The  theories  from  the  Bible  on  “The  Great  Flood’  and  ‘  the  formation  of  Grand  Canyon’  -­‐  Report  The  aim  of  this  report  is  to  relate  the  theories  from  the  Bible  to  modern  science  theories  on  ‘The  Great  Flood’  and  ‘the  formation  of  Grand  Canyon’  from  the  Genesis  narrative.  The  ?indings  are  based  on  the  information  from  the  Bible  and  the  website  which  creationists  have  written  about  history  events  that  occurred  in  the  early  time.

I  want  to  share  ideas  with  the  people  who  aren’t  yet  familiar  with  how  the  earth  was  created  and  what  events  had  shaped  the  earth  today  from  the  earliest  time,  even  before  the  human  civilization  set  up.  The  book  ‘How  the  world  began’  by  Andrew  Matthews  contains  bountiful  stories  told  by  people  about  how  the  world  began.    For  instance,  there  are  ‘seven  days’  and  ‘the  great  ?lood’  from  the  bible,  ‘Izanagi  and  Izanami’  from  the  Shinto  legends  of  Japan,  ‘Walking  man’  from  the  legends  of  the  Pima  tribe  in  Arizona  and  there  are  almost  countless  different  theories  told  by  other  tribes.  However,  for  this  report,  I  will  be  focused  on  the  Bible.  It  is  the  religious  belief  that  humanity,  life,  and  the  universe  are  the  construction  of  a  supernatural  being.  

In  general,  most  of  the  scientists  are  in  favor  of  uncovering  the  mysteries  that  were  left  unsolved  for  decades.  The  Genesis  creation  narrative  such  as  ‘the  great  ?lood’  is  one  of  the  examples  that  were  still  uncertain.  As  science  developed  today,  varieties  of  views  advanced  with  the  aim  of  reconciling  science  with  Genesis  creation  story.  Not  only  scientists  but  

also  people  will  appreciate  the  face  that  new  discoveries  from  the  Genesis  creation  tale  are  unearthed  and  proved  scienti?ically,  so  people  will  be  interested  and  encouraged  to  be  shared  with  their  ideas  in  that  area.

Anti  creationists,  the  evolutionists  from  the  Charles  Darwin’s  evolution  theory,  take  issue  with  the  theory  of  creationism.  Moreover,  the  theory  of  creationism  and  the  theory  of  evolution  are  the  most  endless  controversy  ever  in  the  world.  So,  many  will  not  be  willing  to  be  a  part  of  this  pugnacious  topic.

Even  though  new  facts  about  the  Genesis  creation  narrative  have  recently  come  to  light,  it  is  not  attractive  to  some  people.  However,  more  people  will  be  enthralled  by  the  further  new  discoveries  from  the  Genesis  story.

A  proposal  to  the  school

The   aim   of   the   proposal   is   to   suggest  the   raising   of   funds   to   set   up   new  classes   in  Bandung.  In  these  classes,  we  are   going   to   share   ideas   which  creationists   believe   that   the   theories  from   the   Bible   are   related   to   the  signi?icant   occurrences  such  as   Ice  Age  or   the   formation   of  Grand  Canyon.  We  would   appreciate   receiving   grants   to  cover   the   cost   of   travel   to   Bandung.  Living  costs  will  be  met  by  fund  raising  activities   that  we  are  arranging  during  family  fun  fair.

The  missionaries  sent   invitations   to  us  to   visit   Bandung  and  share   ideas  with  the   students   about   the   applications   of  b ibl ica l   s tories   on   the   Earth’s  signi?icant   events.   Even   though  Indonesia   is   Islamic   country,   Bandung  has   a   relatively   large   number   of  Christians.   So,   missionaries   hope   to  fortify  the  Bandung’s  people’s  Christian  belief   and   share   more   ideas   from   the  theories  of   the  Bible.  But,  there  are  not  enough  missionaries   in  Bandung.   They  need  help.

