Voices of a New BeginningIt is amazing how quickly time passes by especially when you’re having lots of fun, as they say. Thanks to you, TFC All Access has become one of the strongest entertainment magazines targeting Filipinos since we debuted just last February. But to quote T.S. Eliot, “Last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

While we celebrate our many gains from 2013, I look forward to 2014 because of the huge promise that it holds. Attorney Michael J. Gurfinkel believes in the Filipino

saying of “tumanaw ng utang na loob” (Debt of gratitude). He knows that he owes so much to the tens of thousands of Pinoys who placed their trust and confidence in his office for the most important aspect of their lives—their immigration status and future in the U.S.

It was a reunion she only dreamt about, but never thought would ever happen. She was so happy for the chance to share her blessings with loved ones in person. That’s what Citizen Pinoy is all about: maintaining that sense of family and friendship, of

sharing one’s blessings, and “Bringing Families Together....”

Marrying her long-time partner Joelette and getting a green card are just the first of many steps in realizing Karen’s American Dream. Truthfully for us here at Citizen Pinoy and for Atty. Gurfinkel, we treat our guests’ success, and their hardships, as our own, and as we reach our 9th year, we hope to share more of our blessings by “BRINGING MORE FAMILIES TOGETHER.”

InnexTt is no mean feat to gather young artists’ names, to celebrate the best that is to come in 2014, out of the throngs of celebrities who deserve equal space in the spotlight.

At the beginning of every year, we had begun a tradition of identifying who among the new—or newly talked-about—set deserves to be cited as potential newsmakers, or industry shakers. So, for our first issue this year, we once again gathered heads, involved industry leaders’ opinions, and began

the almost-daily ritual of assessing, changing, and re-arranging this hotlist. We debated. We agreed to disagree.

And of the usual qualifications (such as participation in groundbreaking television shows and movies, reception of recognitions and awards, or new endorsements) that characterize each Big Bet, we deemed two things to be an added constant: They all had to be under 30, and they had to have made big, really big waves in the year that was, 2013.

It was the way social media enjoyed talking about them last year. It was the way they made the world hungry, and curious about them. It was the way magazines loved having them as their covers. It was the way a single show, or a performance, defined their stature in the business, and in society. It was the demand and the clamor to make them—mostly newbies in this phenomenon called superstardom—instantly at home with the industry, with viewers, fans, endorsements, and producers entrusting them that same trust that had been given other more accomplished young stars.

Some names are obviously not here. This does not mean they are less than qualified, however. For indeed: they all had been big bets themselves—maybe in 2012, maybe earlier—and they all are now the superstars still basking in and enjoying the limelight that showbusiness affords them.

So, why is our list, 2014’s most promising new names? Why did some make it, fresh and new as they are?

And, while some are no strangers to showbiz, why are we still placing our bets on them?

First Honors

anGeL LOCSIn, 28, is not just one of showbiz’s most beautiful and sexiest, topping industry-wide countdowns and polls year after year; she has also earned her place in the industry as an actress with notable performances both in the movies and on television such as in Darna and Lobo. The latter series, in which she played a she-wolf, earned Angel a nomination as Best Actress in the 2009 International Emmy Awards, only the second Filipina to be nominated after Tessie Tomas (nominated for her portrayal of former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos in “A Dangerous Life”). Today, Angel is regarded as one of the finest dramatic actresses of her generation, earning both nominations and awards from FAMAS to the Film Academy of the Philippines’ Luna Awards and the Star Awards for Movies and recently even diversified into TV comedy via TodaMax. She is also a top celebrity endorser and continues to earn the trust of advertisers, brands and companies year after year.

anGeLICa PanGanIban, 27, has matured into a competent and versatile performer. Aside from her notable film appearances, she won Best Comedy Actress awards and nominations in the ENPRESS Golden Screen and PMPC Star Awards for Banana Split and recently starred in the indie film Alamat ng China Doll, for which she won a Best Actress award.Angelica celebrated her 20th anniversary in showbiz in 2013, and appeared on the cover of StarStudio. In that issue, ABS-CBN Business Unit Head and veteran TV director Ruel Bayani zeroed in on what makes Angelica successful: she dares to be herself. “Nandu’n na tayo na even if ‘yung artistang ito ay hindi darling of the press, hindi siya favorite ng think tank, she can still cover all bases. She can still carve her own niche. She can still create her own identity. At siguro kaya interesting si Angelica is because effortlessly niya ito ginagawa.”

anne CUrTIS, 28, may have become controversial recently, but she is definitely an industry powerhouse. One of the most beautiful faces in showbiz, she is an in-demand endorser and magazine cover girl. From TV to movies to endorsements, her name looms large. In 2013, Anne also became the first Filipina to be honored with her own E! News Asia Special. E! News Asia flew a crew into the country to document Anne’s life and career. Unbelievably, she also crowned herself a recording and concert star with her Annebisyosa album, concert and world tour. The video of her performance of “Without You”, a duet with Concert King Martin Nievera, has had nearly 2.5 million hits to date. Anne is also one of the most popular Filipino celebrities on social media. This latest controversy only seems to have, in a strange way, added to her popularity, with Internet memes of her saying that line flooding cyberspace.

In the world of celluloid, bea aLOnzO, 26, stands out for her memorable performances, especially those that paired her with John Lloyd Cruz. Although Bea has turned in some memorable performances on the small screen, including Maging Sino Ka Man and the fashion-serye Magkaribal, her movie roles like One More Chance(2007), And I Love You So (2009) and The Mistress (2012) were what ‘made’ her. Her latest, “She’s The One”, in which she starred opposite Dingdong Dantes made P12 million on opening day and added to her stature as one of the prime leading ladies in local showbiz. The secret, shares Bea, is being daring in her choice of roles. In “She’s The One”, she went with her instincts. “Sinunod ko ‘yung gut feel ko na it might work, nag-jump in na lang ako. Sabi ko, maybe it’s about time for me to do something na out of my comfort zone.”

