2007 TRACK AND FIELD
The eyes of Liberty Head Track
and Field Coach Brant Tolsma light
up when asked to discuss the
prospects for this year’s men’s
track and field team. “I feel like our
team could be very good at all lev-
els--in the Big South Conference,
regionally and nationally,” Tolsma
stated.
The Flames will have no short-
age of motivation to capture the Big
South indoor and outdoor team
titles. For one, Liberty was defeat-
ed by Coastal Carolina at the 2006
Big South Outdoor Track and Field
Championships, marking only the
second time in the last 13 seasons,
the Flames have failed to capture
the conference championship.
After the Flames took home the
Big South Championship in cross
country this fall, the team has the
chance to capture its first Big South
triple crown since 1999-2000, if it
can win both the indoor and out-
door team trophies.
Finally, the Liberty men’s and
women’s cross country and track
and field teams have combined to
win 49 Big South team champi-
onships. The next title will be num-
ber 50.
On the national scene, Tolsma
and his staff would like to send
more than four athletes to the
NCAA national meet this year.
Four Flames competed at the 1999
national meet, setting the program
record for largest representation at
the national level.
Juniors Josh McDougal and
Brandon Hoskins are each very
familiar with the national meet.
McDougal has captured seven All-
America honors between cross
country and track and field, and
Hoskins became an All-American
in the heptathlon at the 2005 NCAA
indoor meet. Both have an excel-
lent chance to return to the nation-
al meet, barring injury.
Three other Liberty athletes
have great potential to make their
initial trip to the NCAA meet this
season. Sophomore Jordan
McDougal seems poised for a
breakthrough season, as do junior
throwers Jon Hart and Clendon
Henderson. Hart is looking to
exceed the 200-foot mark in the
hammer, and Henderson is aiming
to go over 190 feet in the discus.
Junior Jarvis Jelen and Tim
O’Donnell and sophomores Markus
Greenleaf, Daniel Newell and
Matthew Parker are other Flames
who, with a very good year of
development, have the prospect of
qualifying for the national meet.
Sprints
Greenleaf enjoyed a stellar
freshman year in the 100 meters,
including a third-place showing at
the Big South outdoor meet and a
fourth-place effort at the IC4A
meet. Even better things are
expected for Greenleaf, also
included on the Liberty football ros-
ter, this season.
Ugandan Kevin Kalibbala, a
sophomore, is joining the Flames
this semester. Kalibbala, who was
a national champion in his home
country, has been hand-timed at
10.31 seconds for 100 meters, giv-
ing Tolsma high hopes for his
potential impact.
Football player Donald Manns,
a freshman, covered the 100 in
10.77 seconds in high school, and
looks to aid the Liberty sprinters.
Hoskins will also be a viable
option in the sprints, owning a per-
sonal-best 100 time of 10.71.
Liberty is hoping to break the
3:10 barrier in the 4 x 400 relay for
the first time in several years, as
the Flames boast excellent depth in
the event. Hoskins (47.96) and
sophomore, Philip Leineweber
(47.98) are the only two Liberty ath-
letes who have broken 48 seconds
in the 400, but junior Josh Gilreath
(48.19) and sophomore Javan
Carter (48.64) also have the poten-
tial to do so this season.
Senior Travis Campbell, soph-
omores Kalibbala, Newell,
O’Donnell, Parker and Oronde
Vassell and freshmen Chris Hibbert
and Jared Picard are other options
to run a leg in the 4 x 400 relay.
Hurdles
The Flames should be much
improved in the hurdle events from
last year, due to the addition of
O’Donnell. The transfer from
South Plains College owns person-
al bests of 14.30 in the 110 hurdles
and 52.01 in the 400 hurdles.
Parker was the Big South run-
ner-up in the 110 hurdles as a
freshman, running a 15.03 at the
event. Decathletes Hoskins,
Newell and junior Clarence Murray
will also see extensive time in the
discipline. Hoskins was the Big
South 400-meter hurdle champion
as a freshman, in a time of 52.77.
Mid-Distance
Campbell and Leineweber will
give Liberty a solid 1-2 punch in the
800 meters. Campbell, returning
from a redshirt season, is hoping to
improve on a 1:53.1 clocking.

