Comparing textbook prices saves moneyAllison Nash
I
Purchasing textbooks can be stressful, time consuming andexpensive. But doing some simple research on bookstorelocafions, prices and online options can help you go into the newsemester prepared.
Denton has four student bookstores that offer both in-store andonline check out for buying and renting student textbooks.
The UNT Bookstore on Chestnut Street, Voerknan's Bookstoreon West Hickory Sffeet, the Campus Bookstore onAvenue C,and Eagle Street and Eagle Textbook on West Prairie Street areplaces students can rent or buy new or used textbooks.
The bookstores are open year-round, and some offer differentprices for textbooks and carry university apparel and art supplies.
Students using the bookstores like their convenient location toUNT and the simplicity ofpicking up books in one trip and onone bill.
Some faculty members often post course syllabi -- withtextbooks and other materials spelled out clearly -on theirfaculty page before classes beg. This allows students to get ahead start.
Psychology freshman Kevin Ford waits to buy his books untilafter the first day ofclass, after he has picked up the syllabus andlistened to the teacher's instructions.
"My advice to incoming freshman is to checkthe UNTbookstore first to see how expensive the textbook is," Ford said."Then go online or to the other bookstores to compare prices."
Contributing writerSome students will have to buy UNT specific textbooks but
could have the option to purchase a cheaper online version."I give my students the option to purchase the hardcopy of
the textbook, which is $100, or to buy the electronic version for$60," political science professor Paul Collins said. "It makes iteasier for students who can't afford such an expensive textbook.Electronic copies can save you25 percent."
Many students use online resources and have books shipped totheirhomes in Denton.
"Chegg.com is a good website to purchase textbooks,"interdisciplinary studies senior Sarah Waller said. "They ship thebook to you within days, and sometimes the website offers youa temporary e-text until your textbook arrives, which is reallyhelpful when you need a book the day you order it."
Students can also sign up for the free Amazon Prime, whichovemights books to students.
But students purchasing textbooks online should also beaware that assignments may be due the first week of school, andbooks may not come as soon as students need them. So studentsshould prepare for this and pair up with other classmates to avoidmissing assignments.
The UNT Library also offers course materials to students if aprofessor has put a textbook on reserve in the library. This allowssome students to rent textbooks, but only if the professor hasallowed it and is in agreement with the student and library.
