THE SERIESOklahoma leads the all-time series, 30-5, after win-ning 10 of the last 11 meetings. The Red Raiders will be looking for their first win against the Sooners in Lubbock as Tech is 0-12 at home in the series.

RED RAIDERS 30TH IN FIRST RPI RANKINGSAfter the best start in school history, Texas Tech ranked 30th in the first NCAA RPI rankings released this week. The Red Raiders are the seventh-highest ranked team in the Big 12, trailing Texas (No. 3), Mis-souri (No. 5), Oklahoma (No. 8), Nebraska (No. 11), Baylor (No. 14), and Oklahoma State (No. 23).

BIG 12 COULD BE OPEN RACEAfter only one week of Big 12 play, the conference race appears it could go down to the final weekend. Three out of five series were split last weekend while Texas and Missouri both posted sweeps. The Tigers already have four wins to lead the league, which has eight teams currently ranked in the top 25.

Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

RED RAIDERS IN THE BIG 12 RANKINGS

A LOOK AT OKLAHOMA...The Sooners arrive in Lubbock fresh off a split series against Nebraska last weekend in Norman and a midweek win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday. The Sooners have played one of the toughest sched-ules in the country as five of their nine losses have come to opponents ranked in the top 25. Keilani Rickets leads OU in the circle with a 16-5 record and 1.14 ERA, while Jessica Shults has recorded a .358 av-erage at the plate to go along with a Big 12-leading 18 home runs and 53 RBIs.

SARTINI PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACHTexas Tech head coach promoted assistant coach Aly Sartini to the title of associate head coach this week. Sartini, in her second year at Tech, directs the Tech pitching staff and outfielders, while also assist-ing in the program’s recruiting efforts as well as aca-demic and travel matters.

BLEDSOE A REGULAR ON THE BASESThrough 38 games this season, Emily Bledsoe has reached base in 37 of those outings, including the first 34 games of the year. Bledsoe is second on the team with a .515 on-base percentage, trailing only Cydney Allen’s .542 percentage. No Tech player reached base in more than 30 games last year as Mikey Kenney found first 27 times to lead the team.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO REBOUND AGAINST OUMissouri’s Chelsea Thomas stifled the Tech offense for most of the two teams’ series last weekend, hold-ing the Red Raiders to only two runs off five hits. Tech had not been held to under two runs in a game all season and its two hits in the series finale set a new season low.

OFFENSE FOUND SUCCESS A YEAR AGOThe Red Raiders were able to plate more than enough runners last year against the Sooners, scor-ing seven runs in each game of a midweek double-header on April 15. Tech lost the first game, 9-7, be-fore rebounding to win in extra innings, 7-6, in the finale. The Sooners shut down the Red Raiders in the Big 12 quarterfinal game, however, as Keilani Rickets threw a three-hit shutout en route to a 2-0 victory.

FANS PACK THE ROCKTexas Tech’s 1,248 fans in attendance during the se-ries finale against Missouri easily broke the school record of 853 set on March 28 last year against Iowa State. Three of the five largest crowds in school his-tory have come in Shanon Hays’ two-year tenure and fans are encouraged to once again pack Rocky John-son Field again this weekend against Oklahoma.

TECH AGAINST TOP 25 TEAMS UNDER HAYSThe Red Raiders have won more than a handful of games against top 25 opponents under second-year head coach Shanon Hays. Tech is 8-13 against ranked teams under Hays, including 2-2 so far this season. Six out of the next eight conference series to close the season will be against opponents currently ranked in the top 25.

RED RAIDERS BOAST MOST WINS IN THE NATIONDespite being swept by Missouri last weekend, Texas Tech still has the most wins (35) among any Division-I team in the country as the Red Raiders are one of only five teams with at least 30 wins this season, joining Alabama (33-2), Arizona State (33-2), Florida (30-4), and Michigan (31-2).

DENNIS, TALLEY EXPECTED TO STARTHead coach Shanon Hays will likely go with left-handers Kelsey Dennis (10-1) and Brittany Talley (11-2) in both games this weekend as the duo has combined to win 21 games between them. Fresh-man right-hander Kermitria Ward (5-0; 3 saves) and sophomore righty Ashley Brokeshoulder (7-0) will be two of Tech’s likely options out of the bullpen.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKThrough only 38 games, the 2011 Texas Tech squad has already laid its mark in the school’s record book, setting the single-season records for runs, RBIs, home runs, and games ended via run rule. The Red Raiders have also had two no-hitters this season from freshmen Kermitria Ward and Brittany Talley, while several individuals such as Logan Hall, Cyd-ney Allen, and Sandy James have either broken or matched single-game records already in place.