Meanwhile, Leineweber was
the 2006 Big South runner-up at
the outdoor meet, running a per-
sonal record 1:53.47. Leineweber,
who owned a personal best of 1:58
in high school, was also third in the
800 at the Big South indoor meet.
Junior Kevin Correa, sopho-
more Matthew Gregory and fresh-
man Amos Mburu each look to
make contributions at 800 meters.
The 1500 meters and mile will
primarily be run by Liberty’s dis-
tance corps. Josh McDougal, who
ran the mile in 4:01.63 indoors last
season, hopes to become the
Flames’ first-ever member of the
sub-4:00 club. Jordan McDougal
and Jelen also aim to go well below
the 4:10 mark in the mile.
Distance
Led by the members of the
cross country team, which cap-
tured the Big South Championship
last fall, distance should be a
strong area for Liberty. Tolsma
hopes to send at least two distance
runners to Sacramento for the
NCAA meet and believes Liberty
can score some points in the dis-
tance events at the national level.
Josh McDougal is hoping to
add to his collection of All-America
certificates after earning a trio of
All-America distinctions during the
2006 track and field season. He
was fourth in the 5,000 meters and
fifth in the 3,000 meters at the
NCAA indoor meet a season ago
and placed ninth at 5,000 meters
outdoors.
Jordan McDougal looks to
build upon a 14:03.63 5K effort he
ran while finishing second to his
brother at the prestigious Penn
Relays a season ago. Jelen, who
enjoyed a stellar cross country sea-
son, is also set for a solid track and
field campaign.
Junior Drew Ponder heads
Liberty’s steeplechase competitors
after finishing as the Big South run-
ner-up in the event in 2006. Good
things are also expected of fresh-
man Josh Edmonds in the distance
events.
Junior Nate Edwards, sopho-
more James Doak and freshmen
Mburu and Jordan Whitlock will
add support, while sophomore Clint
Jackson aims to make a successful
recovery from off-season surgery.
Throws
Tolsma lists the throws as the
team’s area of greatest improve-
ment from last season. The return
of redshirt juniors Hart and
Henderson, who can both throw all
four implements, is the primary rea-
son for the improvement.
Henderson’s strongest events
are the discus (181-10) and the
shot put (55-5.75). Hart’s specialty,
though, is the hammer (193-8). He
could also post points in the shot
(54-6) and heaved the javelin 197
feet in high school.
Junior Steve Barrett (shot put,
discus and hammer), sophomore
Andy Bartels (shot put and ham-
mer) and newcomer Elliot Galeone
(shot put, discus, javelin and ham-
mer) will add considerable support
for Hart and Henderson. Galeone
has displayed significant promise
in the javelin, an event he is com-
peting in for the first time.
Jumps
Liberty is hoping to see signifi-
cant development in the jumps this
season. The team sports a crew of
young pole vaulters, including
freshman brothers, Justin and Matt
Savini.
Several athletes are expected
to contribute in the other jumps,
including senior Eric Lundy, who
was the 2006 Big South runner-up
in the triple jump outdoors. His
best effort in the event is 48-3.
Parker has high jumped 6-10
and has long jumped 23-1. Manns
should also help, based on his high
school personal bests of 23-5 in the
long jump and 46-8.5 in the triple
jump.
The decathletes promise to
contribute in the jumping events as
well.
Decathlon/Heptathlon
Hoskins, if he can shake a nag-
ging hamstring injury, could be one
of the best collegiate decathletes in
the country, according to Tolsma.
He advanced to the national meet
in the decathlon a season ago, but
was knocked out of the competition
due to injury.
Newell also showed he will be
a factor in the multi events with his
5,020 score in the heptathlon at the
season-opening Liberty Kickoff.
Junior Clarence Murray, the
Big South heptathlon and
decathlon champion last year, con-
tinues to improve, as do sopho-
more Matt Tarr and freshman Joel
Beck.
“This is the best decathlon
crew we’ve had in several years,
probably since 1999,” noted
Tolsma. The Flames sent three
decathletes to the national meet in
1999.
