The Newsletter of
The Story Begins by Pastor VossIf you simply judge books by their covers, you might pass this book by. It has apicture of newlyweds on the front. It is filled with faces that are surely unfamil-iar to you. Children, adults, grandparents, all enjoying themselves, but nonelook familiar. This book of mine means a lot to me. I was hooked as soon as I
saw the cover and when I open it up, I see people who are dear to me.
My father, who was a confident man.
My mother, who is a soft-spoken and patient woman.
I see Joys entire family, who are rooted deeply in the true faith.
I see all of our nephews and nieces who have the look of youthful inno-cence.
This book is a photo album of our wedding day. Its not just any book, its a
book about family. Each picture has a story that probably wouldnt interest you
too much, but mean the world to me.
Thats what happens when you see a book that contains your story. Somethingthat seems lifeless comes to life. Something that looks dull becomes dynamite, firing up your heart and igniting your imagination. You are reminded that youare part of something bigger than you are, a family that began before you and
will continue on after you.
That is why God wants you to know His story. Its found in the Bible. He wants
to show you pictures of your family. He wants to share with you:
Stories of a family patriarch named Abraham whose faith was as great as
any.
A matriarch named Ruth with courage that would make the most hardened
warrior proud.
A stubborn Jonah and his improbable, but true, fish tale.
Defiant Peter and his troubles and victories.
Persistent Paul and his adventures in preaching.
Yet who God wants most of all for you to meet in his story is His Son. He de-sires for you to look long into the eyes of Jesus Christ and hear His claims thatwhat He began in the first chapter of creation He will realize at the last chapterof the New Creation, where a perfect people can live in a perfect place with
their perfect Lord.
We are reading, studying, and worshipping through the Bible together as a con-gregation. If you have joined us, surely you have benefitted from reading aboutyour Spiritual family. If you havent joined us yet, its not too late! We are still
in Genesis and just beginning to hear our story in Gods Story!

Do you have a spare hour or two during the week? If so, you can be a great benefit to a child
in school this year.
Last school year I spent some time during school hours tutoring children from kindergartenthru fifth grade. I helped with reading, math and sometimes just to spend some time with thechildren who needed the one on one of someone just paying attention with them. So manychildren in our schools today live in single parent homes, and don't get the attention they
need, because the parent may be working full time.
I tutored at Patrick Copeland elementary school, off of Mesa Drive in Hopewell, behind the
high school.
If you think this might be a way you could serve our Lord, please call me at 586-3335, or talk
to me after worship services.
Yours in Christ Arnie Slimmen
Purchase a Small CatechismSupport a Student
Luther Memorial School has two theology courses, one for 7th grade and one for8th grade. Unfortunately, our very own area Lutheran School does not have Small
Catechism books.
We can help! Please consider purchasing a Small Catechism book for these clas-
ses. We need a total of 30 books.
If you are interested, please pay $12 to our secretary, Karen. We will be collectingfunds until October 16. If you donate for a book, we will place your name in thebook, stating, This book donated to you in by (your name). This is a great way
for Nazareth to help students learn the true faith as taught through our Lutheran
Confessions! This is a gift that will last for generations at the school.

Evangelical Outreach and Missions is hosting our Annual Fall Festival
Weekend on Saturday, October 1st, and Sunday, October 2nd, this year. We
are asking the members of Nazareth to start making and preparing arts and
crafts that they would like to sell. We have many talented people in the con-
gregation and we are hoping you are willing to contribute. If you have a
special talent at making things and needs some assistance with getting sup-
plies, please let us know so we can help you.
We will be having fun games and activities to keep the kids enter-
tained and our next outside service will be scheduled for that Sunday too.
We are looking forward to this special weekend and hope you are too.
Please mark your calendars and pray for wonderful sunny fall weather.
Fall Festival Weekend
Vacation Bible School Recap
We had 60 children attend the Big Jungle Adventure a Faith Journey with Jesus Vaca-tion Bible School Program this year. It was a very fun week, from July 11th through
17th. The children loved it. Many of the members volunteered their time to make the
week a success.
Cindy Reierson was in charge of Music. We learned "Whose the King of the Jungle" and
many other great songs that will be remembered for years. Jean Joyner and Carol Slim-
men kept the Kitchen open to serve us great snacks. Pastor Voss took care of Story
Time and Bible Challenge Time. Karen and Madison Van Worth were our "Craft Mas-
ters".
Joey and Clint Reierson ran the fantastic games.
The following brave and dedi-cated people were our Tribe Leaders: Charlene Logan, Kathy Petik, Jim and Angie Mor-
ris, Arnie Slimmen, and Martha Staples. There were also many who helped as helpers,
decorators and with clean-up.
Thank you all again for a job well done in teaching God's love to our children. We make
a great team. God bless you all for all your loving work!

