Spinach in my teethThe Pagans went all out to celebrate the Jubilee, well
actually that’s not quite true. Having gleaned tickets, along with the immaculate in-laws and niece, to see Cold-Play and booked an overnight stay in leafy
Hampstead we discovered that the date happily coincided with the Thames River Pageant.
“We could go and have a quick look Sandra as it’s on our way back. It’ll be great for the kids”, was the extent of The Husband's Jubilee fever.
Mind you I didn’t think I was particularly Royalist, but none the less, found myself in our market town's ironmongery emporium purchasing meters of bunting and two flags, having come over all patriotic; must be something to do with my impending menopause.
I am more Republican than Royalist but come the revolution there are plenty more people I’d put before the wall rather than the Monarchy, but that’s another story.
So The Husband arrived home to find the back garden and trampoline bedecked with bunting.
“Crikey Sandra, are you alright love? The two flags out the front have crossed over in the wind – makes us look like the head quarters of the BNP, what’s going on?”
“Mum’s gone mad!” Was the response from Star II.
And so it was, with the Jubilee weekend upon us, we eventually found our way out of the over crowded Underground and up into the manic excitement of the Embankment. We were obviously a tad late, if we had wanted to see the river we should have ditched Cold-Play and camped out by Old Father Thames overnight.
So in the time honoured British tradition we queued thirty minutes for our Latte and hot chocolate while watching the Coronation on the big screens, without so much as a glimpse of the river. There was the occasional fanfare rehearsal, which prompted cheers from beneath a sea of umbrellas; I guess you had to be there…
Another thirty minutes to get across Waterloo Bridge and the delights of an equally crowded South Bank lay before us - burgers, baguettes and beer. According to the program Her Majesty was not due to pass by (unseen by us), for another hour. There were rumblings in the ranks; sensing imminent mutiny, the brother in law generously produced two pints of Pimms to soothe troubled waters.
In short the weather came blowing in cold and wet, even The Husband became petulant, “Not much point in hanging around here Sandra love, can we just go.”
So we watched the Pageant live on the niece's i-Phone homeward bound on the train; it was the closest we were to get to any Royals and celebrities, or so I thought…
The end of the celebratory week culminated in the Alresford Music Festival, the sun shone (!) and the music and new venue were better than ever. Mid afternoon a friend pointed out a rather handsome man in the crowd, turns out he was the saxophonist in a famous eighties band.
“Well I never”.Then I made a fatal mistake, I told The Husband who was having none of it.“No, Sandra, that’s not him, no way”.After ten minutes of arguing the point I was bored, “Go and ask him then!”
So, fuelled by copious pints, he did. I watched in horror as he manoeuvred his way closer and closer to said star and finally started chatting away. The next time I looked The Husband was dragging the unfortunate celeb over to me.“This is Sandra, she’s a huge fan”
Oh God. The poor man had obviously been through this ordeal many times before, but he was a gent. A kiss on each cheek was enough to send me crimson and I started waffling on about how lovely life in the country was, asking how long had he lived here. Whilst thinking ‘shut up!!’
I mentioned how young the band playing were, he said they were ‘tight’, I nodded sagely as if I knew what he meant, it was all going rather well until The Husband said,“Actually I preferred Japan to you guys really”.Handsome celeb took it well but I panicked, desperate to pay him a compliment I blurted out,“I must be much older than you. Have you had any work done you look amazing?”
Turns out he was a little older than me and no his good looks were all his own, and then with a kiss on the hand he was off and who could blame him.“Well he was a nice bloke wasn’t he? Oh Sandra love did you know you’ve got some spinach in your teeth?”
Marvellous.Sandra Pagan.