CharICe, 21, is on this list because of her international success. The former Little Big Star finalist (who was, ironically, eliminated after her first performance, came back as a wildcard entry then made it to the finals) became a big one after her appearance on Oprah and later, the Ellen de Generes show. From there, Charice went to even bigger success, performing on stages all over the world with some of the music biz’s biggest stars, from Celine Dion to Andrea Bocelli (she sang a duet of “The Prayer” with the famous tenor in front of more than 8,000 people in his hometown of Tuscany, Italy) and landing a guest appearance on the hit show Glee. Her international single Pyramid became a huge success and was followed by “Before it Explodes” written by Bruno Mars. Locally, she continued to stay in the public eye through X Factor Philippines and her much talked-about ‘coming out’.

enChOnG dee, 25, had a breakout year in 2012 that continued right into 2013. He starred in Ina, Kapatid, Anak followed by Muling Buksan ang Puso. Doing two successive heavy dramas gave Enchong’s acting career a giant push. Last year was a very productive year, career-wise, for Enchong, who put three movies in the can: Four Sisters and a Wedding (where he was the lone male lead star); Tuhog and Call Center Girl. He also appeared in Yeng Constantino’s video of her hit song “Chinito”, directed by Avid Liongoren. It won top honors at the 2013 Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Music as Music Video of the Year. Maybe because of his background as a competitive athlete, Enchong, a bemedalled UAAP swimmer, came into show business with a winner’s attitude. This will carry him far.

into a thriving career. Gerald made some risky career choices that paid off (such as playing a mentally-challenged character in Budoy and a deglamorized, cold-blooded killer in On the Job).The latter made it to the Cannes Film Festival and helped Gerald transcend his matinee idol image. But the trek to becoming a more ‘serious’ actor began for him in 2010 when he scored a Best Single Performance by an Actor win (for MMK’s ‘Lubid’ episode) from the Philippine Movie Press Club’s Star Awards for Television. Along with the slowly shifting trend of his career, Gerald seems to have found a niche for himself in philanthropic work. He actively supports various charities, among them those that cater to and support mentally-challenged children, through Cottolengo Filipino, and children with cancer (through the Cancer Warriors).

JULIa mOnTeS, 18, is building up a list of achievements that belie her age—and there lies her strength as an actress. Because she is tall and big-boned, she is able to play successfully against type. The best showcase of this was her starring opposite Coco Martin in Walang Hanggan. The show was a runaway hit, maintaining the top spot in viewer ratings for most of its run, with its final episode on October 26, 2012 attaining its highest rating of 45.4% nationwide and establishing Julia as a major star. Julia also made movies, starring in The Way Back Home and The Reunion and returned to primetime TV drama in Muling Buksan ang Puso which earned her plaudits even from the veterans in the cast, like Susan Roces. “I worked with Julia in Walang Hanggan and it was so memorable, masarap si Julia katrabaho.”

KaThryn bernardO, 17, crowned herself local showbiz’s Teen Queen with well-received appearances in Princess and I and Got to Believe, where she was partnered with Daniel Padilla. She also had an entry in the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival, a horror flick titled Pagpag. Kathryn is also one of the most in-demand young celebrities as far as endorsements are concerned; her latest was being launched as one of four new faces of SM Accessories. In 2013, Yahoo OMG! conferred on her Breakthrough Actress of the Year honors after choosing her its Most Promising Actress in 2012 and its Awesome Young Actress awardee in 2011. But this is no reason to rest on her laurels, says the hardworking young star. “Happy of course, pero hindi ibig sabihin, super relaxed na,” she said. “You have to do good para maganda yung mapanood ng viewers.”

KIm ChIU, 23, blazed a trail for reality show contestants seeking to build a successful career in show business. Kim

was 16 years old when she became the first Pinoy Big Brother Teen Big Winner in 2006. Seven years later, the hard-working Kim has become one of the busiest young celebrities in showbiz. She has several hit shows to her credit, with each one showcasing a different facet of her as an actress: My Girl (where we first became aware of her comedic talent), Tayong Dalawa (where she played a young wife), My Binondo Girl and Ina, Kapatid, Anak (where she bloomed into a promising dramatic actress). On ASAP, she displays her talents in hosting and dancing. Kim has also bloomed into a fashion icon and is now considered one of the most fashionable stars in the under-30 age bracket. In terms of endorsements, Kim is in the elite circle. To date, she has 14 active endorsements.

maJa SaLvadOr, 25 has been in showbiz for a number of years and comes from a formidable showbiz clan that includes the likes of her uncle Philip Salvador, but despite occasional brilliant performances through the years (including being named the Star Awards for Movies’ New Movie Actress of the Year in 2006 for the horror-suspense flick Sukob), she did not have a real breakout moment until 2011. In that year, Maja starred in the independently-produced film Thelma for which she won two Best Actress awards, one from the critics’ group URIAN and the other, from the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP). The double win—and the two other nominations she earned for that film—was a clear and resounding validation of Maja’s talent. She has gone from strength to strength over the years and recently celebrated her 10th anniversary in showbiz with a touring dance concert, Maja Unveils @ 10.

Sarah GerOnImO, 25, has grown by leaps and bounds since winning Star For a Night in 2003. International producer Christian de Walden, who had the opportunity to work with her on one of her albums, said: “The personality of her voice is phenomenally distinct. Many have great voices but they tend to imitate foreign divas like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. She definitely is the biggest talent I have come across in the last ten years...”Sarah also successfully established herself as an actress in films like A Very Special Love, You Changed My Life and It Takes A Man and a Woman, all phenomenally successful. On television, Sarah proved she could hold her own as a coach on The Voice of the Philippines. She is also an endorsement favorite. “Sabi ko nga po, sabay-sabay dumadating ang blessings sa buhay po natin ngayon, kaya wala po akong mahihiling pa,” she says.

Sam mILby, 29 had more minuses than pluses when he first emerged from the Pinoy Big Brother house in 2005. He was new to the industry and had trouble speaking Tagalog which limited the types of roles he could play. But as he gained confidence, Sam began to explore other facets of his talent. He went into music, recording a self-titled debut album that was followed by three others. He has appeared in 15 movies to date, including two indies. His boy-next-door appeal has also put him on the list of prime celebrity endorsers for such big-ticket brands as Samsung and Milanos shoes, a high-end brand of SM Footwear. Sam has the talent for reinventing himself. An article in The Philippine STAR puts it thus: “Sam is already in the thick of changing gears. Decisions have been made with his talent managements Cornerstone and Star Magic. With their support, Sam’s career trajectory is about to change dramatically.”

TOnI GOnzaGa, 29 is known as the ‘Ultimate Multi-Media Star’, a title that is not without basis. Although she is known primarily as a host, having made her name in shows like Pinoy Big Brother, The Buzz and recently, The Voice of the Philippines, Toni has also had well-received appearances as an actress on TV (in Maging Sino Ka Man, Crazy for You and soon, in the sitcom Home Sweetie Home opposite John Lloyd Cruz) and in film, with box-office hit movies such as My Amnesia Girl, also with John Lloyd. As a recording artist, Toni has released six studio albums; five of them turned Gold with sales of upwards of 10,00 copies; Falling in Love (2007), which sold more than 40,000, was conferred a Platinum certification. Toni also continues to be in-demand as a magazine cover girl (she was on StarStudio’s cover in 2013 with sister Alex for the “Beauty and Body Special”) and celebrity endorser.

xIan LIm, 24, Kim Chiu’s current loveteam partner and co-star in Ina, Kapatid, Anak, spent the first few years waiting patiently for his big break. This came when he was cast opposite Kim in My Binondo Girl. The reaction was overwhelming, with the My Binondo Girl finale trending worldwide on Twitter. Xian and Kim were immediately cast in a follow-up project, the primetime drama Ina, Kapatid, Anak. (They are also set to do another movie together after Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?) Xian, who grew up with music and learned to play the piano as a child, also took a stab at a singing career. In 2012, he recorded a studio album, So It’s You, under Star Records. The album received a Double Platinum certification. That year, he also recorded two songs for the Ina, Kapatid, Anak.

