EDITORIAL
The deadline for this issue was 10 June and writing this
then, the month fell rather short of 'flaming June'.However by the time Willing/mm News is posted throughyour letterboxes, June might have lived up to its name. But
what of July? Whatever the weather might have in store for
us, there is plenty entertainment ahead. The Olympics may
not begin till 27 July but the build—up began many moons
ago and until it actually starts sports fans will be able to
enjoy Euro 2012 and of course Wimbledon And for those
with other interests?
Fortunately, there are alternatives on offer. The 118th
Season of Henry Wood Promenade concerts begins on
13 July as does the Cambridge Summer Festival which
offers Open Studios, the Folk Festival, the Summer Music
Festival as well as the Shakespeare Festival.
Many will also be going on holiday or packing in
preparation. Whatever you're planning to do, enjoy!
Church bells - The OlympicsChurch Bells all over the country will ring on Friday,27July to celebrate the start of the Olympics. The bells of
St Mary & All Saints, Willingham will ring from 8 00 —
8 30 am.

OLD WILLINGHAMWith all the celebrations
for the (Lueen's Diamond
Jubilee at the start of JuneI was reminded of a
tradition in past years.
During the Golden Jubileein 2002 all the Villagechildren were given a
'Jubilee mug'. In this
month's picture we see the
children receiving a souvenir mug (and a spoon) for the
Ogeen's Coronation in 1953. I wonder if anyone in the
Village still has their mug. The lady giving out the gifts is
Annie Gadsby who very likely would have remembered

° Saturday, 14]uly — a visit to the enchanting and superb20th century informal garden created by Beth Chatto and
her husband, near Colchester, Essex. This garden is
mentioned in Rae Spencer-Jones' book: 1001 Gardemyoumart ree éefiire you die. When you have been, you will
realise why.The work began in 1960 in the driest county in England
on windswept wasteland consisting of arid, clay, gravel and
poor soils with both sun and shade set between two farms.
The gardens are set in two acres. There are goodrefreshment facilities and an excellent plant nursery.

WILLINGHAM NEWS July 2012
Pastoral Letter
The Jubilee may well have faded in your memory but as I
write it is fresh in my mind. I am a great fan of Cromwell
but Iam neither a Republican nor a Royalist. I thoroughlyenjoyed watching the
II
Jubilee celebrations and
particularly the Thames Pageant. This was largely due to
my cockney roots. Seeing London, especially St Paul's
Cathedral was very moving. I was ordained deacon (Greekfor 'servant') there on 27 June I 998. The great doors at the
front of the cathedral, being so tall and heavy, are only ever
opened for two groups of people: royalty and those beingordained. What a tremendous privilege that felt, especiallyas great shafts of sunlight flooded in and bathed our walkdown the central aisle.
During the service, the Bishop of London, with a great
booming voice, lifted his hands to ordain us — dramaticallyaccompanied by flashes of lightning and claps of thunder.
Sunshine, showers and rain bows came later as we gatheredfor photos on the steps outside. Later, robes in suitcase, I leftto find the coach containing my family and friends. Theheavens opened, and a large hand grabbed my suitcase.
'Let me carry that' boomed a familiar voice. Seeing thevoice's owner wasn't wearing a coat Iprotested. "No, allow
me' he boomed, informing me that, despite now being the
Bishop of London, he too had once been ordained a deacon, and, "Once a deacon, always a deacon'. I remember beingembarrassed because he was getting soaked, I remember
the faces in the coach, some laughing at my
embarrassment, and some staring with incredulity.Mostly, though, I remember his words, speaking ofhumility, duty and service,- characteristics exhibited byChrist that should be the hallmarkof every Christian.
I have tremendous respect for the duty and service theQueen has given for sixty years. Greater by far is my
devotion to the one who loved me enough to die for me. He
loves you that much too. If you want to experience thatlove for yourself, come along to one of the vi llage's churchservices. I cannot promise great doors opening or shafts ofsunlight lighting your way but rain is a possibility!
Holman Hunt's 'Light of the world' (in St Paul's) showsChrist knocking on the door ofour hearts. There's no handleon the outside,- He only enters if we open the door frominside. Great shafts of 'Son-light' always accompany the
opening of that door as He comes to reign within us.

