Holliday Herald Writer Summer is the perfect time for class reunions, and members of the Class of 1970 at St. Ursula planned their 40th reunion for late July. But, in addition to the casual get-togethers, they added a fun twist to their weekend of events. Under the direction of Peggy Schoen Gruber, the SUA alumnae planned a “hop,” (the 1970s term for a dance), and invited their counterparts from local Catholic high schools Notre Dame Academy, Central, St. John’s Jesuit, Cardinal Stritch and St. Francis de Sales. Nearly 150 came to dance to the “groovy tunes” of the 1960s and 1970s in the SUA gym, and enjoy food and drink and lots of getting reac- quainted with their high school, and, in many cases, grade school friends. Gruber explained the idea for a “joint” reunion, saying, “We had such a great class. We all had friends in other schools, and many of us have kept in touch through the years. We just decided to invite everyone. As the reserva- tions came in, it was espe- cially fun to see how many of our classmates mar- ried guys from the other Catholic schools. Many of the husbands came, too, so it was like a double treat!” The flyer for the hop promised, “No chaper- ones, no curfews, no let- ter sweaters, and no wall flowers,” but those in attendance recalled the fun they had at those dances of their youth even with those restrictions. More than one guest was overheard talking about the chaperones in the late 1960s reminding dancing students to “leave room for their guardian angels.” Others recalled how boys would line up on one wall and girls on the opposite wall, waiting for somebody to “break the ice” and ask someone to dance. “It was so much fun seeing all the people we used to see all the time,” noted Donna Chezek Posluszny (SUA ’70), who was part of the committees planning the SUA reunion. “Wherever you walked in the gym that night, we heard people recalling sto- ries from more than 40 years ago, since many of us had attended the same grade schools, too. It was amazing that so many peo- ple held on to the same memories for so long.” Notre Dame Academy alumna and Sylvania residents Carol Comes Lindsley and her hus- band Tom (SFS ’68) saw plenty of former class- mates, and could be heard talking about the dances they attended while in high school. Carol said, “The music tonight was perfect—all the songs we loved in high school. But this time, lots of people were dancing—myself included. I danced until my feet hurt; something I never did in high school!” Blessed Sacrament School and St. Francis de Sales High School alumni Mark Sullivan, who lives in Sylvania, and Joe Kelleher, who came to the reunion from Connecticut, dis- cussed planning a similar event for their 45th grade school reunion, acknowl- edging that they weren’t surprised that friendships had lasted so long. “We played football and basketball with and against each other, and managed to stay in touch through friends and sometimes, our kids,” Sullivan said. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the appear- ance of “The Supremes,” four members of several classes who presented their version of “Stop in the Name of Love” and other favorites. The DJ from Soundwave Mobil Sound provided wigs and costumes for the four, who performed in the center of a circle formed by their friends and classmates. The lights in the gym at St. Ursula Academy had been put on “low” for the dance, just as they would have been for a hop 40 years ago. But even in the low light, classmates and friends found that forty years had not dimmed their excitement for the music of their adolescence or the company of their friends. Christine Holliday is a proud member of the Class of 1970 of Notre Dame Academy. Sylvania residents Connie Knight Carroll from St. Ursula Academy and Carol Comes Lindsley from Notre Dame Academy get reacquainted at the SUA hop. Several schools were represented at the SUA hop. (L-R): Liz Witt Goodwin (NDA) and her husband Bill, Carol Comes Lindsley (NDA), Laurie Wolff Rader (SUA), Judy Hanna Brown (SUA), Tom Lindsley (SFS) and JaMarie Pfaff (NDA). The Goodwins received a prize for coming the longest distance to the reunion; they came from an island off Honduras. St. Ursula alumnae and friends reunite at “Hop” Four members of the reunion classes present their rendition of a Motown hit. They prefer to remain anonymous to minimize embarrassment to their children. Christine A. Summer is the perfect time for class reunions, and members of the Class of 1970 at St. Nearly 150 came to dance to the “groovy

tunes” of the 1960s and 1970s in the SUA gym, and enjoy food and drink and lots of getting reac-quainted with their high school, and, in many cases, grade school friends.