Test Valley Borough Council News
The Fallen of Romsey from both World Wars”.
Councillor Tony Ward, Portfolio Holder for Community and Leisure Services at Test Valley Borough Council said “The impact of both world wars on Britain was huge and the end of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever. The majority of casualties were buried where they fell, so memorials offered a focus for grief and remembrance, as they still do today”.
He continued “I am very pleased that the Romsey War Memorial now has Grade II status as listing helps to mark a building’s significance and celebrate its special architectural and historic interest. It also brings specific protection so that its special interest can be properly considered in managing its future”.
It has been confirmed that Romsey War Memorial has been added as a Grade II
listing to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
War memorials possess considerable historic and cultural significance for their link with world conflict and highlight the human cost to communities across the country. The Romsey Memorial has been designated at Grade II for its “Historical interest: as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by this community in the First and Second World Wars, it is of strong historic and cultural significance both at a local and a national level”. In turn the armed forces and their families will be better able to integrate service life into civilian life and to use their skills to help the local community. The Covenant encompasses issues such as assisting service personnel with access to home ownership and supported accommodation, providing an opportunity to secure business grants for people leaving the forces and volunteering opportunities for service personnel to use their existing skills to help the community, while learning new ones. It also seeks to ensure that employers recognise the merits of employing reservists and understand the legislation which supports both employer and employee.
The signatories welcomed the agreement to work together for the benefit of service personnel, their families and the wider community.
Monday, 25 June saw the Signing Ceremony for
the Community Covenant between Test Valley Borough Council and the armed forces in the Borough at the Army Air Corps, Middle Wallop, Hampshire. The Community Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual agreement between all signatories. It signals their commitment to work together to honour, support and help the armed forces and their families, recognising the sacrifices they make and remembering that some pay the ultimate sacrifice. The signatories to the Community Covenant are Test Valley Borough Council, Andover Garrison, Corps of the Royal Engineers, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and the Army Air Corps.
The Covenant presents the opportunity for the council to focus its knowledge, expertise and experience to provide appropriate advice and services to members of the forces and their families.

Don’t lose your vote in 2012
Voter registration forms have been distributed through
letter boxes across theTest Valley. Householders are urged to re-register on-line, by phone or by text to reduce the cost of administration but, if you’re unable to access these options or need to make changes to who should be on the register, please return your form by post as soon as possible.
Your local Electoral Registration Officer, Roger Tetstall, and his staff use these forms to compile the next electoral register for Test Valley. If you haven’t received your form you can contact the Electoral Registration Office on 01264 368000 or print one off at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. The electoral register is being compiled earlier than usual this year. This is due to the Police & Crime Commissioner Elections for Hampshire taking place on 15 November 2012.
Roger Tetstall said: “Registering to vote is very simple. If your details haven’t changed, you can re-register on-line, by phone or by text. Doing it this way reduces the cost of administration and so saves the Council money
which we can use to provide other services. It’s also good for the environment. If your details have changed, all you have to do is update the annual registration form with the details of everyone in your household who is eligible to vote and return it to us as soon as possible.
You need to confirm your details each year. If you can’t register by any other method, complete and return your registration form as soon as possible so that you don’t lose your right to vote. If you do it on-line, by phone or text, please don’t send your registration form back as well”.
When you register to vote you can opt to have your details excluded from the edited register. This will mean your details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations.
For more information, please contact your local Electoral Registration Officer at Test Valley Borough Council on 01264 368000.

Family Stargazing event at the Museum of Army Flying
The Museum of Army Flying is hosting a star gazing event on
Saturday 15th September at 7pm. The stars, galaxies and possibly even the moon will be revealed to visitors when the Museum hosts special and stargazing equipment. Our expert astronomer Graham Bryant from Hampshire Astronomical Group will tour through the stars, solar system and galaxies in a fascinating illustrated presentation. Tickets are £5 per person. The event is perfect for children aged 8 and over looking to learn about the Solar System.
The museum is fortunate enough to have a wonderful location for star gazing occupying a high position with panoramic views. Marketing officer Rebecca Clay says ‘we rarely get an opportunity to gaze at the night sky in these fantastic dark and exposed conditions. Visitors to the event will get the opportunity to see stars with expert tuition from the astronomers from Hampshire Astronomical Group.’ Before the excitement
of the stargazing, visitors will also be able to enjoy an illustrated tour through the solar system by Graham. He will conduct his ‘telescope clinic’ and instruct in the use of telescopes and star gazing equipment as well as highlight what to look out for in our skies.
Graham Bryant is an amateur astronomer and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and is one of the founding members of the Campaign for Dark Skies, an astronomical pressure group that promotes better use of external lighting. Graham is also Chairman of the Hampshire Astronomical Group; its large observatory is based in Clanfield. He has been involved in the astronomical world for the past 44 years and lectures to astronomical societies, schools and numerous non-astronomical clubs and interest groups on the subject of astronomy and space sciences.
Wherwell Singers are currently recruiting for new singers
Join us from the Autumn. Whether you’re a regular singer in another choir
who wants to do more singing, or someone who hasn’t sung for a while, we’d love to hear from you. We’re particularly keen to hear from tenors and basses!
Who we areWe’re a friendly adult choir of 25 singers drawn from across the Test Valley who rehearse in Wherwell Church on Wednesday evenings. We give 2 or 3 concerts each year in North Hampshire and take up 1 or 2 invites a year to contribute to charity concerts and other events. We also have social events, after-concert parties (of course!) and an annual party.
The choir is a mix of singers – some sing in other choirs, some don’t. Some sight read, some don’t. What’s most important to us is a real passion for choral singing, a commitment to attending rehearsals and a commitment to keep raising our standard. Recently, we had a productive and fun workshop with Brian Kay, and in October we’ll be spending a day with internationally acclaimed vocal coach Hilary Llystyn-Jones.