She became a star even before her first show could debut on air. Launched as part of Star Magic Circle 2013, Julia Barretto seemed destined for stardom

daughters and the niece of Claudine and Gretchen, the teenage Julia (who first appeared on TV as the younger version of the character Claudine played in Walang Kapalit) first made heads turn at the 2012 Star Magic Ball, where she caught the eye of ABS-CBN executives during the cotillon. In mid-2013, she was launched as part of Star Magic Circle 2013. But early on, it was obvious that she was meant to stand out—and the industry knew it too. At first, she joined her batchmates, guesting on various shows like ASAP 18, Gandang Gabi Vice, It’s Showtime and Kris TV, and going on mall shows and radio tours.

But then several months after being launched, Julia began to break away from the pack, her first major step forward this year. She was the first member of Star Magic Circle 2013 to headline a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode. It was a tough role that cast her as a teenage girl whose life reaches a turning point when her mother leaves them for another man because of her father’s drug addiction. In 2013, Jessy Mendiola spiced up her career with big help from her high-impact projects, endorsements and achievements.

First, she bagged the lead role in the primetime serye Maria Mercedes,

her second primetime title role after Sabel in 2010. (In between, she did the daytime drama Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Paraiso, opposite Matteo Guidicelli).

Maria Mercedes premiered on October 7, 2013, debuting on the fifth spot with a national rating of 23.8% based on data available from Kantar Media. It was a validation of Jessy’s title as the “newest primetime princess”. That, along with an endorsement of sorts from Thalia, the original Maria Mercedes—done via Skype during a segment on Anthony Taberna’s current affairs program Tapatan ni Tunying—sealed the deal and made it official. “All the luck in the world to you,” said Thalia to Jessy. “I know you’re gonna do an amazing job!” said Thalia.

Jessy also made a splash when she landed four high-profile magazine covers and two product endorsements—for the mobile messaging application LINE and McDonald’s—in 2013. robi Domingo made great strides in 2013. He started finding his niche as a television host, parlaying his boy-next-door looks and

charisma into a career path that was right up his alley.

What worked in his favor were his hosting stints in several high-profile shows, a somehow remarkable feat for someone who started out as a Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition housemate in 2008. “Nakita n’yo naman, nag-ASAP agad siya then nag-host din siya ng PBB Uber. Even then, you could already feel that Robi has that passion and love for hosting,” says ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Reilly Santiago, who is in charge of I Dare You (Season Two), the latest addition to Robi’s long list of hosting assignments.

In 2013, Robi seemed to get better as a host. His exposure to a wide range of television shows polished his emceeing skills even more. “For 2013, mayroon siyang ASAP, The Voice of the Philippines and I Dare You. Malaki ang exposure niya sa I Dare You as one of the hosts. This will give him the chance to get better pa,” adds Reilly. In 2013, honesty found its newest face. Five-year-old Raikko Mateo, now popularly known as ‘Honesto’, crashed into primetime and crowned himself its newest child star. Raikko followed in the footsteps of two other discoveries

of Dreamscape Entertainment Television (producer of hit ABS-CBN teleseryes), Zaijan Jaranilla and Xyriel Manabat.

Once a pre-schooler from Zambales who consistently topped his class, Raikko auditioned for the role because of a simple dream: he wanted to see himself on TV.

His dreams came true in a big way in 2013. Honesto debuted in the top spot on October 28, 2013 with a high 30.5% share of the national viewership, according to the marketing research firm Kantar Media. And since then, it has consistently stayed on top.

A story published on abs-cbnnews.com pointed out that the show’s official hashtags also made it to the list of top trending topics on micro-blogging site Twitter.

It was meant to be Raikko’s time to shine. Many other talented kids came to be screened for the part until the race came down to three hopefuls who were put through a workshop conducted by Star Magic. At the end of it all, Raikko got chosen to play the little boy whose nose swells when he lies.

That single show has turned the five-year-old into an instant star. Biboy Arboleda, Advertising and Promotions Head of Dreamscape, said in an interview published in the Manila Bulletin, that the young actor got the role because “his eyes hold a lot of innocence.”

As Raikko’s mom Leneth would attest, “nu’ng bata pa po talaga siya, ’yun ’yung pansinin sa kanya ng mga tao.”

His round, expressive eyes and convincing acting (despite his young age) have drawn raves from audiences. He may be a kid who enjoys playing during his free time but when he goes on set and the camera rolls, he shifts into a serious actor.

A viewer of Honesto, who’s also a mom, sees innocence in the eyes of Raikko, an audience connection that is a must for every actor. It makes empathizing with the character easier. “Parang kapag masaya siya, masaya ka din. Pero ’pag nakita mo siyang malungkot, malungkot talaga. Factor talaga na you connect with the audience at nagagawa niya ’yon.”

It was a stroke of luck, perhaps destiny, that he landed the part. “’Yung sa Honesto po, nakita lang po talaga namin sa TV na nangangailangan po ’yung ABS-CBN ng new child wonder,” reveals his mother.

He is a wonderful concoction of a walking contradiction.

Piolo Pascual is the biggest star of his generation, yet walks in humility. He’s a talented actor, yet a genuine person. He can be formal and serious, yet, in a matter of seconds, show off a

little-seen pilyo side. He has the mind of someone older that acts mature and responsible yet possesses the heart of a little boy. He’s charming and friendly but, at the same time, can be intensely private.

He is also full of surprises. The initial plan for this StarStudio shoot was to feature his home in Quezon City but Piolo, in a surprising move, offered to open up his Makati condo that he just moved into, very much alone and without any assistant, months ago.

The first stop: Quezon City.

behind the LensIt was a relatively peaceful wait for the main star of the shoot when the silence in the 175-square meter condominium unit in a residential area near ABS-CBN was interrupted by a persistent banging on the door. The knocking was loud and sounded urgent, as if the person waiting outside was in some kind of hurry or simply deranged.

“Ayan na siya…” Moi Marcampo, Piolo’s personal assistant announced, as she opened the door to reveal Piolo, looking very casual that Wednesday afternoon, clad in a pair of gray walking shorts and a dark blue, button-down polo. He had just arrived from Makati to join the StarStudio crew and his household staff who were waiting for him to get there so the shoot could begin. Taking one step into the living room of the condo, he said, in jest, “I just wanted to make my presence felt.”

It was a clear demonstration of the homeowner’s playful side. “I like pulling pranks on people at home, ’yung manggugulat ka na lang. I love laughing and making people laugh. I love the thought of feeling good because you laugh. It brings out the joy in your heart,” he added.

This is the Piolo we wanted to get to know: to see what his life is like off-camera and how he conducts himself in the comforts of his own home.