Library News
Friends of Willingham LibraryAt the AGM last month we talked about new initiatives to
encourage more use of the Library and came up with the
following ideas that make use of the unique facilities that
the library has to offer, and complement what is alreadygoing on in the village:
° Storytimes for pre-school children, using materials
provided by the library service' Providing help and mentoring for novices using the
free internet facilities° Researching family history via the free access to
ancestry.comAll of these will have to be run by volunteers so if you are
interested, either as a provider or user, please tell one of the
librarians or contact Friends of Willingham Library on
260780 or at [email protected]. Please also let us know if
you have any other ideas for activities in the library, or
would like to rent the building for a club etc.

the first Wednesday of each month from 2 pm to 3 30 pm.There are speakers, tea/coffee/biscuits and a chance to

Sign up for the Children's Summer Reading Challenge
towards
It's not too late to come to the Library and sign up for the
Summer Reading Challenge. This year's theme is StoryLab — 'an imaginative adventure that knows no bounds'.
The brainchild of Professor Cortex, Story Lab is an
amazing hi—tech 'Story HQ that attracts stories from all
over the world, sending them spinning throughout the city— and beyond! Professor Cortex has asked the Story Lab
kids: Will, Rani, Evie and Lex to recover three lost items
and bring them back to the Story Lab. Can the children find
the bronze coin, silver mirror and gold medal and boost the
imagination of the Story Lab?
If you are under 16 and would like to volunteer to help us
with the challenge, please come to the library and have a
chat about how you can join in the fun.
Willingham Combined CharityNot many people will be aware of Willingham Combined
Charity which has been in existence since 1505 and was
initially called a Pauper Charity. It now consists of several
Charities. The first was set up in 1505 by Henry Greaves
to help defray taxes levied on the poorest inhabitants. The
house he left was called the Town House and was situated
in Church Street where the almshouses now stand. Nine
cottages were later built for letting to poor women. In 1965
Henry Greaves' land was sold and the cottages demolished
in 1962 and 1972. The almshouses were still in use in 1982.
However, they were later sold and are now in private hands.
The land at the rear of the properties is in use as allotments.
In 1615 the second charity was formed by the Rector Dr
William Smith, Provost of King's College, Cambridge who
gave 8 acres at Westmeadow from which the income was to
maintain the almshouses and the nine cottages. In 1693 Robert Osborne gave a rent charge of 3 /4d
(approx just under 15 %p) for the poor. Not much is known
about this charity which was lost by 1938.
The fourth charity was set up by Samuel Saywell, in
1709. He left half of the rent of Queenholme Droveway to
the poor of Willingham. In 1876 the income was £5.
After the amalgamation of the charities into WillinghamParochial Charities in 1876, (lucenholme Droveway and
the Reverend Smith's land were sold and his cottages and
the Town House were demolished.
In 1952, Hilda Smith left 11 acres, stock and money and
land at Houghton to build the Josiah Smith Homes in
memory of her father. These six bungalows on Over Road
were built in 1967. The Josiah Smith Homes and
Willingham Parochial Charities remained separate but from
1964 have been administered by the same trustees.
In 1874 the list of trustees was as follows — the names are
still familiar in the village today:Ingle Few Thoday (merchant), Josiah Smith (farmer),
Edward Few (merchant), Robert Sage Ellis (surgeon),Barford Pyke (farmer), James Ingle (merchant), Robert
Osborn (farmer), John Frohock (farmer), Edward Gleaves
(farmer).Today the Charity still survives and is overseen by
trustees from the village. In the future it is hoped that the

cannot wait until the next available routine appointment. They are not booked with a specific doctor and there may
be a long wait to be seen. The emergency session is
becoming increasingly busy with non-urgent requests
causing delays not only in the surgery but for those patientsrequiring a visit. Please can we ask you to use emergency
appointments correctly? If your problem is a routine
matter which requires more time, the doctor will ask
you to make another appointment in a routine surgery.

