Kingsville is largely considered the“birthplace of the ranching industry.”Early settlers called the area, later tobe known as Kingsville, the “Wild

Horse Desert.” The land was purchased in 1853 byCaptain Richard E. King, who fenced in andcleared the land of Native Americans with thehelp of his family and an entire Mexican village. These villagers went on to become some of Texas’sfirst true cowboys, and even today, these Kineños(“King’s Men”) can be seen around Kingsville.Henrietta King, who provided a generous portionof her land to the city, made the local areachurches, schools and college possible by hercharitable donation. Captain and Henrietta Kinglater had the settlement named after them.

The King Ranch still exists today, allowingvisitors to step back into time and explore thefascinating cowboy history via guided tour. Thetour begins at the historic Santa Gertrudis Creek, where Captain King first camped in 1852.Historic buildings featured on the tour includeMrs. King’s Carriage House, the Commissary andlookout tour and the home built in 1912 byHenrietta, who was then Captain King’s widow. The modern-day aspects of the ranch—theauction arena, horse cemetery and the Colony, the home of the Kineños, are featured in thetour as well. Visitors also may visit the KingRanch Museum.

In 1913, Texas legislators created the county ofKleberg, naming Kingsville as the county seat.Shortly thereafter, various events spurred thegrowth of Kingsville, such as the discovery of gasand oil and the arrivals of South Texas StateTeacher’s College (now known as Texas A&MUniversity–Kingsville), the U.S. Navy andCelanese, a global producer of specialty andintermediate anemical products.

Kingsville’s storied past is evidenced by the city’shold on its history, but the presence of TexasA&M–Kingsville and other contemporary factorsbring a sense of balance to the city with aconventional and industrial look to the future. d