Gruber explained the idea for a “joint” reunion, saying, “We had such a great class. We all had friends in other schools, and many of us have kept in touch through the years. We just decided to invite everyone. As the reserva-tions came in, it was espe-cially fun to see how many of our classmates mar-ried guys from the other Catholic schools. Many of the husbands came, too, so it was like a double treat!”

The flyer for the hop

promised, “No chaper-ones, no curfews, no let-ter sweaters, and no wall flowers,” but those in attendance recalled the fun they had at those dances of their youth even with those restrictions.

More than one guest was overheard talking about the chaperones in the late 1960s reminding dancing students to “leave room for their guardian angels.” Others recalled how boys would line up on one wall and girls on the opposite wall, waiting for somebody to “break the ice” and ask someone to dance.

“It was so much fun

seeing all the people we used to see all the time,” noted Donna Chezek Posluszny (SUA ’70), who was part of the committees planning the SUA reunion. “Wherever you walked in the gym that night, we heard people recalling sto-ries from more than 40 years ago, since many of us had attended the same grade schools, too. It was amazing that so many peo-ple held on to the same memories for so long.”

Notre Dame Academy alumna and Sylvania residents Carol Comes Lindsley and her hus-band Tom (SFS ’68) saw plenty of former class-mates, and could be heard talking about the dances they attended while in high school. Carol said, “The music tonight was perfect—all the songs we loved in high school. But this time, lots of people were dancing—myself included. I danced until my feet hurt; something I never did in high school!”

Blessed Sacrament School and St. Francis de Sales High School alumni Mark Sullivan, who lives in Sylvania, and Joe Kelleher, who came to the reunion from Connecticut, dis-cussed planning a similar event for their 45th grade

school reunion, acknowl-edging that they weren’t surprised that friendships had lasted so long.

“We played football and basketball with and against each other, and managed to stay in touch through friends and sometimes, our kids,” Sullivan said.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the appear-ance of “The Supremes,” four members of several classes who presented their version of “Stop in the Name of Love” and other favorites. The DJ from Soundwave Mobil Sound provided wigs and

costumes for the four, who performed in the center of a circle formed by their friends and classmates.

The lights in the gym at St. Ursula Academy had been put on “low” for the dance, just as they would have been for a hop 40 years ago. But even in the low light, classmates and friends found that forty years had not dimmed their excitement for the music of their adolescence or the company of their friends.

The moment my patient knows I care.

There are moments when life is taken out of our hands and

placed in someone else’s.

Rachelle is a nurse in Mercy St. Anne’s Intensive Care Unit.

In her more than 30 years of nursing, her favorite moments

are when patients come to know how much she cares.

Patients like 89-year-old Hazel, who liked having the curtain

open to see what was going on, especially when the

“handsome doctors” walked by. So Rachelle made sure

Hazel never missed a thing.

These are the moments you know you’re in expert, caring hands.

The moments of Mercy.

By Maggie RoweHerald Alumna

On Saturday, August 7, a Sylvania resident lost his life. That Sylvania resident was my father, Robert Timothy Rowe Sr.

To most reading this, you’ve never heard of him and he made absolutely no difference in your life. I am hoping by writing this though, his memory will live on and will teach us all to be the person that he was.

My dad was one one of those people that didn’t say much, but when he did say something it was worth listen-ing to because it would either make you laugh until you hurt or because it was unbelievably wise.

However, my dad instilled in me values that I hope to share with the world. These are some of them.

To begin with, my dad often told me, “It doesn’t matter what you do as a profession when you’re older. It doesn’t mat-ter about your title or even how much money you make (so long as it pays the bills!). What matters when it comes to a job is that you wake up each morning and WANT to go to work.” I will never have a job where I don’t follow my dad’s advice.

