Advertising covers have long been popular with collectors of Texas postal history. The illustrated ad covers were widely used in Texas and elsewhere in the 1880-1930 period, and can be used to ad color, local history, and topical interest to anycollection. Herewith is a lovely cover from 1894 with an attractive two-color ad fora Beaumont lumber dealer. This would easily fit into collections of Beaumont cov-ers, Texas economic history, the lumber industry, and Columbians on cover.

Nice Small PO Profiles in this Issue

This issue features a pair of stories about some un-

usual Texas post offices. Jim Stever has produced an

intriguing profile of the Sport, Texas Post Office that

was propelled by multi-millionaire Col. Ned Green of

Inverted Jenny fame. In fact, the Locket Copy of one

of the U.S. C3a Jenny’s he made for his wife Mabel

was recently sold to a coin collector. There is an inter-

esting twist about the postmaster of the Sport PO that

was responsible for mail in one facility only!

Next is a piece about the rise and dissipation of the

South Texas town and post office at Catarina, Texas by

Joe Crosby. The town is featured in a country song by

Max Stalling titled “Cowboy from Catarina.”

Website Survey on Inside Front Cover

We would like your feedback on the TPHS website. To

get you started, we have a few questions listed on the

inside front cover of this issue. This will help us assess

the current design and content, plus give us an idea of

what members would like to see. There is a Members

Section, only accessible by members that includes spe-

cial features such as the entire run of TPHS Journals

beginning in 1975, a cover database for research and

an exhibits area where we will post some of the no-

table TPHS exhibits.

Philately consists of two divisions – stamp collecting and postal his-

tory collecting. One of the most famous stamp collectors was Col.

E.H.R. Green. Actually, he wasn’t a collector but rather a massive

accumulator whose subsequent philatelic sales after his death in 1936

consisted of 29 major auctions totaling some 50,000 lots.

Col. Green was Edward “Ned” Green, son of one of the richest

women in the world, Hetty Green, who was known as “The Witch of

Wall Street.” When she acquired the Texas Midland Railroad in 1893,

she sent Ned to the headquarters in Terrell, Texas. to oversee operations.

In Texas, Green owned some 17 companies in Dallas, supposedly

drove the first automobile in Texas, and was active in Republican poli-

tics. He became acquainted with Democratic Texas Gov. Oscar Colquitt,

who, in the custom of that time, could bestow the title of “Colonel” on

worthy citizens. So Green, who would become famous in philatelic cir-

cles when he acquired the entire 100-stamp sheet of the 1918 “Upside

Down Jenny” airmail error, became “Colonel” Green in Texas.

With an enormous amount of wealth, Green delved into wealthy ac-

tivities. One was tarpon fishing in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas

coast. He acquired land on the south end of St. Joseph’s Island and built

a $40,000 clubhouse. He named it the Tarpon Club, and it became a des-

tination for his rich friends and associates from the East Coast and the

Midwest. They were treated to fishing in the gulf, plus duck and wild

game hunting on the island.

Placing that many “important” people at such a re-

mote location presented a problem. Their status re-

quired communication with the outside world,

particularly to handle situations in the financial world

and perhaps to deal with a curious spouse. Green

solved the problem by requesting a U.S. Post Office in

the Tarpon Club. Regulations required a town before a

post office could be established, so Green named the

place “Sport” in recognition of fishing and hunting

sports.

The “town” of Sport, Texas, consisting of only one

building, received a post office on March 6, 1899. A

Green employee, Carl R. Evans, who was the overseer

of the property, was named postmaster of Sport, Texas.

There is some evidence that this unique one-build-

ing “town” was not only the site of tarpon fishing and

duck hunting but also a place for drinking and woman-

izing. At any rate, the Sport Post Office was discontin-

ued on Dec. 31, 1904, because Col. Green’s interests

had changed. He sold the Tarpon Club facility and it

was later razed.

Obviously, there was very little mail in and out of

Sport, Texas. Shown is the only known cover from

Sport, Texas, and it is no doubt a great rarity. It was

posted March 12, 1900, and was sent that day via mail

boat to Rockport, Texas (marking on reverse). A

Cleveland, Ohio, receiving mark on March 18 is also

on the reverse.

