TEFL is the acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In simplewords, it can be described as English language instruction for non-nativeEnglish speakers. You will also see other acronyms like TESOL - TeachingEnglish to Speakers of Other Languages and teaching ESL - English as aSecond Language.

TEFL is one of the fastest growing fields of education on a global level.Native and non native TEFL certificate holders have thousands ofprofessional opportunities for teaching English abroad in Asia, Europe,Latin America, and the Middle East.

In practical terms, when these acronyms are applied to the field ofteaching English abroad, there is little or no difference between ‘TEFL’ and‘TESOL’. They are both acronyms that for all intents and purposes mean thesame thing: teaching the universal language to non-native speakers. In thevast majority of cases, a ‘TEFL certification’ and a ‘TESOL certification’ arethe same and the terms are interchangeable.

Interviews: Do you already know where you want to teach or are you open tooptions worldwide? It is important to know the local interview process for thecountry you want to teach. In Asian countries like Korea and Japan, you’ll interviewin advance from home and line up your English teaching job prior to headingoverseas. In some other parts of the world, like Argentina, Spain, and Vietnamrecruiters prefer to conduct face-to-face interviews.

However, if you’re on a budget and want to teach in a location where mostinterviews are conducted in person, you can certainly take an online class and usethe money you save, to fund your travel and other start-up costs required to supportyourself while you appear for interviews and get a job. This requires traveling toanother country without having a job in your kitty in advance, but if you’re properlyprepared and time your arrival around major hiring seasons, there’s no reason whyyou won’t be successful.

Your timeline: When do you want to go abroad? Are you looking to head abroad assoon as possible? Are you planning to head out in a few months or in a couple of years? In-class TEFL classes will be completed in just 3 weeks when compared to 11-13 weeks for online TEFL classes and is the fastest way to get your accredited certification. In other words, the classroom courses are full-time and intense; it’s basically boot camp for English teachers and should be considered a full-time commitment for those 3 weeks.

On the contrary, the online class is completed part-time, typically 10-12 hours perweek over a period of 11 weeks. This part-time course structure makes it ideal forfull-time college students who want to knock out their TEFL class before graduationor for working professionals who want to still earn while getting TEFL certified.Ultimately your timeline will depend on a variety of factors including where you planto teach; hiring seasons; your TEFL class and other factors like whether you need toget a visa processed.

Hiring standards and criteria vary country to country. Key factors likedegree, experience and citizenship requirements are important considerations whenapplying for TEFL (even with a TEFL certification).

How much money do I need to earn while teaching English abroad? Will I be happyjust to break even and cover my expenses? Or, do I need to make enough to saveextra money to pay for student loans or extra travel?

In most countries, first-time English teachers make enough to cover their bills andlead a comfortable life, but lack realistic expectations of saving some money at theend of the month. This is a typical scenario in Europe, Latin America and in NorthAfrican Arab countries like Egypt and Morocco. If you need to make enough to save$200 to $1,000 a month after expenses, consider opportunities in Asian countrieslike Korea, Taiwan and Japan, or perhaps teaching English in Persian Gulf countrieslike Saudi Arabia.
