Real Life Tessellations

M.C. EscherMaurits Cornelis Escher (1898‐1972), a Dutch artist, created 

unique works of art that explore and exhibit many mathematical ideas.  He used translations, reflections, rotations, and glide reflections in many of his works.

the following shapes.

CP:  You will construct one tessellation template for three of the following shapes.

PART 2 is due Friday, February 26, 2016.  It will count as one test grade.

You will cover an 11‐by‐17 piece of paper with tessellations.  You can use one of the templates that you turned in from 

Part 1 or a new one that you create.

1.  Start with a square.

2.  Draw a designon one side of the square.

3.  Cut the design out &translate it across tothe opposite side of the square.  Securewith tape...NOOVERLAPPING!

Translation Tessellation (HARD)

1.  Start with a square.

2.  Draw a designon one side of the square,translate it tothe other side,and secure.

3.  Draw another designon the adjacent sideof the square, translate it to the opposite side, and secure. 

Glide Reflection Tessellation

1.  Start with a square.

2.  Draw a design on one side ofthesquare.

3.  Cut the designpiece out andtranslate itacross to theopposite sideof the square.

Reflect (flip) the cut piece.

4.  Secure thepiece with tapeto the oppositeside of thesquare.

**This pattern     needs to be     reflected as      it is traced.
