THERE IS FEAR IN THE LAND v1

•Words went round that Jordan gave way.

•They had known that Jordan was their defense and is gone.

•Now the people have entered the Land of Promise.

•The Amorites king and the Canaanites kings were afraid.

CIRCUMCISION – OBEDIENCETO GOD

•Circumcision was Gods idea from the beginning. Genesis

17:9-12.

•Sign of covenant between God and Abraham.

•Obedience is always painful

•The Israelites were to go through it painful as it was.

Joshua 5:2-3

•This caused a delay and it was for a purpose.

(I remember my 6 years of painful obedience 1973-1980)

– God removed me from regular pay because he called me out.

– Stripped me materially.

– Locked me in prison for preaching when I was a theological

student.

(All these for me was the divine delays.)

•The Israelites remained in one place until they were healed. v8

•God took away their reproach in this place called Gilgal.

THE PASSOVER - A SIGN OF HUMILITY v10

•First God humbled Pharaoh after the first Passover. Exodus

12:6-13

•It began with the slaughter of an animal whose blood was pit on

the door post.

•They were to eat the meat roasted with unleavened bread.

•God sent His angel who killed all the Egyptian first born.

•Today this meal is meaningful in the Promised land.

•Jesus ate this meal before He too went to the cross where He

humbled Himself.

THE DIVINE COMMANDER v13-15•This is time for Joshua to surrender

•He saw a man with a drawn sword

•Joshua met the warrior because he too was a warrior unlike Moses the shepherd.

•Joshua challenged the warrior to take sides but he was neutral.

•I'm the commander of the Lords army and I have now come. v14

•The message to Joshua was similar to what Moses experienced- remove your sandals.

NOW JERICHO MUST FALL. CHAPT.6•God said to Joshua I have delivered Jericho into your hands. v1-2

•March around the city- this is Gods way of doing things. v3

•This was the formation:– armed guards in front of the formation.

– 7 priest blowing trumpets followed.

– Then the Ark of the covenant of the Lord.

– The people followed.

(This is now the Lord’s battle and He is in charge)

•On the seventh day the Walls of Jericho came

down. v15-16

•Silver, gold, and bronze were devoted to God.

•Rahab and her family were saved.

•And the city was completely destroyed.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSIONS1. Those who crossed the Jordan were circumcised 5:2-3. Why

was this necessary?

2. The children of Israel ate the Passover in the Land. What does this Passover remind them about? Exodus 12:6-14.

3. Joshua met the divine commander 5:13-15. What message is God giving to him?

4. Jericho fell. Chapter 6. Why was it necessary to follow God’s strategy and not ordinary approach?
