    Gardens

Natural FlowThis elegant gardens soft curves and flowing lines complement the homes architectural style and exclusive beachside location.

It was important for the owners of this Palm Jumeirah property that the shape of their garden complemented the architecture of their villa, a curvaceous sea-facing structure with a distinctly Malibu feel.

The landscaping of this garden was definitely inspired by the individualistic architectural layout of the house. says Nehme Moujaess, managing director of Terraverde and the principle designer of this project. The landscape incorporates curves and soft, flowing lines that fit in seamlessly with its exclusive position along the beach. The 400-square-metre garden was landscaped from scratch, with the only original element being the swimming pool. Even though the pool was original, we renovated it entirely, adding a seating space, swim-up bar and an infinity edge that flows into the bar area. Nehme says. The infinity edges positioning was intentional. When you sit at the bar, you can hear the soft, gentle flow of water, which is an apt 18 sound when you consider the view.

The property owners, who have lived here since May 2010, were very clear about the aesthetic feel and functionality of their garden, saying, The landscape had to have certain features, including a swimming pool and swim-up bar, so we started off with those and designed the rest of the garden around them. But Nehme admits that it was challenging getting the design exactly right. We started by taking the pool back to its concrete shell. We then remodelled and extended it to accomodate the seating area, swim-up bar, stools and infinity edge. The pool was waterproofed and then mosaic tiles, which the owners chose themselves, were added to it, along with soft lighting that gives the garden a magical feel in the evening.

    Our Presence

    TerraVerde continues its winning ways.

TerraVerde has once again been lauded, when it was announced as the winner of the LandscapeResidential category, at the Middle East and North Africa Interior Design Awards 2014 in Dubai.

Following only a few weeks after its resounding success at the inaugural Dubai International Garden Competition, the TerraVerde team were lost for words. Commenting on their success, Managing Director, Nehme Moujaess said I always believe in going the extra mile to deliver quality at every stage of our process. Sometimes we have to take difficult decisions but never at the cost of our ability to maintain quality standards that exceed our clients expectations. This award is a result of our never compromising in our endeavour to deliver an exceptional standard of service, craftsmanship and high quality workmanship.

Business Development Director Katie Hilal commented; We are honoured to have received this tremendous accolade from such a prestigious body. It reinforces our decision to expand our services into the interior design world and provides us with a measure of our progress. We believe we have much more to do in terms of establishing our Interior Design credentials but this is a big step forward.

Houssam Khoury, Sales and Marketing Director, said; Without doubt, TerraVerde has a new momentum and with the addition of an exceptional Interior Design capability to our award winning Landscaping service offer, we will achieve our aim of becoming a totally unique provider of Inspired Living options.

Commenting on the winning project, Nehme Moujaess explained; Our client has an Interior Design background, she and her husband, commissioned TerraVerde to design and landscape their personal garden and outdoor spaces. As you would expect from a professional designer, their brief was precise and challenging in terms of style and required functionality. Our primary objective was to establish a modern low maintenance outdoor space for entertainment that not only complemented the exterior architecture of their home also a subtle extension of their modern interior design.

The project took two weeks to design and two months to implement. The result of our labour was significantly beyond our clients expectations and in her own words is more than outstanding.

Working in close collaboration, the design was inspired by our clients use of black, white and grey throughout their interior design. The hardscaping is centred on black basalt tiles, which are used to pave all the non-planted areas at both the front and rear of the property to stunning effect. Polished Absolute black granite bar and barbeque counter tops in conjunction with light grey Glitterite finishes to all the planters provides a visually dramatic contrast to the dark elegant paving.

We incorporated an existing pool into the design by facing it with a spacious wooden deck, which also butts up to a small grass lawn to demarcate the relaxation and entertainment areas of the garden. The attention to detail on this build was critical and we left nothing left to chance. From the selection of the colour and textures of the soft furnishing and awnings, through to the creation of a unique wood burning fire pit in the entertainment area which, we designed with a bespoke cover to double as a casual table for daytime use.

