column fountain in the region, are truly spectacular.

The campus is also grow-

ing and thriving. Recent improvements include the expansion of its Emergency Center, development of inpa-tient psychiatric services and Flower Rehabilitation Center, the addition of outpatient services for cardiac and pul-monary rehabilitation, the construction of a new medi-cal office building, and the establishment of the Hickman Cancer Center, a regional leader in cancer care.

The City of Sylvania con-gratulates Flower Hospital on its 100th anniversary, and on the many excellent programs and services it provides to our residents. My best wishes to ProMedica Health Systems, Flower Hospital president Alan Sattler and the thousands of professionals working every day on the Flower Hospital campus to improve our health and quality of life. Well done and congratulations!
