Ruri Clarkson is an award-winning textile artist whose work has been exhibited internationally Her narrative work is genre-crossing and moves freely between contemporary art fashion and illustration Hailing from the corporate world she is also a branding specialist with experience in copywriting digital market-ing and localization for luxury cosmetics consumer electronics and zakkastationery industries

Running a small creative business for 6 years has given me the knowledge and comprehensive set of skills to propel several projects and products at once from its conception to the final physical outcome Budgeting schedul-ing public relations web marketing making and packing the product creat-ing contracts and maintaining relationships with clients to list a few Some of these skills were developed during previous work experiences in global corpo-rations

I have graduated with a Bachelorrsquos degree in Environmental Information from Keio University and continued to educate myself in creative skills through self- teaching and taking classes at Arts Initiative Tokyo Palette Illustration School and University of Hong Kong

Christmas Promotion Campaign - March to Dec 2018

Client sold 15000 units in China and Hong Kong

Valmont a global luxury Swiss skincare brand wanted to create a series of artwork that em-bodies the Valmont spirit The output included 4 bags 3 types of envelopes (not shown) and an original piece to display in their brick-and-mortar VIP spa

I crafted a story about a pair of curious scientists who are gazing through a telescope at the night sky atop the Swiss Alps entitled ldquoThe starry skyrdquo I drew each motif on separate layers and altered them according to the texture and dimensions of each bag

I provided direction and guidance on mass production of machine-embroidered bags turning in digital data thread and color samples to the client

Seitenbacher the German natural food maker wanted to create two artworks finished as can-vas bags that embody the culture and values of Seitenbacher This image was used as the main visual for a promotional event in collaboration with Are a cafe in Shibuya Cast

c Grand Front an upscale shopping mall in Osaka contacted me to create a fabric objet to use as the main visual for their New Yearrsquos Sale

7000 cards were sent out to VIP clients of SPIRAL (Wacoal Art Center) in Jan 2016 The artwork was added to the SPIRAL collection and exhibited most recently in Feb 2019 at SPI-RAL

Chromatope Series lt Original Work gt2018The Chromatope series is a collection of functional wearable art with a theme to ldquoliberate tradi-tional motifs from the weight of history and reintroduce them into the daylightrdquo

The products are sold through direct sales to customers at popup shops and our webshopWersquove had two exhibitions in Tokyo and one in Fukui prefecture during July - Dec 2018


The Mandarin Collar blouse is a versatile garment that compliments many body types with a varied surface design created by delicate cutwork and hand-embroidery

Lucky Pine Quilted Hand Bag and Backpack

This bag was born from the observation that there is a lack of ldquofunrdquo backpacks for women that can fit a laptop The embroidery depicts the energetic morning of Hong Kong I used soft leather at the bottom of the backpack and the zipper-pulls for longer wear



a Retro Art Canvas Tote Farm-themed artwork which I hand and machine embroidered on top of fabric paint stencils My finished artwork is assembled into sturdy canvas bags by skilled artisans of Tokyo

d Usagi Pour Toi a shop in Harajuku asked me to decorate their window during the month of July I made four embroidered jackets and created four paintings of the jackets being worn


Imposing Words lt Original Work gt 2013

I embroidered a word which causes discomfort in me such as ldquomotherrdquo and ldquohouse-wiferdquo at the center of the doily The super domestic look of the piece is subverted by the bold characters written on it which causes viewers to do a double-take

Entitled 悶悶WORDS in Japanese this series garnered attention from the media for bringing a visual language to feminism
