Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Location of the zooplankton monitoring stations being the Polish contribution to the HELCOM COMBINE Programme. The longest data series (since 1979) were collected at deepwater stations in the Polish EEZ. In most of the cases, samples were taken 5 times per year using the WP-2 net (100 µm).

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Frequency of sampling during the summer period at the open-water stations wastemporarily unbalanced as we have years with clear domination of samples takenat the beginning of the summer or in the end only. Thus, we decided to test thebest month which for those stations appeared to be August. To fill the gaps in thedata-series we regarded samples taken late in July or at the beginning ofSeptember as a good proxy of August conditions (highlighted in yellow).

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

For the two coastal stations the analysis of September samples seemed to bebetter solution (ZP6 – station located in the Puck Bay and KW – the one in theVistula Lagoon).

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Reference periods assessed based on chlorophyll a EQR data were taken from theRCO-Scobi model (Meier et al., 2012).

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Results for station P1 (Gdansk Basin).

GES values were calculated as the lower99% CI of the time series (after Box-Coxtransformation if needed).

For lower panels the black horizontal barsare presenting the extension of thereference periods, blue lines indicateCuSum, and the lower red dashed lines arethe thresholds for CuSum

It seems to be a bit too optimistic picture …

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Results for station P5 (Borholm Basin).

GES values were calculated as the lower99% CI of the time series (after Box-Coxtransformation if needed).

For lower panels the black horizontal barsare presenting the extension of thereference periods, blue lines indicateCuSum, and the lower red dashed lines arethe thresholds for CuSum

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Results for station P140 (the southernslope of the Gotland Basin).

GES values were calculated as the lower99% CI of the time series (after Box-Coxtransformation if needed).

Margonski & Calkiewicz: Testing of the Zooplankton Mean Size and Total Stock (MSTS) Indicator …

Results for station KW (Vistula Lagoon).

GES values were calculated as the lower99% CI of the time series (after Box-Coxtransformation if needed).

For lower panels blue lines indicate CuSum,and the lower red dashed lines are thethresholds for CuSum.

Time series was too short to be linked withreference periods.

Results for station ZP6 (Puck Bay).

GES values were calculated as the lower99% CI of the time series (after Box-Coxtransformation if needed).

For lower panels blue lines indicate CuSum,and the lower red dashed lines are thethresholds for CuSum.

Time series was too short to be linked withreference periods.

Summary and further steps:

• calculation of GES values seems to be sensitive to the length and temporalallocation of the reference periods (more tests are needed),

• for presented calculations the individual body masses were standarized over theentire data series but we will test also the total abundance (TA) instead of totalbiomass (TB) to verify if the temporal patterns are the same (i.e. consistent withthe TB approach),

• sub-regional intercalibration is needed once all the results are available (weagreed to start with BY-5 data from SE, DE, and PL.
