TOGETHER AS ONE

Happy New Year to our readers and article contributors. Another fruitful year has come to an end and I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of our accomplishments.

In 2019, Texview turned 30 and we have seen how the magazine has evolved over the past few decades. Like time capsules of history, Texview covers are a mirror of our culture and values. In 2019, the Texview cover series featured the 3 focus areas under Quantum LEAP; Pride of Association, Transcending People Power and Building a Solid People Foundation. The final series of the 2019 cover is Together as One.

Other highlights in 2019 were:Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi and Puan Sri Atsuko Konishi turned 75Tan Sri Konishi and Puan Sri Atsuko celebrated their Golden Wedding JubileeDr Yuma Konishi’s appointment as the President and CEO of Polymer Engineering Division Wisma Texchem was newly renovated and refurbished Texchem was conferred Top 100 Asia’s Best Employer Brands Award 2019Texchem Aquaculture Myanmar Limited commissioned its first crab hatchery facility in LabuttaTexchem Malaysia ventures into latex glove chemicalSushi King MY mobile application achieves 500,000 members within 9 months of launch

I believe Texchemers have come together in many ways in 2019 but the most notable was when 320 Texchemers contributed to the Adopt a Kidney Patient fund and raised RM17,340! Many activities were carried out in 2019 by the Cultural Ambassador Committee, Texchem Ladies’ Club and Mt. Kinabalu Club. All of these activities are aimed at developing Pride of Association and Transcending People Power, but through different types of activities.

I would to express my sincere appreciation to my Editorial team for your dedication to ensure the smooth publication and delivery of Texview and to article contributors for your support throughout the year. As we move to 2020, let us all live by our shared values of Innovation, Competency, Accountability, Empowerment and Empathy. Let us continue to build a strong and supportive culture through communicating, showing appreciation to our fellow colleagues, driving more collaborations between departments and companies and together as one, let us make Texchem Group the best place to work and grow.

May the year 2020 brings each of us to newer heights of success!

President & Group CEO’s Message

YAP KEE KEONGPresident & Group CEO

Dear Texchem Family Members

Happy new year to you all. I hope you celebrated the start of 2020 in good spirits with family and friends. Now that we are a few days into the new year, it is good to look ahead and think about what this year may bring us. But first, a quick look back. 2019 was quite a year for all of us, with many developments, in sometimes less than favorable circumstances. Here are some updates on our business front.

Restaurant DivisionIn a rapid changing consumer environment, pursuing innovation continuously is imperative for our Restaurant Division. In 2019, the Division established its first Sushi King kiosk at Tesco Mutiara Damansara and continued to expand its online food delivery sales.

Moving forward, the Division will focus on menu innovation as well as improving outlet customer service.

Industrial DivisionThe Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) reported Malaysia as the world’s largest producer and the leading exporter of rubber gloves and the industry will see continued growth in 2020. Global demand for rubber gloves is estimated to reach 300 billion gloves this year, with an expected annual growth of 12%.

The Division continued with its efforts to grow its business in this expanding industry by working closely with our principals to develop customised chemicals as well as formulating our own in-house chemicals for customers in this industry.

PE DivisionThe Division continues to grow its medical life science (MLS) business segment which recorded a 15% increase in revenue for 2019. Starting its initial MLS production from its plant in Bangi under Texchem Life Sciences Sdn Bhd, the Division has since expanded its MLS business across all its plants in Penang, Johor, Vietnam and Thailand.

Food DivisionThe Division continued with its efforts to restructure its operations in Myanmar and Malaysia and has achieved a significant turnaround by posting a pre-tax profit in 2019.

The Crab Farming Operations in Labutta have achieved a significant milestone with recognition from the Myanmar Fisheries Department, Myanmar Sustainable Aquaculture Program and the European Union Ambassador towards Texchem’s promotion of Sustainable Aquaculture in Myanmar.

Venture Business DivisionIn 2019, Wilpack Food Services Sdn Bhd (WFS) underwent major renovations of its production facilities for its business expansion. WFS focused on developing customised and value-added products for their customers in the chain restaurant or retail food chain business.

Texchem Polymers Sdn Bhd continued to improve the formulation of TEXa, its bio-based polymer, and have participated in globally recognised exhibitions to promote TEXa as a solution for corporations intending to develop green products and have garnered much interest for joint collaboration.