From the pen of Jonah FistlerDuring the July 2011 Youth Mission Event, held here at Nazareth, some of the youth helped outat the Hopewell Humane Society. Due to overcrowding, they are running out of funds and sup-plies. There are many cats up for adoption, and the shelter is unable to take in any more cats orkittens. The Humane Society is a no-kill shelter. In desperate need of space, time, money, vol-unteers, food and other essentials, they are asking for our support and help.
Some of the cats available for adoption are:
Danielle (or as Joey called her, Tank) - She is a puffball calico lap kitty.Eileen is a solid black attention hog.Mittens looks like a clouded leopard and is a solitary kitty. She is very low-maintenance, be-
ing something of a loner.Romeo he is almost solid black, very active and loves climbing and peoples attention.
Many more. Come take a look or just spend some time and give them some much neededTLC.
These cats have been abandoned or are from abusive homes. Please consider giving one ormore of these precious creatures a forever home.
Adoption fees are as follows:
For $70 adults are spayed/neutered and vetted For $90 kittens are vaccinated.
The Hopewell Humane Society is located at 3412 Oaklawn Boulevard. Phone is 804 -458-7301.Volunteers must be 18 years old or more.

"The food was great I really enjoyed it.""I liked hanging out with the little kids at the Boys & Girls Club.""I loved the Veteran's Hospital & the Good Neighbor Village. These were veryinspiring and fun." "I didn't like that lights out really meant lights out!"

Mission Prayer Partners
Page 8 The Good News
Dear Prayer Partners,
I pray this message finds you well and that theongoing heat of summer is not overbearing foryou. During these next weeks, I invite yourprayer support for four very specific missions.
Muslim Outreach - Baltimore LINC.
This mission has been an important part of ourprayers over the past year. We celebrate and
give thanks to God for the growth that has tak-en place.
This growing group is now meeting weekly forBible Study and prayer. Falak Robson hasbeen accepted into the Ethnic Immigrant Insti-tute of Theology. We pray for courage andboldness for those who are sharing the Gospelin a setting that is not favorable to learningabout Christianity. We pray for all who arehearing the Word that their hearts will be read-ied and message welcomed.
Emmanuel Child Development Center,Hampton. Emmanuel is up to their eyeballs intaking the steps necessary to create space forministry that involves babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. These little children will learn thesongs of Jesus' love and share them with theirfamilies. The prayer and energy of this congre-gation is that the seeds of faith will be plantedand nurtured through this ministry.
Pray with me that indeed God will thiswork, prepare the way for permits and
building improvements to take place in atimely fashion, and energize the congre-gation for their mission work through thiseffort. Pray also that a Director for thisministry will be found.
Embraced by Christ, Ladysmith VA. Thismission is growing, such that they are justabout out of their current location and looking
to rent a larger suite of offices that will give themboth worship and Sunday school space. Conversa-tions today include planning for a mission develop-er. This ministry is a satellite sight of Redeemer inFredericksburg and it is a wonderful example of thecreative partnership of congregation, circuit, andDistrict working together for the sake of God's King-dom.
Please pray for continued opportunities to beknown throughout the local community, in-creased faith-sharing with neighbors andfriends, and for a mission developer.
Spotlight English Clubis a mission ofFountainof Life, Kernersville, NC (FOL), to share Jesuswith non-English speaking people. This group gath-ers weekly in a Hair and Nail Salon with 50-60 peo-ple. They started in the church, but sometimes 1 or2 people came. FOL members learned that beingthe church in the community provides a greater op-portunity to reach people with the Gospel. MarcoSegvio is providing leadership in this mission effort. He is hoping to enter the Specific Ministry Pastorprogram in the Fall. He shares that this mission
needs tables, chairs, and materials in both Spanishand English.
We pray for each person who is strengthenedin faith as they hear and learn the Word inSpanish and in English. We pray for the grow-ing work of this mission as they seek to servethe community in many ways that will providefor human need and share Jesus. We also liftup Marco Segvio in his studies and leadershipthat God will guide and bless him in this work.
Thank you, Sally Hiller

Excerpted from LWR News, summer 2011
Lutheran World Relief has an ongoing program called Fill the Well to help peoplein developing countries lead healthy, productive lives. Your gifts can help provide acommunity water system, gravity-fed water filters, or emergency water filters. In
every case the gift of water opens a world of promise to people in need.
One Fact: Women in Africa and Asia walk an average of four miles to collect water everyday. With more accessible supplies of clean water, women have more time to care
for their families, to learn and to earn.
Second Fact: One out of every six of us1.2 billion peopledoes not have access to
clean drinking water.
Third Fact: For the lack of sanitation facilities and clean water, 1.5 million children dieeach year from diarrhea. Soap and clean water save lives.
True Story: Esther and Isaac live in Kenya. They bought a small plot of land in KenyasMakueni district. Covered in brush, the plot sat on a rocky hillside. Growing food wouldbe challenging, but Esther and Isaac were hopeful because LWR was working with local
community associations to help farmers access water for their crops.
Inspired by the promise of water, the couple did the unimaginable. For two years, they manually pulverized rock into soil. The LWR project also taught them to terrace, building up mounds on hillsides to trap water and increase soil fertility. Because of what
they learned and were willing to do, crops now grow on their land. Their corn, beans, pa-paya and other crops feed the couple and their livestock. Every inch of their land works
to support them.
Esther credits the LWR water project as key to her success. She says, Without wa-
ter, we could do nothing.
One way to help: Give an LWR Gift to someone you love to benefit the Water Project. They will love knowing the good it does. Visit www.lwrgifts.org or call 800-597-5972.