Piolo, one of ABS-CBN’s most bankable stars and one of the country’s top individual taxpayers in 2012 (he was number 34 on the list, having paid a total of P23 million in taxes), is a fan of simplicity. You would think that an actor of his stature would opt for a grand testament of his wealth and achievements but the actor’s home is pretty much a reflection of himself—simple yet elegant.

The actor bought his Quezon City abode (originally made up of three units) almost a decade ago when he was still doing the primetime drama Sa Puso Ko, Iingatan Ka opposite Judy Ann Santos. He chanced on the property when they were taping at the building. L.A.

“Dito lumalabas ang pagka-OC ko,” says Piolo when he showed his color-coded shirts and clothing. He proudly showed his revolving closet, also known as the closet carousel (left photo) , which houses numerous polo and button-down shirts.

Piolo’s shoe closet is also where he keeps his luggage. He’s a fan of John Varvatos and Diesel jeans.

Mumar, son of actress Coney Reyes (then his co-star in the show), urged him to buy it. Piolo gave in and bought the units at a pre-selling price of P1 million per unit.

He chose the location because it allowed him to blend in. He didn’t buy in an exclusive subdivision or pick a grand home where he would be surrounded by the rich and famous; he craved the anonymity of his current middle-class Quezon City neighborhood. “I like to be situated in a place where there is a big community on the side and no one will ever think that I actually live here. I like the camouflage,” he stated.

Even in terms of the look, he wanted something simple. “I wanted it to be minimalist and very earthy, so we used a lot of wood pieces from Vigan. I wanted it really subtle,” he says.

In keeping with that vision, the interiors of the condo are clean and streamlined, painted in white with furniture and accent pieces made mostly from wood, and earth-toned items that fill the small space from the living room, to the kitchen and beyond, to the bedroom and walk-in closet. The actor’s need for space and air is evident as the staircase appears to be free-flowing and has no rails. The walls leading to his bedroom are made of clear, transparent glass.

Piolo shares that Star Magic’s Chairman Emeritus and TV director Johnny Manahan—better known as ‘Mr. M’—collaborated on the design of the place with him and did it for free.

“I didn’t have specific bilin, but with the staircase, I pictured how it’s gonna look. I wanted it free-flowing, with air and everything. Because when you live in a condo, you want space. You live with this limited space so even the doors and the windows are all open,” The accents are the furniture. I also wanted something ‘living’ in this house that’s why there’s an aquarium here by the hallway,” he said, pointing to the corner where two fish were swimming peacefully.

He would have wanted a house, but it is difficult to maintain, “especially for someone like me that travels a lot,” says Piolo. This small but compact unit has hosted numerous gatherings of Piolo and his friends. Their small group of about 20 used to meet here for Bible study. His son Inigo has also spent some time here. Piolo himself has learned how to be comfortable in this small space. “I don’t want to be constantly feeling the need for company, which I probably would if I lived in a big house. At least this place, being small, gives me a certain sense of security, knowing that there’s always someone downstairs. There are always people around you. Even my household staff stays in a different unit. It gives me a sense of security knowing that I’m surrounded by people. Whereas in Makati, I’m totally on my own,” he continues.

What is his typical day at home like? “I wake up. I go straight to the bathroom and then leave. Basically, upon waking up, I read the Bible, shower and then go. That’s it. It takes me less than 30 minutes,” he says. His favorite areas in his home are the bedroom and bathroom. “I love spending

time in the tub. I love taking a bath.”The condo is a more or less accurate representation of

who Piolo is. It is a showcase of the things and activities he loves—from the colorful magnets on one wall, to his bikes and personal gym.

He keeps the magnets as a reminder of the places he’s been. “Because when you travel, you tend to want to keep something or bring something with you. So this is really the easiest. This collection reminds me of where I’ve been. I’ve always wanted a wall, or a mirror, where I can put my souvenirs, my collection of where I’ve been,” he explained.

Piolo used to think about building his dream house but has put the plan on hold for a very special reason. “I’m not building it yet. I want to build it with my wife and have her plan the house with me. And I don’t want to be impractical by building a house now and then renovating it when I get married. I want to be able to build something with somebody, and share her ideas on how to compartmentalize everything.”

In QC, Piolo maintains a small household staff that includes his longtime ‘yaya’, Moi, known in showbiz circles as Moi Bien. When he told her and the rest of the staff about his plans of moving to Makati and buying another condo so he could be on his own, Moi and the gang panicked. “Nagtanong sila. They thought mag-aasawa na ako. Parang ayaw ko na daw sila kasama,” he laughs.

But Piolo is convinced that there is definitely something to be said for living on his own. “It gives me a certain sense of freedom, I guess. Being independent forces me to become more responsible. Having my staff around me, I can just easily ask them to do things for me. But in Makati, I’m forced to clean the house. I’m forced to turn my bed down, or do everything myself before I leave for the day. I try and it’s hard. Pero ang sarap! Ang sarap ng feeling of living on your own.”

a new environmentLater in the day, as the sun began to set, the StarStudio crew drove across town from Quezon City to Makati, where Piolo maintains his ‘other place,’ a 120-square meter loft-type sanctuary.

There was nothing dramatic about his decision to move. Says Piolo: “I just woke up one day and realized I needed a new environment. They were all surprised. I didn’t plan it. It just happened.”

Piolo insisted it was best to have the photo shoot at the Makati condo at nighttime. We later realized it was for a good reason: the property affords a good view of the breathtaking Makati skyline at night.

“That’s what attracted me to it. I wake up in the morning with a smile on my face when I look out the windows. I like seeing space here too. It helps me to breathe, I guess. I like the quiet when I’m here. Sobrang tahimik,” he smiles.

The bedroom also features a white bookshelf housing books that were mostly given to him as gifts. Upon closer inspection, the books are made up of travel books and those that delve on spiritual and Christian matters. His favorite books include the Bible, The Heavenly Man by Brother Yun and Paul Hattaway and Wild at Heart by John Eldredge.

“This home represents me. It is a testament to who I am, what I am and what I do,” Piolo says. His home shows his personality and his interests. He loves biking (which he does in Clark, Pampanga), travelling (as attested by his wall of ref magnets) and working out (he installed a personal gym at home).

Just like in Quezon City, the Makati condo speaks of his simplicity and need for orderliness. The minimalist look and earth tones of the QC condo are repeated here as well. The space is not cluttered; Piolo took with him only a few items so he could maximize the space.

“I took two bikes which I use for biking in Clark. The items I brought with me are mostly cameras, computers, gadgets and I also have a TV in the study. I have piling-piling clothes—the ones I wear. Even when I go abroad, these are the things I take with me—the choice pieces,” he says.

The decorative accents include a Vitra clock by the staircase (“I like that it’s wood, chrome and steel…” he says) and four really small wooden chairs that he bought during a trip to the Banaue Rice Terraces (“It looks small but when you sit on it, it’s very comfortable…”).