Although letters to and from the Sport Post Office

were scarce, according to page 249 of A HundredYears of Texas Waterfowl Hunting: The Decoys,

He was a highly-regardedcivic leader, trustee and advisory board memberfor several charities.

Riester was just the kind of well-to-do guest whowould take part in the activities of Col. Green’sTarpon Club at St. Joseph’s Island. It is likely Riester addressed the above cover to his wifePauline back in Cleveland.

This book chronicles the history, development and

usages of county and postmaster handstamps of

Texas on cover known to date. The covers, over 150

of them, are presented in full color. There are two

tables which list the known 221 cancellations

alphabetically and then again alphabetically by

county. There is a rarity guide which sets value based

on years of usage and what has been seen or docu-

mented. Several of the covers are from the

stampless period, a few are from the Confederate

period, but most are from the 1870s and 1880s.

Guides, Clubs and Places, 1870s to 1970s by R.K.

Sawyer, “Instead of letters and newspapers, however,

Postmaster Evans was kept busy with gourmet foods,

fine liquors and wine sent south from throughout the

United States.”

On Jan. 11, 1899, the Dallas Morning News re-

ported that it was understood that “Grover Cleveland,

President McKinley, Matt Quay, Mark Hanna and a host

of other men of national prominence are members of

the club.” Green would hold court on his flagship yacht,

Mabel. The newspaper also noted it would be the play-

ground of “The First 400 Sportsmen of America.”

The News reported on April 29, 1899, that 160

members of the Texas Medical Society traveled by train

to Rockport, where they boarded the yachts Mabel,Novice, Cannie, Oriole and Aneid to reach the Tarpon

Club for wining and dining.

A murder trial report in the Dallas Morning News of

June 20, 1899, includes testimony from C.R. (Carroll)

Evans. He was a bartender in Dallas and knew the vic-

tim, L.G. Randle, and the defendant, C.H. Alexander.

“I make my home now at Sport, Tex., at the Tarpon

club’s place. I know C.H. Alexander and I knew L.G.

Randle in his lifetime. I moved down to the Tarpon club

on Feb. 1 of this year. Prior to that time I was engaged

as bartender at the St. George bar in Dallas. I was so en-

gaged on Dec. 19, 1898. I recollect that Major Randle

was killed. I saw C.H. Alexander in the saloon that day.

I saw him there that afternoon about 3:30 oclock when I

went on duty shortly before 3:30 oclock and I went off

about 8 oclock. He was at the bar drinking part of that

time – all of the time that I saw him.”

So Evans went from tending bar in Dallas to become

the manager of the Tarpon Club and postmaster of

Sport, Texas!

According to the Jim Wheat Postmaster Papers,

Austin R.A. Brice, a native of Guernsey Island, took

over as Sport postmaster on Jan. 10, 1901. The 1900

U.S. Census has a page listing 27 persons residing at

“Justices Precinct 1, Division Sport PO.” It was taken

on June 30, 1900.

First listed is Edward E.H. Green, 31-year-old rail-

road president and native of England. There is Carl R.

Evans, 23, a Michigan native listed as “hotel clerk.”

Then Robert A. Brice is noted as “hotel keeper,” fol-

lowed by his wife and two children. In other census list-

ings he is referred to as “Austin R.A. Brice,” short for

Austin Robert Anderson Brice. (Continued on page 6)

Cover Encompasses Great Era

of Texas Aggie Football Glory

JohnDavidCrow

1935 -2015

In mid-June one of the greatest football players from the old

Southwest Conference and Texas A&M football died at age 79.

To a kid weaned on SWC sports in the 1950s, I had no problem

reflecting back to those days of Eisenhower, Texas drought, the

Dallas tornado and fellows like John David Crow.