Secondly, as my father, he was always concerned with who I was dating. He never directly told me who I could and couldn’t date and always let me make my own decision. The thing that my dad was most concerned about was not settling. He met my mom when he was 23 and she was 18. He first took her out on a Thursday and by the end of that weekend, they were discussing marriage. One year later to the date they met, they were married. Thirty-one years later, my dad and

my mom were still happy and true soulmates. You’ll know if they’re the one, if there’s ever a doubt, then don’t settle.

My dad earned every sin-gle bit of success that he had. Never once was an opportunity handed to him. He taught us that if we wanted something in life that we were going to have to work for it. A good hard day’s work meant more to my dad than a lot of things. You can’t wait around for handouts, you have to put your hands to work. However, it was a must in my dad’s life to take time away from work and go on vacation. He never once worked on his birthday and even if it was just a weekend trip to Northern Michigan, get-ting away and recharging your-self was important.

On a less serious note, my dad knew what good food was. He never wanted my mom nor I

to ever worry about our weight. As long you’re healthy in gen-eral, then go ahead and eat those fat fries or suck down that milkshake he used to say. The number on the scale doesn’t reflect who you truly are. So stop overreacting that you gained a few pounds and realize that beauty truly is from within.

Finally, my dad taught us the value of family. Family meant

the world to my dad. Whether it was my mother, brother, and I, or his sister and in-laws that loved him like no other, to his work family, to his snowmobile family or to the perfect strang-ers that turned into family, fam-ily was valued over anything. If

everything in the whole world is going wrong and nothing else seems right, if you have your family beside you, you’ll make it through somehow.

So, I challenge every single one of you to start living a life that would make my dad proud.

We all know that nobody’s life is perfect. We all have faults and we all make mistakes. However, let’s try and sim-plify our lives. Turn off our cell phones and our laptops and the television and remember to just live.

Robert Rowe with his daughter, Maggie Rowe.

A tribute to my dad

For the 17th year, 20 eager and very dedicated Junior High School kids added color to our land-scape by planting over 10,000 plants. They also enhanced our parks, and all the while learned a lot.

Twenty two locations were improved throughout our community including several school signs, City

Hall, the Court House, the Library, Pacesetter Park, Olander Park, Harroun Park, River Centre Park and many more very visu-al locations.

They are kids in the green shirts who you have seen about town working so hard, enthusiastically improving the ambiance in our City of Sylvania again this year.

Dale Kretz, a former cad-die from Sylvania Country Club in Sylvania, was se-lected as the Evans Scholars 2010 Scholar of the Year at the Foundations annual Summer Outing on July 19. Scholar of the Year is one of the top honors in the Evans Scholars Program.

Kretz, who is from Water-ville, OH, graduated from Mi-ami University in May with a 3.96 GPA and degrees in history and political science. While in school, he earned four perfect 4.0 semesters and received several top Ev-ans Scholar academic awards, including the Carleton Blunt Scholarship Award and the National Committee Academ-ic Achievement Award. At his Evans Scholars Chapter, Kretz served as chapter presi-

dent. He earned the Adelor J. Petit New Scholar of the Year Award and has twice received, by Chapter vote, the highest Scholar rating in the House. In 2008, he studied abroad in

Florence, Italy, and in 2009, he was selected Scholar of the Year by the Toledo Golf Hall of Fame. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. in political science at Washington University in St. Louis.

In a recent letter to mem-bers at Sylvania Country Club, Kretz wrote: “This Pro-gram has made everything in my academic career possible. The lessons I have learned, the friendships I have made, the person I have become: it is the greatest understatement conceivable to say that this scholarship has changed my life.”

“Dale Kretz has shown outstanding leadership in the classroom, at the Scholarship House and on his university campus,” said WGA President and CEO John Kaczkowski.