How do athletes get “in the zone”?
How do they keep themselves focused when the pressures on?
It was interesting to watch Andy Murray, coached by Ivan Lendl and I’m not talking about the tennis but his mental approach. Sports psychologists and hypnotherapists are now playing an increasing role in the player’s preparation.
During Murray's final you’ll have noticed that Lendl kept a very static blank stance providing Andy with no feedback whatsoever. He remained what NLP would term as a “calm anchor”. You might also have wondered what Andy was doing at the end of the match when he spent some moments looking up to the skies with both arms raised and his index fingers pointing up. Certainly he was accessing his visual mind (FYI: upwards is where you construct and remember images, sideways auditory, downwards feelings and internal dialogue).
Whatever the significance was he wasn’t going to share it when Sue Barker asked. He was somehow mentally closing down the match and setting himself up perhaps for lifting that trophy next year bearing in mind we get what we focus on.
Nowadays it’s not enough to have the skills and physical fitness to excel; mental strategies need to be effective to enable us to access our maximum potential especially when the pressure's
on. So the biggest competitor the player faces is really himself. When players are out of the zone you’ll notice they start talking to themselves beginning an inner mind game - in creeps the self doubt, self judgements, muscle tension and nerves leading to mistakes. What seems to be helpful actually achieves the opposite.
If you want success once you have the skills• Relax and trust yourself to simply let it happen • Quieten your internal voice• Be an observer of what is happening and change tactics accordingly
There’s much more to this of course but essentially your conscious mind has certain functions (i.e. to set the goal) as does your subconscious mind (i.e.to deliver the goal by accessing the programming).Get it right and you’re “in the zone”!
For further insight I recommend “The Inner Game of Tennis” by W.T.Gallwey; it’s as relevant to life as it is to sport.

England callup
Sparsholt youngster Hayden Chant has been selected to ride for
England Junior Cycle Speedway team in the home international to be held at Oxford on the 28th July against Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Hayden started racing cycle speedway four years ago for local side Southampton and has increasingly been putting in some fantastic performances. This year his performances in the Welsh Junior Open, Ade Gale Laurels and the British Youth and Junior League has brought praise from rival team managers and fellow riders.
England team managers Pete Barnes and Colin Sutton are always introducing new riders into the squad and both are very impressed by the way Hayden conducts himself on and off the track and always gives 100% effort. Hayden is Currently lying 2nd in the South and South Wales Junior League U16's class which in turn sees him qualify for the four national rounds off the British Youth and Junior League Grand Prix Series. In August he will be competing in the British U16 individual Championship to be held at East Newport Wales.
Open water charity swim in Loch Ness
Dear Friends. Call me a ‘girl that likes a challenge’, ‘foolhardy’
or just plain ‘crazy’... I am attempting a one mile, open water swimming race in Loch Ness on August 18th, to raise funds for my next humanitarian trip to Kenya with the Divinity Foundation! The swim will be in challenging open water conditions and the water is going to be around 10 - 13°! I shall be wearing a triathlon wetsuit, wetsuit vest, gloves, hat and booties! Not to mention swathes of Vaseline round my neck! I will be travelling out to Kenya in May next year to do
another humanitarian trip with the Divinity Foundation. I am hoping to raise £1000 to fund my trip and to go towards buying mosquito nets, medication and medical supplies. I am sure it will be another rewarding and challenging trip to provide free healthcare and support to very poor women and children, living in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, orphanages and remote villages of the Mara. Have a look at my blog from 2010 for an idea of what conditions we treated and the adventures we encountered! http://www.stockbridgeosteopathicpractice.com
For more information on the charity please visit their website: www.divinityfoundation.com. For details of the Monster Swim, look here!: www.monsterswim.co.uk. If you would like to support me and help fund my trip, and in so doing help up to 4000 women and children in the space of 3 weeks, you can
make a donation by simply e mailing me ([email protected]) and pledging an amount, and sending me a cheque or cash (payable to myself and sent to Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice, High Street, Stockbridge, SO20 6HF.