After Makati, he has his eye on acquiring a property in Batangas.

a man overwhelmedIt has been almost 20 years since showbiz became the playground of Piolo Pascual. (Piolo began his career in 1994 in the youth-oriented show That’s Entertainment). At this point, it is hard to imagine the local showbiz industry without Piolo. But in the rollercoaster ride that is show business, is he happy and satisfied with the turns his career has taken?

“I’m more than satisfied with my career,” he begins. “I’ve surpassed my goals, my dreams, my outlook, all the things I’ve wanted to do. I went beyond my plan so I’m not just satisfied, I’m overwhelmed by all the things that have been happening. It’s humbling because life in showbiz is fleeting. It’s something I knew from the get-go na it’s not something to be grasped. These are all just going to pass and what’s important is what you learn from it…. what you pick up from it… and how it made you a better person, literally and figuratively,” he says thoughtfully.

Truly, a star like him with a grandslam best actor award for the movie Dekada 70, a wide range of product endorsements, 10 soap operas, studio albums as a singer, numerous concerts, tours and movies under his belt—what else is there to expect?

“Maybe something that can surprise me too. Like singing and producing—it just fell into place. I’m doing concerts and next thing you know, I’m producing movies. I go with the flow. It has a lot to do with the chances and the opportunities that come my way. If there’s an opportunity for me to learn, I grab it,” he says.

One of this year’s highlights for the actor was doing the critically successful OTJ (On The Job) , a film directed by Erik Matti.

It was an unforgettable experience for Piolo—and there was one scene in particular that made it so. “I wouldn’t say it was a walk in the park but one of the things that intrigued me about it and made me want to do the movie was the death scene. When I was shot, I liked it and enjoyed it so much. I don’t know how to die, I don’t know when to die. In my movies, I never die. It was fun, you know—just the thought of me dying in a movie. I’d

always want to break the mold. Ang morbid ’no? Pero it’s something different kasi and it’s something that is not a given. Those are the things that excite me, when I do things that are out of the box. I get my drive from it.”

Shooting the movie was a unique experience for him. Known primarily as a dramatic actor, prime leading man and heartthrob, he got to indulge his ‘action star’ side. “We were asked to run a lot and we did a lot of chasing. A lot of gun fights. It was fun. I was surprised when I saw the finished scenes. I was like ‘Wow, ang galing ng coverage!’” he says, clearly euphoric about the project.

Does this mean he’s going to do less leading man roles from now on? “Hindi naman. I’m doing Unlove You with Toni Gonzaga right now for Valentine’s. I want to do different things. I didn’t do a movie for a long time before because I didn’t want to do the same thing over and over. I didn’t do a movie for two years, but this is the forte of Star

Cinema eh,” he observes.After the movie with Toni, Piolo is taking on an indie

project called Silong, a socio-psycho drama thriller which he is also co-producing. The movie will be released this year. “It’s a suspense-thriller and I play a psychopath. You have to bend it every once in a while. It’s your obligation as an artist to do different shows or play roles that your audience hasn’t seen you do. You don’t want to shortchange the audience because they’re the ones that pay,” he continues, the passion in his voice evident.

Is there a difference between the Piolo Pascual then and the person that he is now?

Piolo admits: “I’ve mellowed a lot. Now, I like to rest more. Before, I was a go-getter. Now, parang I want to be able to relax after a day’s work, or I want to have more time to sleep instead of work, work, work. The last thing I want is for me to get burned out. I love what I do pero I’ve realized that

That having been said, he remains extremely thankful for the blessings and milestones that have come his way, among them notching a Grand Slam win in the Best Supporting Actor category for Dekada 70.

“That moment defined me as an actor. It really validated me and I guess ’yung pagiging recording artist ko, gan’on din. I would never have thought that I would sing and do almost 10 albums. It overwhelms me whenever I do a show and topbill a concert with a band or with an orchestra. I’ve performed at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum twice na. I’m really just in awe of everything that comes my way,” he says, his eyes wide with amazement.

The joys of fatherhoodOn the subject of his relationship with son Inigo, Piolo didn’t shy away from the topic.

Now 16, Inigo is growing up to be quite a looker himself.

When he first learned that he’s going to be a dad, what was his reaction? “I don’t know,” confesses Piolo. “It’s not something you plan, but I just broke down. Fatherhood wasn’t an overnight thing; I grew into it. I was only 20 then. I was really young and it changed me. As he was growing, I was also growing. As he was learning, I was also learning,” he smiles.

As a dad, he admits he’s hands-on and that he loves spending time with his son. “I encourage my son to go out, play outside and get wounded. That’s how they learn. You should never pamper, protect or isolate your kids. The more you pamper them, the less independent they’ll become. As a parent, you want them to stand on their own. That’s why I do this (living on his own). I want to feel that independence even if it’s hard sometimes and it’s so quiet. You want to be with someone, but you have to make do,” he shares.

Thankfully, Piolo’s relationship with Inigo’s mom is friendly and healthy. Piolo is therefore able to visit Inigo during summer or whenever Piolo has to fly to the US for work. Describing his relationship with his son, Piolo turns his “daddy” mode on and says, “We can be friends, we joke around, but of course there’s a sense of authority. You have to make sure he knows that, and that he knows his boundaries.”

Asked about the best moments he’s had with his son, the actor can’t contain his joy. “….When he sleeps, when we embrace, when he calls me ‘papa’ and shares stories with me, when we talk nonsense. These are things that are priceless. We also talk about girls. There are a lot of girls hounding him. It’s crazy! He’s a heartbreaker.

“I don’t just act; I also sing.” In between he does many other things. He could be shooting with a rain effect, from sunup till sunup the next day, after which he goes off to take part in an event—a fun run—then does a mall show.

“How do you juggle all these things and yet still be on top of your game? It’s hard,” admits Piolo. “Because you have to rest, you have to get some sleep too. It’s hard to do both at the same time. That’s why I’m saying I’ve mellowed a lot in the sense that I can have a day off and I’ll choose to rest instead of accepting something na mapapagod lang ako,” he says.

He even considers physical exhaustion one of the challenges he has to face in his career. “I guess ’yung pagod lang. When you have to appear on the set then you have to go abroad to work, you can’t afford to be sick. It makes me want to just rest sometimes.”

Beneath that formal and serious façade, Piolo can be like a little boy with a naughty side. He likes pulling pranks on people at home.

Mostly it’s American women (that like him),” he says with a laugh.

“He’s always been aware I’m an actor. When I was there (in Los Angeles), his friends wanted to meet me. His friends Google us and he shares stories about me. I think it’s nice because it means he’s proud of me,” he adds.

The teenager has already expressed his desire to enter the business as a singer. Is that something Piolo approves of?

“As much as possible, ayoko. He already told me that he wants to be a singer. He said that whether I like it or not, he’s going to join showbiz,” says Piolo, who said the same thing to his own mother, Mommy Amy, 20 years ago.

But Piolo struck a deal with Inigo that when the boy turns 18, he will be allowed to pursue his dream. “That’s why I want to spend time with him now, to prepare him and help him become more resilient when it’s time.”