At TerraVerde we prefer to set rather than follow trends. What really sets this scheme apart is our innovative and unique use of fibre optic lights. These are usually used in interior design and water features. However, we decided to embed them in both the face of the barbecue counter and the bench seating within the dining area. Working in close collaboration with a well-known international specialist fibre optic manufacturer, we spent a significant amount of time, at no cost to our client, developing, prototyping and pioneering the first-time out-door use of this technology in this garden. The effect is dramatic and magical, providing a light experience like no other.

Further, he explained that the planting was carefully considered to meet the clients need for a low maintenance and a perennial all year round garden. Palm related species Washingtonias, Cycas Revoluta and Phoenix Robellini were selected for their durability and architectural structure to form visual boundaries and contrast with the dramatic hardscaping and contemporary architecture of the villa. We planted trees with small root balls to avoid potential damage to the building foundations and reduce the use of water, which also influenced the size of the lawn. We also formulated a special soil mix incorporating Zeoplant a water retention additive specifically for the selected plants to conserve as much water as possible. As a result, this garden uses 50% less water than a conventional equivalent.

The structural planting is augmented with design planters that allow the client to add seasonal colour to strategic parts of the garden.

TerraVerde Scoops Top Honours at Inaugural Dubai International Garden Competition

Some of the Judges comments, including this is really a work of art stunning and this would be gold at Chelsea provided an indication of the calibre of TerraVerdes entry to this new competition on the Dubai annual calendar. TerraVerde has been awarded Best Large Size Garden and Best of Show for a bold and innovative design by Nehme Moujaess, the companys Managing Director.

Commenting on TerraVerdes success, Moujaess said: I am absolutely delighted by the accomplishment of the team and our company as a whole. I am extremely proud of the commitment and effort everyone has contributed to our winning garden. This success means a lot to us and we are all going to celebrate.

Business Development Director Katie Hilal commented: Winning these awards is important to us. Being recognised and respected by judges of the highest international standing acts as a barometer of how good we are. Not only has TerraVerde won today, so has Dubai. Our ability to compete successfully at the highest level reflects positively on our profession and our clients by adding value to the gardens we have created for them.

Explaining the inspiration for the garden Moujaess said: As it is the very first Dubai International Garden Competition, we wanted to create something really special and feature a piece of Dubais history in our entry. Having explored Dubais heritage, we chose to create our design around Pearls, which are strategically placed throughout the space. We did not want to be traditional in our approach and decided to also inject some of the glamour of modern day Dubai into our design.

Commenting on the planting, he explained: We emphasised the use of Palmaceae plants as they are indicative to the style of our garden and perfect for the overall look we were trying to achieve, which was to reflect Emirati heritage in a modern context. The flowering scrubs provide an injection of colour in an otherwise lush green landscape. We paid special attention to the use of plants and with differing shades of green and avoided using annual flowering plants to create a self-sustainable garden that requires low maintenance.

When discussing the hard-scape he said: Our garden was designed to be a space with no boundaries to conjure a feeling of freedom and peace with an endless openness together with minimalist touches that create an air of serene sophistication. It employs an array of different materials in the hard landscaping for example, grey stone slabs interspersed with white marble chips in the walkways, the planters are built with red Meranti wood painted in a taupe colour incorporating stainless steel strips. The grey decking area is modern but has warmth, which is accentuated by a fire feature within the seating area. The decking material is Duralife composite wood made from recycled material and is environmentally friendly and needs no maintenance.

It also incorporates modern interpretations of Arabian culture for example, panels and columns of Mashrabiya made from stainless steel, seating areas include a large pearl day bed and a modern bench incorporating a fire feature, two water features; one a reflective pool of grey stainless steel mosaics with a pearl at the centre; and the other with four water jets streaming onto a bed of marble pearls. In addition, cut slabs of Tint Mint sandstone were placed amongst the plantation to symbolize the ongoing development of Dubai and to suggest there is more to come.

