Task Pair up your students and give them a bag of key words, all of which are images of human pathogens. Ask students to find out the following information about their microbe. They could then present this information in the form of a passport or a microbe curriculum vitae. They then need to find out information about the pathogen they have selected: u What type of microbe causes the disease e.g. is it a bacterium? u What disease does the pathogen cause? u How is the disease transmitted? u What are the symptoms of the disease? u How long does it lasts for? u Can the disease be treated? u Is there is a vaccine for the disease? u Is the disease endemic in any areas of the world?

A Bag of Diseases

This can be used as a synoptic activity at the end of the section on Microbes and the Human Body to see if the students have understood the process of how infectious diseases are transmitted and how they may be prevented or treated.