Intimate InsightsIn all of Piolo’s years in the business, there is one thing that continues to draw people to him: his aura of mystery.

He is friendly even to strangers or fans that come up to him and ask for autographs or beg for a few minutes to have photo-ops with him—and yet Piolo has been able to successfully separate his showbiz life from his personal one. There’s a depth in those soulful eyes that only a few can penetrate.

He has learned to weave a web around himself, which he does by not being on social media. “It’s tiring. There’s no filter. It’s cruel,” he says. “I did Instagram for a couple of months because I was into photography. Then it came to a point na it was consuming me already. Even Facebook—I had one because of my family in the US. Then I chose to stop altogether. It simplifies everything.

I’ve always believed that what you don’t know won’t hurt you. Sometimes, it leads you to sin. I don’t want to sin with my eyes. I guess it’s a form of discipline na rin for me—for me to not fight back and to not think ill of other people and protect me from hurt.”.

Truthfully, social media can also be a source of vicious yet unverified rumors that often spill over to the real world. How does he deal with ugly rumors?

“Wala. It’s a part of it. I mean, you know, it can’t always be sunshine. It’s part of the deal. Ganoon talaga eh. You signed up for it,” he says, sharing his most private thoughts.

Despite the wicked side of showbiz, he intends to stay and isn’t bothered by the thought of slowing down.

“I’m very grateful for what I’ve done, what I’ve achieved and what God has given me, but I don’t mind slowing down. I don’t mind not being active anymore

and not being on top of my game. There are other things you can focus on and do, like settle down, start a family, have kids, do other businesses…life doesn’t stop.”

As he speaks of starting a family and settling down, we feel the excitement in the air rise.

“Well, that’s because I’m not getting any younger. I might as well start a family and see my kids grow. I don’t want to grow old alone. My mom’s been asking me also. I can’t wait. One of the reasons I want to slow down is because I want to be able to spend time with my son. I wanna be able to see him before he goes to college. When he’s 18, magsasarili na ’yan eh. I want to spend time with him before he becomes an adult.”

Would Inigo want to see him get married and settle down? “Yeah… it’s inevitable. He’s going to grow older and get married too, that’s what I tell him. He’s going to support me, and I have to support him.”

Piolo can feel himself already moving closer to that stage in his life. “I would like to (settle down)… by faith. Sana bago ako mag-40,” the actor says.

This month, he turns 37. We do the math in our heads—that ‘settling down’ just might happen, if his plans push through, within three years.

The missing pieceWhen pressed if there’s anything else he feels that’s lacking in his life, he playfully answers, “Maliban sa babae, wala eh. Lifetime commitment ’yun

eh. I don’t want to commit the same mistake of being with someone and you just end up breaking up. Kasi masakit din.”

Egged on to share what he’s looking for in a girl, he says, “That we have the same faith. She should love the Lord more than me. I won’t compromise on that. I have faith that when you’re there and serving the Lord, you can just pray about it, and He will give it.”

After a failed relationship with KC Concepcion and rumors of him going out with fellow Star Magic artist Shaina Magdayao, Piolo isn’t jaded about showbiz relationships and believes they can be made to work. “It’s a case to case basis. It doesn’t mean that just because you’re both in showbiz, it’s not going to work. It’s a matter of meeting in the middle and having the same goals. And you have to work hard for it. Showbiz—that’s my world. What can I do?” he asks rhetorically.

Piolo isn’t much of a kitchen person and usually leaves the cooking to Moi. However, he likes keeping all areas in the house, including the kitchen, neat and tidy. The household chore he specializes in is….washing the dishes!

Piolo keeps his choice and favorite items in the Makati condo including these stylish and comfortable Doc Martens boots.

In the same way that Piolo is excited about marriage and starting a family, he is equally excited at the prospect of growing old, saying, “I don’t fear it (aging). I’m excited about it. I’m excited to do other things. I’m excited to see my son grow, to see other places, have more time to train, have more time for rest, be with family and my loved ones…. just to discover life in general. Life doesn’t stop for you. You have to be like flowing water. You shouldn’t stop. You can probably rest, but you shouldn’t stop. You never stop growing, never stop learning, shouldn’t stop being good, asking God for forgiveness and thanking Him.”

He continues ruminating about his life, faith and spirituality and goes on to say, “I used to say ‘let go and let God’. But I guess the most important thing is to learn from your mistakes, pick up the pieces and learn to become a better person. Instead of knowledge, try to gain wisdom.

Wisdom is an application. If you have knowledge, but there’s no application, then you didn’t learn. I guess also the most important thing in a person’s life is the acknowledgment that there is a Higher Being in charge of everything and in control. It would keep you humble, knowing that somebody else is in charge, not you.”

It’s no wonder, that even in the highs and lows, joys and sadness, success and failures of his life, Piolo remains calm and perceptive—he has already submitted everything to the Bigger Boss out there and knows he’s in good hands.

The actor’s favorite area in the unit is the bedroom. Piolo, who sneaked in some solid nap time between the shoots, confessed that he loves sleeping.

Ruffa Gutierrez spent her seventh Christmas as a single mom in her new two-level, two-bedroom condo unit at Gramercy Residences, Makati. Since she marched out of her marriage with Yilmaz Bektas, Ruffa has gotten only stronger and better as a person while her daughters Lorin and Venice have also grown smarter as this year, they realize that they are blessed with so much love despite their parents’ split.

ruffa was about to guest on Buzz ng Bayan’s pilot episode in mid-October where the topic was marital meltdowns. The actress/TV host thought it was the best time to find

out how her daughters feel about the split today, six years since the three of them flew to Manila from Istanbul, Turkey. Ruffa, in a private exchange with her daughters that sounded like an engaging talk show, recorded her daughters’ thoughts on her mobile phone and exclusively shared the recordings with StarStudio. She had always been afraid of asking the girls these tough questions, because she was afraid of the answers she would get. But what Ruffa learned from her daughters was revealing; she got emotional, mature replies she did not expect. Most of all, she says she was surprised and proud to find that her girls have a clearer grasp of the situation than she gives them credit for. Here is what the girls had to say in that revealing private conversation: Ruffa: So the topic is: Nakakaapekto ba sa mga anak ang paghihiwalay ng mga magulang? What does that mean? Lorin: Does parents’ splitting affect our children? Ruffa: So what do you have to say about that in general? Lorin: Well, in my situation, my mom and dad split when I was younger so it’s easier for me to take that in because I didn’t really know what was going on. So now that I’m older, I got used to it more quickly. However, I think that when the kids are older, it’s going to be harder for them to take it all in because they already understand what’s actually going on. Ruffa: Do you remember your last few days in Istanbul? Lorin: I remember yaya was carrying me and I was crying... Baba was crying... and that we were going away from the house. Yeah, we rode the car and went to the airport. Yeah, I said goodbye to Baba and I was asking him where are we going?’