While there are forecasts that 2020 will be another challenging year globally, no matter what the circumstances are, we must not lose sight of our priority, i.e, to be a strong and financially sustainable group of companies that put our stakeholders at the heart of everything that we do. That will only be possible with your continued dedication and teamwork, not only in your own company, but equally important, across the whole Texchem group. This means we need to work together as one to create a financially sustainable Group. Moving forward, I hope to see such group spirit demonstrated by all of us in our decision making; to evaluate not only what is best for our part of the business, but also the potential impact on other parts and on the Group as a whole.

The past few years have had a significant impact on all of us, and I would like to thank all of you for your support and dedication during these challenging times. The year ahead will bring its own challenges but I am sure by working as one, being positive, action-driven and being focused on our priorities, we can realise our ambitions. These will certainly continue to be my priorities and I know I can count on you as Texchemers to do the same.

Let us move forward as decisively and swiftly as we can in 2020, and together as a Texchemer.

Dear Friends:

All of us had been so busy in one way or another that we hardly take note of how fast the days had passed and by the time we realize it, another year has come and gone. Goodbye 2019. As in life, through many challenges, unexpectations and loved ones who suddenly left us along the way, what remains is the commitment and the faith to keep going. Enjoy this little flashback, as we recollect some wonderful memories in the past one year.

Mika, our eldest daughter copes well in Corporate Business Support Division, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities Co Ltd Japan. Apart from being a working mother, she manages to find time to attend to both of her school-going children, Shunsuke 14 years old and Rio 9 years old. Being the eldest, naturally she has adopted a more serious outlook in life.

Mari, our second daughter continues with her job at the Internal Audit Department, Inabata & Co Ltd, Japan. She was able to visit us in October for a salon concert at Villa Primavera, and the year-end was reserved for a vacation with us in Cote D’Azur and Monaco. A very happy go-lucky lady, she charms everyone with her sweet smiling personality.

Yuma, 41 years old is our youngest and only son. He keeps focused in building up his career in Texchem for the past 14 years. Constantly moving up the ladder, in July he was promoted to President & CEO of the Polymer Engineering Division. Apart from that, he also holds the position of Chairman in Texchem Life Sciences, Chairman in Texchem-Pack (PP) and Managing Director in Texchem-Pack (M). With added responsibilities on his shoulder, even twelve working hours is not quite enough.

Mikiko, our daughter-in-law splits half her life in Penang and Tokyo. Her teenage son Fumito (19 years old) is studying in the prestigious Tokyo Institute of Technology, School of Life Science & Technology. For three weeks in August, Fumito participated in the University of Cambridge’s Global Leadership and Cultural Understanding in English. This study trip in the UK further enhanced his learning experience in western society. Younger son Taiki (17 years old) is still boarding in Meikei Gakuen High School, Tsukuba, where he is actively involved in the Rugby Club and has represented Ibaragi Prefecture in their national high school tournament.

Executive Chairman’s Year-End Greeting

Atsuko, my better half as well as my pillar of support is still as fit as ever. She joins me for morning walks, enjoys holiday on land and sea, and return to Japan often to see her children and grandchildren. This year, she successfully hosted Atsuko Trophy, a bridge tournament in E&O Hotel for a group of keen players. Her other past-times like golf and social activities are to keep mind and body healthy.

Me – at 75 years old, I am grateful beyond words to be blessed with good health. I am able to stay alert and focused on whatever I do at work as my mind is still sharp. I continue to travel back and forth to Japan regularly for business meeting updates or any other new business proposals. Needless to say, I catch up with my children and grandchildren whenever opportunity permits as family time is of utmost important. A little weekend retreat to the countryside to enjoy fresh air, nature and hot-springs are life’s indulgence.

2019 Travels – During the long New Year holidays, we had the only chance to meet up with our second daughter, Mari for a short yet memorable ten-day trip to Roma, Firenze and Venezia. Our spring vacation was a special Greek Isles Fantasy 7-day cruise by Crystal Serenity. Atsuko and I celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary together with family members, ten in total. We sailed in the Aegean Sea, stopping for onshore excursions in Cyprus, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos and ended in Athens where we had time for a city tour including a visit to the Acropolis and Syntagma Square. In summer, we embarked on a river cruise on board Crystal Debussy to experience the Splendors of the Rhine. We sailed from Amsterdam to Basel, taking in the sights at Cologne, Koblenz, Speyer, Strasbourg, Breisach and ended in Basel where we extended our journey to Venezia to enjoy La Traviata opera at Musica Palazzo.

