Every year when we start to compile the information for the Tertiary Art Courses Supplement, theres the question, I wonder what will be different this year? And looking back over the past 12 years, weve seen considerable change and evolution in the creative sector more institutions, more diverse course options, the adoption of new technology, and a greater degree of interaction with the marketplace, as art schools and future employers map out the future needs of this dynamic industry. So, whats new in 2015 and beyond? Election years always bring new promises and policies, and this year is no exception. In January, Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce caused some consternation amongst art educators when he said: Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are increasingly important for growing and sustaining New Zealands economic competitiveness, and this was echoed in the ministrys Occupation Outlook 2014 report, in which only three of the 50 featured occupations were drawn from creative industries actors, graphic/web designers and industrial designers perhaps a wake-up call for the creative sector?Nevertheless, we believe the sector is still in good heart, and while competition for students has given rise to course

restructuring, and some programmes being discontinued, many new courses and qualifications are being offered for the first time in 2015. These include the new Bachelor of Creative Industries (BCI) at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and Unitecs new Bachelor of Creative Enterprise (BCE), both of which have been developed in liaison with prospective employers, to ensure graduates enter employment with the skills to match the market.Another welcome creative partnership was forged recently when WelTech and Whitireia announced they are jointly developing a new creative technologies and arts centre in Wellington, with film and television, performing arts, digital media, visual arts and design, jewellery and photography among the courses that will be moving to the new centre. So, in spite of Steven Joyces creative blind spot, there are still plenty of positive signs out there and the courses and programmes listed in this supplement will help you chart your future in this exciting sector.

    Creative collaboration in the Bay

The new Bachelor of Creative Industries (BCI) degree at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic allows students to specialise in the creative area theyre most passionate about, while acquiring diverse collaborative skills to meet the employment needs of the creative workplace.Artist and BCI tutor Kelcy Taratoa believes the collaboration aspect of the degree is paramount, We are sharing with one another; I might be the person standing at the front of the room but everyone has something to contribute its all about collaboration.I love the creative energy you feel in the room and being around enthusiastic and hungry, driven creative people. There is

a lot of diversity within the creative fields; its not any one thing its the vibe. I love talking about creative ideas, exploring the different ways of seeing and thinking, and doing, says Kelcy. For more information on courses visit boppoly.ac.nz

Zoe Knighton has a way of engaging with paint that is both unique and hands-on. Currently studying towards her Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) with The Learning Connexion in Lower Hutt, Zoe's efforts this year have already won her two 'People's Choice' awards at the end-of-term exhibitions. Palette knives and fingers help her to create beautiful textures in her oil paintings, and she is not afraid to take risks. A recent, virtually life-sized landscape-format portrait of her brother has caused much comment; and a real sense of discombobulation for the viewers!Zoe was nominated for the NZ Art Show's 'Emerging Artist' award, a well-contested competition entered by many tertiary institutes. Although not selected as one of the four main finalists she was thrilled to hear that, due to the close nature of the judging, she had been invited to exhibit her works alongside the other finalists. For information to enrol, call 0800 278 769, or visit tlc.ac.nz

Dynamic new spaces for media arts in Hamilton

Changing the flow Jeweller quickly off the mark

Wintecs School of Media Arts recently opened new facilities in Hamiltons CBD, located in the Alexandra Street creative precinct. These provide the Schools visual arts, interior design, fashion design, music and postgraduate students with improved spaces to learn and show their work.

The new visual arts area, christened Block X, includes larger studios for painting and sculpture students, as well as a spacious central workspace. Students have access to a gallery, drawing studio, dedicated spraypaint room, computers, and a full-size screenprinting exposure unit, complementing existing digital labs and specialist spaces.Staff and students are enjoying settling into the new building, said Visual Arts team manager Sam Cunnane. Its a vibrant, exciting environment, offering some great opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary projects.Up the road, Block Z houses facilities for interior design, fashion design and music. Fashion design will become a specialist

endorsement with the Bachelor of Media Arts from 2015.Visit wintec.ac.nz for more information on courses.

Unitec recently asked employers what they want from graduates of 21st century studies in the creative sector, with feedback indicating a need for people who are agile and adaptable with their creative and technical talent. The newly developed Bachelor of Creative Enterprise

(BCE) has been created around the desire to provide Unitec graduates with a competitive edge in the creative sectors while allowing them the time, space and support to develop their own personal practice. The BCE offers

a unique first year experience that provides students with foundation knowledge in areas such as creative thinking, professional practice, digital technology and communication, and storytelling. Students will progress to specialist pathways in diverse areas such as transmedia, design, business and the applied arts. Those interested should attend the information evening on 28 August from 4pm to 7pm, at Unitec Mt Albert campus, Squash Courts, Gate 3, Carrington Rd, Mt Albert, Auckland.Visit unitec.ac.nz for more course information.

AUT Art + Designs Innovation in Virtual Production Group critically engages with a range of emerging 3D digital production technologies, processes and practices. The term virtual production has been coined recently by the visual effects industry to describe a seamlessly 3D digital workflow, which allows for an interactive, and integrative process from preproduction to postproduction. This working approach has ground-breaking possibilities both for the animation, visual effects and gaming industries, but also in its expanded application to a range of other practices and disciplines. In 2014 Art + Design implemented a new undergraduate curriculum and first-year students will work with leading researchers to explore the wider application through a number of new minor study pathways available to them in the School of Art + Design, including Motion Capture, Games and Play Design, and Cinematic Arts minors, in addition to the Digital Design major in the Bachelor of Design. Visit aut.ac.nz for more course information.

Melissa Anderson completed MITs Diploma in Advanced Jewellery (level 6) in 2013. In her final year of study, Melissa developed a unique range of fashion jewellery inspired by the Victorian memento mori tradition. These pieces have quickly found favour among the jewellery-buying public, and recently led to an invitation to show a collection of pieces in the newly opened Silver Project Space at Aucklands Whitespace Gallery. Currently, Melissa is developing a new range of pieces for inclusion in a soon-to-be launched range of jewellery featuring the work of young New Zealand designers. This more commercial work will complement the one-off pieces she has become known for and attract a more diversified audience for Melissas creations. Melissa says that MITs programmes provided her with the skills and industry connections she needed to successfully position her creative work in the right commercial context.