Charitable Trust’s major award boost blood cancer appeal
Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal has been boosted
to the tune of £100,000 thanks to a generous grant from The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, founded in 1964 by industrialist Sir Jules Thorn with the aim of supporting numerous humanitarian causes and in particular medical research and treatment.
The grant brings Southampton Hospital Charity one step closer to completing the project to build a specialist blood cancer day unit, with just over £350,000 left to raise to make the project a reality. It is hoped that the remaining money can be raised this year, so that building work can begin this December.
The Red & White Appeal aims
to raise £1.76million to create a purpose built day case unit for patients with leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.Patients will visit the day case unit, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, sometimes for many years. It becomes a regular home during one of the most frightening experiences of a person’s life and the money invested in improving the environment will have a huge impact on their experience.
To find out more about the Red & White Appeal or to make a donation please visit www.redandwhiteappeal.org or call 023 8079 8881.

Alresford Agricultural ShowA great day out
The 104th Alresford Agricultural Show will take place in 1st September 2012 in the magnificent surroundings of Tichborne Park, Hampshire.
Many shows claim to be ‘country’ shows, but very few can match the Alresford Show when it comes to being an authentic reflection of life in the Hampshire farming world. If you’ve always yearned to get close to a modern hi-tech £100,000 tractor, you’ll find plenty here – and plenty of people who own and drive one for a living. Eavesdrop on one of the many machinery stands and you might hear a show-day deal being done – depending, of course, on how this year’s harvest goes.
Perhaps vintage machinery is your thing – the sight of a Super Major or a B250 rekindles memories from your youth. Chances are that you’ll find one, polished and pampered to perfection, proudly parading in the main ring during the Vintage Machinery display.
The link between farming and horses goes back thousands of years, and equine affairs have always featured strongly at the Alresford Show; this year will be no exception. You’ll find heavy horses, Iberian horses, show hunters, classes for children and the Diamond Jubilee Fancy Dress. The range of other livestock you’ll find is just as large and varied, ranging from the traditional cattle, pigs and sheep, to bees, goats and alpacas. Come and meet their owners and ask a few questions – although you might need a long afternoon when the proud breeder starts to wax lyrical about his/her charges.
If you’re not careful you could also lose many hours in the peace and quiet of the horticultural tent among the fabulous displays of roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss all the other activities that happen on the day. You can run with the beagles, climb the spider mountain, enjoy watching Alresford Rugby Club’s displays and tackle their bungee run. If you impress them enough, you might be offered a game!
If you enjoy a bit of retail therapy, you’ll be in heaven. Everything from greeting cards to combine
harvesters will be available. The organisers go to great lengths to ensure that trade stands and exhibitors match perfectly with the Show’s local countryside theme. The Craft Tent will be bursting with ceramics, lace making, jewellery and sculpture. And a visit to the Produce tent to sample Hampshire’s finest cheeses, cider, wines and cakes will leave you equally full.
So it’s a good thing tickets are such a bargain: £13 for adults, £9 for senior citizens – accompanied under 15s are free. All tickets are £1.50 cheaper if bought before 25th August. Buy online at www.alresfordshow.co.uk or by calling 01749 813899; from Morgan’s Hardware or County News in Alresford; SCATS in Winchester; the Petersfield Post in Petersfield and Bishops Waltham Post Office.

Stockbridge Music
Following on from the success of their first concert on 11th May,
Stockbridge Music are pleased to announce the details of their second concert to be held on Saturday 6th October in St Peter’s Church, Stockbridge.
Stockbridge Music has been set up to bring Chamber Music of all varieties to Stockbridge, inviting professional musicians to perform, such as the London based string quartet Pro Musica, who performed the first concert to a full house, as well as local musicians and students.
For this concert, they have invited The Jane Austen Singers to perform a concert of Sacred Choral Music covering six centuries in St Peter’s Church, Stockbridge. Their director, Tim Lowden, an ex-chorister of Winchester Cathedral, lives in Longstock and, for the last six years, has brought his singers to sing in the annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols held in St Mary’s Church, Longstock, now a well attended and permanent feature in Longstock’s calendar..
The singers were formed in 1975 and built up a fine reputation for their performances of sacred music, chamber performances of the major Oratorios as well as madrigals and part songs. Having performed in the City of London and Petworth Festivals, The Anvil, Basingstoke and St John’s Smith Square, they are now devoting their future concerts to sacred ‘Cathedral Music’.
This will be their first concert performed in the UK since 2000 and it is anticipated that their following will attract a large audience.
Full details of this concert will be released nearer the date, but this announcement is designed to ensure you put 6th October in your diaries.
Tickets will cost £8 and will be available from Robinsons, one other box office(to be announced) and at the door on the night. There will be canapes and wine served prior to the start of the concert for which a small charge will be made.