TOUGH STRETCH TO START CONFERENCE PLAYPrior to the season, both Oklahoma and Missouri were picked to finish first and second in the Big 12, respectively. Texas Tech, who was picked to finish seventh, will host both schools to open Big 12 play as the Red Raiders will get an early test to see where it stands in the Big 12 ranks. Not to make things easier, the Red Raiders will then face No. 15 Baylor in a midweek doubleheader on April 6 as Tech will open league play with three-straight series against ranked opponents.

RED RAIDERS BOAST BIG 12’s TOP OFFENSE Texas Tech enters this week’s action with the top of-fense in the Big 12 Conference as the Red Raiders have posted a .379 average so far. The next highest average in the conference is .350 from Texas.

KENNEY LEADS BIG 12 IN DOUBLESAfter starting the year with nine doubles in Texas Tech’s first 16 games, Mikey Kenney currently leads the Big 12 in the category as the sophomore out-fielder has recorded 13 doubles on the season, two more than the conference’s next highest total.

BLEDSOE ENDS CAREER HIGH HITTING STREAKEmily Bledsoe snapped her career-long 13 game hit-ting streak in Tech’s 5-1 victory over Jacksonville. The junior infielder went 0-for-1 at the plate but reached base three times off two walks and a hit by pitch.

RED RAIDERS FACE TOUGH PITCHING IN FLORIDAHeading into the USF The Game Tournament in Florida, one thing head coach Shanon Hays thought might benefit Tech down the road was the improved pitching the Red Raiders would see. Tech for the most part saw each school’s top pitcher, including Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest, who one-hit Big 12 foe Texas A&M the day before facing Tech.

PATIENCE HELPS TECH SET SCHOOL RECORDIn Tech’s first game in Clearwater, Fla., the Red Raid-ers took advantage of 18 Colorado State walks at the plate, shattering the school record of 11 that was previously set in 2007 against Oklahoma State.

TECH KEEPS EARNING WEEKLY ACCOLADESSandy James became the third-consecutive Texas Tech player to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week last week as the sophomore joined Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as weekly accolade honorees. Pri-or to this season, only four Tech players had earned Player of the Week honors. James hit .667 during the Masked Rider Invitational with six home runs to go along with 20 RBIs, pacing Tech to a doubleheader sweep of New Mexico and a 7-1 week.

WARD’S NO-HITTER TIES SCHOOL RECORDKermitria Ward tossed her first career no-hitter against Alcorn State on March 13, becoming just the fifth Tech pitcher to ever record the feat. Ward joins freshman teammate Brittany Talley in the no-hit club as the duo tied the school record set in 1999 for most no-hitters in a single season. The freshman was making her first collegiate start against the Braves after coming out of the bullpen for most of the year.

DENNIS RELIABLE IN THE CIRCLEDuring Tech’s 25-game homestand, Kelsey Den-nis has found her groove in the circle. The junior allowed only eight earned runs in 40.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high four shutouts dur-ing that stretch, including three one-hitters.

ONE OF THE FINAL UNBEATENSWhen Texas Tech’s undefeated streak came to an end on March 11, the Red Raiders were one of only five teams still without a loss. Washington earned the title of the nation’s final undefeated squad be-fore eventually falling to Texas on March 17.

NEW MEXICO PROVES TO BE TOUGH TESTTech’s doubleheader against New Mexico ended up being two of Tech’s closest games this season as the Red Raiders took game one, 9-6, before closing the day with a 5-3 win. Tech had previously played only one game (St. John’s on Feb. 25) since the season-opening Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament that was decided by three runs or less.

JAMES LEAVES HER MARK AGAINST LOBOSSandy James provided a huge lift to the Tech offense against New Mexico, belting two home runs in the doubleheader while adding eight RBIs. Her four RBIs in each game set a new season high as the sopho-more accounted for eight of Tech’s 14 total runs.

PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDSThe Texas Tech pitching staff set several school re-cords during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brit-tany Talley leads the Red Raiders in wins so far with eight on the year.

HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKAfter hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Me-morial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addi-tion to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated.

AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400Texas Tech currently has four regular position play-ers with a batting average at .400 or higher. Cydney Allen leads all players with a .460 average followed by Logan Hall, Raven Richardson, and Emily Bledsoe. Mikey Kenney is slightly under the group with a .387 average.

TECH A STAPLE ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMFive Red Raiders along were named to the all-tour-nament team of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic while Logan Hall was honored as the tourna-ment’s Top Hitter and Brittany Talley was selected as the Top Pitcher. Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Kelsey Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team.

KENNEY PRODUCING IN LEADOFF SPOTSince moving to the leadoff spot to start the year, Mike Kenney has continued to show she is one of the top power hitters in the Big 12 as the sophomore has been one of the main catalysts for the Tech of-fense this year with her .500 on-base percentage and .387 batting average. She leads the Big 12 with 13 doubles, four more than her total from the entire 2010 season.

DREWRY MATCHES CAREER RBI NUMBERSAfter only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two sea-sons combined. The junior currently has 17 RBIs this year, matching her total from the previous two sea-sons.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSICTexas Tech honored the university’s long-consid-ered founder of women’s athletics with the Jean-nine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics direc-tor when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDERTo say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invi-tational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .500 average, the highest on the team.

SPEAKING OF HALL...Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school re-cord that had not been matched since the 1997 sea-son against New Mexico.

HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEYMikey Kenney’s two home run day to close the Texas Tech Invitational moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Cork-ing (2005-08) for third all-time. After matching the single-season record with 15 home runs as a fresh-man, it’s not a stretch to think Kenney could some day match Kim Martinez’ school record of 27.

RED RAIDERS END LONG HOMESTANDThe Red Raiders ended a 25-game homestand on March 13 that began with the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 18. Tech played at home for nearly a month, hosting four separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before traveling to Florida for the USF The Game Tournament. The homestand was the longest in school history.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUTAfter only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Clas-sic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

FOX NOT ONLY FAMILY MEMBER IN TOP 25Texas Tech assistant coach Kristy Fox is not the only member of the Fox family ranked in the top 25. Fox’s younger sister, Kellie Fox, is the starting shortstop for 7th-ranked UCLA as only a freshman.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENTEmily Bledsoe has had many big hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-from-behind vic-tory. The junior described the hit as a “top five mo-ment” during the following week’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTSFor being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Lit-tle Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRYWith all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVERFreshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school se-nior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAYTech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no or-dinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend.

BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAINTo say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Eight of the conference’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this season with one more (Kan-sas) also receiving votes.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECHPrior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the sev-enth, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATEThe Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay divi-dends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The con-ference currently has seven schools ranked among the top 25 nationally with another receiving votes in Baylor.

ALLEN FACES FORMER SCHOOLJunior catcher Cydney Allen saw a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s season-opener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010. She finished 3-for-5 in the game, while also scoring a run.

HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATELogan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajik-awa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one



season at Pima Community College before transfer-ring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection.

HOME SWEET HOMEThe Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history.

“THE ROCK” SEES NEW ADDITIONFans entering Rocky Johnson Field this season will see a new addition just off the warning track - a new outfield wall. A black, padded wall replaced the chain-link fence that had been in place since the park’s opening in 2001. The wall also extends down the outfield foul lines.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEWu Texas Tech returned to a NCAA Regional last sea-son for the first time in 10 seasons, eventually falling to Hawaii in the championship game of the regional, held on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, Calif. EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM LAST YEARWith eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team.

FROM ACROSS THE NATIONNearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. All together eight states are represented on this year’s roster, including Ala-bama Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Tex-as, Utah, and Washington.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNSTech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bled-

soe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup.

RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMSFollowing the graduation of former standout pitch-er Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an out-fielder and will occasionally pinch run.

RYBA TO REDSHIRT 2011 SEASONDespite appearing on Tech’s roster, junior infielder Melissa Ryba will redshirt the 2011 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado.

TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season.



No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a pro-gram on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earned-run average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement

under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a first-year head coach in program his-tory. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years. In addition to his time at the Division-I level, Hays has also made stops as the head coach at Frank Phil-lips College (1995-96), Abilene Christian (1996-99), and Midland College (2002-03), while also serving as the Abilene Christian athletics director from 2001-02. Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his fa-ther, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s broth-er and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