Jubilee celebrations
Despite the rather wet weather, about 150 gathered at the
Baptist Church on Sunday, 3 June for a communitycelebration. We started the BigJubilee Lunch with a gracewritten specially for the occasion, and then tucked into a
BBQ Before watching the Thames Pageant, we sang God
Save The Queen and cut a special 'crown jewels' cake.
Afternoon tea was then served, with mountains of cakes!!!
Children enjoyed doing lots of crafts and painting one
another's faces red, white and blue!
Thank you to everyone who came along and watch out for
a slightly different event to celebrate the start of the
Olympics. . ..
Jubilee celebrations at
Willingham Primary School
The children enjoyed a day of celebrations includingmaking crowns, watching the Coronation footage from
1953, parading 'royal barges' that they had made and
playing traditional games. The school day was extended to
have a royal disco where Princes Charles and Harry were
seen, and indoor fireworks were let off. During the week
children and staff made a large wall hanging to remember
the occasion; it is over 8 metres long! Parents and friends
didn't miss out on the festivities, as the Willingham School
Association provided cream teas and a quiz about the
(been which raised over £250 for the school.
FULL CIRCLE
In the words of William Shakespeare, 'All's well that ends
well' and for myself and my daughter, Mrs Lisa McGinness
this could not be more apt. I'm referring to our recent
journey to Willingham. Through the kind courtesy of
Richard and Pat Law of Willingham, the two of us were
invited to stay in their home, Belvoir House, for two daysand we had ample opportunity to wander round this lovelylittle village. What was our quest you may ask? I journeyedfrom Trinidad and Tobago in the sunny Caribbean and Lisa
from Glasgow. Lisa had interfaced with Pat seeking to
expand our Family Tree and find its roots and it was here in
Willingham that we discovered the roots were deeplyembedded.
Although strangers, we and the Laws shared a common
bond — for we are all 'related' in our attachment to Belvoir
House, 21 Green Street. For Lisa and myself, this was the
home of our maternal ancestors; for Pat and Richard, this
was the home which his father had bought.Belvoir House was built by John Smith Junior in 1820 on
land that had been in the Smith family's possession since the
17005 and still bears the name Smith. His son, GrangerSmith and wife Jemima, subsequently inherited the house
and lived there with their children. Jemima was originally a
Read, also of Willingham. One of their daughters, Lavinia Smith, married Herbert
Bartholomew Lock Bennett of Kensington, London and
they had an only daughter, Hilda. One of their law student
lodgers was George Ramdeholl, who came from what was
then British Guiana. He and Hilda married and settled in
British Guiana. On the death of her husband,Lavinia journeyed out to live with her daughter and
family and died in Trinidad in 1945. I was her
grand—daughter. My mother was a great storyteller and as a child, I
heard stories of her mother's life in England and of
her relatives, among them the Granger Smith family. This thirst for knowledge of my heritage broughtme and my daughter Lisa to Willingham.
Pat Law was tireless in her efforts to make our tripworthwhile. We visited several grave sites in and around
Willingham over a two—day period. How moving it was to
see the family plot of great—grandfather Granger Smith
which accommodated the remains of several other family
members including his mother—in-law, Elizabeth Read. A
search among the grave sites rewarded us with that of
great—uncle Sidney Smith, the last Smith occupant of
Belvoir House; and an unexpected find at the very end of
our quest....that of great, great, great—grandfather JohnSmith Senior and great, great—grandfather, John Smith
Junior and their respective wives.
We also got a chance to meet with two elders of the
village, Mrs Janet Hart and Mr Paul Ingle who kindlyrecounted their experiences of old Willingham. At the end
of a most enjoyable evening, Lisa was presented with a deed
of a loan by Janet Smith, signed by great grandfather,Granger Smith, on 30 September 1879 hearing its originalstamps and seals. It had inadvertently been in Janet Hart's
possession for a number of years. Not to go unmentioned was the visit to great—
grandmother, Jemima Read Smith's ancestral home in
Rampton End which was made possible by Graham Mumby. He pointed out design aspects of the house and showed us
round the beautiful garden which he proudly tends.
All in all, it was a memorable experience enabling us to
come full circle with this chapter of our heritage, to see
something of this beautiful part of the country and to form
new bonds. Lisa and I left with a great deal of indebtedness
and gratitude to Richard and Pat Law for this fantastic
experience — one which many yearn for and so few are ever
able to achieve.
June Farinha, Trinidad & Tobago
I attach two photographs. The first shows the Smith familytaken in approximately 1890 and the second is of Lisa and
me in May 2012. We are sitting in exactly the same spot as
our Smith ancestors — by the garden door and are holdingthe original photograph.
WILLINGHAM NEWS July 2012 15
From the Parish Council
www.willingham-pc.org.uk
It was a pleasure to see a well—attended Annual Parish Meetingwith over fifty people present, and representatives from clubs
and groups, local councillors and police. Your Parish Council
has been working very hard in trying to involve more residents
in local issues. So thank you to all those who came along and
for those who didn't here is a flavour of some of the issues that
were raised in a lively meeting.Sergeant Paul Rogerson reported on the recent re—
structuring of the police force in South Cambridgeshireaimed at providing a more consistent and better service, and
on new initiatives on communications. He emphasised the
vital role the public play in helping to fight crime and
welcomed the recent initiatives to reintroduce neighbourhoodwatch schemes in Willingham, with special thanks to Mike
Tidball for agreeing to act as co—ordinator. Sergeant Rogersonalso reported positive progress in a number of areas, with
response times within five to ten minutes, an increase in stopsearches and fewer house burglaries.
Our County and District Councillors said that they had
recently attended a meeting about the BIOSO. They reportedthat at last it seemed that the different departments were
working together. It was music to the ears of the Parish
Councillors who have been pushing for this kind of holistic
approach for years. There is no plan in place as yet for a bypassbut that is the long-term objective and one that they will keeppressing for. A parishioner asked about the reduced bus
services and Andy Campbell of Stagecoach, who was in the
audience, replied that he had to work within commercial
constraints but that he was doing everything possible to
maintain services and that an hourly service into Cambridgewould still function, though via two routes. Ideally it would be
good to be able to do more but to keep any bus service Viable, people needed to use it and at the moment usage was low for
large parts of the day.Mike Tidball talked about Willingham Action Group
(WAG) and the progress made since it was established
following the Parish Plan; he urged anyone wishing to find out
more to visit the website. Special thanks were due to Graham
Mumby for all his work and in particular the formation of the
well—attended environment group. Thanks were also due to
the District Council for the Community Chest grant for
furniture on the Jubilee field. A community orchard was
planned on the old recreation ground on Earith Road and
funding was being sought.Richard Foster, lead Parish Councillor for the Halls,
reported that both the Public and Ploughman halls were in
regular use, every weekday evening and some weekends.
Though in the short-term the Public Hall remained in
reasonable condition, more thought would need to be given to
'halls strategy' in the longer term. The Ploughman Hall is
being repainted externally this year, a youth conversion is due
to take place within the existing framework of the buildingand a new car-park surface laid and extended with enhanced
planting around it.
Peter Hinds described the recently formed Over,Willingham, Longstanton and Swavesey Community Car
Scheme (OWLS), and thanked the Parish Council for their
initial contribution to costs. The Scheme has started well.
There are three volunteer drivers from Willingham and quite
a few users. More drivers are needed so if you have a car and
a few hours to spare, please tell us. Volunteer drivers receive
payment towards basic running costs as well as the hugegratitude of the people they are able to help.
Trevor Rowe, chairman of the Willingham Youth Trust
(WYT), described the facilities currently on offer and the need
for a permanent youth facility. Though there was generalagreement that more youth facilities were needed in
Willingham, actual commitment was very disappointing: 116
people had been invited to a recent meeting of the Youth
Trust and only 6 turned up. A website for WYT is under
construction and he urged parishioners to get involved in
helping in any way they could. The Trust is particularlyanxious to recruit more trustees and find more sources of
local funding. Finally the Cambridge and Peterborough Association of
Local Councils presented Willingham Parish Council with a
certificate of re-accreditation of Quality Council status. It is
an award not easily achieved and great credit is due to the
work of the Parish Clerk in securing this, which required an
external audit on the level and quality of the services to check
that they meet best practice. Perhaps the scheme should be
extended to national government!