It   is   envisaged   that   the   people   of  Bandung   will  bene?it   from   the   classes  in  a  several  ways.  First   of  all,  they  will  learn   the   applications   of   the   theories  

from   Bible   on   the   Earth’s   major  incidents,   as   this   is   one   of   the   main  tasks  for  the  group.  Secondly,  the  trip  to  Bandung   will   enable   the   people   in  Bandung  to  develop  new  friendships.

For   the  students  who  attend  the  trip,  it  will  be  a  precious   learning  opportunity.  The   students   will   be   engrossed   in   all  parts   of   scheduling   and   organization.  What’s  more,  their  public  speaking  can  be   enhanced   because   they   give  presentations.   Moreover,   the   trip   to  Bandung  will  bene?it   the   students   as   it  will  engender  a  vast  amount  of  interest  in  Bandung  and  its  people.

This   trip  will  be  a   unique  opportunity  for  students,  and  it   is  fortunate  that  we  are   able  to   have   a   contact   in  Bandung  who   invites  us  and  gives  us  a  chance  of  setting   up   classes   for   Bandung’s  people.  It  will  afford  all  concerned  with  a  vital  educational  experience.

The Noah’s Great FloodI found the Bible contained plenty of fascinating historic stories. The stories left some scientific mysteries like a connection to the todayʼs the Earthʼs formation. Thatʼs the thing what makes me really captivated. Among the stories in the Bible, a hilarious story called ʻ The Great Floodʼ in the Genesis is the best one for me.

When God noticed that the Earth is corrupted and filled with violence through people, God decided to make an end of all living things. By summoning an enormous flood of water upon the Earth, God would destroy all the fresh in which was the breath of life on the Earth. Then, everything on the Earth would be vanished and gone. However, there was an exception. God told Noah who was a virtuous man and blameless in his generation to built himself an ark with his family. So, he and his family could be safe from the flood. Moreover, God would send all the animals on the Earth and commanded Noah to bring two different sexes of every kind of animals into the ark in order to keep them alive from the flood. Righteous Noah did all that God commanded him without any of complains.

Before Iʼd gone thorough this story. I thought Titanic was the most enormous

ship ever on the Earth. But, there was much bigger ship constructed in the Genesis. The Noahʼs Ark was about 450 feet long by 75 feet in beam and 45 feet high. This ark would displace 20000 tons and had a gross tonnage of 14000 tons. In the ark, there were three decks, an 18 inches high window running around the top of the ark under the roof and one door in the side. Even though the ark is incredibly gigantic, many people didnʼt believe whether it was possible for the ark to maintain thousands of species or not. According to Dr. John Morris, the capacity of the Noahʼs ark was about 522 cars, and only 188 cars would be required to carry a pair of each of the 17600 species of animals. Whatʼs more, a lot of scientists were curious about the animals in the ark. This is because thousands of animals are impossible to be taken care with a few people. However, other scientists said that it was possible the animals hibernated most of the days in the ark.

Furthermore, as I mentioned in the first paragraph, the biblical stories such as ʻThe Great Floodʼ left numerous mysteries that might be the clues for how the Earth formed like today from ancient and the clues for what global occurrences happened to the Earth. For instance, ʻThe Great Floodʼ can tell the formation of continents around ʻThe Grand Canyonʼ.

God  created  the  heaven  and  earth  in  the  beginning.  On  the  First  day  of  the  earth,  God  summoned  the  light,  and  God  segregated  the  light  into  brightness  and  darkness.  Then,  he  called  the  brightness  as  the  daytime  and  called  the  darkness  as  the  nighttime.

On  the  Second  day,  God  said  ‘let  there  be  a  blue  sky’,  then  the  waters  separated  into  two  places,  above  the  blue  sky  which  was  gaseous  water  atmosphere  and  below  the  blue  sky  which  was  ocean.

On  the  third  day,  the  dry  grounds  appeared  and  the  ?irst  plants  were  created  to  grow  in  immense  abundances.  After  that  God  distinguished  plants  in  three  types.  The  plants  that  had  a  blade  of  grass  called  grass,  the  plants  which  went  to  seeds  called  vegetables  and  the  plants  that  bore  fruits  called  trees.