At Villa Primavera – We hosted 4 classical music performances as usual; in January Akiko & Friends, who performed a 7-piece chamber music. In April, The Kalashkov Family who came specially to perform a trio concert, themed A Lovely Golden Sunshine for our Golden Wedding Anniversary. In July for the first time we engaged a new soprano Svetlana Feodulova and Roman Arndt, tenor both from Russia, who gave an outstanding performance, themed An Evening Of Opera Arias. The last concert of the year was held in October when Sergei Glavatskih, pianist and Oleg Bugaev, cellist teamed up for a duo recital.

The Penang Japanese School once again organized their annual outdoor art competition at Villa Primavera for their enthusiastic junior high students in October.

The role of Villa Primavera as a favored venue for corporate entertainment continues from 1995. Over the period of 25 years, my wine collection in Cave 1 and Cave 2 reaches over 4,000 bottles and they are also my collection of memories as well, along with great acquaintance sharing the same thoughts and passion for food and wine. Gathered over a refined meal is a festive-like atmosphere worthy of the greatest tastings.

Texchem – The reorganization and restructuring exercises put in place last year and this year are bearing fruits, with the improvements seen in Food Division. Our venture into fish farming is yielding positive results. The operations of our Restaurant and Industrial Divisions remain positive while our Polymer Engineering Division is challenged by trends in the electronics industry. However, Yuma who is the Divisional CEO has been diversifying it to Medical & Life Science industry which has started its harvest now. As the US-China trade wars continue to take a toll on the global economy, we at Texchem continue to strategize and reorganize ourselves to meet the challenges and opportunities that may arise from this situation.

I look forward to another exciting new year and wish everyone safe holidays, good health and a joyous festive season. It is the time of the year to make new resolutions to change our lifestyles to lead a healthier and more productive lives. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year !!

It is the time of the year again to recognise our employees who have achieved an important milestone in their career. Our 10 years award recipients gathered at G Hotel, Penang for photo session and appreciation lunch on 18 November 2019. This year 57 Texchemers completed their 10 years’ service.

It was a memorable event, as the attendees had the opportunity to meet our founding Chairman, Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi in person. Our President & Group CEO, Mr Yap Kee Keong and Chief HR Officer, Ms Cynthia Ooi also participated in the event. Mr Yap was invited to deliver his speech before the attendees enjoyed their 8-course Chinese lunch.

Tan Sri Konishi added another feather in his cap.

On 13 December, Tan Sri was presented with an award by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries (MAFF) in Tokyo. Every year, five individuals from all over the globe are selected to receive such award, for their effort in overseas promotion of Japanese food.

Tan Sri Konishi’s contribution of Japanese food and culture took root in Malaysia since 1995, through Texchem’s restaurant chain, Sushi King, having 136 outlets today all over Malaysia and 5 more in Indonesia.

From 2007, new concept restaurants such as fine dining Miraku, and Goku Raku Ramen were introduced. In 2016 and 2017, Doutor Coffee and Hoshino Coffee were launched. He also played an important role in the development of Japanese food service industry, most remarkably in supplying Otafuku Sauce.

A great achievement for a Japanese citizen who lived outside Japan for over 45 years.

Around The Group

Article by June Cheang (Texchem Resources Bhd)

The last concert of 2019 at Villa Primavera was held on 19 October, themed “A Melodious Duo Of Cello & Piano” by Oleg Bugaev and Sergei Glavatskih. They flew in from Moscow and both are regularly invited by the hosts to perform.

Attendance was overwhelming, as apart from seasoned friends, a group of ten Japanese guests came from the Kuala Lumpur Representative Office of Ishikawa Prefectural Government of Japan, as well as the hosts’ daughter Ms Mari from Tokyo took the opportunity to visit her parents and attended the event.

After an immensely successful performance with loud applause followed by an encore as a special treat, guests proceeded to their respective tables to indulge in a fine kaiseki Japanese dinner paired with carefully selected wines.