Until Johnny Manziel a few years ago, John David was the

only Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M. Perhaps more

notable than that, he was the only Heisman winner who played

for the immortal coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. You may use a

search engine to see details about those two men, but here is a

description of the cover featured below:

On May 23, 1981, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame opened its

first permanent home in Grand Prairie, Texas. A cacheted cover

was executed by well-known newspaper cartoonist Bill Mc-

Clanahan for the occasion. This cover features the 1969 U.S.

football centennial 6¢ stamp (featuring a coach and his player)

and the 12¢ Torch stamp issued in Dallas.

University of Alabama Coach Bryant signed the cover at a

Cotton Bowl Classic luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Dallas

hotel in late 1981 before the Crimson Tide played The Univer-

sity of Texas on New Year’s Day, 1982. Bryant was near the end

of his legendary career.

In late 1982, Crow, one of Bryant’s favorite players, was in-

ducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He signed the cover

below Bryant’s signature. Bryant died in January 1983. There

were two giants of a bygone era.

– Tom Koch

Others listed included an electrician, a seaman,

eight servants and various family members.

Brice served a period as mayor of Rockport,

Texas, according to an obituary in the May 7, 1947

Corpus Christi Caller Times. He operated the Orien-

tal, a tourist hotel at Rockport, before moving to

Corpus Christi to manage the old Seaside Hotel.

After a 1919 storm destroyed the hotel he moved to

San Antonio. He served as secretary for the Cham-

ber of Commerce before his death at 87.

The Tarpon’s clubhouse was opened Saturday,

March 18, 1899, according to the first annual report

of the Tarpon club as reported by the Dallas Morn-ing News on Dec. 17, 1899.

Catarina, TexasBy Joe H. Crosby

The name Catarina has been associated

with the area now located in Dimmit

County, Texas, since at least 1778.

Legend holds that it is the name of a Mexican

woman killed by Indians on or near the site.

The town was established after Asher

Richardson, a rancher, decided to build a rail-

way link from Artesia Wells to his planned

town of Asherton.

In return for an easement through the

nearby Taft-Catarina Ranch, Richardson

agreed to allow the ranch to establish a rail-

road depot, with cattle-shipping pens, on his

railroad. By 1910, when the Asherton and

Gulf Railway began operations, these cattle

pens had become the nucleus of a small com-

munity built by Joseph F. Green, the manager

of the ranch. Green moved the ranch head-

quarters to the depot and added a bunkhouse,

a commissary, a hotel, a post office in 1919,

and a small schoolhouse.

By 1915 the little town had 25 residents

and had become famous in the area for the

Taft House, an expensive mansion that

Charles Taft, the owner of the ranch, suppos-

edly built with oversized bathtubs to accom-

modate his brother, President William

Howard Taft.

The Catarina, Texas Post Office was orig-

inally established in Dimmit County on Dec.

16, 1919, and was discontinued Apr, 14,

1923, and the mail moved to Asherton.

Thereafter, Catarina Farms, a develop-

ment project, built roads, sidewalks, a water-

works, an impressive new hotel and installed

electric power and a telephone exchange.

Agent Charles Ladd imported entire orchards

of fruit-laden citrus trees to impress prospec-

tive investors with the area's agricultural pos-

sibilities.

The Catarina Post Office was re-established on

Mar. 2, 1926. The featured postcard was mailed Aug.

10, 1927, during the 17th month after reopening.

A large number of automobiles are noted at the

right side of the 1927 photo of Catarina (above right),

a little over a year after the post office reopened. How

was this accomplished? By conducting excursions of

potential investors and settlers. Principal among these

was Winter Garden Farms Inc. The image below

shows the “Winter Garden Farms, Inc. Excursion

Party at the Barbecue Grounds, Catarina, Texas. Win-

ter Garden District - Chas. F. Clago Colonization

agent in Charge, Nov. 9, 1926.”

By 1929 Catarina had between 1,000 and 2,500

residents, a bank, at least two groceries, a lumber com-

pany, and a bakery. Short supplies of water, marketing

problems, and the Great Depression damaged the

town. By 1931 the population had dropped to 592, and

many of its businesses had been forced to close. In

1943 Catarina had 403 residents and seven businesses;

in 1956 it had 380 residents and three businesses. By

1969 some of the town's most picturesque old build-

ings had been abandoned, and the population was 160.