Evans Scholars are caddies who have earned a full, four-year tuition and housing grant based on their strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need and outstand-ing character. Most Scholars attend one of 14 universities across the nation where the Evans Scholars Foundation owns and operates a Scholar-ship House. The Evans Schol-ars Program has been run by the Western Golf Association since its founding in 1930. It is among the nation’s largest privately-funded scholarship programs. Currently, 850 caddies are enrolled in col-lege as Evans Scholars, and more than 9,000 caddies have graduated since the program began. For more information, visit www.wgaesf.com.

St. Ursula Academy is pleased to announce that Toni Moor Kelly has accepted the position of Director of Admissions.

Kelly comes to St. Ursula Academy with tremendous depth of knowledge and affection for the school. A 1981 graduate of St. Ursula, Kelly is a third-generation alumna, following in the footsteps of her mother, aunts, great aunt, and sisters, and preceding her daughters who cur-rently attend.

Mrs. Kelly attended Xavier University and earned her bach-elor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Toledo. She taught in the Washington Local School system for many years before staying home to raise her family. Kelly remained closely involved in her alma mater as an active alumna and parent, assisting with events, reunions, sports and fund rais-ers. For the past two years she has been an important presence in the front office of St. Ursula, assisting students, their parents and visitors.

“I love this school and am looking forward to sharing it with young girls and their parents. For

families who value education, St. Ursula offers high school girls more than just outstanding col-lege-prep academics. SUA offers spiritual enrichment, exceptional college counseling, highly com-petitive academics, wonderful performing and fine arts, and leadership opportunities, both big and small,” said Kelly.

St. Ursula’s president, Sister Mary Kay Homan OP, is extremely pleased with the school’s new hire stating, “We are fortunate to have a person of Toni Kelly’s commitment and love for St. Ursula Academy. Having three daughters in the school gives Mrs. Kelly great credibility.”

St. Ursula Academy is Toledo’s oldest, all-female, accredited, Catholic college pre-paratory high school, and has been educating young women of today for tomorrow since 1854. The mission of St. Ursula Academy is to educate young women to develop their spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emo-tional well-being in light of the values found in the Gospel and reflected in the life of St. Angela Merici.

The March of Dimes Foundation is pleased to announce Dr. Randall Schlievert as this year’s Honorary Chair for the 2010 Signature Chefs Auction, tak-ing place this year on October 25 at Parkway Place in Maumee. Northwest Ohio’s leading chefs are assembling their finest cuisine to delight even the most discriminating palate. The March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction pays tribute to the culinary excel-lence of the top local chefs for the benefit of mothers and babies in our commu-nity. In addition to the delec-table meal and vintage wines, guests will have the opportu-nity to bid on unique auction items.

Dr. Schlievert assumed the position of Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and Designated

Institutional Official (DIO) for Mercy in June 2010. He is a Toledo native and gradu-ated from Genoa High School. He received his bachelor degree from the University of Toledo, attended medical school at the then Medical College of Ohio (UTCOM) and completed his Pediatric residency at the Medical College of Ohio and Mercy Children’s Hospital.

Randy is fellowship trained in Child Abuse and Neglect from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and is a current Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Most recently, Dr. Schlievert has been the Program Director of the Pediatric Residency program at the University of Toledo Medical Center since 2006, where under his leader-ship the residency received

a five-year accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Dr. Schlievert has had the distinction of receiving several commendations and awards in his career includ-ing the Dean’s Award for teaching excellence, and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Medicine Award, just to name a few. We are deeply honored to have Dr. Randy Schlievert chair this year’s event.

Proceeds from Signature Chefs Auction will benefit the March of Dimes campaign to reduce the rate of premature births, birth defects, and other serious threats to babies’ health. More than half a mil-lion babies are born too soon each year. Around 20,000 of these babies are born in

Ohio. That’s why it is so important for local events like this to support the March of Dimes efforts to help babies be born healthy. For more information about the event, please contact Jodi DiSalle-Horns, Division Director, at 419-534-3600 or [email protected].