There were plenty to catch up with, and it was still early to bid goodnight. After Dato Kee Phaik Cheen delivered her thank you speech which was close to midnight, delighted guests slowly made their way out, gratefully thanking their hosts for yet another wonderful and memorable evening of music, food and wine.

Message from pianist Sergei:

Dear Tan Sri,I just would like to inform you that our trip back to Moscow went on smoothly and arrived safely. Thank you once again for the wonderful possibility to play in your home, on the best grand piano I had ever seen. Oleg also wants to pass you his kindest thanks, he was really amazed by your hospitality. He is a wonderful musician and a very good friend of mine, and I am always happy to share concerts and impressions with him, especially when I see how happy he is. Please send our warm regards to Puan Sri.Sincerely yours,Sergei

A Thank You Note from seasoned guest,Mrs Nancy Neoh:

Dear Tan Sri Konishi and Puan Sri Atsuko,Thank you so very much for an unforgettable concert. Sergei and Oleg gave a most spectacular evening of the very best of opera and ballet transcriptions. Both are masters of their instruments. It was sheer delight to watch their magical fingers producing the most beautiful and exquisite sounds. The rich and exquisite sounds from Oleg’s cello was so well balanced with the golden, warm tones from Sergei’s playing on the Steinway. We cannot hear such a grand performance and program in any concert halls, so it was a rare musical treat.Thank you once again for such a delightful evening!Warmest regards,Nancy

In line with this strategy, Cultural Ambassadors (“CA”) were appointed in mid-2018 for Northern Region to establish programs and activities which would further Pride of Association and Transcending People Power to support building of positive, action-driven and competitive culture within the Texchem community. In early 2019, CA for Central Region was formed.

Pride of Association is a key anchor within the Quantum LEAP strategy. Employees who are proud of their roles and company are likely to stay with the company longer, are more engaged in work, committed to their organisation and more satisfied with the company as a place to work. Research consistently shows factors that are strongly related to organisational pride include giving back to the community, the believe that the organisation provides excellent products and services which makes them proud to work there, the organisation respects their employees, and employees who are optimistic about the future of the organisation and their own personal growth with the organisation.

Year-End Updates and Appreciation to our Volunteers and Contributors

As for Transcending People Power, the Management believes each of us has the ability to surpass ‘normal’ achievement, and to go beyond the range or perceived limits. The CA role is to establish the platform for Texchemers to shine by being involved in organising projects to enhance project management skills, learning new skills from participating in workshops or classes organised, getting Texchemers with transferable skills to teach fellow colleagues, providing avenue for staff to be mentors to others, and last but not least, providing all with opportunities to contribute to the society at large through volunteerism.

Based on the two charters assigned, CA (in Northern and Central) together with volunteers within the Group put together the following programs between October 2018 to December 2019, raising a total of RM32,365 from our generous colleagues. We are truly grateful and encouraged by the support shown to us! Texchem Resources Bhd matched this amount donated by Texchemers on a 1:1 basis. These fundings have enabled Northern and Central CA to carry out a total of 17 activities since their inception. Moving into 2020, the surplus funds contributed by Texchemers shall be used for more CSR projects.

The Cultural Ambassador Committee have been leveraging on our very own talents to organise Photography workshop, traditional cooking class, initiated a planting session, and collaborated with Sushi King to organise an enjoyable and popular Sushi Making Class for the Northern Region. Our own talented chefs in Central Region organised Home Cook Day and Breakfast Delight at Subang Office, in addition to a meaningful bag making class using recycled material which makes one rethink about trash and potential to put waste to good use. Without these activities, we would not have known that we had so many “home-grown” talents at Texchem! For this, we thank all the volunteers for putting so much effort and heart into helping the CA.

The CA also organised inter-company visits to develop Pride of Association. The visit to Texchem Life Sciences Sdn Bhd allowed Texchemers from other Divisions to understand the role it plays to facilitate the highly regulated Medical Life Sciences industry to improve health and quality of life, while visit to Wilpack Food Services Sdn Bhd educated Texchemers on the behind the scene operation to provide safe, consistent, high quality and tasty food products on a daily basis. Participants came away from both visits impressed with the many facet of lives which Texchem touches on a daily basis. We hope to continue with such visits in 2020.

