a a a and birthday birthday cake cake carrot chocolate didn't ever first getting have him husband's I I I I I I’m is it it it Lent long longer lot made made month more my now realise six six started than that that the think this to used was was was wasn't weeks weeks when yesterday

This text should really look like this:

I didn't realise when I started this that Lent was six weeks long. Six weeks is a lot longer than a month. I think I'm getting more used to it now. It was my husband's birthday yesterday and I made him a carrot cake. It was the first birthday cake I have ever made that wasn't chocolate.

Note the use of the past tense ‘didn’t’, ‘started’

The first person ‘I’ is used a lot

Specific person referred to: ‘husband’

Mention of reactions/feelings: ‘realise’

A diary or recount text

References to time: ‘yesterday’

a after all always and and and ate be be beautician beautiful been bit breath brown but chocolate chocolate complexion eating expanding fatal get go go have how it its just lack lips local lumps make matter may may may me mention mistake need no not nutrition of out rot sick smelly smooth spots swallowing sweet teeth that that to to to to turn ugly visit waistline will will will will will will with you you you you you your your your your your your your

This is tricky!

There are clearly adjectives here: ‘beautiful’, ‘fatal’

The use of the second person ‘you’ may mislead you.

There are some powerful, evocative words used – ‘smelly’, ‘ugly’,This text should really look like this:

Swallowing that chocolate you just ateMay have been your fatal mistake!

Your smooth complexion will get lumps and spots,Your lips will go brown and your teeth will all rot.

Your breath will go smelly - it may make you sick,Not to mention your waistline expanding a bit!

After eating that chocolate with its lack of nutrition,You will need to visit your local beautician.

But no matter how ugly you may turn out to beYou will always be sweet and beautiful to me.

The present participle, e.g. ‘expanding’, ‘eating’, shows something happening and ongoing.

The content should give this away – ‘bowl’, ‘microwave’

It doesn’t seem to matter if the same word is repeated, ‘melt’,

The second person ‘you’ and the third person ‘it’ are both used.

The present participle – e.g. ‘melting’ – is used to show something happening

This text should really look like this:

Break the chocolate up into a microwaveable bowl (if you don't have a microwave, then use a heat proof bowl and put it over a pan of simmering water). Add the evaporated milk, then melt at full power for 1 minute. Stir it, then melt again for 30 seconds. Repeat the stirring and melting times until it is fully melted. You can then transfer it to your fondue set.

Just dip the pieces of fruit in the chocolate, and enjoy!

A recipe (instruction text)

You might spot command verbs (imperatives) – ‘add’, ‘put’

Note the temporal connective ‘then’ used

and and are birthdays buttery can centres chocolate creamy dipped especially for gift in irresistible juicy lemon light lime make melt most natural orange parties perfect raspberry real resist rich ripe senses special strawberry summer's sweet the the to treats truffles when white who your zesty

So this text must be ….

an advert

It should persuade the readers

It should tantalise the readers and win them over

It will use strong, positive language.

It may make the reader feel better/happier.

It will make the reader feel as though everyone likes this product.

So now you write the advertisement. First of all, you’ll need to decide what it’s for!
