April Meetings
Our 4-H Club Business Meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, April 14th
2015 @ 6:00 at the expo.
The 4-H Shooting Sports Club will
meet on Tuesday, April 28th @ 6:30
at the Holiday Inn Express.

Record Book Workshop! At our April business meeting, Laura Huebinger will be conducting a record
book workshop! The information Laura will be presenting will be beneficial
to parents as well, so parents will meet with the kids for this portion of the
meeting. This is a great opportunity get a start on your record book. You
won’t want to miss this one!
Photos Be sure to take pictures of you and your project and/or team practic-
ing or competing. Send them to us and we’ll put them on our
webpage. This will allow us to let the community know what we’re
up to, and you’ll have great pictures for your Record Book!
Leadership Lab Leadership Lab is held annually in June and 4-H members from ages 13-18 may attend. This
event provides a variety of leadership, recreation, and project enhancement workshops that
participants are challenged to take back to their own county and implement. Entries will be
due by May 12th!
Leaders 4 Life Leaders 4 Life Skill-A-Thon is a competitive event designed to challenge county 4-H
Council teams in their leadership skills, parliamentary procedure, and service learning. The
contest will be April 30th in Belton and entries are due to our office by April 13th. Click

Save the Date! Horse Camp will be June 1-3. More details are coming! If
you’d like to participate in the Horse Camp planning committee,
we will hold our first meeting April 1st at 5:30 pm at the Exten-
sion Office.
2015-2016 Officer Elections We will be electing officers for the new 4-H year during the May Meeting. This is a great way
to learn leadership skills. If you’re interested in running for office, make sure you pick up an
officer handout, prepare a quick speech on why you would be perfect for the job, and come
prepared to show what you’ve got in May!
2015 Texas 4-H Gold Star Award
What is it?
The Gold Star Award is the highest county achievement award and will be awarded only once
in a member’s 4-H career. The award is presented to the most deserving young people without
regard to sex. Somervell County may award 2 Gold Star Awards to senior 4-H members ages
15-19.
Minimum Requirements:
1. The member must be at least 15 at the time of application and must have completed at least
3 years in 4-H, including the current year.
2. The 4-H member MUST SUBMIT AND AWARDS PROGRAM RECORDBOOK in the
year he or she is to be considered for the award.
3. The 4-H member must have completed projects in three different project areas, have sub-
mitted appropriate record forms, and have participated n one or more activities in at least
three of the following areas:
Educational Presentations
Citizenship activities
Projects
Project Exhibits
Camps
Leadership labs
Public relations (speeches, poster displays, radio, TV, newspapers)
Other (include exchange programs, fundraising, State and National Congress, etc.)
4. The member must have exhibited leadership skills by serving as a 4-H officer or committee
chairman, and/or as a junior or teen leader in an activity or project with or under the super-
vision of an adult volunteer leader.
5. The 4-H member must have participated in one or more community service activities.
Note: The requirements for projects and activities do not all have to be completed in the cur-
rent year. They may have been accomplished over the entire period of time the person has
been in the program.
It is never too early to start working on these awards!!!

LIVESTOCK UPDATES
Spring Heifer Validation Anyone planning to show heifers at major shows this year will need to place UIN orders by
April 15th! Heifers validated last fall will not be required to validate in subsequent validations
or years. A heifer will only be validated once in her show career unless there is a change in
ownership or the exhibitor wishes to change the validated heifer’s breed. Please call us if you
have any questions.