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, com-munity services, education, and advocacy to save babies. For more information, visit the March of Dimes Web site at www.marchofdimes.com or its Spanish Web site at www.nacersano.org.

The maximum field of 750 participants competed in Olander Park, Sylvania, & Sylvania Township during the 30th annual Sylvania Triathlon on Sunday, August 8.

Sylvania’s triathlon began in 1981 as one of the first in the nation, and is actually four different races: Olympic, Sprint, Team, & Duathlon.

There were three win-ners in the Olympic Triathlon. The “First” to cross the finish line were actually a pair of com-petitors! Aaron Scheidies from Farmington Hills, who is legally blind, com-pleted the event in 1 hour, 57 minutes, and 21 sec-onds, with his “guide,” Matt West of Ypsilanti. Despite Scheidies vision, it is no surprise he and West finished first. Scheidies was the 2003 & 2004 International Triathlon Union Physically Challenged World Champion, 2003 Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame inductee, and the 2006 United States Track Association Athlete of the Year. West is a 2-time Sylvania Triathlon champi-on, in 2006 at 2:00:47 and 2008 at 1:59:26. Scheidies

and West achieved their goal of finishing in less than 2 hours.

Because Scheidies and West are in the Physically-Challenged category, bicycling together on a twin bike, the official Sylvania Triathlon win-ner is Alex Resseau of LaSalle, Michigan. He is one of the few champions in the 30-year history to break the 2 hour mark, at 1:59:15. Jeanne DeBonis of Brecksville, OH, was the Women’s victor in 2:14:14.

Olympic triathletes swim one mile in Lake Olander, then bicycle 26 miles and conclude with a 6.2-mile run, end-ing on Vicksburg Drive. This division features the Collegiate category for college-age participants, as well as the Clydesdales. William Vann, representing Michigan State University, led all Collegiate par-ticipants with a 2:02:08, with Nancy Boyd from Michigan State winning the women’s at 2:29:11. Scott Smith of Allison Park, PA, won the Clydesdale Division at 2:50:04, while Glenn Luther of Toledo was the Senior Clydesdale champion at 2:33:42.

The Sprint Division has the same Swim/Bicycle/Run format as the longer Triathlon, but at shorter distances for newcomers. Sprint triathletes swim one-quarter mile, bike 13 miles, and run 3.1 miles. John Hartpence of Defiance won in 58 minutes and 53 seconds, with Tracy DiSabato of Sunbury, OH, the Woman’s titlist in 1:04:44.

The Duathlon has a Run/Bicycle/Run format, running 3.1 miles around the Olander Park oval, then biking 26 miles and running another 6.2 miles on the same course at the triathletes. The Men’s winner is Zach Szablewski of Tiffin in 2:07:32, with the Woman’s champion being Jennifer Finn of East Lansing at 2:27:24.

Twenty-five groups competed in the Team Competition, where indi-viduals combine their ath-letic specialties into one unit.

The 31st annual “Sylvania Triathlon” is Sunday, August 14, 2011. For details, contact race directors Jim & Joyce Donaldson at 419-829-2398 or at eliteendeavors.com.

Results of the 30th annual Sylvania Triathlon

Almost 200 young triathletes from four states participated in the 20th annual “SuperKids Triathlon” at Olander Park on Saturday, August 7. The “SuperKids” races, for ages 7 to 14, kicked off the Sylvania Triathlon Weekend. Elite Endeavors sponsors the events.

Kids in the 7 to 10 age group swim 100 yards, bicycle 3.1 miles, and run 0.6-mile. The 11 to 14-year-olds swim 200 yards, bicycle 6.2-miles, and run 1.2 miles.

WHEN YOU PUSH FOR TARPS, YOU’RE PUSHING FOR EVERYONE.

When you support TARPS, you’re supporting people with

disabilities who rely on this valuable service and who have no

other means of transportation. Without TARPS, getting to the

pharmacy, the doctor’s office and grocery store would be next

to impossible. So even if you don’t rely on this paratransit

service, think about the people in your family who do.