We also thank Texchemers for completing our Volunteer Skills and Interest Survey which has allowed us to fine tune our programs to better cater to areas of your interest going forward. For Year 2020, we hope to organise one volunteerism activity each quarter and we request that Texchemers come together and share their passion and time through these volunteering programs.

Last but not least, we are pleased to welcome on board our two newest Ambassadors for Northern Region, Lee Khe Ching and Max Chin. Khe Ching, whom we fondly refer to as KC is from Texchem Food Sdn Bhd while Max is from IT Department, Texchem Corporation Sdn Bhd. Both their appointments shall take effect from 1 January 2020.

Once again, our deepest gratitude to all our colleagues, donors and volunteers for your support. The CA wish you a very happy and successful 2020.

With society becoming more environmentally conscious, bags made from recycled materials have become an important mainstay. With this in mind, Cultural Ambassador Committee – Central organised a class on how to make bags using recycled materials. Before we conducted the class, we had to collect enough recycled packaging materials which took a few months. Our colleagues from Wisma Texchem and Penang HQ also helped by recycling all their beverage packing for this purpose.

Hobby Club Formation – Handmade Bag

Finally we had enough materials and a class was organised on 19 October 2019 at Sushi King’s pantry at Wisma Texchem. The class was a 3-hour class with 16 participants. We got in a volunteer teacher, Ms Cheah Geik Kim for this purpose and she was assisted by our own Florence Chia from Texchem Materials.

Here are some of the handmade recycled bags made during the class:

Before the day of the class, participants had to quite a bit to do. Each of us had to wash, dry, cut and finally fold a minimum of 350 pieces of the packaging materials. It was a 7-step process to complete one piece of the material for the bag! However, please take note of the following important warnings!

** Can be super addictive. Once you start, you may find it hard to stop.** Please do not do this during working hours, you might end up with a warning letter.

By the end of the class, each of us have completed our own colorful recycled handbags. It feels good to know you’re using a product that was created from the waste of another. We hope participants who attended the class will continue this as a hobby and pass the knowledge on to anyone who is interested.

To know more about how to make such recycled handbags, please contact me at [email protected].

Getting to Know Texchem’s Recent Venture – Wilpack Food Services Sdn BhdTo understand the transformation of a food packer to Prestige Ready-To-Eat Food Manufacturer, Wilpack opened its doors to Texchemers to give a close-up view of Wilpack’s operations.

Factory visits to Wilpack Food Services Sdn Bhd (WFS) were organized by Cultural Ambassadors (CA) on 18, 20 and 21 November as 8 to 10 visitors per batch is ideal in consideration of food hygiene and to maximize interaction with factory person-in-charge at each operational section.

Willpack Food Services Sdn Bhd, formerly known as Sea Master (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, is led by Yuto Tago since 2018. It is a trading and food processor company within the Texchem Group focusing on seafood, beef and poultry. The products are processed and packaged under safe environment in accordance with global standards of HACCP and HALAL rules and regulations.

An introduction of the company profile was presented by Loh Hean Seng, Corporate Services AGM of WFS. He shared that Year 2019 was a big milestone for WFS because WFS completed all major renovations and new machinery installations which started from January 2018. In other words, WFS has successfully completed its business model conversion.

Food and worker safety are always top priority, and visitors are required to gear up with proper hygienic clothing and footwear before being allowed to enter the production floor.Texchemers were bought to visit production lines for egg, beef, salmon & roe products. Mr Loh gave us insight to the wonderful world of food operations and he explained the steps and procedures for each process and showed visitors to the newly renovated Salmon & Seafood and Beef & Poultry section.

Food tasting has always been the most interesting session as delicious and mouth-watering food was prepared after the production tour to give visitors a taste of WFS’s products. Items served include Tori Burg, Kimchi Salmon Flake, Saba Misoni, Chuka Kurage and Tamagoyaki.

Texchemers who joined the factory tour conveyed their enjoyment for the visit as they gained great experience and a deeper understanding of high standards in food processing, and a sense of pride for the variety of delicious and high quality food produced by a member company of Texchem Group.