On  the  Fourth  day,  God  told  the  light  frames  to  be  the  sun,  moon  and  stars,  and  they  became  visible  through  the  blue  sky.  

They  were  to  serve  as  signs  to  mark  seasons  and  days  and  years."  The  sun  marked  the  day,  the  moon  the  month,  and  the  stars  the  seasons.    

On  the  Fifth  day,  God  created  vast  numbers  of  birds  and  sea  creatures.  God  said,  "Be  fruitful  and  increase  in  number  and  ?ill  the  water  in  the  seas,  and  let  the  birds  increase  on  the  earth”.

On  the  Sixth  day,  numerous  numbers  of  land  animals  are  created.  Then,  God  made  the  ?irst  Man  and  woman,  Adam  and  Eve.  

On  the  seventh  day,  God  had  ?inished  the  work  He  had  been  doing,  so  God  rested  from  all  His  work.  The  He  blessed  the  seventh  day  and  made  it  holy  day

DIARY REFLECTION AND RESEARCH LOG

For  the  project,  I  researched  the  topic  of  interest  to  me,  the  theories  from  the  Bible.  But,  the  project  had  a  strict  rule.  Our  topic  must  keep  an  English  based  perspective  to  it.  Anyway,  I  wrote  ?ive  text  types.  The  ?ive  text  types  are  report,  blog,  proposal,  creative  and  the  diary  re?lection  what  I  

am  writing  now.  First  of  all,  for  the  report,  I  reported  what  was  so  hilarious  about  my  topic  to  the  people  who  didn’t  know  much  about  the  theories  from  the  Bible.  What’s  more,  I  mentioned  about  what  educational  bene?it  my  report  had.  Secondly,  I  explored  a  fascinating  aspect  of  my  topic  in  my  blog.  I  contained  the  story  of  ‘The  Great  Flood’  because  I  found  it  really  interesting.  Thirdly,  one  of  the  missionaries  sent  me  an  invitation  from  Bandung.  By  taking  this  opportunity,  I  planned  to  propose  the  classes  about  the  theories  from  the  Bible  to  the  students  in  Bandung.  Finally,  for  the  creative  part,  

I  created  a  poem  that  suited  my  topic,  which  was  ‘the  seven  days’.  Now,  I  will  tell  more  about  my  re?lection  on  the  log.

Reflection

What I hoped to learn initially

I  hope  to  learn  how  the  theories  from  the  Bible  relate  to  the  scienti?ic  theories  on  the  formation  of  the  Grand  Canyon.  The  Grand  Canyon  is  one  of  the  astonishing  and  mysterious  objects  in  the  world,  and  has  sheer  sharp  cliffs.  A  lot  of  scientists  are  seeking  to  ?igure  it  out  where  it  comes  from  and  how  it  builds  up.  

What did I learn

I  found  that  one  of  the  stories  in  the  Bible  possibly  caused  the  Grand  Canyon  to  be  formed  throughout  researching.  It  was  ‘The  Great  

Flood’,  one  of  the  Genesis  narratives’,  which  constructed  the  Grand  Canyon,  and  it  was  called  catastrophism.  Moreover,  I  found  another  theory  that  differed  to  the  theory  from  the  Bible,  the  uniformitarianism.  Thus,  by  comparing  those  two  enormous  theories,  I  was  able  to  learn  about  the  formation  of  the  Grand  Canyon  from  different  theories.

What questions remained

unanswered

The  thing  that  still  perplexes  numerous  scientists  is  the  happening  after  ‘The  Great  Flood’  

occurred.  According  to  the  creationists,  the  weather  instantly  has  changed  then  the  ice  age  arrives.  However,  what  the  creationists  say  gets  biased  from  other  scientists,  and  it  turns  out  to  be  controversial  issue.

Why

This  is  because  the  shortcoming  of  evidences  can’t  satisfy  non  creationists  to  accept  what  the  creationists  have  stated.