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

Who’s YOUR local legend?
Many of you are aware that Stockbridge has just benefited from
the completion of the National Cycle Network path (NCN 246) alongside the stretch of road on the A3057 between the White Hart roundabout and the entrance to the Test Way to the east of the village and opposite the school.
Part of the funding incorporates an allowance for a bench to rest, relax and enjoy the beauty of the Test Way.
The bench is to be flanked by three silhouettes of important local people from the history of Stockbridge, similar to the one in the picture.
Stockbridge Primary School children and some of the Test Valley pupils are working together in September and October to gather information on local legends to help the Parish Council come to an informed decision on who to have represented behind the bench.
But we need your help!Which legends or members of the community (past or present) do YOU think should be represented? Many of you have lived in Stockbridge for a long time and know more about the history than the children could ever hope to so we need you to help us focus the children’s research.
How?Throughout the summer (from 1st August to 1st September), you will find nomination boxes in lots of the local retailers on the High street and in Longstock
and Leckford villages. If you can think of someone who would represent Stockbridge’s history (past or present), please pop their name on to a slip of paper with a few details to give our children a head start on researching them. You can vote on line at www.stockbridge-hampshire.org.uk.
What next?Once the school term is back in session, children will research each of the recommended individuals and present the Parish Council with a short biography of each person nominated.
The final decision! The Parish Council will then have the deciding vote on which 3 figures are chosen to be represented around the bench. To give you some ideas, we’ve thought of various groups that might have been influential in Stockbridge’s history:

King’s Somborne C of E School – Our new head-teacher
School governors are involved in many aspects of school life,
but perhaps one of the most significant tasks that they might be required undertake is the need to recruit a new head-teacher. In November 2011, this was the challenge that presented itself to the governors at King’s Somborne school, following Mr Winning’s decision to retire at the end of the academic year. I am delighted to be able to share with the broader community that in March 2012, following a very comprehensive recruitment and selection process we appointed Mrs Julie Way as our new head-teacher. There was therefore an inadvertent significance a couple of months later, behind one of the local press headlines about the schools successful OfSTED inspection which was entitled ‘Winning Ways’ !!
Mrs Way will join the school at the start of the new academic year in September and has been able to spend some time during the last few months getting to know the school, meeting children, staff, parents and governors.
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have been able to secure the appointment of such a high calibre candidate. Mrs Way brings a wealth of
experience in Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, to the role. This has been gained in a variety of roles including: international overseas school leadership positions, head of teacher training at University College Plymouth, in addition to primary school leadership and teaching experience as head-teacher, deputy head, class teacher and as an LSA. The experience and qualities that Mrs Way brings to this role will enable us to build on our ‘winning years’ and the strong foundations of ‘a good school with outstanding features’ to become an outstanding school in all aspects. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Way to King’s Somborne CofE School and I am sure that she will take the opportunity to introduce herself to readers in another article during the autumn term.