District 4-H Horse Show ~ June 15-16
State 4-H Horse Show ~ July 18-25
State 4-H Horse Show We have received information regarding the State 4-H Horse Show. This year it will be
held July 18-25 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, TX. Click here to view
the rules and regulations. You can also view the schedule of events here.
The District Show is June 15-16, registration will be due by May 22nd.
Livestock Ambassador Program The Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador program strives to provide high
school aged 4-H members the opportunity to develop and practice ad-
vanced leadership skills related to mentoring other youth, and to be-
come advocates for animal agriculture. Classes will be held at Texas
A&M July 20-24 and at Texas Tech July 7-10. For more information
and to apply to this program click here. Entries are due June 1st.
Equine Ambassador Program The Texas 4-H Equine Ambassador program strives to provide high school
aged 4-H members the opportunity to develop and practice advanced lead-
ership skills related to mentoring other youth, and to become advocates for
the equine industry in Texas. Camp dates are June 28 - July 2 and the cost
is $200. For more information and to apply to this program click here. En-
tries are due May 1st.
LIVESTOCK UPDATES
4-H Scales & Clippers The 4-H program has scales to weigh your animals and clippers to
clip them, also. If you would like to use these items, you may check
them out from the office. We ask that you return them in 2 days so the
next person can use them. There will be a $10 refundable deposit and
a $10 rental fee in order to rent the clippers. Please be sure to return
the clippers clean and ready for the next person to use.
Livestock Judging Practice The District Livestock Judging Contest will be April 25th in Col-
lege Station. The deadline to register is April 6th on Connect.
2015 State Fair of Texas Lamb & Goat Validation If you plan on showing lambs or goats at the State Fair this year, it’s time to
place your tag orders. Tags will cost $15 each and will be due by April 8th.
You must fill out and return this tag order form along with payment to order
tags.
2015 Horse Validation If you plan on showing at the District or State Hose Show this year, you MUST validate a
new horse or re-validate one that has been previously validated in 4-H Connect.
The Validation Period is: March 1 - April 15th for $10 per horse; April 16th - May 1st for
$20 per horse. Click here for validation instructions.
2015 Steer Validation Tags will cost $15 each if ordered by April 16th. You may place orders until May 21st for $25.
No orders will be taken after May 21st. You must fill out the tag order form at the back of this
newsletter and return it to the Extension Office to order your tags. Remember: ordering a tag
does not enter you for any show!

Extra-Curricular Activities & 4-H Eligibility
As an educational agency, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service supports the Texas Education code
and academic responsibility of student 4-H members. The Extension sponsored 4-H youth programs must
comply with provisions of the Texas Educational Code in order for the 4-H program to maintain status of an
extracurricular organization.
When 4-H members participate in competitive events or when a member is participating in any 4- H
event that will require him/her to be absent from school, the Extension Agent must submit a written
request to the appropriate school official prior to the activity. The school will determine if the students
are eligible for participation and notify the agent. If parents have any questions they should contact the
school administration.

Spring Contests
The first round of Spring contests has district competitions in March. The second round of con-
tests fill up the month of April, bleeding over into May. Below are some of the
projects/contests offered in the Spring. You can find out more about these projects on the Dis-
trict 8 4-H website: http://d84-h.tamu.edu. If any of these interest you as a 4-H’er or adult
volunteer, please contact Zach or Brianne. We are happy to assist in any projects a 4-H’er
wants to do, but it takes adult leaders & volunteers to help us make it happen.
Nutrition Quiz Bowl Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: March 7th The Quiz Bowl involves teams of three or four members. Two teams
compete against each other at one time, answering questions related to
nutrition, food safety, dietary guidelines, food preparation, food
preservation, MyPlate, health, and consumer information with the use
of an electronic buzzer system.
Consumer Decision Making Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: March 7th Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids
to observe, compare and make consumer based decisions based on
facts. Teams of 3-4 members individually use their consumer
knowledge to rank similarly based products to fit a given scenar-
io. Kids learn to organize their thoughts and to defend their decisions
in oral reasons.
Horse Judging Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: April 11th
Teams of three or four members individually evaluate mul-
tiple classes of 4 horses for composition and performance.
Teams all compete at once, judging the same sets of clas-
ses. Both age groups give oral reasons on a specified num-
ber of predetermined classes.
Entomology Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: March 16th
The entomology project familiarizes youth with the insect
world by studying, collecting and identifying various in-
sects. Individuals or teams of 3-4 members individually
identify insect specimens by scientific name.
District Rifle Contest Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: May 2nd, 2015
The District Rifle Contest is a competitive shooting contest
with several different categories Seniors can qualify for
State at the Texas 4-H Roundup.
Livestock Judging Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: April 25th
Livestock judging is the process of evaluating, selecting,
placing, and learning the various livestock
species–cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Judging is the foun-
dation of any 4-H livestock project.
Range & Plant ID Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: April 10th
The range science project develops knowledge and skill in
practical range and ranch management. The Plant ID contest
familiarizes 4-H’ers with native pasture plants & grasses.
Teams of 3-4 compete individually judge scenarios and
identify plant specimens.
Leaders 4 Life (Parli. Pro) Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior
District Contest Date: April 30th
The Leaders 4 Life Program provides resources to equip
clubs in conducting high quality leadership training,
parliamentary procedure training, and service
learning activities.
