  • Common tests may typically used to characterise materials for injection moulding:

The micro injection moulding machine ‘formicaPlast’, developed by the Kunststoff-Zentrum in

Leipzig gGmbH (KUZ), allows the processing of the lowest shot weights – even with dwell time-

sensitive materials. Thus, it is possible to produce injection-moulded microformed parts under very

precise process specifications. This is beneficial for the material development and for the elabora-

    tion of micro-technical solutions.

    • Extensive test specimen quantity of less than 50 g of material, even with varying test specimen geometries

    • Efficient process investigation of cost-intensive materials• Comparative testing of new materials from laboratory or pilot production• Efficient and fast development of recommendations for the injection moulding

technology • Initial assessment of the performance characteristics, chemical resistance,

adhesiveness, etc. by analysing micro test specimens• Support in material selection for micro products

    Why micro test specimens?

    • Dynamic differential calorimetry (DSC) with 2 heating runs (Result: TG, TSCH, enthalpy)

    • Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) (Result: coefficient of expansion, shrinkage)

    • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) (Result: e.g. dynamic material behaviour, stiffness-

    temperature curve)

    • Determination of the micro-hardness of injection-moulded micro test plates at room tem-

    perature (RT)

    • Tensile test on micro specimens on the scale 1/12 with 5 specimens per batch (Result:

strength, Young‘s modulus, properties may only be used for comparative purposes due to

    the scaling effect)

In addition to thermoplastics (including high-temperature and bio-degradable materials), the range of

materials usable for micro injection moulding includes thermosets, rubbers, solid and liquid silicones.

Furthermore, various experimental materials are possible to be processed granulate, powder or flakes.

The test specimens are designed for three different mould concepts of the ‘formicaPlast’ micro injection

moulding machine: for the main tool in one and two component design and for a quick-change tool. The

1-component master tool and the quick-change tool allow the possibility of cavity pressure measure-

ments close to the sprue. Various test specimens may be produced out of a single material batch without

the risk of thermal degradation using the quick-change tool.