News From Wherwell Primary School
A highlight of the month was the Class 3 trip to London, which
took place in June. Pupils, staff and governors travelled to Tower Hamlets to visit the Marion Richardson School following on from their visit to Wherwell in March. For many the journey up to London was as much part of the adventure as the time at the host school. The children were all very excited when they assembled on a bright, sunny morning at Winchester Station. Mr Dellar and some of his pupils met us at Waterloo Station and guided us across London using the Underground and the Docklands Light Railway, even fitting in a brief photo opportunity at the Olympic Stadium. “ Is that a real palace?” exclaimed George, as we turned a corner and saw their four storey building of red brick towering above us. “Of course it is a real palace!” replied Ruby. Built in 1907 and now a Grade II listed building with nearly 500 pupils, the children were quick to notice the physical differences in comparison to our own rural school of 115 children. Some of the boys were very concerned to realise that the school had no field at all but they quickly relaxed when they spotted football being played on the other side of the playground. Others noticed that there was no woodland to explore or pond area to investigate, however they enjoyed playing on the climbing wall and exploring the playground trails and apparatus. Wherwell School PTA now have a shopping list of playground apparatus to get fundraising for! Any uncertainties about being in a large, urban school and any cultural differences
were quickly overcome as the children from both classes were soon chatting, running around and playing as if they were old friends. With both schools having the same blue uniform it soon became hard to tell which children belonged to which class. Almost too soon it was time to head home so goodbyes were said and promises made to continue with the exchange visits in the coming year.
Class 3’s teacher Mrs Collins, who organised the trip and whose cousin teaches at the Marion Richardson School, said of the day out “The children were so excited about the trip that, in order to make sure that it went ahead, they organised a cake sale to raise money towards the cost of the travel. We are all really proud of our children and how well they coped with the long day and with being in different environment”.
In the last half term of the school year the children were involved in many different activities both in school and offsite. Details of the things going on are on the school website along with photos and recent newsletters so do have a look. www.wherwell.hants.sch.uk

News from the Somborne Sessions
Following the brilliant, blasting finale to the first season of the Somborne
Sessions provided by power rock trio Virgil and the Accelerators (if you were there, you will certainly remember it!), our second season begins in slightly quieter style.
Cocos Lovers are a Kent- based band, fast becoming a favourite on the UK festival scene. Slick, multi- instrumental, with great harmonies and glorious melodies, the band plays a mix of traditional folk, African and Eastern rhythms, and with a touch of Deep South USA thrown in as well. An intriguing mix, this is another high quality act that the Sessions are really pleased to welcome to the Sombornes.
Cocos Lovers are performing at King’s Somborne Village Hall on
Saturday 22 September 2012. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8 pm start. As usual, tickets are £10 each if bought in advance either via Pay Pal on the web site (www.sombornesessions.co.uk) or from Doug Stammers on 01794 389192. (£12 on the door if seats still available.) The Village Hall is just off the main A3057 road running through King’s Somborne village. The postcode is SO20 6PP.
Keep an eye on local press for details of future acts in the Somborne Sessions 2012- 13 season, or check out the web site for information on what’s coming up at your local venue bringing you the best of live music at a great price.
Stockbridge AmateurDramatic Society - SADS
Theatres in Shakespeare's time were open-air affairs, but even the Swan
of Avon would have struggled with the atrocious weather the summer has been throwing at us. That's why the production by the Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society of Much Ado About Nothing which I attended on July 7th was switched at the last minute from its outside venue at the Burrow in Longstock to Stockbridge Town Hall.
Despite the change of plan, the 19 strong cast delivered a stellar performance of one of the Bard's best-loved comedies to a full house. Director Barry Webb had set the play in the Roaring 20s, a period that suits the plot twists and coruscating language of the Elizabethan text. There are many ensemble scenes in
this play, and director and cast are to be congratulated for making maximum use of the available space, with actors sprinting up the aisles to make their entrances. It would be wrong to highlight individual performances, but Vanessa Sharpe as the feisty Beatrice and Anthea Coulson as the bumbling watchman Dogberry were both outstanding.
It was a also very heartening to note the large proportion of younger people in the audience. Shakespeare has a reputation for being difficult, but to see a play brought to life by a group as talented and dedicated as this is a joy.
SADS autumn production will be an English translation of Jean Anouilh's Ring Around the Moon in late November.

Summer Vegetableswith Haloumi Cheese
METHOD Set the oven 180C. On an oiled/buttered baking tray, lay out the mushrooms and
sprinkle with some of the herbs. Roast briefly until just soft; season with salt and
pepper. Repeat this process with each vegetable until all have been cooked. You can also use either round slices of aubergine or artichoke hearts. All slices should be about 3mm thick . Use a very sharp knife or a mandoline.
Use either a terrine or ramequins, or tea cups (no mug!), one per person. Butter or oil them. Layer the vegetables and then put in a layer of cheese slices, top off with further layers of vegetables. Make sure that you slice the haloumi cheese thinly. You can use feta cheese, but it’s not as good; you do need a very hard cheese, which does not melt easily. Pack carefully and cover with foil. Next put in a tray with water (Bain-marie) and cook for 30 minutes. When cooked and almost cold, press down gently to remove any excess liquid from inside your vegetable terrine.
Put in the fridge to cool.
DRESSING • 250ml yoghurt• Fresh finely chopped mint• Juice of 1 lemon• A touch of cumin or coriander• Salt and pepperPlace everything in a bowl, mix with a stick blender, taste, strain through a sieve. The dressing is now ready to serve with the terrine.
• 1 dessert spoon finely chopped garlic• 1 dessert spoon finely chopped rosemary (no stem) leaves only• 1 dessert spoon ground cumin or coriander seeds• 1 dessert spoon chopped fresh thyme • A cup of clarified butter or olive oil• Salt/pepper• 4 large black mushrooms sliced in three round discs each• 2 medium courgettes, sliced lengthwise, about 5/6 slices each. Do not use the first and last slices with the skin as they are the wrong shape• 1 tin of peeled red peppers (quick option) 4 peeled peppers needed• 3mm slices aubergine or artichoke hearts • Haloumi cheese thinly sliced

