    Textbook unit analysis

    1) Textbook

The unit is extracted from Interchange third edition series. The unit is taken from book 1for pre-intermediate students. I have chosen this textbook because Im already using it

    these days.

    2) Methodology

The textbook uses high-interest themes, for example this unit is about health problems

and giving advice on using different health care products. The unit integrates speaking,

grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing through various

activities that can be found in the snapshot(vocabulary), conversation (listening),

grammar focus (grammar), discussion/role play(speaking) as well as reading and writing

parts. Also, the communicative approach is obviously reflected throughout the unit as

the students notice the new grammar and vocabulary in context. Then they learn and

practice using grammar in the grammar focus. While they initially practice grammar in a

controlled way, students soon move on to freer group/pair work tasks.

    3) Objectives

The unit comprises two cycles or lessons. The objective of the first cycle is that the

students will be able to talk about health problems and give advice using infinitive

complements. In the second cycle the students will be able to ask for advice and give

suggestions about health care products using the modal verbs can, could and may.

    4) Things I like

I like the fact that the unit includes lots of visual-aids identified for the visual learners

particularly the snapshotthat presents the vocabulary for discussing the topic andprovides personalized guided discussion questions to relate to the students real lives.

Also, I like the conversation part because it includes pictures to set the scene and

illustrate new vocabulary as well as introducing the meaning and the use of grammar in

    context.

The activities in the unit are varied in terms of interaction patterns: pair/group work and

    whole class activities as well.

    5) Things I dislike

I dislike the fact there are no activities identified for kinesthetic learners like gamesetc.

Also, there is not enough practice on the newly introduced grammar.

    6) Conclusion

All in all, the unit is considered to be comprehensive, all the skills are integrated in a

communicative way that helps the student to practice the new language in context. Yet,

more identified activities for kinesthetic learners might be included ,for example instead

of asking the students to match the types of containers with words, I would show one of

the student a picture of a tube of toothpaste and ask him/her to draw it on board then

ask the rest of the class to guess what it is.