JO'I'TINGS FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR
Those of you who are regular bus users will know that the
Citi 5 service has been amended, with a new service from
June that no longer continues to St Ives. Another
consequence is that Fen Drayton no longer has a bus service
of any description and since the spring I have been workingwith my fellow County Councillor for Swavesey and Fen
Drayton and the local Parish Clerks to see what optionsmight be available to fill the gap. Before we can make any
decisions, we need to see what the need for the area is and
what services people want. Therefore, there is a
questionnaire for completion below. It asks what services
you currently use and what you would like to see. Please
take a few minutes to complete it, so that we can gain a goodunderstanding of the local need. If you would like an
electronic copy, please e—mail me and I will send it to you. Please return all copies to me at the address below.
I believe that we are starting to make slow progress with
the B1050. My concern has always been that the CountyCouncil has treated the issues of the bank, the number of
HGVs and the impact of Northstowe as three separate
issues, whereas treating them as a whole might lead to a
more cost—effective solution. Cllr Manning and I had a
meeting with senior officers in May, where we persuaded
them to look at it as one problem. Money needs to be spenton the bank; not just the monthly repairs which run to
around £30,000 per year, but a permanent fix, which runs
into millions of pounds. There will also be some moneyfrom the S 106 agreement for Northstowe, but the two sums
together would not be sufficient to fund a bypass. So officers
have agreed to go away and investigate how the gap mightbe filled — and who might pay for it. This may not seem like
a lot of progress, but it certainly feels as though there is
now a willingness to try to deal with the problem. Finally, I am delighted to say that the Over Day Centre
has been chosen as one of the nominated charities forjulyby Weitrore in Trumpington. I hope as many people as
possible will take the opportunity to do some shoppingthere duringjuly and put their to/eem in the Day Centre bank.
I can be reached at the address or telephone number
below.