Our man at the Olympics
For someone working in the sports and cultural sector the London Bid to stage the Olympics was like winning the lottery – mixed feelings of huge pleasure, fear and expectations which bound you
into the wonderful ambition of doing something BIG on a GLOBAL scale in the UK. Yes, as usual we joked about it, finding many things to laugh about including our never ending carping about the cost, legacy, and traffic. The long lead-in time was essential to deliver the ambition but in some ways it made us all feel that it was a "long way off", hence we could forget about it, thinking more about England's football prospects, tennis and the Queen’s Jubilee. But when the "flame" arrived in the South West of England and the "torch relay" with its many human stories started, suddenly it was on our doorstep with thousands of people turning out in the rain. When, nearly two years ago I applied to join up as a volunteer for the Games the prospect seemed fairly unreal - it was done on- line, seemed straightforward and then went completely silent. Eventually I was interviewed by a very pleasant young man, after which I again heard nothing for many months until I was asked to attend a fairly large training event at Wembley Arena - this was more like a festival with Eddie Izzard doing a turn and several thousand people struggling through the snow. This experience did two things for me; one was to show me in very practical terms that the whole of the UK seemed to have volunteered - people of all ages, colours and experiences were brought together for this single purpose. The second was more direct, in that I was just one of several thousand people, having to take instructions and buckle down to "doing what I was told". The people who were doing the training were impressive, in that it was done efficiently often by people who had been involved in previous Games. The "Gamesmakers"-us volunteers- were now being distributed,
uniformed and slotted into jobs involving everything from venue management, cleaning & catering, to looking after the "Olympic family"- a truly complex undertaking! So on a recent rainy Sunday afternoon it was time to have my first real insight into what I had let myself into. I walked through the glass canyons of Westfield gradually getting closer to the Olympic Park. We went through the now all too familiar routines imported from any major international airport, supervised it seemed by very young looking members of the uniformed services. Once through I was struck by the sheer scale of what was before me. The stadium, the lanes of white walkways, Anish Kapoor’s fantastic construction, the Aquatics Centre, with the first ever bespoke Water Polo arena and more. The Hampshire trees looked great - I think Hillers got the contract for this and the landscaping looks really well established after all the rain! It was too much to take in as well as trying to find where I was supposed to go - I with two others walked to various entrances only to be re-directed to other places. It will certainly take me a few more visits to the site to get familiar with just where everything is - my only hope is that I will find my destination when I do my first morning shift! I was struck that the senior venue people that spoke to us had strong Australian accents -yes they had first-hand experience of the Sydney Games. On moving finally into the areas I would be working in, two senior people went over the detail of what I was expected to do, were knowledgeable, appreciative, kind and very human.
I had a real sense of being a young boy again on the first day of secondary school - confused but excited as to what is yet to come. Yinnon Ezra, MBE

Mountbatten school pupils, Beata Dunne and Emily White, have
triumphed in a regional cookery competition held between secondary schools in Hampshire and West Sussex. In total, eight top young cooks aged between 12-14 years from Hampshire and West Sussex battled it out at the finals to become the 2012 Create and Cook competition champions. With ingredients from the South Downs and Sussex coast, Hampshire’s chalk-fed streams, farms and fruit orchards, all the young cooks had designed menus which showcased their region’s local produce, which is the focus of the Create and Cook Competition. The final was held at Newlyns Farm Cookery School near Hook.
The winning duo, Beata and Emily from The Mountbatten School in Romsey wowed the