Health Screening Campaign

On 19 and 20 November, Texchem Ladies’ Club engaged Pathlab to conduct blood test screening and female employees who signed up enjoyed the screening at a subsidised rate by their respective companies. The blood screening was conducted at Penang HQ on 19 and on the following day at Texchem-Pack (M) Sdn Bhd for a total of 121 participants. Pathlab also made a trip to those two venues to provide consultation on the health screening report to the participants. Overall the campaign was a success!

TLC would like to express our appreciation to the management for sponsoring your female staff and recognising that a healthy employee equals a productive employee. Knowledge gives us the power to take charge of our health. Remember, your health is your greatest asset and early detection can save lives!

Article by Ch’ng Sing May (Texchem Corporation Sdn Bhd)

Making time for a health screening is very important as good health underpins our ability to live well and enjoy life. With early detection and proper medical guidance, diseases and health risks can be treated and prevented.

First Aid and CPR Training CourseOn 30 October 2019, Texchem Ladies’ Club engaged the Malaysian Red Crescent Society to organize a full day First Aid and CPR Training Course for our ladies in Northern region. A total of 30 participants signed up for the course, which proved to be a great eye opener and by the end of the day, each of us have taken home many useful knowledge to address the different types of emergencies.

First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness or injury to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a plaster to a cut.

The trainer, Mr Yew Fei Yun started the talk by showing us a picture of an accident scene whereby 3 victims were lying on the road unconscious. A vehicle carrying hazardous materials was involved in the accident and containers carrying hazardous materials were around the accident scene. We were asked what we would be our first response upon coming across this scene. Most answered that we would call 999. However, as a First Aider, we would immediately be aware of the dangers involved and how to react fast so that we can make a difference between life and death for the victims.

Article by Lau Guey Peng (Texchem Materials Sdn Bhd)

We were also taught how to initiate first aid for choking, shocks, burns, fractures and dislocations, poisoning and fainting and how to initiate CPR and how to do dressing and bandages for fractures.

Mr Yew emphasized that when a person gets cardiac arrest, and with every minute that passes without CPR being initiated, his chances of survival decreases between 7 to 10 percent. Therefore, the immediate response to render to the victim is CPR which helps to prolong his/her survival time until the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) or ambulance arrives. The procedures for CPR can be summarized as below:

Danger – check surroundings for dangerous situations

Response – check for response from the victim and that the victim has stopped breathing

Compressions – Begin 30 chest compressions

Airway – Open the airway by tilting the head and lifting the chin

Breathing – Give 2 breaths by placing your mouth over the victim’s mouth and exhale

At the end of the talk, each of us were required to perform CPR on the dummy and sit for a written test. By passing this test, we shall be given a certificate and a card to certify us as a First Aider. It is definitely beneficial for companies to equip staff with basic life support skills as these skills will prove to be valuable at the home, workplace and community.

Ho Ho Ho! Christmas is just around the corner, the most wonderful time of the year.

Article by Ch’ng Sing May (Texchem Corporation Sdn Bhd)

On 21 December 2019, Texchem Ladies’ Club organised a baking class for Texchem ladies to learn baking Christmas treats to share with their loved ones during this festive season.

Ms Doreen from Fun Oven Pastry kickstarted the class by teaching us how to make chocolate chip cookies. Participants followed the recipe to make the cookie dough by beating eggs, weighing the ingredients and mixing them together. Thereafter, we scooped the cookie dough on to a tray and put it into the oven to bake. We could smell the wonderful aroma of the cookies once they were freshly out from the oven! Next, Ms Doreen demonstrated how to make swiss roll cake; it turned out to be more difficult than I expected. We made the swiss roll into a Christmas log cake by piping chocolate whipped cream over it. We decorated our log cakes according to our own creativity and as a final step sprinkled white powder on it, giving it a snowly feel.

At the end of the class, we got to savor cheesecake, snacks and pasta prepared by Ms Doreen. That was the time when we also got to know our colleagues from other companies. And not forgetting, each of us got to bring back our Christmas log cake and cookies to share with family and friends.

Let’s have a baking party!

Mount Kinabalu Club Bukit Kledang Hiking TripBukit Kledang hiking trip marked one of the activity of the club to explore beyond Penang, on 07 December 2019. The location is in the town of Menglembu half an hour away from Ipoh city, Perak. It is 800 metres tall with multiple trails leading to different parts of the hills.

