TEACHING ENGLISH IN Asia

Asia is currently one of the most popular regions to teach English in the world.

With a consistently strong demand for English teachers, there are always plenty of job opportunities to go around. And thanks to high salaries and an extremely low cost of living, English teachers in Asia can typically live comfortably while still saving a significant portion (30-35% on average) of their paycheck.

And with a fascinating and unique culture and some of the most sought after travel destinations in the world, it’s no surprise that LanguageCorps programs in Cambodia, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam are growing in popularity every year.

“I’m loving life with LanguageCorps. The TESOL class was very thorough, and I learned way more than expected.”

The Demand for English teachers in Europe has always been strong, but growing immigration within the European Union has created rapid cultural integration and, demand has never been stronger.

Many people dream of traveling around Europe, and teaching English abroad can be an excellent way to make that dream a reality. Historically popular tourist destinations like Spain and Italy are great places to teach, but less traveled regions like Russia can be excellent choices too.

Teachers are paid well for their time in Europe, but with a higher cost of living, you won’t be able save as much as you would in Asia. But, most teachers are able to cover month to month living expenses, so teaching abroad is a great way to finance living in Europe!

“One of the best decisions I ever made!”

Our programs in Central and South America are popular options for people who want to learn or improve their Spanish or Portuguese, or who are interested in immersing themselves in a Latin culture.

A mix of old world elegance, indigenous cultures, breath-taking scenery and tropical beaches make our Latin American locations, very attractive.

While the cost of living is higher than you’ll find in Asia, teachers are still able to live well by local standards - dining out, traveling, and enjoying all that the region has to offer.

“ Teaching has been great! I love my job and the clients I work with. Thank you for giving me this opportunity! ”

Turkey

LanguageCorps offers TESOL Certification and job search assistance in Morocco and Turkey, two up-and-coming destinations for English teachers abroad.

Morocco and Turkey are both fascinating destinations on their own, but living in the region also positions you well for travel to Western Europe should you ever feel the need.

Demand for English teachers in the Middle East is growing rapidly, and salaries in the region are very competitive. Teachers in Morocco and Turkey can expect to cover living expenses comfortably, but in addition, with a LanguageCorps TESOL Certification, one can take advantage of lucrative teaching opportunities in a wide variety of locations throughout the Middle East!

“The course went very well, and I received a 2 year teaching contract right away. LC helped me in many ways, and I look forward to my new job!”

Megan, Morocco SEP 2014

“ The course was great! It was definitely a worthwhile (although rigorous) experience. The Italian lady that the school set me up with is absolutely lovely, and I have continued to live with her since the course, as she is a wonderful conversation partner and a great cook (providing mini lessons with every meal)—really like a mother to me here. All in all I cannot say enough good things about the school here, their teachers, and the school’s owner. It has been a wonderful experience and I am so happy that I chose the TESOL course to start it off. It’s beautiful here, absolutely unique from the rest of Italy with a really interesting history and culture, and breathtaking scenery. Thank you for everything.”

Jenna, Italy (Sardinia)

“ I absolutely loved the course. The LanguageCorps staff were everything I could have hoped for and more–friendly, welcoming, well-trained in their area, and familiar with Phnom Penh and Southeast Asia. The people I trained with were some of the coolest I’ve ever met, and now I have friends all over Asia. It was a very good month.”

Details & FAQs

What are the Accommodations?Accommodations during training are included with the TESOL Plus, Flagship, TeachChina and TeachTaiwan programs. In China, many schools include housing for the duration of your time abroad while others offer salary levels to compensate.

For programs where accommodations during training are not included, we can arrange them for you for an additional fee. Housing is generally in a comfortable, shared apartment or a home-stay with a local family. You are also welcome to arrange your own housing if you would prefer.

Following training, most people arrange their own apartment-style housing once they know where they will be living and working more permanently. Your school and local staff will be happy to help you navigate the housing market, and many schools will provide housing.

How long will I have to commit to teaching abroad with LanguageCorps? The only firm time commitment is the four-week TESOL training and certification program. Following training, it’s up to you how long you wish to remain abroad teaching!

6-12 months is average, but many people remain abroad longer than that, and short-term opportunities come up as well. Some employers are only interested in teachers that can make a long-term commitment, but some are okay with short-term situations.

The exceptions are China and Taiwan, which typically require a year-long contractual teaching commitment

When is the Best Time to Go Abroad? Many jobs teaching English abroad are with private language institutes that don’t necessarily operate on a semester schedule, so optimal hiring times aren’t always what you would expect!

While in some countries there are peak hiring seasons, in most, language institutes hire year round, and we can help teachers go abroad whenever is convenient for them if they are flexible.  Jobs are typically available in numerous countries every month of the year.

What is Job Search Assistance?During the four-week TESOL training program you will be given job search assistance to obtain a paid EFL teaching assignment.

Local staff will provide:

• Resume (CV) development

• Contacts at local hiring schools.

• Interview prep.

• Contract negotiation advice.

With that information, you can set up interviews and conduct the actual job search, and people who are persistent and flexible are able to find positions.  Schools very often contact the training center when they are looking for teachers.  We advise that participants plan for it to take a few weeks to get a job, though most teachers get jobs sooner, and some get jobs lined up before the course ends.

Do I have to work in the area where I train? LanguageCorps will always do our best to help you out with contacts to get you started in any area that we operate, and opportunity abounds in a wide variety of diverse regions. The reality is that job search assistance will be most useful during and following your onsite training course, but we will always be a phone call or email away if you need help!

What Kind of Visa Do I Need?In all locations, staff will work with you prior to departure to make sure that all logistics are in place for your trip abroad. Visa requirements vary by location, and requirements change from time to time, but below is a general outline:

China Work visa arranged prior to departure.

Cambodia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam Work visa arranged upon arrival.

Europe Tourist visa or student visa, depending on location.

Latin America Tourist or cultural exchange visa, some schools will sponsor work permits.

Middle East Tourist visa in Turkey, schools in Morocco will sponsor work permit.

All programs are for ages 18+. A completed bachelor’s degree is typically required in China, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. In most other locations, a degree is not required.
