Academic freedom and responsibility
Students are relatively independent and free to make decisions on their studies (timetables, minors, the interest of research)
However, students must also take responsibility of the progress of their studies
All students have the same basic rights guaranteed by administration: objectivity, lawfulness, equality
Academic freedom and responsibility
University students use free education services provided by state → no consumer/employment contract → no insurance provided by the university (exception: practical teaching situation, e.g. lab work, field course)
Academic community
University students in Finland are not considered customers but equal members of the academic community. Both the staff and the students have collective aims in many ways.
Consequently, it is usually easy to approach the staff (please respect the appointment times). The members of staff think that it is important that students take up issues they find problematic.
Students are also an important part of the decision making processes in the university Student organizations and the University's units often have well-
established practices for cooperation through which the students influence the development of their study environment.
Demarcation of study right Study time is demarcated since 1.8.2005 Targeted completion time for Bachelor’s degree is three and for
Master’s degree two academic years. Students accepted only for a Master's degree have the right to
complete the degree two years past the targeted completion time 2 + 2 academic years.
Demarcation begins on the academic year when the study place has been accepted
The student can register as non-attending for four semesters (= two academic years) which are not included in the study time
There are some legislative reasons that can extend the study time, e.g. maternal leave during studentship

Student services There are versatile student services available to support the
students both in academic and social matters
The rule of subsidiarity: the most needed services are available close to the students' everyday activities: Coordinator of the Master's Programme Study Advisor of the Faculty

Financing the Studies1. The State financial aid for students who are not Finnish
citizens:
Two criteria must be met: 1. living in Finland on a permanent basis (registered in the
population register system), and
2. the purpose of the stay must be other than studying (for example work, family ties or return migration)
The decision on the status of the student is made by other authorities than university.
2. Working