judges with their delicious Rosary goats’ cheese and red onion tart followed by a crème brulee with homemade shortbread and berries. Phil Ponsonby, Chief Operating Officer for Food Retail at the Southern Co-operative, which sponsors the competition said: "It was very difficult to judge as the standard from all schools was so high but on the day, Emily and Beata were our overall winners as their menu was cooked to perfection.”
Beata and Emily won £1,000 for their school food technology department, a framed copy of their recipes which have been professionally styled and photographed and a master class with Executive Chef Andy Mackenzie, one of the founders of the competition, in his kitchen at Lainston House Hotel near Winchester. Mucking out is one of the messiest and smelliest jobs at a wildlife
hospital and the arrival of dozens of baby hedgehogs over the past few weeks means carers are being swept off their feet.
“It’s just been too wet for the adults – there’s a lot of sickly ones around – they’re just not strong enough to care for their young and we have been inundated with orphans,” said Kristy Willis, wildlife clinical assistant, one of only three staff at HART Wildlife Rescue.
“Hedgehogs like it to be damp so they can forage for slugs but it’s just too sodden for them to find food – some of their nests are getting flooded too. They like to nest in messy gardens and their babies are often discovered when people tidy up. It’s quite fitting that they like playing with a brush so
very regularly but curl up each time we try. Once they’ve been brought back to health and are clear of infections we often put them together with other non-siblings in groups. But it has been a struggle to find room for them all and without the help of our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to manage to clean out all the cages, feed and medicate them.
“If people find baby hogs they shouldn’t touch them unless they are completely sure the
Wildlife carers swept off their feet
much,” she added. Eight hoglets were brought to the centre at Medstead, near Alton, in one day last week. “Some of these little guys might not make it – they were probably only born last night and are very cold. We’re warming them up on a heat mat and have already started trying to feed and treat them. My friends don’t understand how I can take animals home and feed them through the night – but it’s normal for us here," said Kristy.
The young hedgehogs are fed a puppy formula for the first few weeks and are then moved on to rusks and later cat food.
“The hoglets don’t open their eyes for 14 days and are only able to curl up in a ball once they are 10 days old. This is the worst age for them to arrive with us as they need feeding
parents are not returning and please don’t feed them bread and milk – it’s an old wives’ tale. Bread is too bloating and they’re lactose intolerant so cow’s milk is bad for them.”
For more information about hedgehogs and the work of HART Wildlife Rescue, visit www.hartwildlife.org.uk
Perhaps mistaking the brush for their mum these three, orphaned hoglets take comfort in a clean dustpan while their cages are cleaned out.

A new beginning for Gordon Ramsay Protegee, James Durrant
Summer 2012 heralded a new beginning for chef, James Durrant
who saw his life-long ambition come true when he bought, renovated and opened his own restaurant – The Plough Inn just outside of Andover in Hampshire (Longparish, Andover, Hampshire, SP11 6P – www.theploughinn.info)
A protégée of Gordon Ramsay, James worked within Gordon Ramsay Holdings for nine years, having started at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay as a Junior Sous Chef. James soon moved on to Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's as Senior Sous Chef and ended his long and successful career with the group as Executive Chef at Maze working directly in hand with Jason Atherton.
Along the way James has been instrumental in securing the success of these iconic restaurants working within a team that reached Michelin status more than once. It is this amalgamation of invaluable experience that has always driven James to wanting to open his own restaurant and following a brief makeover The Plough is now firmly open for business.Entirely in tune with what people want to eat James endeavours to deliver a menu to suit everyone where a
concise collection of seasonal dishes give a nod to James’ accomplished style offering starters such as fried duck egg, English asparagus, bacon and burnt butter vinaigrette and oak smoked sea trout, avocado, horseradish, Jersey royals, brown shrimp and caper dressing. Mains include braised shoulder of lamb, onion puree, red onions, salt marsh mutton, shepherd’s pie and pan fried bream, Jersey royals, baby squid, samphire, squid vinaigrette whilst desserts offer rhubarb sundae and vanilla rice pudding, raspberry jam, raspberry ripple ice cream
Now, with a young family in tow James actively sought to make a life for himself outside London but not too far. Trains direct from Waterloo can have you in Andover in an hour and taking a seat in The Plough after only a short ten minute taxi ride from the station.
Surrounded by a verdant garden, al fresco dining is firmly on the menu and ambitions to build rooms above the pub are soon to be realised.
An ideal spot for any day of the week, The Plough is an exciting opening for the South and a perfect example of where great cooking can be found beyond London – well worth the short trip out.