Concluding, Moujaess commented: This win has set a benchmark for next years event, which we look forward to being a part of.

Illumination in the remainder of the garden is very specific to each area. The facade of the house features stainless-steel lights that give off a warm, white light, while the inside of the pool features LED, multi-coloured lights. We also placed small blue strip lights around the pool bars counter tops and blue spike bulbs to illuminate the royal palms. Small spotlights built into steps at the bottom of the garden lead the way to the beach.Additional design elements scattered throughout the garden and to the stunning look of the landscape while maximising functionality at the same time. We added three fire pots on pedestals around the dining area. Nehme says, This not only frames the casual seating area, but draws outside the eye out to the sea view beyond. 109

Another clever designs trio is the poolside cluster of custom-made pebble pot water fea tures. Teak decking and brushed travertine, which is less slippery that normal travertine, sur round the pool. Planters are made of stacked quartz, and table tops and the bar and barbecue counter are crafted from lustrous granite.

Describing the gardens greenery, Nehme says the owners were looking for a tropical but distinctly Middle Eastern feel. He achieved this look by layering luscious plants and trees, including sturdy royal palms, veitchia merrillii and robellini, sprays of zamia, coconut palms, cycas and clumps of plumeria and bamboo alongside each other throughout the garden.

While the villas floor-to-ceiling windows allow for views of the landscape from every room, the property owners admit that they prefer being out in the garden rather than in the house during the cooler months, enjoying the calming seaside views and taking in the abundant greenery.

My brief was to design and build a contemporary landscape that was not only practical enough for the clients children to enjoy, but also refined enough for sophisticated parties and gatherings, says managing director and lead designer at TerraVerde, Nehme Moujaess. With the help of the owners- who were directly involved and helped select the materials and foliage we used throughout in the project. -1 managed to bring their vision to life. The vibrant 875 square metre outdoor space on Palm Jumeirah boasts a magnificent view of the beach and the whole landscaping project took three to four months to complete. Remodelled from an existing unkempt garden, while redesigning, it was important to ensure that the villa and outdoor landscape complemented each other without retracting from the serene view of the sea, which the owners described in the brief as an amazing water feature they did not want to disturb, Nehme explains.

By dividing the colorful garden into sections, including a seated area for entertaining, a grassy area for the clients young children to play on and decking around the pool for sunbathing, we managed to ensure the space was not only beautiful, but functional too.

To add character to the front garden, Nehme placed custom-designed planters and a pedestal and fire pot at the entrance. The client wanted dense foliage and colourful plants that could survive right next to the beach in the harsh summer climate, so we installed Washingtonias, Cycas and Phoenix robellinii in this area. Moving towards the back, visitors are greeted by an extended raised terrace, outdoor barbecue and bar. We added a pergola to the terrace and cladded the existing columns in wood so the clients had a shaded entertaining area. We also sunk the bar and barbecue area to maximise the views of the beach, Nehme says.

One of the dominating visual focal points is the large swimming pool, which came with the original villa, but even this did not escape a dramatic overhaul. We had to refurbish the entire thing, Nehme says, We replaced all the mosaic tiles, removed the plastic overflow grill and installed travertine. We also added a swim-up bar made of a slab of travertine and stools from which to enjoy the view.

TerraVerdes clients an? ecstatic with the. end result. So much so, they reques ted we design a gym while landscaping so they now enjoy the view while working out.

Speaking about the materials used to refurbish the landscape, Nehme says travertine was a major component. We used polished noce travertine on the terrace, bar and barbecue as well as on the top step of the entrance. Honed beige travertine was used in the walkways, accented with granite cobbles, he says. The planters at the front are clad with travertine mosaic and the coping is beige travertine as well. The barbecue features glass and travertine mosaic and a marble top. Correct deck, a composite wood decking was used around the pool and pebbles were placed throughout the space to highlight the plants, he adds.

Nehme says his clients are ecstatic with the end result. So much so, they requested we design a gym while landscaping so they now enjoy the view while working out.