Venice: Oh I remember what I said to Baba when we were leaving, I said baby talk then I did this to him with my tiny hands and I only reached this part of his neck (she shows how she tries to hug her Baba) because my hands were very small.

R: Do you remember the time when Mommy told you that Baba was not going to be around anymore? Lorin: Yes... 2007. Ruffa: Yes I know. But remember I spoke to you in Boracay (in 2012). Venice: I remember what you told us in 2012 and then I started crying. Lorin said, ‘Venice, that was so 2007, don’t you remember?’ And then I said, yeah.

Ruffa: How does it feel now? So now, have you gotten used to the situation?

Lorin: Yes I have. In the beginning it was very challenging because it was a very big transition in life. But then, you understand what’s really happening and you understand how this is also better for your parents that way. And it’s your parents’ decision. So get used to it. And I’m used to it. Ruffa: How about you Venice? Venice: My turn. I’m not really used to it, mommy. Because in my birthday, he didn’t call me! He didn’t even send a thing!! I had a dream and I saw he was only eating pizza and popcorn on his couch watching TV! Ruffa: So were you sad? Venice: I cried for two days on the bed, mommy! Ruffa: So you still feel that a part of you is gone? Venice: Yes, because I do. Ruffa: Is there anything that would make you feel better? Venice: Yes, for him to come back. Ruffa: For him to come back and be with you... Venice: Yes. And [and be with] you, mommy. Ruffa: Okay, what about you, Lorin? L: Well it would be nice if he called once in a while. Or visited once in a while. That would make me feel better! Because he hasn’t called for months! And I don’t know when was the last time he visited but I think I was like six. Venice: You were four. Lorin: Okay, four. So it would be nice if he could visit or at least Skype once in a while.

Venice: I was in school and it was Father’s Day and we were told to write or say something about your father that happened two weeks ago. And I said (to myself), it was not really two weeks ago. And I had to lie, mommy!

Ruffa: Why? Venice: Because I don’t remember any part when me and Baba started playing with each other so I said he went to our house and he visited us and we played Bingo. Ruffa: Why didn’t you tell her (teacher) that you have a different, unique situation? Venice: I was too scared because she might think I’m weird. Ruffa: But don’t you have classmates whose parents are in a similar situation?

Lorin: There’s like one or two classmates whose parents are in similar situations. I have classmates who haven’t seen their fathers in a really, really, really long time. So yes.

Ruffa: So what do these classmates have to say about it, sometimes? Lorin: My best friend says that at the end of the day, we are lucky to have the blessings that we have. Ruffa: How about you? What do you consider the blessings that you have, Lorin? Lorin: To have a beautiful, beauty queen Mom. Ruffa: That’s it? Just being a beauty queen? Lorin: Well of course to have a lovely, loving Mommy who loves us very much and sometimes lets us eat ice cream. Venice: My turn. For me, the blessing is that we still have a family. It doesn’t matter if you’re complete. At least we have a beautiful mother and we still have a handsome father, smart father in your heart even though you don’t get to see him. But it still bothers me. Ruffa: Okay... Venice: A handsome father, a beautiful Mommy and a....a family! Ruffa: I remember when I told you that me and Baba were going to live apart for a while... Lorin: For a long, long, long, long while. Ruffa: Yes. I’m sure you were really sad after that. How did you deal or cope up with that situation? Did you just cry it out? Did you talk to someone? Is it still in your heart?

Lorin: Well...for a day or two I kept on thinking about the whole situation as I was crying and crying and crying. Then I realized after you explained it to me that I thought it back and then I realized your situation. And what it feels like for you and Baba. And then I realized that I am blessed to actually have the family that I have unlike other people who don’t have any family at all. (About Baba), I also knew that even though we are very far apart, that doesn’t mean that we are separated forever.

Ruffa: Did mommy ever say bad things about Baba? Lorin: (Thinking...long pause) Ruffa: Do you remember anything I said about Baba that was bad? As far as I remember, I never said anything negative about him nor criticized him to both of you. I’ve always said that he’s still your Baba, that you should love and respect him.

Lorin: Yes That’s true. You never criticized him even though you two have been through a lot. And I think that’s a very good example. Because you showed us that even if you and Baba aren’t necessarily together, you still love each other deep down in your hearts.

e very year, ABs-CBN marks the holiday season with a Christmas special in which practically all of its artists take part. The mood is celebratory and joyous, and the

party spirit is strong.This year, the network again held its

Christmas special, although this time there was a different tone to it. looking at helping out in the physical and emotional rehabilitation of the homes and lives of Typhoon Yolanda survivors, the Kapamilya network turned the annual Christmas special into an aptly-named Solidarity Concert: Kuwento ng Pag-asa at Pagbabago on December 10, 2013 at the smart Araneta Coliseum.

Aired as a two-day weekend special (December 15 and 16), the Solidarity

Concert was a toast to the triumph of the human spirit. In his message, ABs-CBN Chairman eugenio lopez III emphasized the role of shared responsibility, when he said, “Sana rin po ay bigyan tayo ng Panginoon ng lakas para makatulong sa pagbangon ng ating kababayan.”

The Solidarity Concert paid tribute to the Filipinos’ formidable spirit, as echoed by the message of the network’s president and Chief executive officer Charo santos-Concio: “Maging ang mga banyaga nga ay namamangha sa ipinapakita natin—ang mabilis na pagbangon, ang bumubuhos na tulong. Ito ang nagbibigay sa atin ng kumpiyansa sa kinabukasan.”

The spirit of solidarity was heard and felt in the moving music played by the ABs-CBN Philharmonic orchestra under

the baton of mr. Ryan Cayabyab. The tight harmony of the back-up chorale and the graphics-laden stage design made the Solidarity Concert a complete sensory experience.

It started out with an adrenaline-pumping musical number with Kapamilya music icons martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, sarah Geronimo, Bamboo, Vina morales, Angeline Quinto, erik santos, Yeng Constantino, mitoy Yonting and Jed madela taking center stage and belting out classics like ”Born is the King”, “Joy to the World” and “Handel’s messiah”, among others. With a line-up like this, the opening act surely ended on a high note.

Solidarity Concert—the meaning behind it, the inspiration behind it… the solidarity. It will be seen in our songs, in our brotherhood, in our [sense of ] Kapamilya.” Added mr. Pure energy: “I guess the word is solid. That’s what we all feel. We are all united in this. The network is just blessed that every artist knows what he has to do.”

And yes, the best and brightest Kapamilya stars were all there, taking part in a wide array of presentations replete with emotional overtones. Kapamilya actresses Judy Ann santos, Dawn Zulueta, Angel locsin, Angelica Panganiban, Bea Alonzo, Kim Chiu, Julia montes, and Jessy mendiola, among others, took their turns relating to the survivors’ poignant stories of hope and aspiration.

News and Current Affairs personality Korina sanchez and actor Robin Padilla reported stories of the travails, tears and the triumph of peace in the Zamboanga siege. KC Concepcion, on the other hand, presented a story on children caught in the midst of armed conflict.

