In 2010 demands grew higher and resources grew scarce. we maximized our partnerships locallay and nationals to roll out funds, food and services to keep plates full. Voice of Hunger We are happy to report that our efforts at the State Capitol were Asset test $463,000 extra state grants Child school hunger conversation with franken

HSM was invited to provide testimony to the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommit-tee. HSM provided testimony to advocate against the planned reduction in available funds for TEFAP expenses. Going from $74.5 to $50 million will definitely impact the amount of food available for struggling families and seniors through Minnesota’s food shelves. Much of our food is now distributed at no cost to the agencies. This cut would lower the amount of administrative dollars available which would require the distributing agencies to come up with more dollars to support distribution costs. The ability to procure all TEFAP products available would be minimized.

2010 Collaborations

We had a years of firsts in 2010. HSM was please to host our first Americorop voluntesrs and our first Emerson scholar.

HSM welcomed three new staff members to support the Minnesota Food Help-

Line in September. Matt Beachey and Rachel Kennedy are our Americorps

workers and are answering HelpLine calls. Sarah Sherman, our Bill Emer-

son National Hunger Fellow, is working to evaluate the program. Sarah

recently mailed out a survey to HelpLine callers that will us determine how

the program is helping people and help inform any changes that we might

make to the HelpLine. We were approved for a federal Americorps grant that will allow us to add one to two

full-time volunteers to our staff. These volunteers will begin in September and will work on the HelpLine. The federal government provides the majority of funding for this program, but Greater Twin Cities United Way has also commit-ted to paying the non-federal funding that is required during the first year of the grant.

HSM and DHS/OEO are co-sponsoring a 1-day 2010 Food Shelf conference on September 14 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. So far over 70 food shelves are enrolled with over 120 individuals in attendance.

We also had the opportunity to strengthen our collaboration with Twin Cities United Way via our membership in the Twin Cities Hunger Initiative. We took a lead role in the Walk to End Hunger and co-lead the successful Eat

Well To Be Well campaign

The Walk to End Hunger event raised $279,000 on Thanksgiving Day, which was a 43% increase over the 2009 event. Hunger Solutions raised $7,568 in designated funds through the event, a huge increase over what we raised in 2009. The HSM Board team raised $3,160 through the event. HSM staff raised $1,611.

HSM is promoting the use of Food Sup-

port via the Minne- sota Food Help-

Line. HelpLine outreach is being

conducted via the Eat Well to Be Well

campaign. This campaign encour-

ages Minnesotan’s over 60 to screen themselves for eligibility. The program is designed

to alleviate the traditionally low participation rate of seniors in the Food Support (Food

Stamp) program. The nonprofit Minnesota Institute of Public Health (MIPH) designed a

multi-year campaign aimed at increasing seniors’ awareness of the financial and health

benefits of the Food Support Program. The campaign images, messages and materials

are be designed to motivate seniors to use Food Stamps and also to encourage provid-

ers, families, doctors, trusted advisors and advocates to support the behavior

change. The campaign is in soft launch now and will be fully announced in May for Old-

er Americans Month. The campaign has been distributed to Store to Door clients, meals

on Wheels households; and the program is being promoted to metro area doctors. So

far the campaign has increased seniors calls to the HelpLine by 15%.

HSM and DHS/OEO co-sponsored a very well-received 1-day 2010 Food Shelf conference on September 14 at the Min-nesota Landscape Arboretum. Over 300 individuals were in attendance. We have received positive feedback from both the food shelf representatives and the workshop lead-ers. One major theme is: "Do this again every year". It had been at least 3 years since the last statewide food shelf conference. The new location was also a hit with the ma-jority of attendees. Alejandro Moldanado, from the Office of Civil Right at DHS/OEO was the main event. Here's feedback from one attendee: "The keynote speaker was very interesting and kept my attention. The points he made were very relevant to our practice and he addressed issues that are often overlooked from day to day."

We were able to offer tremendous financial support to our network of food shelves in 2010. Our long time partnership with Oyh took a new tack and we are to leverage $1,000,000

HSM is partnering with Open Your Heart to present a new fund challenge for food shelves during Hunger awareness month in September. Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless brings you a new approach to Hunger Awareness Month (September) with their new $100,000 food shelf challenge grant. This project will be more than a grant to food shelves – it will be a statewide initiative

that will leverage OYH funding to bring additional dollars to food shelves and increase awareness of hunger within our state. The challenge funds will be a proportional match with the minimum grant being $250.00. HSM and Open Your Heart will also create a new online donation tool via Give MN that will allow people to make designat-ed donations to their local food shelf during September as part of the Challenge

HSM and Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless will roll out a new fund raising event this July called the OYH Summer Challenge Grant. Designed to raise awareness, donations, the campaign will feature local community chal-lenges to assist food shelves in the summer, when the shelves have increased need from out of school students and lower donations.

As a responsive partners to the x we were also able to ac-quire a fund via the federal stimulus via the Tanf $1,000,000

New Summer program filled nutrition gap for children Hunger Solutions Minnesota leveraged a local grant in order to secure a large Federal grant this past summer. It allowed us to provide a new summer opportunity for Minnesota food shelves to create nutrition programs that focused on children living at or below 200% of poverty. During the school year, forty percent of Minnesota school‐age chil‐dren rely on free or reduced school food for 2/3 of their calories. Summer means no school and often means low quality meals for these students. Food shelves have a unique ability to address the food needs of children. Each summer, Minnesota food shelves help families fill this nutritional gap. The new program reached over 93,000 children with 1.7 million pounds of food in 127 Minnesota communities.

CAER food shelf in Elk River was one of the grant recipients. To fill the summer hunger void, they developed “Kidz Kitz.” Each package contained five day’s worth of breakfasts and lunches. They