The ‘Main Road Trail’ has been selected for our hiking route which is a 6.4 km upslope tar road from the foothill towards the summit of Bukit Kledang the home for communication towers that act as broadcasting stations for radio and TV networks in Ipoh.

Participants from Northern region gathered at Merieux Nutrisciences in the morning at 6:00am for departure to destination, with light breakfast in the bus The team met other participants from Central region after two hours of bus journey.

The weather of the day was good with sun and moderate humidity. Hiking began at about 8:30am, after a short briefing on safety and route to be taken.

Texchemers enthusiastically ascended the hiking track on tar road. The path started immediately at the entrance near the parking lot and continued in an upward, winding path. There were several gazebos that we could rest at and sheltered from the sun.

- ALTITUDE IS NOTHING -

The steepness was merely a routine for some of the participants who have been training regularly. Being physically fit, they manage to reach the peak in about 2 hours with pride. There were some sharp inclines that had been challenging but the encouragement and motivation from colleagues standing next to each other provided the power to keep going towards the end point, and that was the most beautiful thing during hiking.

While enjoying the good time spent with mother nature, most of our participants reached after 3 hours of hike. However, there were a few participants who missed the end point, but the team spirt and perseverance definitely deserved a round applause for their effort on trying their best!

As the weather getting warm towards the end of the hike with the heat, descending started after taking group picture at the peak where the communicating towers stand. The group started the descending journey at about 11:30am All participants gathered back at starting point for some rest.

The trip continued with scrumptious lunch at Restoran Mecca Towers in Meru, Ipoh for their best Nasi Arab and Kebab. Participants returned to their respective region after lunch that marked the end of our trip.

24 October 2019 – Villa Primavera hosted the annual outdoor event, even though it was during the monsoon raining season. This is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility to accommodate the Penang Japanese School for an outdoor art class. Adorable pre-teen 12 years old, all 22 of them accompanied by 3 teachers were extremely excited, the teachers enthusiastic and the hosts, even though busy, were eager to welcome them.

They arrived by a chartered school bus at around 08:40am, greeted fondly by Chief Caretaker followed by the gracious Puan Sri and then Tan Sri Konishi. By 09:05am, they had settled down with mats and drawing materials at the Gazebo surroundings, then spread out across the carpet grass to enjoy the clear blue sky and warm sunshine. The garden was properly maintained and manicured to minimize the presence of pests. The drawing began at 09:15a.m. From a distance, the children seemed affixed by the grandeur of Villa Primavera, staring with astonishment and started to imagine Villa Primavera and its surroundings in their minds, as they saw it and transferred their visualization onto the art materials. At times they do get lost but their teachers who kept a very close watch over them were quick to guide, motivate and coach them on the salient points of art, using their senses, artistic skills and imagination. Slow for some, nevertheless the blank piece of paper gradually showed vague images of the magnificent building, the splendid landscape and the captivating nature at every angle, all done in silence.

It was all about wholesome enjoyment, a fun day out and an edutainment endeavor for the children to instill into them a significant point, namely to respect nature and the evergreen standing structure, which Villa Primavera expounds to everyone all the time. With the timeless beauty of Villa Primavera, the children will learn to appreciate life for what’s worth in their own art piece. Only a handful completed their respective drawing due to time constraint, so they retreated with their images of Villa Primavera with the intention to complete back in school with the aid of photos taken by their teachers.

As the minutes ticked, it was near lunch time and by 11:45am, they packed their belongings neatly and proceeded to Sala Venezia for a delightful snacks of cream puff, orange juice and their own packed bento meals. The teachers explained the murals, 3D art drawings and grand painting in Sala Venezia that was inspired by Venice, capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region. Every detail was described; the stunning chandeliers, art décor and the inimitable banquet table that can seat at least 20 persons at any one time. Lunch was over by 12:20pm and they left the place impeccably clean.

It was photo-shooting session at the Terrace with the grandiose Villa Primavera as the backdrop. The teachers and children expressed their profound gratitude, bowed down in harmonized synchronization as a mark of respect to the affable hosts’ representatives, and the stately building that is a realized dream. At 12:30pm, the children and teachers took their leave and individually expressed appreciation to the helpers for the hospitality, and then bid farewell with sweet innocent smiles.