The spirit of camaraderie, brotherhood and bayanihan spirit was also a recurring theme in the Solidarity Concert. Kapamilya male artists performed Tagalog classics that spoke of the solid ties and relationships that bind friends and Filipinos. Kapamilya female actresses and

Rocker Bamboo got the audience up on its feet and the other artists clapping and cheering when he gave a rousing performance of his hit song, “Noypi” which pays tribute to the resilient spirit of the Filipino.

The Divas (Angeline Quinto, Lea Salonga, Lani Misalucha and Sarah Geronimo) belted out classic and inspirational pieces, including a rendition of “Hallelujah”. Their number was one of the most applauded parts of the concert.

They were referred to as the “Tacloband”—the Reo brothers Reno, RJ, Raymart and Ralph. The brothers survived Typhoon Yolanda and joined the ABS-CBN Christmas concert, performing a medley of Beatles songs that earned them a standing ovation. After the concert, RJ told ABS-CBNnews: “Sobrang saya po. Hindi namin to ini-expect talaga. Grabe, sobrang saya.”

personalities, on the other hand, put a holiday spin on the celebration with their take on upbeat Tagalog Christmas songs.

There were also fun and feisty numbers that evoked the message of laughter as an innate Filipino trait and living a life full of hope and faith in God. Piolo Pascual did a rock poetry spot number with his take on the rock anthem “Posible”. It’s Showtime! hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis brought the house down with their memorable performances of Beyonce’s “Halo” and swedish House mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child”, respectively.

The show ended on a positive note with the haunting performance of the Kapamilya divas: sarah Geronimo, Angeline Quinto, lani misalucha and lea salonga. The divas stamped their impeccable artistry on their renditions of “Hallelujah”, “People”, “somewhere over The Rainbow”, “Bridge over Troubled Water” and “somewhere”.In all, the Solidarity Concert was a haunting concert experience; but more so, in ways behind the music. It was a hymn to humanity, in its truest sense.

Kapamilya hunks Rayver Cruz, Jake Cuenca, Matteo Gudicelli and Zanjoe Marudo performed the APO’s “Awit ng Barkada”, a song that expressed their own take on mustering the bayanihan spirit.

John Lloyd Cruz provided the audience with a glimpse of the many faces of laughter in the midst of pain, peppering his introduction with the witty repartee he is known for.

A stand-up comedy act preceded Vice Ganda’s emotional rendition of Beyonce’s “Halo”, much to the delight of the crowd.

Coco Martin joined the other Kapamilya leading men in the “Awit ng Barkada” production number.

Enrique Gil, Daniel Padilla and Enchong Dee not only thrilled the crowd with their performances but made sure to convey the spirit of brotherhood in their rendition of the iconic 80’s song “Kaibigan”. Fellow leading men Diether Ocampo, Richard Yap and Sam Milby turned nostalgic and emotional in their performance.

The young loveteam of Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo certainly put a smile on the faces of the typhoon survivors with their take on the Eraserheads hit “With a Smile”.

Teleserye Queen Judy Ann Santos, known for her generous and magnanimous ways, led the audience in a bittersweet tribute and remembrance of those who perished during the typhoon.

Anne Curtis put the audience in the groove with her song and dance number of Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child”.

Piolo Pascual captured the essence of the solidarity concert with his inspired rock poetry performance of the Rivermaya hit “Posible”, even taking off his footwear at one point.

The rain giveth and the rain taketh away, to paraphrase an old adage. The extreme weather we’ve been having makes a lot of people nervous when they hear a pitter-patter on their roofs nowadays, but we have to remember that the rain also gives life. We just have to learn how to live with it.

It’s true what they say: we don’t say “sorry”, “thank you” and “I don’t know” as often as we should. A thing I consider a flaw is that I don’t dance or sing as well as Justin Timberlake. Not nearly as well. Very far from it actually.

As a journalist I can make up outrageous

facts and have my friends believe them. Hehe. Men can breastfeed. Strange but true. Google it.

Once I climbed a tree and ate so much duhat (black plum) I was sick for days.

It’s embarrassing to tell people that I’m bad at spelling. Sorry guys.

A perfect day is reading a book under a big tree with the sun shining and a cool breeze blowing.

Number 1 on my bucket list is watching “El Clasico” (the name given to any match between Real Madrid Club de Fútbol and Futbol Club Barcelona) with my buddies in Barcelona.

Survival is an instinct that should be sharpened by knowledge and skill.

The thing I can do best in five minutes is procrastinate. I don’t get why some people take me so seriously.

Marriage is taking all of my friends away! Haha. Seriously though, it’s a huge responsibility but a beautiful thing. Age 35 is when it will be cool to wear glasses. Perhaps it will make me look more credible too.

PReSidenT’S SPeecHrespected and loved by her industry peers and the Kapamilya community, abS-Cbn’s president, Chief executive Officer and Chief Content Officer Charo Santos-Concio marks the month of love by sharing her thoughts on new beginnings, and how we can show love for others by inspiring them as they face the challenge of rebuilding lives

Family is my haven, source of strength, and inspiration. People are diverse, active, and heterogeneous. In the media business, we value and respect our audiences.

Waking up in the morning brings new opportunities. I look forward to another challenging day and hope to make a difference in whatever I do.

Last year has taught us solidarity. People can unite and come together to help rebuild people’s lives. The bayanihan spirit was so alive among Filipinos. Television is my life.

The one thing I’ve never truly understood is why some people never change or learn from their mistakes. Some people look for mentors to learn from, while others are not ready to listen and insist on doing things their own way, only to learn life’s lessons the harder way. Leadership is the ability to inspire people, create enthusiasm, and conquer fear.

The quality I prize most in other people is courage. In life, the greatest stumbling block is fear. Unless we face our fears, we will not be able to break barriers, achieve our goals, and make an impact. My guilty pleasure… Nothing in particular. I have learned to balance things and do things in moderation. It always amazes me when people create something remarkable from something seemingly simple. When I look back, I am amazed at what I have accomplished. When I was young, I enjoyed going to the movies and watching TV. I was just immersed in the world of storytelling and was fascinated—intrigued, even—by how it could inspire, engage, move, and change people. And I am now leading a multimedia company like ABS-CBN. We should remember that no dream is too big if one is determined to pursue the unimaginable. In a minute, I could create a story. Content creation is my passion.

Never underestimate people, even your own self. Never be defeated by fear or be intimidated by failure.

Trials have taught me to be stronger and prepare better. Trials have also taught me to love and believe in myself. When I want to relax, I read books and do yoga. The truth about me is that I am as simple as you can get. This new year means new beginnings for everyone. Our country faced tremendous challenges in the last half of 2013 that tested our physical and inner strengths. I hope the new year will be kinder and people will continue to care for each other like they did when calamities hit our country. I also hope the new year will be as good, if not better, for ABS-CBN.

The Kapamilya spirit goes beyond television. It lives in the hearts of every Filipino who loves his country and fellowmen.
